Going deep like this into the whys and hows about BTS reminds me of when i spent a whole week dissecting their works. I couldn't point out at first what was this feeling i was having that they're different, all i knew was that BTS and their team are very very smart and genuine. But how are they smart? Why's their genuineness more striking than other pop acts? I was so excited to understand more!!
Love the video, awesome take on the album, even made me like Inner Child more kdfjk

Oh wow.. This is such a detailed and thought out review. I'm kinda tired of generic reviews from the press that are either written with a 'being the most offensive and rude as possible proves my credibility' mindset or that are simply descriptive and sometimes look like a copy-paste of a press-release provided by the label... So it's really refreshing to see deep analysis like this. Thank you.
With regard to BTS in general and this album in particular, I agree that being 'emotive and sincere' is one of their most significant characteristics as artists. Before discovering BTS I almost gave up on 'commercial' music because it was boring to me. For some reason, most of it felt like dull monotonous noise with rare splashes of color... But BTS's songs make me feel and they make me think...

I had my first coming out in 1978 (gay) and my second one in 2016 (BTS) after watching the MV of "Blood, sweat and tears". The second one made me feel humiliated when I realised people around me could only relate me liking BTS to me being gay and drooling over those pretty boys in a boy band. That I might like the artistry in their MV's, lyrics, music or storytelling was out of the question. It surprised me.
    Good review! I agree!

it also sucks that they don't even try to understand to why i like kpop, they'll just call me as "a screaming teenage girl who demands jungkook to r*** me"🧟 even my mom would always assume that i would die to go to south korea and blamed the "disgraceful" mindset of the koreans because i made a mistake. help, people don't even know that before being a fangirl, i'm also a human being who has its own identity and mistakes. i'm not some sort of living creature who follows what they say like a "brainwashed" person...i just like music―nothing demonic there☺️

THIS REVIEW IS SO GOOD AND IN-DEPTH and it truly explains why bts is often looked over when it comes to pop music. Even when they have proven time and time again that they are equal if not above their contemporaries. It’s so refreshing to hear a reviewer that is actually interested in the music and knowing what it means rather than one that just hates on it just bc it’s for “teen girls”

What BTS offer, in terms of their emotional payoff, is _sincerity_ .(as Jimin said)
More than "authenticity", or "artistry"... It's home, with all of the stories we tell a billion times, the inside jokes, the support and celebration of triumphs. The complex layers of life.

  • @violetta698

I never get why people think the "tortured artist" story is the only way to go to be honest and personal in your music. And BTS do deal with themes like that, like the cost of fame (The Last, Tony Montana, Interlude: Shadow), or fear of losing passion in a capitalistic industry (Black Swan), or even the pain of creating art itself (Dionysus). They also explore even more personal themes like their own deteriorating mental health (The Last, Reflection, Always, Awake, Lie). But that's not the only thing they talk about, coz the "tortured artist" isn't all there is to the artist. Duh. Why is it any less personal to chronicle your ten-year long friendship with your bandmate and high school best friend? Coz it's positive? Why is it any less impactful to talk about self love and how it's harder than loving others, or about how it's okay to not know what you want and not run the marathon everyone else is running? Why is it any less of a statement to sing a song with the sole purpose of showing off your regional dialects and culture with a conclusion that speaks of unity in diversity than to sing a song criticizing the government, or any authority? I feel like people find it hard to understand moderation, they seek to see things in extremes, hence neutral or subtle themes often miss their eye as it's not radical enough, or too sugarcoated. But I find that the subtlety is part of it's beauty.

Really great video ! But i think that most of the songs in MOTS7 aren't really that standard, even if they are quite catchy
ON for example really blew my mind because it's a really unique song with orchestral and hip hop influences and it felt really new. Same for Shadow, Ego, Black Swan and many others, i felt like "wow i've never heard something like that before"
I don't know if it's in the structure of all the songs, in the details, in their lyrics or in a mix of everything but it felt really fresh and new to me
Idk if we can limit MOTS7 to a pop album because it's a really diverse and intricate album that mixes various genres in such a unique way

hessa rudevik Even for black swan I can argue that the use of traditional eastern string instrumentation along with classic popularized trap beats isn’t too common, so I found that track very unique. I also enjoyed the way the chorus was autotuned singing yet *extremely* layered and harmonized.. also something you do not hear in cloud rap/emo hip hop. I don’t hear western artists or rappers vocalize like that very often. The “trance” like quality of that song to convey the subject matter was reflected in the simple, repetitive and minimal instrumentation. I like to nitpick and analyze the sonics of BTS’s music so sorry for the essay rant !

i stopped listening to pop long before bts but they made me reconsider. i've been thinking about what makes bts different, some of their songs may sound familiar but as many or more sound new or special, i think it has to be because of their voices and the way they sing, somehow i can't find anyone who sounds like them either in western music or kpop. this and the lyrics are their magic wand, the way they care about delivering a story and conversing with you

I disagree with the beginning. BTS was never a Kpop act, they were trying to fit into Kpop and let's not forget that they failed. Breaking out of the Kpop schema is what put them on the radar, not them conforming. A mutation of a cell is not the cell, it's a separate and new cell type with an own nucleus.
Edit: and on another note, most translators don't hit up the dictionary to fully examine BTS' lyrics. As a language nerd, I do, and let me put it this way: their lyrics go far deeper if you consider word choice, and sentence order. ON blew my mind with the first verse, tbh. So in terms of lyrics, what most people will read is just half of the meaning. Gets the point across, but doesn't explain why certain words were used to express certain ideas.

Not really...they weren't a K-pop act to begin with...but they did end up changing directions and ended up debuting as a K-pop group...what they do is POP music
And BTS knows that....you'd know too if you followed them since the beginning and read their interviews especially the one that RM and Suga did...where they said that what they do now is not hip hop, it cannot be called hip hop. It's is pop

The title “Map of the Soul: 7” implies that the destination is 7. 7 as in 7 members and 7 years. 7 is essentially a pop manifesto. It reflects their journey and where they’ve ended up after all these years and does so flawlessly while still being experimental enough to be considered a complex work. While there isn’t a clear linear narrative like there is in albums such as LY:Answer it still gives each member access to the spotlight and a platform to express their own unique take on their journey. The tone of the album is definitely more hopeful and optimistic while also touching on the darker aspects of fame. Overall a really good album that I find myself listening to a LOT. It’s definitely competing with LY: Answer to be my favorite BTS album.

I love this video to the core. It truly breaks down the artistry and thought process of BTS that only sadly, the fans know. People dismiss them calling them generic or overrated, but at the end of the day, they are amazing artists creating beautiful pieces of art, simply by embracing the popular, without forcing themselves to be 'edgy' or 'artsy'. They used to be that way, creating rough music, but that was because their thought process was like that at the time. Throughout their new albums they show how they've evolved not only as artists, but as human beings in general. They prove again and again why they are special, and why they truly deserve their success.

I thought of Warhol when I first saw the cover art, which I’m about 100% sure is just a bunch of different fonts rasterized and layered in Illustrator or Photoshop hit with an “apply image” command and a couple of blending modes. Side note: Be prepared to see this effect on everything this year. After the press conference every graphic designer who saw the opening figured it out. Anyway, this is what we all need to pull the scales off the eyes of our snobby music friends. Thank you!

14:25 "A lyric that changes the foundation of your perspection of the song itself"
I can't stress this enough . With BTS songs , it's very easy to completely miss just how much deep a song can be if you miss a simple lyric .
I will give a example . I absolutely love the song Butterfly of BTS . Always heard it again and again , and each time it got me emotional . The depth of the lyrics in the song was so touching to me . But I never paid much attention to a single line RM says in his rap *"My Kafka on the shore"* . One day I took it upon me to search about this only to find it being *a double reference* to the mind-blowing *Japanese novel "Kafka on the shore"* (if you read the novel , you can also see it's connection with BTS story line and other songs as well . But that's very very deep and I can't explain it all here . Keep in mind the novel in itself is like a puzzle and is very metamorphic . It's all very confusing lol) as well as the infamous writer *Franz Kafka* (who's work is characterized by anxiety and alienation, and his characters often face absurd situations . Known for books like "The Metamorphosis," "A Hunger Artist," "In the Penal Colony"etc) . The more I researched and the more I got to know about these references , the more my respect for BTS and their music increased. I was shocked as to how much a person can put such deep things in a mere 2 to 3 minute song . A b-side at that . I literally got goosebumps . I highly recommend every army to see the full analysis of the song . It's so worth the time . It isn't just a beautiful sad song ...it so much more than that .
*I have said this . And I will say this again . BTS is so much more than "just a popular kpop boy band" . And if* *you know the meaning behind each and every song , every lyric , every scene of their songs ...you can say* *this without a stutter that no other kpop band can even touch the artistic level of BTS songs .*
Idk why I wrote a whole essay lol . As if anyone will read this lol . But when it comes to music I just want to tell more and more people about the beauty of it and once I start it's impossible to stop myself 😂. Sry

I recently watched a review of the album by someone that isn't a fan of them, and all it showed that BTS music is really about context. Some things that were pointed out as negative could be due to lack of knowing BTS. Sure,we all have different musical preferences but I think we can all agree on how solid their lyrics are,and they are the core of BTS.

You just spoke my heart 💜😭💜. I have always preferred art that is laced with hope and optimism, no matter how dark the subject matter. I find it far more attractive and realistic to see the notion "Yes, life is painful. But we can still live." expressed than "Abandon all hope!" I'm not impressed by pessimism for pessimism's sake. I don't care to indulge in someone that reveals in their negative traits to the point of dismissing their positive ones. What good is a struggle if you never learn how to live a better life for yourself? Light and dark are both meaningful, one isn't more authentic and worthy than the other because one only exists BECAUSE of the other. BTS are humans that have been laying their humanness bare for all to see. They are artists to me. They have made life brighter for me. They are a reminder not to dwell in darkness like it's a personality trait. I love them and will forever.

You know, when I first watched The Shining, I thought the wife's acting was really bad. Then I learned the story and went - of course it is, she's in no state to work if she's being terrorized by her boss. that's why she looks constantly distracted, like she's pulling herself together again and again to do her lines. She looks like she's not IN the scene she's playing. Kubrick's shittiness actually made the movie worse than it would have been if he'd let the poor woman do her job in peace.

Elliot I appreciate you so much. You say what most of us can't, so eloquently, thoughtfully, so I wish I could project this video onto every flat surface this planet has.. It frustrates and annoys me to no end that our society's hellbent on celebrating the negativity instead of looking at all the given options at happiness. It's like.. that sim dlc where some American made college expensive.
Cynical critics like Fantano, Todd etc. can't be bothered to look deeper or do the basic search to look up translations from good sources. It's /their/ brand to keep themselves detached or whatever. But it's not just them, I mean.. Kpop reactor channels like reacttothek just look up color coded lyric videos.. Outside of the fandom who really makes an effort to know what they have to say? Hell even parts of the fandom only listen to the single and that's it.
You, the Ringer podcast, Muish, you guys need more exposure so some people who are already exposed to BTS but look at them through white pop lenses... don't have a choice to ignore the meaning, the context, the stories behind the songs. But... how..

    • @marimiliadsl3113
      @marimiliadsl3113 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Senjuti That point about reacttothek was wrong. Their point of view is not focused on the lyrics, but mainly on the melody and voice of the song ... Then, if the lyrics are significant and will change the perception of the music, so they read what is written, apart from the fact that there is always an introduction to what the song is about and even the process of creating it.
They do not analyze the whole, but the music in isolation.
Comparing reacttothek to this channel is irrational! There are two types of analysis, from points of view.
P.S. Now if you hate the other channel then be honest and say you hate the other channel!

I feel like the growth of their previously dark/angry content took part in what led them to their happier today where they can love themselves better. Though I would also say it wasn't the only or even the biggest factor. A lot of pop music isn't taken seriously because it is considered pop, but I think that kind of thinking is already it's own error. Why does the dark and disturbing get to be the only themes taken seriously when so much good content and ideas come from so many other ways and mediums? BTS has created so many messages throughout the years and have built them on top of each other in layers that their fans can only really understand and THAT has created a beautiful impact on so many of us. Which if we bring into question, "what is art?" I think we'll find that they have made quite the use of it.

Bruuuuh you popped off with this one this is really really good. What of my first thoughts when finishing mots7 was "THIS is what POP should sound like" and you explained it perfectly well, the style and sonics of these songs tgis time around are much more conventionally accessible but have melded perfectly with bts brand of sincerity and depth to become just a really really good album. Im hoping all the best for this comeback

map of the soul 7 is perhaps one of my favourite bts albums. more so when i delved into the meaning. UGH! had a completely newfound place in my heart when i found out the meaning of it - how the rapline created a song delving into the literal importance of anger in the world. I am in awe of their lyricism every day. also let me add my appreciation for the sangatsu scene behind inner child at 6:04

thank you. i am not well-versed on pop art in general or the evolution of music. i know what i like, and i normally stick to it. for someone who grew up in the 90's, inspired by the alternative music of that time, it is unthinkable that i will even give BTS the time of day. But here we are... i appreciate the objective take on it, it is not pandering to the legions of army to like, it is simply a deeper appreciation of the music BTS does. I appreciate the lyric explanations... see since i cannot understand the lyrics and too lazy to read translations, i rely on the music... and how it makes me feel... its awesome btw. #AOTY

BTS incorporates philosophy, literature and whole other things in their production. They are ARTISTS! Talent, charisma and intelligence in one is a force to be reconned with! Fight me. Very good review Elliott👏👏👏💜💜💜

This is such a well thought out deep analyses that mots7 deserves. Other reviewers just talk about the music, trying to understand bts music without taking in the the lyrics and the overall theme of the album is like eating food without tasting it properly you just wont get it, but ppl dont bother bcoz they dont believe a boyband's music can have such deep layers, only the fans the army are able to appreciate their music in the true sense

And also the part about inner child was spot on, BTS really knows how to convey their sentiments through their songs and art.

10:25 "nobody suffered emotionally" - me laughing in 2023 now knowing how much burn out they were going through, how exhausted they were, how overwhelmed they were. They had considered disbandment, suga's shoulder surgery, theis album came right before the pandemic, depression, anger, anxiety, a canceled world tour, military enlistment on their heads, the govt and public of SK basically playing with their lives, racism and xenophobia from the western industry, and through all of this all they wanted was to make music and meet army again. Oh I love them so much.

(and yes ofc we were talking about it bc of bts and someone told me that they didn't like them bc they are "too clean", which I assumed to think meant "well produced" in contrast to the rougher sound of like the alternative rock or indie rock that that person prefered, as if a scretch or rough vocal on an arctic monkey or mando diao song wasn't just as intentional...)

BTS comes from a personal place. A self-reflective stance on the struggles they face and places a question not only for themselves but for its audience. I think most pop songs i have heard have a basic feel of just having fun but BTS uses pop sound and mixes different genres together in combination with deep lyrics that create a different layer. This is sometimes enhanced by the visuals of a music video that has a variety of different inspirations that can further help the viewer interpret the complexity of the story. I think these aspects of art and literature are beautiful.
