I've been doing mobile details (mostly wash wax and interior) for a few years now with a friend and I've found that when it comes to equipment you can keep it simple. if you have a garage with good power supply you can run bigger air compressors, power washers, and vacuums
when you go mobile unless you have a way to generate your own power you have to run smaller equipment, at least air compressors and power washers or use gas powered (which I hate because they are noisy) I have finally found a decent power washer with auto start/stop for less than $200 that actually has decent output and plugs into any 120v outlet without tripping breakers, you never know what poeple have plugged into the circuit you need to use and how old or weak the breaker is, running an big enough air compressor (for a tornador) on an extension cord never works well, and the mighty vac steam unit can be a bugger when the heater, vac,and pump are all on.
so you can downsize and just use water from a house, and a vacuum, and keep it simple
    which I have also done
the other option is to have a generator. I spent a considerable amount of time shopping for one, most are loud, I wanted a honda inverter generator, fairly quiet and fuel efficient, but $$$$$, what I found instead was an old unit honda made called the EX5500, it is super quiet, and liquid cooled with a radiator and electric start, perfect for being runn in a hot van in the summer, ( they are rare but less than $1000) I vent the exhaust out the door, and and wired outlets in my setup for all my equipment to be plugged into at all times, all the hoses, pressure and supply and air, and cords are all on retractable reels accessible from the back, the generator can easily run a 220v air compressor big enough to supply tools like tornadors, smaller 120v air compressor could not keep up, and ones large enough had to be taken in and out of the van to be plugged in direct and were so loud
find the quietest vacuum and compressors you can, old loud shop vacs we dont use anymore, no more gas power washers( to finicky with carbs and gas), its so much nicer and less obnoxious to your customer and their neighbors, we detail on weekends and nobody wants to hear a screaming jet powered shop vac or a loud clanky power washer on sunday morning
I keep a table in the van and a few organized baskets and bins that go on the table that hold all the tools, chemicals and rags. And we always carry a rolling chest with a gallon of each chemical, empty spray bottles, and a funnel. wash buckets, triple the rags we normally use on one car, and enough heavy duty non kink water hose to get to the far away spigots, a few extension cords all on reels and jumper cables and a jump pack.
But like I said you can make do with much less complication and now I have people bringing cars to me and do them in my driveway at my leisure. the van still has all the tools in case I get a mobile appointment, but its not my main gig, I run a small farm most days and work from home mostly, so I can wash cars almost anytime in between other projects and my partner in the business details at a dealership all week, so its nothing super serious but it could be very easily if my other business dried up

I literally made some business cards a few wks ago & I wasn't even intending on doing this full time, but I did a magazine shoot prep on a Grabber Blue right hand drive civic for my brother & a 64 Impala low-low for a friend & just those posts on Instagram & Fb have spread like wildfire & booked me 7 days a week due to the quality I've always been known for with engine builds. It's achievable of your goal is to impress each customer a lil more than the last & stand out from other detailers. After buffing dozens of decaying boats, dirty old cars, and driving up to 250km a day, I am finally starting to get in a groove where I've made a name for myself and those nicer jobs are coming in like Cadillac escalade's or bmw M5's or just yesterday I finished a 68' Covette Stingray buff and ceramic coating with interior. It doesn't get any better than that.

I work for a dealership here in Colorado Springs I have been there for 10 years. I will say in the beginning it was the treadmill run but as you grow a bond with the dealership things start shifting in your favor with pricing, I also advertise all over the dealership to get customer work but keep in mind most times you have to give a 10% kick back on retail work they sell. Service writers need to make money to wink wink! Starting in a detail business in a dealership I myself recommend. Work stability and you really get to find out who your bad ass workers really are! I also do paint work and bodywork And PDR work. My customer base has finally grown to a 50-50 within the dealership. I also had a shop in New England that did not work out as well do the pricing being so low. So it is a gamble

@@gregnatonson6970 I would absolutely love to. I'm actually originally from the Chicago area. I grew up in Glenview and my family still lives in the area. I'll definitely make the trip down once the quarantine is over. This stuff is crazy. It's like living in a movie. I hope the detailing industry doesn't get hit to hard. It's a heck of a time to be trying to launch! My very best to you guys and I really appreciate the invite!

Car dealerships don’t pay their Detailers much. I worked for a couple over 7 years. I learned a lot and learned paint correction myself over time. It’s and honest valuable skill that not everyone wants to do. But if you’re great at it and have a great work ethic. Shoot for the stars!!

i have two friends that quit their jobs to start detailing businesses because they liked detailing their cars. they didn't build some clientele and regular income first. neither made it. you have to put in that 40 at your regular job PLUS that 20-30 building your business. once you are getting regular work they look at making the jump

Great information in this video. Have you ever thought of doing a follow up on this guy? I live in Minnesota and currently detail out of my garage and have been for 10 years. Haven't really done much marketing other than word of mouth and only 3-4 cars a month which are mostly interior jobs (dislike interiors) but it is my bread and butter and seeing the customers reaction after the job is done is what keeps me doing it. Keep up the great work.

Awesome video for someone starting out! Very inspirational and alot of great advice and insight on how to get started. I really like how y’all touched on not needing a lot of money to get started. That’s one of the best things about trying to start a detail business vs some other business is the relatively low start up cost. I’m a beginner myself and just recently decided to dive in and buy equipment. I already had a shopvac and air compressor so not counting that, I have around $1500 invested so far. I have enough equipment and chemicals to do anything from a simple wash and interior detail, to a paint correction and full disaster detail. I really enjoy the videos guys, thanks for helping me learn along the way!

I’m a little surprised that getting junkyard panels and doors, wasn’t mentioned when he talked about doing the whole neighborhoods cars. That’s something you can get for cheap, and you can burn through the paint, all day long. Get some soft paint panels, and hard paint panels. And get it going.
