    Thank you for showing the water bath canning process by using the Presto Pressure Canner. I was thinking to replace my old water bath canner for stainless pan but was not sure if I want to have a new water bath pot or a larger pressure canner. I think I now know which one I will get. Thansk!

      You are so kind! Thank you!! 🥰 I’m trained as a teacher - but found my calling at home for two decades to care for my children and household. I went back to teaching with local in-person classes until everything shut down in 2020. So, I’m trying a new type of classroom! :) It’s an adjustment, but I can reach more people! Glad to connect with you!

    I saw in a video where they dip pears into boiling water, count to 20 and pull them out and put in cold water and slip the peelings off with your hands. Do that right away or they won't peel as well.

    Never canned pears or any fruit actually, so I was glad I came across your video and see you skipped the green ones. Now I know I can't can the pears I bought today. Guess I'll bag them up and plan on doing it a couple of days

    • @LifeAtTheNest
      @LifeAtTheNest  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good idea! Let the green ones ripen in a brown paper bag first. Check in daily, they can ripen quickly, and inconsistently. You want them ripe enough you can easily cut into them but not mushy.

    Hello. I have the same jars. Do I really have to take the rings off afterwards to clean or is it not better to tightly screw lid and ring on and leave it at that ? Thank you 🍐🍐

    • @LifeAtTheNest
      @LifeAtTheNest  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello! Leaving the ring is not only unnecessary, it can be dangerous. Removing the ring after canning, and washing the top gives you a chance to ensure the jar is sealed. If left, mold can grow between the ring and the lid and get into the jar upon opening. And any improperly sealed jar that may open to relieve pressure, will be unable to with a ring on, resulting in a cracked jar. Also, if moisture remains, the ring can rust and make the jar difficult to open. Having said all that, there are lots of canners who insist on leaving them. Just know what to look for! 😉

    Is it ok to use ordinary tap water, ie municipal water, in the jars?? No pne has mentioned the type ofwater, some folks are on tank water, others municipal water.

    • @LifeAtTheNest
      @LifeAtTheNest  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve always lived on well water - so I never thought about this question. My guess would be that if it’s safe to drink, then yes, safe to can! I’d check with your state’s ag extension agency office to be sure.

    can you flavour the syrup? I have seen jars of fruit in the shops and they have whole cinnamon or cloves and even vanilla etc in them. would you add to the syrup infuse or to the jars when you pack?

    • @LifeAtTheNest
      @LifeAtTheNest  ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely! I highly recommend following tested recipes. If you check my bio for my Amazon Storefront, you’ll find a link to canning supplies. I list the USDA canning guide in there, it’s an excellent resource. I also have a few other canning books I love. They are tested for canning times, and are safe if followed correctly. Having said that, if you use enough sugar while canning fruit, it’s generally safe to infuse flavors without risk.

    Thankyou for this video.
    I canned some pears last week for the first time.
    Now the pears in the top of the jars turn brown.
    The lid is still perfectly sealed.
    Please some advice what I could have done better?

    • @LifeAtTheNest
      @LifeAtTheNest  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      As I peel my pears to prepare for canning, I put them in a bath of water and ascorbic acid to help prevent browning. That helps a lot! Also, be sure you cover them with your sugar water in the jars.

    The only pears that I like are D'anjou but they fall apart so easily I don't think they would last five minutes in the hot water before turning to mush. Have you ever canned that type of pear?

    • @LifeAtTheNest
      @LifeAtTheNest  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes - I have. They can be canned and hold up well. Ideally, you want to can them slightly under-ripe. And be gentle with them.

    • @LifeAtTheNest

      Are you in the US? Hardware and grocery stores usually have them. also Walmart & Amazon both sell them. I have several Amish dry goods stores near me that sell canning supplies.

  • @alexmayer9159

    What's the rationale behind only using the lids once? I've always re-used all mine, and the jars always seal just fine?

    • @LifeAtTheNest
      @LifeAtTheNest  ปีที่แล้ว

      Many people re-use them, but the quality of the seal decreases with each use. It’s not considered good practice to re-use because they may dry and not seal, causing spoilage.

  • @nelsonsousa9801
    @nelsonsousa9801 ปีที่แล้ว

    I can't understand why they need to go in the jars cut side down. Won't this potentially be trapping air pockets?

    • @LifeAtTheNest
      @LifeAtTheNest  ปีที่แล้ว

      They don’t have to go upside down, but the layering allows more pears per jar. And fewer broken pears. I remedy the air pocket issue by running a knife alongside the jars.

  • @evelynjepson5955
    @evelynjepson5955 ปีที่แล้ว

    i put mine in slightly boiling water for 4 seconds, then take out and put in water, and skins come off without wasting any pear.

      I LOVE that this info has finally arrived in my life! What a timesaver. I do this for tomatoes and peaches. Never realized it worked for pears. I’ve always done it this way because it was how I was taught! Thanks!!

  • @amandabeckwith1528

    Why do you do core side down?

    • @LifeAtTheNest
      @LifeAtTheNest  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They “nest” together better this way - and you can get more per jar than just dumping them in. Plus - they look so much prettier that way!

    Wow! Your passive aggressive with that interruption, you even added your irritation with text. Poor guy! You should of edited that.

    • @LifeAtTheNest
      @LifeAtTheNest  ปีที่แล้ว

      My children are fine! The ice bin is a family joke - no aggression, passive or otherwise. It has become something we laugh at, no one seems to need ice or crinkling snacks until the camera is on… which picks up every little sound. They were cracking up behind the camera. Now they do it just to poke me, it’s all in good fun. I usually edit it out. What you don’t see are the 15-20 takes needed to film around a busy family. I left this interruption in because that’s what “Life at the Nest” is… chaotic and funny!
