What's hurts the most is that Billie's fans have no idea that she got more fans because of jungkook's love for her music and it made army's decide listen to her. And the fact that the fanbase of one of the boys favorite artists that they would love to work with boo'd like that...... 😞....... I just keep thinking, "what if jungkook saw that clip"😣

I feel like the reason some armies are so quick to attack anyone who even slightly disrespects bts is because armies have been so repeatedly disrespected and made fun of it’s hard for them to not snap or be protective. This of course does not excuse their actions, but it does give an explanation for some of them.

exactly, it's like we've been the brunt of all jokes when it comes to bts, or whenever bts even comes up in conversations. we're made out to be total jokes because loud and toxic fans apparently seem to paint the image of what an army represents now. it's unfair and tiring. if we compared it to being bullied by people at a school, of course people would want to defend themselves and what they're being made fun of for. most armys who argue back about people calling all armys toxic AREN'T even toxic about it ESPECIALLY because they're in the right.. people just see one toxic fan/see someone call our fandom toxic and feel entitled to call out a whole fandom for some close-minded opinion on what an army represents. no wonder armys are tired...

If you had also witnessed your life’s savior (they literally saved many people from giving up on society because of the hidden or blatant prejudices) get death threats online, scared to death when they decided to perform when they could very readily have been shot through the head on stage, supported them when they were cut from multiple music festivals without warning last minute but still decided to perform on an empty dark and dirty stage after shows for the people who support them, realize they get hit by their ‘manager’ and looked used to it, get shamed as “talentless, talking the easy route of idol, wearing makeup all the time” on TV when you know that they work themselves to exhaustion and sleep in the studio to save time, literally filmed their MV in a barren field instead of a studio with one/two cameras and the many other unjust actions and spiteful words against them, Jungkook was a teenager then! 15!, in variety shows, you would also be able to develop the reflexes ARMY has to spot and protect against oncoming trouble and danger. No kidding, being an ARMY entails being the CIA equivalent because only by doing this will these people be able to live. They literally receive death threats. I don’t even want to imagine if any have been executed. Heck, if this was not BTS but ANYBODY else, I would still want to protect them. Nobody should be insulted without basis, nobody should have to face prejudice on first sighting. Everyone deserves to live without worrying for their life, don’t you think so?

another thing that plays a huge part is the fact that majority of bts’ fans are woman, and of course, young female enthusiasm has always been put down and looked down at.
No one can deny that such thing exists since it’s too obvious to miss, even in little things like wordings, young males being described as “dedicated” for their infatuation with a certain sport while young females get called names like “obsessive” “crazy abt ...” and etc for their love of a certain artist or even with other stuff, it’s always them that get linked with words of that sort. it’s sickening, really.

    • @italianspaghettisauce
      @italianspaghettisauce 4 ปีที่แล้ว +377

Either way people would find reasons to dislike BTS and ARMY. If army mainly consisted of girls, they'd say something about straight white girls only liking their faces and put down any of the good BTS or the fandom does because of prejudice. but if ARMY was mainly boys, they'd be called gay and bts twinks, (like every teenage boy favorite insults, gay.) all because of prejudice too. There's no winning regardless of who was the majority of BTS's fans. We're put down for liking BTS, not necessarily because you're a girl, boy, black, white, straight, gay, etc. Sure people will use that as leverage and more of reason to dislike army but that isn't solely what shows their prejudice. It sucks ass and is totally unfair but all we can do is try our best to show people the good ARMY can and has done rather than let the media talk only about the sasaengs.

@@italianspaghettisauce not really true tho, gay and twink is already used for BTS, and the guys in the fandom because they still part of primary female fan base so they are being feminized = gay stereotype.
a lot of bands like Queen and like the Beatles and even solo artists like Elvis had primary female fan base, you can find plenty of mean articles about the Beatles for example, but once they got "the male sign of approval", they got the legendary musicians fit for all genders forever (aka guys like them).

    • @italianspaghettisauce
      @italianspaghettisauce 4 ปีที่แล้ว +136

@@404gram it has in part to do with Korea's beauty standards. Bands like the Beatles weren't called gay or their male fans weren't called gay because they're masculine and they fit the western beauty standards for men, masculine. Guys are allowed to be more feminine in Korea without being "gay" but the west sees a man with makeup, he's automatically gay. So in part, yes, it's cause of the beauty standards

We get mad if they are people that push ARMYS into one category based off of what one person said. Or if they are fake fans that go to fan meets and are rude to BTS. Or they could be you Tbh. We aren't throwing a hissy fit at ANY critique whatsoever. We aren't playing tik tac toe on a reporters forehead for no reason. There really normally is a deep reason for everything we do. And if catergorizing is what you think we do, we could play that soccer game. It would be so easy to, but we don't. We spend our money to support charities, we spend our time to help people in need, we give our love and devotion to do What's right, and if that's laughable in any way, you should sit back and think about that for a minute. It's not funny that a boy band inspired us to see the good in things, to help everyone we can, and most importantly, to love ourselves. Idk if you're a hater, or if you just think it's funny to mess with people. Or if you're just trying to make respectful points. But hear us out, past the toxic people in our fandom, we're probably the most loving and understanding fandom you will ever meet. @@kelpme0309 (Just to give a quick disclaimer: I am an Army myself and I love each BTS member to death.)
Well, your explanation may be true for a part of Armys but I don't think "We" is used correctly in your comment since this "We" is only representing the "good" Armys.
I'll give an example of what I was trying to say in my last comments. Last week or so, I made a comment on Jimin's vocal technique (in this specific case I ranked him below Tae and Jin in a vocal ranking) and said that it was quite bad for the health of his vocal chords (and I didn't put it in a more hurtful way than I did here). Immediately, there were a couple of Armys who responded to that saying that I didn't know anything about singing and "You're not the vocal coach you think you are so shut up" (I never said I'm a professional or anything btw).
So while it is true that a lot of Armys do a lot of good things, there are also Armys who are too sensitive for things that really should just be discussed in a relaxed and respectful manner (I'm always open for a good discussion).

I think that one of the most frustrating things is the absolute illogical idea that they know _more_ about your interest than you do. That after you've dedicated countless valuable hours of your life to enjoying and understanding an artist, they, who'd not ever bothered to extend enough respect to research or listen to the artist with so much as an open mind, now think that _they_ can tell _you_ the _truth_ about the artist.
If you tell them that the songs are meaningful, they'll tell _you_ that you can't understand them anyway and that it's all just white noise. If you tell them that they work hard, they'll tell _you_ that they're just plastic, talentless dolls. If you tell them that they changed your life, that they saved you, that that make you happy, _they'll look at you like you're crazy._
At the end of the day, you're made to know that the thing that _excites_ you, the thing that you're _passionate_ about, the thing that you're _actually educated_ about, is subject to be reduced to the ideas of someone who doesn't realistically know a _thing_ about it.
It's this patronizing, painful exchange of:
    "Their lyricism is incredible."
"You know most of those people don't even write their own songs, right?"
Speaking directly down to you. Rather than even any sliver of open-mindedness ("Don't most of them not write their own songs?" - inquiring your insight), simply the absolute minimization of your education on the subject, as if you don't even have the mental capacity.
It makes you feel like you're not a human because you're not being treated as one. You're being seen as a fool. A brainwashed zombie who has to be reminded that they're brainwashed. An intellectual degenerate of the human race who isn't evolved enough to pursue quality or coherence. For what? For liking an artist?
But the reality is, _they're_ the brainwashed ones. Conditioned to believe in a certain set of ideologies. They're the ones on the bandwagon: the hate bandwagon. They're the ones who are under-researched and who claimed a stance without any information. No matter what you say to them, no matter what perspective or evidence you give them, they will not receive, research, verify, or even demonstrate a willingness to change their minds. They will warp _everything_ into their narrow space of comprehension. _That is being brainwashed._ But the hypocrisy is unbearable.
What you said here really sums it all up. We're tired. We're so _tired._
When something has such a profound, positive impact on you, _you want to tell the world._ But the world has been turned against you. It's an inexplicable pain to be unable to share in something so intricately significant to you for fear of being entirely dehumanized by even those closest to you. To be fitted to a box for the very thing that makes you feel free. To be seen as only your label instead of the immense internal change.
That's just the thing. They think that the dark patch is a phase, and when you suddenly start to come out of it, it's just the phase ending. If you tell them that the sudden happiness and alleviation came from a K-Pop artist, you're a crazy fan and that's a phase, too. Yes, your actions speak for themselves, until somebody else decides to speak for your actions.
Thank you so much for this organized, articulate, informative, and honest video, where we can all find comfort and understanding. This perspective and empathy is very much needed in this community, and I'm so grateful for your voice for us in this matter. First video, and I'm subscribing. What makes their music so special that they can listen to it in peace when you can't?

I know the army community is so more than what they tell us we are. They see what they want to see and they believe what their "idols" say, like sheeps. I was so angry, not because they where attacking me as an individual, but because they attacked the whole community that consists of such amazing, inspiring, intelectual, caring people. And they attacked the reason we are so united and enpowering, BTS. It was a bad day and i really hope it doesnt repeat. As you said,we are tired of these attack. We are people you see walking down the streets, in stores, school, jobs, etc. just because we support kpop doesn’t mean you get the right to clump us up into a group and label us all crazy. You’re not allowed to take out rights from us just because we support a group of artist that write moving songs about real life problems. At this point I’m done with the racist comments, Everyone. Is . Human. Everyone . Is . Different. We shouldn’t look at peoples differences and shame them. We should look at their differences and admire them. No one should be afraid to be themselves because they will get criticism. Everyone should love themselves because they are different, unique. Support each other, love each other, be KIND to one another. Little steps at a time, and doesn’t it feel good to do something for someone? A little compliment could make someone’s day. my dog hate me i didn’t mean it like that, I agree with you. By “push bts high” I meant that’s why I stream their music and stuff to get them to top the charts cuz I want people to actually pay attention to their music. I want people to recognize them because the American music market is treated like the only one that matters. BTS gets almost no radio play but still end up charting pretty high because of fan efforts to stream and buy their music. I don’t mean bombarding people online about them or anything like that and I hate the fancam thing on Twitter. If someone doesn’t seem interested or if things start to get out of hand, I wouldn’t push them down anyone’s throat.

I would add one thing, and it's that it's not only because of the western glass ceiling that ARMY is overzealous. It's because since before their debut, BTS were attacked, relentlessly, by basically everyone. The Korean music industry tried every dirty trick in the book to sabotage them, the Korean gp treated them as, like Suga puts it in UGH, the "village drum" anyone can hit without worry, they were mistreated in variety shows, fucked over in music shows, betrayed by their former friends (RM mixtape is a great listen) , and subject of organized attacks by other Kpop fandoms alongside ARMY, who were at the time too small in numbers to fight back.
Some things lightened up after their domestic and western success, but then others were added, like all the racist, insulting western media coverage.
So ARMY is overzealous because at all times, and since always, BTS is under attack. I just wish they'd leave us be.

I think it's kinda a vicious circle. Armys get (way too) defensive when talking about BTS, which leads to people who don't listen to BTS thinking Armys are obsessive (which is true in some cases). This has as consequence that they'd hate on BTS even more (well, they actually hate Armys but they're associated to BTS so they hate the group as well) and then Armys get even more defensive. This goes on forever and it's come to a point where BTS' members can't be critisised even a little bit without Armys attacking them (and I mean actual rational critisism) and Armys not being able to show some love towards BTS without others attacking them for being stupid, obsessive, childish, etc.
I think this vicious circle could only be stopped if one of the two sides stopped what they're doing (being intolerant towards every Army or everyone who doesn't like BTS)

      @moonray61 4 ปีที่แล้ว +38

Benten Van Nuffelen That's not the point, if BTS got criticized most of us wouldn't truly care. But they don't get criticized, they get hated on. It's different, people aren't trying to give their two cents about something, they're trying to bash them. That's why ARMYs get mad, because they don't even try to hide how biased they are about the whole situation, and if one of us try to point it out or just call them out, we get labeled as "aggressive toxic teenage girls", even if we're being truly respectful and/or it's clearly an adult talking. Most people don't care as long they get to mock the group that's everywhere, they get bothered about it and they feel the need to shit on them to prove a point.

I really don’t appreciate that so many people only look at what you called the vocal minority and they refuse to look at the majority of kind hearted Armys. BTS has helped so many people through their music and they’ve helped me through some murky times.
I’m sick and tired of people at my school thinking me and some of my friends that also like Kpop are weird. They think we only care about Kpop for their looks but they never truly try to understand us. They never watch a MV or listen to a song. Some of my teachers have looked into BTS and have watched a MV or two or just looked up a song and understand the fandoms. They understand why we like them. My teachers have looked at the lyrics and have seen what they mean to us. One of my teachers listened to the Truth Untold and she understands what the song means to us. These people at my school who give me or my friends weird looks because we like Kpop are so annoying.
Me and my friends are also Asians and my friends have gotten looks and have been told things like “Corona time!” Or “Ooooohh! Look! It’s the corona breed!” Or “Stay away from her! She’s probably infected!”. I haven’t been told anything like that because my dad is American and I have double eyes lids and light skinned, as if I was just another American, just slightly yellow toned. My friends are genuinely hurt by these dumb people’s words and actions and I feel so bad for my friends. Their indirect words also hurt me too. These people have to realize that saying that type of stuff isn’t funny and it’s not going to help anyone. People can be so dumb.
My friends and I live in America btw
Sorry if this was really long
I purple you Army! Stay strong and healthy! We can get through this virus and ignorant people together! 💜💜💜

man i hope this goes viral, it sure deserves it. you explain your thoughts and views so well and obviously put a LOT of work into it.
i dont use social media bc i dont need to be told by people 24/7 my favorite band sucks and i suck too for it, so i didn't know about this tweet situation. it's nothing new, and not surprising but still disappointing. funny thing is this sort of treatment happens ALL THE TIME if a majority-female-fan-group gets too big, we get told we're obsessed and crazy and dumb, but most of the time these people are more obsessed with us then we are with whatever it is we're enjoying (music, movies, shows, books...) and rarely (if ever) have an open mind or kind words. it's more than "i dont like what you like", it's "i hate what you like and also you and i'm going to be very vocal about it now". i've seen and experienced it time and time again, now at 24, i'm just tired.
anyway, thank you for this very intelligent and well made video, good luck with everything. subscribed!
edit: i forgot to say, that billie eilish video at the end was perfect haha

It generally takes a lot to hurt me, but I'm hurt. As a army, I can never freely say "I love BTS" without being bashed upon that 'they're gay' or 'you just wanna marry them'. I've been an army since 2016 and have stopped listening since. I'm glad that my parents don't judge my music taste, I can go home and listen to kpop. I've been abused verbally, told that I am a worthless piece of shit, all because I liked a certain boy band or even genre of music. I thought it was something you could enjoy, like it was a free space to be yourself. But, what's the point in even trying to be yourself, when everyone seemingly likes to pick on you til you've had enough. Even if they're artist, BTS has platforms, they see those comments. Shitty people don't even realize what fucking work it took to get them where they are now, nor do they see them as another artist. I'm so put up with the fact that they think of them with disgust, THEY'RE HUMANS TOO! SO ARE YOU AND I!! why can't people just let us be. I'm 13, and ik some people are going to laugh or giggle. I'm just like you, so why can't you treat me like a normal person when I say I'm ARMY? Is it because you think of me as some psycho fangirl or a prissy brat? I'm human, treat me like one. I was hurting and BTS helped me out of it, no other artist talked about the love yourself with SO much care, fully putting it out there. Judge me, bruise me, hurt me. But what you will never do, is pretend that army deserves bullshit. We have either been there since debut or even fairly new. Please.. all I ask is that you see us as regular people, who happen to stan K-pop. *Please*

I rarely cry, but this situation has been bothering me for years, ever since I became a BTS fan.
I'm never letting people label our fandom the worst things just because they have prejudices and they don't want to understand.
So many times ARMYs said the right things, in more than 2 years being active in the fandom (let's not count 1 year in which I wasn't following the community and I was pretty much being a stan "on my own") I've seen so many smart arguments completely ignored by kpop stans, journalists, critics, locals, gamers, literally anyone who isn't an ARMY at this point. And I'm tired of it because whatever they want to hate us for, they don't apply those standards to everyone, just to who they want to demonize.
I've never seen such a dedicated, smart, and overall good fandom in my life.
I'll forever be grateful to ARMY for opening my eyes, making me learn about issues and helping making a change in this world.
BTS and ARMY helped me realize I, too, had prejudices I needed to get rid of and they helped me find my voice again when I had lost any hope of living in a better world.

Before I get into my reflection, I would like to say that this video was really insightful, and I also loved the essay style to the video, with a introduction to the topic at hand, the evidence, and the explanation behind everything, as well as a conclusion. I think you did a really good job at explaining your thoughts.
I came here and watched this with a open mind. For someone who does not listen to BTS -- my reason being that I don't understand the language to be able to appreciate the music -- I also was one of the people who saw Froste's tweet as a joke, not understanding why he received so much hate. In fact, I would like to claim that Froste's intent with the tweet was not to spew hate against BTS fans either, and that he also did not know what it meant to tweet something like that. I also used to think, from only being exposed to the perspective of the non-BTS fans, that BTS fans were dedicated to the band-members and I fed into most of the stereotypes. But, I am from Asia myself, and although I am not from Eastern Asia, I empathize with those who are subjected to the xenophobic comments that many people make these days, especially due to the current global situation. I absolutely do not identify with those hateful people, but I still like to believe that many of them did not know that their comments were in fact xenophobic, and that they too may have been simply attempting (however, failing) to make a joke. I also do not think the actions, behaviors, and comments of the leader of the Western superpower country help to decrease the xenophobia and racism (that's a topic for another time).
But now that I have watched this video and processed the information presented, I would like to thank you, Elliot, for calmly presenting the opposing perspective. I have now understood why the tweet was insensitive towards the BTS fandom, and in fact agree to a certain extent that Froste's tweet was not the best worded. But, I still do not believe that Froste deserves the hate (and the terrible threats) that he received from the tweet, because -- just like you mentioned -- I don't think he was ill-intentioned with the tweet, but that he simply wanted to make a joke, and slide in there his appreciation (perhaps?) for how dedicated BTS fans are, but do agree that he use that as a learning opportunity regarding xenophobia, racism, and stereotypes. I do however find him in the wrong for the other tweets that you cited.
Nonetheless, I hope other people also gained a new perspective in this issue, and perhaps came to realize that some of their beliefs regarding stereotypes were not true.

    • @exquis_
      @exquis_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

Thank you for watching with open mind and trying to get our point when others didn't. I would also like to add that if he had worded the tweet differently like e.g. 'If BTS wished for a Coronavirus vaccine, their stans would find a cure in 24h' that would give the intended (?) dedicated fandom outlook without the burden on the asian group. This tweet also came after weeks of us BTS fans encounter wishes of them getting the virus or death from non fans and especially from the gaming community just because any associated news on them apparently correlated with coronavirus jokes. After a not so good first interaction with Froste, this one felt as much antagonizing as every other.
Hope my ramblings make sense, english isn't my first language. Thanks for reading.

I feel like the reason why a lot of ARMYs are a little overprotective is because of BTS’ past. Anyone who would take a glance at them would be like, “Oh, they’re a famous kpop group, that’s it.” In reality, ARMY know a lot more about the members than them, and have seen the things that they’ve been through. BTS were looked down upon, they received criticism, they didn’t have a lot of money, people doubted them, and their shows would get cut. I believe that ARMY has seen these things and refuse to let the past repeat: let the members see hate and not have anyone to support them and comfort them. We want to protect them and let them know that we’re there for them. BTS have been at the lowest and they worked hard, as well as any other group, idol, artist, athlete, or any other human in general. I am able to see both sides of an argument, and I understand where certain people are coming from. I just think that our society should learn how to respect others and become more understanding. Anyways, I Purple You 💜💜💜

It sucks to constantly be the world's punching bag just because people refuse to see how good and decent the fandom really is... People constantly accuse the whole fandom of bullying and sending hate to other groups, but don't they think if it really was the entire fandom doing this, we would have trended hashtags or phrases? Their music inspired me in so many ways and kept me motivated. I just wish they would at least say, “I’m glad they make you happy.” or something similar to that. I just don’t want to be labeled as someone who is obsessed. At least I’m a 13 year old girl that doesn’t chase BTS around nor try to get close to them. After I gave them an honest deep dive, I was astounded by my ignorance. To see millions of people share a positive world view through a pop culture figure was something I never imagined would exist. This video is amazing. I'm gonna be honest and say it: I liked the tweet. Didn't see it as disrespectful, just a funny way of expressing how dedicated the stans are. Now I can see it being very hurtful for those on the other side of the joke, receiving hate after hate and never being able to say anything in return. I still find the tweet kinda funny in a bubble that dismisses the context; if we see the history of the guy with ARMY, and how the internet in general paint ARMY, it is quite bad.
I'm just curious if the same tweet would've been received differently if someone else, someone very vocal on how ARMY is a good fandom, had tweeted it. I actually think the problem is people don't really know how much good ARMY have done, they just know the bad stuff, and if you see the tweet with that mindset you understand it as "oh, of course, BTS stans are just obsessed". Maybe if it was tweeted to an audience that understands ARMY it would've been viewed as an innocent joke.
    Maybe.
I'm just trying to make sense of the hurt everyone felt, as I still don't think the tweet in itself is that bad. I think it might be the repetition that makes tweets like these offensive.
Anyway, I never considered how hurt BTS fans would be because of continuous jokes. I normally make those jokes too, but now I'm gonna try to stop and instead bring the good to the spotlight. It actually amazes me the kind of things ARMY is able to achieve when they put their minds on something good. It makes me feel a bit guilty for only liking and listening to kpop because of the great music and beautiful visuals :(

There's nothing wrong with only liking the music and visuals of kpop. Army go further because we can't help but like bts for who they are, but not all ARMYs are like that, I know solo stans and casual fans of BTS exist too. The tweet hurts because even if it was tweeted first as a joke, some vocal people who already dislike BTS and army from the start can, will, and DID jump in to loudly say they wish it did happen and that BTS gets coronavirus, wether they'd admit it wasn't much of a joke or not. As a fan of bts as musicians and as persons, it hurts because I care about them, and wishing ill of someone I care about, especially when it has already been a running joke for Asians = Corona, makes me angry. Racism makes me angry, and unfairness makes me angry, and I can't exactly fault the armys who responded with the expected toxicity. I won't do it but I understand why they did. I also understand why Froste made the tweet but I think he really, really could've educated himself a bit more to not perpetuate the veiled racism his hashtag just spawned.

I didn’t do any digging on it though. I put this video in my watch later when it was posted because I hoped you could help me understand. This video gave me more insight. I am a part of Star Wars fandom and I very much appreciate the moments that were added about it. My section of that fandom is treated almost identical to how army is often treated. I would very much like to see an end to this type of discrimination. It will take time but as long as there are people like you and the army you discussed at the end, I have hope. Thank you 💜

Being a female fan of a certain artist (in particular BTS) is hard Literally Every narrow minded or stupid person thinks that "you like them coz they're hot or cute or u are a kid" like I. Don't. Get. It. Why!!?!! Just why!!?! They just helped us get thru bad times and they are really humble ppl tbh I think Armys are the best human beings in this planet and I'm an Asian so like why does everything that is happening supposed to be related to Asians. They should actually take us Seriously or it might just end up with them coming off as dumb for hating on Nice Ppl .
Anyways Stan BTS for Clear skin and a happy life 💗💜

I wanted to say this, people act like we only care about their abs or thighs, but NO. Boygroup fans talk a lot about how idols are more than their body.

@@user-0001. ikr like if you are a true Fan and if you respect your idol it doesn't matter if they has abs or thighs. You just love them for the person they are and for their personality

whether you are an army or not, you have to applaud army’s for their charity work. many armies donated the money from ticket refunds towards coronavirus and did so many other things as well

things ARMYs can’t do without being judged, criticized, hated, and called horrible things
    1. praise BTS for their hard work and achievements
    2. defend BTS when they are hated on
    3. listen to their music
    4. smile
    5. breathe
    6. exist
    it’s true😔🤦‍♀️
