      One very important topic I don't see discussed too much and that's the need for insurance.
      When you're detailing someone's vehicle it is in your care, custody and control. In other words.....you're responsible for any potential damage that may happen to that vehicle. In addition to the $500-$1000 for startup equipment you need to add around another $900 or more for insurance.
      You need a general liability policy with garage keepers and garage liability as endorsements. If you don't have this and something happens to the vehicle then you will be liable to pay.
      Something you don't want.
      Just my two cents from working in the industry.

    I’ve been a mobile detailer now for 6 months. The biggest thing I’ve realized is to never undersell your work. You’ll work long days in all types of climates just to leave another person happy. I love what I do, but never sell yourself short or give people a “cheap” price. If your work is good people will pay.

    Hey Pan. Great video! I retired from my job as a police officer after 29 years on the job about a year and a half ago. I started up a small handyman business in January of ‘21 with detailing as a “side gig” to fill time when I wasn’t building or fixing something. One good review on a local FB page and my detail business exploded. I could detail a car a day, each day of the week if I chose to… but I have to take care of those honey-do projects too so I try to limit myself to three to five a week. (One a day, unless they are a total mess or the customer wants paint correction, etc). At the end of each day, I’m exhausted. When you talk “sweat equity”, you are totally on point. You, and two or three other TH-cam detailers have taught me so much. Thanks for all you do.

      Retired from Chicago Police in 2012. Went into the auto detailing business. It’s always been a hobby with me ever since I was licensed to drive in the 1970s. People always ask, “You’re retired. Why are working?” I’m not really working. Auto detailing is a hobby. If you do it right, it can be quite profitable. I’m fortunate-I found a terrific chiropractor who taught me exercise to strengthen my core. I’m 65 yoa and don’t have morning body aches and ALWAYS faster than my dog when he wants to go out in the morning!

    Love love love this video Pan. It really spoke to me on a personal level. I’ve been considering starting my own detailing business for a while now, just scared to fully commit. I have a good paying job with fair benefits, but I’m just growing tired of the same thing every day, tired of 7 day a week mandatory work, and tired of being at the mercy of somebody else. I’m just concerned about how much I’d be capable of doing by myself, I’m a perfectionist and it would be very difficult for me to trust my reputation to a hired employee. Also I know detailing can be less than steady at times, especially dependent on weather. I’m self taught and capable of pretty much everything. I already have 80% of everything I need to open a full service shop. I started a lot like you, hung out at local meets and everybody praised how nice my vehicles looked. So I started offering my services to friends, and I still do it exclusively for friends now just in my spare time. I think I’m ready for the next step towards opening my own business. Thanks so much for your words of wisdom and encouragement!

    For those w/o a pressure washer I recommend the Eley 2 Piece Cleaning Nozzle set and a FoamMaster Foam Gun. They do a decent job. Attach the foam gun directly to the Eley so you don't have to squeeze a handle while foaming.

Started off with a small baby steam cleaner for interior details, just upgraded to a proper steam cleaner (3 x 1L fills for a complete SUV in a Matter of hours) and i absolutely love seeing my customers reaction when they see the results 😁

    I just got back into detailing after a 30 year hiatus. I regret giving it up. Had my first clean today. My brothers kid grub filled mini van, it was a good welcome back. Just doing interior jobs for now, but, at 48, I have lots of rust to work out and a lot to relearn and even more to catch up on. Your videos have been very helpful and will be for a long time and are the ones that got me going again. Thanks for the advice and inspiration,

    When I started my business it was pretty bare minimum. I bought the essentials, but like just from Walmart. I bought a shop vac. My friend had a pressure washer that I used and he had some other stuff. But as we started getting more business and clients, we upgraded. First we bought a carpet extractor, then a steam cleaner, just so we could expand and do little bit better jobs. Then it was pretty much trying out new stuff, iron remover, polisher, ceramic coating. We still use mostly meguiars products, but they are somewhat professional. I’d say we started out with maybe $200 of stuff. Now we make between $1k-$2k a week. Thanks for all the tips pan!

    Awesome tips Pan! I was considering starting a detailing business in my garage similar to yours. My question is: do your customers have to find a ride after dropping off their vehicles? I never understood how that part of it was handled. Otherwise, they would have to wait for hours at my house while their vehicle is being detailed.

    • @PanTheOrganizer
      @PanTheOrganizer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Andrew. Yes my customers always have to have a ride back home (they often use Uber or a friend or family member) as I pretty much only do high end details at the moment, which includes ceramic coatings, and I let the vehicle cure in my garage for 24 hours.
      But this is after 24 years of detailing. At the beginning, I was also mobile, so I used to go to customers' homes. It really depends on which strategy you prefer. It might not be as easy to detail from home in the beginning, as people don't know you yet. You have to build your reputation.

    • @AMP8424
      @AMP8424 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yea no one is gonna wait at your house bro that's weird. Either pick it up or they drop it off.

    • @iosgaminggeek5395
      @iosgaminggeek5395 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I started mobile at first to get money to buy equipment. Then I transitioned to doing it at home. I still do some mobile here and there. Like boats and some customers that been there since day one. But just like Pan said, the way I do it, is they drop it off 9 am, and pick it up the next day 9 am. But I get 2-3 cars a day schedule it for 9 am. The reason is, you don’t want to be rushed. You want to do a good job. And next morning gives you time to check over your work. Also, depends on a job. Some jobs that are huge, I reserve a whole day just for one car.

    Thank you Pan for this encourageing video.
    I have OCD. I find most people that succeed in this business need this condition.
    We are fanatics about every detail. If it don't look clean to us, it is not clean and polished.
    I am the same with my vehicles. I love a clean good looking car/truck.
    I'm retired. I still work, just not as mush as I once did.
    It was a natural fit for me to dive in to detailing. I do it part time. But I have my limit and can't handle anymore clients.
    I actually refer them to other detailers in my town.
    I never have advertised. All my business comes for customers.
    I do carry a running list in case I get a spot.
    I have been professional doing detailing for 5 years. But I have been detailing for over 40 years.
    I picked up tips over the years. One thing about detailing is we are free with our tips and help. There is plenty of business for anyone with the tool a space and desire. It a love business. You have to love what your doing.
    Price cutting local competition is a big negative all the way around. Keep prices close for your area. Never, never give more than what your charging for. Mail coupons during holidays is your wanting to thank your customers for their business. The better job you do, the more customers will want to pay you for your effort. Your not making money by doing extra or free.
    Coupons are advertising. It's tax deductible. Anything reasonable and necessary to you to be in business.

    Hey pan. So this is how things are with me. I started working at a car wash and have been for about 3 years and when I wasn't going anywhere with it cuz I was told to train a new manager, I left. But the urge to clean dirty cars stuck with me and then I found you. So detailed with everything u do and even leaving links to help all of us out. I learned about washing cars from a company but I learned DETAILING from you, and I still do. Everything you post that is something I can work on more or have no knowledge of, I try to learn about very closely from you. You helped me start a detailing business.
    Now it's been about 2 and half years since I started and I'm kinda still in the beginning stage when it comes to getting new customers. But my most difficult thing is to find out how to price my packages! Cuz I see other detailers who say they don't get outta bed for less than $200 while I was like $110 for polishing and waxing starting off. And just recently went to a detailing shop and was told I'm dirt cheap even when I raised my price to $300 when they charge a minimum of $500 for what I did. And even ceramic coating! My fear is that with me constantly changing/raising my price that I'll scare away customers for my "high" prices when it's obviously worth it. But im happy im here in this position because you and I look forward to updates in the coming years.

    • @madej5
      @madej5 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Do what works for you. They’re only telling you that because they’ll have to lower their prices when your taking their buisness. Be in competition with them by doing everything they do but a little cheaper and most of all make sure you do a good job because that’s what’s gonna keep you from not sounding “I knew it was too good to be true deal”.

    • @JoshuaWaterDragonDeale
      @JoshuaWaterDragonDeale 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@madej5 yea i try to keep that mind that they want me to be as expensive or detail worse but im not professional looking yet and want to make sure i have enough returning clients to have a steady income. So im still testing the waters with some prices, right now currently doing package prices but im thinking of doing price RANGE instead of hourly or package price.

Look at jay-z ugliest dude there is but yet today he is a billionaire you think he let his mind stop him from achieving greatness ?? Dont worry about what u look like. Its all about your mindset and you will find customers. Do set rates for a current cars. Sedans are 40$ , suvs are 60$ and trucks are 80$ etc HOWEVER you do it and charge just DO IT bro.

    42:08 I started my mobile detail business a year ago and went into it the right and wrong way 😂. At 1st I bought all the right start off chemicals and tools but took 6 hrs to detail cause I didn’t have guidance. I then tried to work in a shop or 2 but treated it like a side gig with no punctuality & when I got another chance I worked for another shop till I almost got in debt. I took a step back and had to understand that you can’t charge cheap prices for yourself and when working with others expect half. U do have to price yourself the same as your area. I’m now in search of a truck but I have everything I need to carry my business public soon including paint correction. I want to thank you 🙏🏽 pan for the chemicals and those 2 other shops (like magic auto detail & Tj auto spa ) that gave me the opportunity to know this is what I want from life and what I enjoy 🎉. Very inspiring
