Granny says "Virginia is going to grow up and make somebody a good wife". I said "if she grows up to be like you I know she will". Granny said "I think she is being raised up right". Me, "yeah. I think so too". Those pears look good! Thanks for sharing Justin.

Canning pears and making memories. The memories are more valuable than the fruit. My "Mamaw" and I sat on the back steps washing and cutting up tomatoes until Riga Mortis set in on our behinds. She smelled every one of those tomatoes to make sure there was no rot in any piece. That was in the 1960s. Your video brought back wonderful memories. As a kid my pears won a blue ribbon at the county fair and my green beans won a blue ribbon at the Indiana State Fair, but I still learned from you showing your mother's techniques. Wish I could have known her. Thank you for sharing what she taught you. Peg in Florida

My Mama didn't cook the pairs before canning. She just filled the jars and poured the syrup over them and them water bathed them. I love the little 'truth bombs ' you slip in while you're chattin. Lots might miss them, but maybe someone will hear and listen and learn.

Justro the preservation of food is mighty important always has been but maybe even more so now with things that are coming.
But just as important I think are the memories that you are making with your girls. You made the comment about being five and reaching in the bowl as momma made them that's wonderful now and your girls are getting that same memories. Because like you said at the end momma wasn't here to ask. Make em while you can. Thanks for sharing them with us. Keep up the good work and God bless you all

Some ppl think our sand pears are too hard to fool with. But can't never did do nothing. When I was growing up in the 70's we lived about 22 miles from town. When us kids got sick stomach about the only treatment we had was pear juice, peach or blackberry. We all lived into our 60's now guess it worked pretty good.

Cook the soft ones down and make pear butter. Pear jelly from the peals. I'm in the coastal region my peaches always fall off before they get a chance to get very big ,and my apples get ceder rust, the plums always bloom to early and a late frost takes them out ,so my pears are all that usually make.

Justro did your momma ever make pear preserves? The kind we make in our area involves leaving them out overnight in the pot. This is done so the DO oxidize and get that pink/rosy color. Haven't made them in years but once peeled you put them in the pot dry and sprinkle the sugar over them. Let them set then go on with cooking and canning them up.

We love canned pears and a Pear cobbler. I find it interesting the difference in times fruit gets ripe in NW Alabama compared to up your way. Idk if it is because we are in a colder spot of our State and the way the jet stream flows during the winter but our apples and pears don't ripen til about the middle of September. Peaches are usually ready about the middle of June. Maybe it is just the type we have in our area that's different. Idk.. either way I enjoyed the video. My momma taught me how to can pears about 5 years before she passed. Good memories.

Isn't that the truth, when you get behind with the farm or garden you are always behind. I was stressing out about it last night after canning 24 quarts of grape juice and my husband said, "you do this every year, why do you grow so much!" Because it is worth the effort! Guess I am more of an ant than a grasshopper. Well back to the pears! Glad to know about the salt soak since I am low on fruit fresh.

My momma and I always made a few jars of mint pears for upset tummies or a fancy dessert. Of course, most jars were plain, like yours. Just add 1 shot of peppermint schnapps and several drops of green food coloring to each pint. I find these pears settle my stomach as well as Pepto bismo. Or serve with a scoop of ice cream to guests after dinner.

When making applesauce, I would always make some with pears. Apple & pear sauce to die for. Also, in canning pears, I've never pre-cooked them. It makes them turn into baby food when in the canning process. When preparing pears I would place in sink of cold water with lemon juice to prevent from browning.

If you have some hard pears, I was given an old Pear Relish recipe that was popular in TX.
    15 crisp large pears
    12 med bell peppers
    12 med onions
    3 med hot peppers
2 sm jars of mustard ( no longer considered safe canning... So use dry mustard and seeds and vinegar to make it without store additives... Or try 2 to 4 T of dry mustard/seed as a start?)
    2 T celery seed
    2 T salt
    3 c. Sugar
    2 c. cider vinegar
... Chop pears, onions, bell pepper. Mince hot pepper. Combine all and boil 20 minutes. Process in boiling water bath. I'll let you research what would be a safe processing time.

On another video, someone bought a place and the seller told them that the apple tree in the yard made the BEST apple pie . . . they discovered that the "apple tree" was actually a pear tree, which left me wondering just what a pear pie, prepared like an apple pie, would taste like!

Famous in Europe, the Finnish-made Mehu-Liisa juicer uses a gentle steam process to extract pure natural juices from fruit, without the need to peel, core or de-stem. You can make juices, jellies and syrups without squeezing, straining or making a mess.
It also blanches vegetables for freezing, and is great for steam-cooking clams, lobsters, sweet corn, etc. Foods prepared in this way retain their flavors, as well as much of the vitamin and mineral content usually lost in boiling. For your fallen apple can be very useful.

Howdy Robin, ours is 20 or more years old and it has quiet a bit. Maybe yours will have more all the time.

You mentioned treating your peach trees,... What do you use to keep the worms off of them?
    Thanks!

I did enjoy this of course. But I’m looking forward to playing in an old barn with the spiders and snakes next week too 😁😂 I guess the chickens had a feast after you finished peeling all those pears. I think I’m down to my last jar that I canned last year 😭

Guess I need to plant a pear tree. I’m in zone 7a West Tennessee. Anyone have a suggested variety? I know nothing about pears.
