A friend has 2 large pear trees and told me to come and get as many as I want. I now know what I’m going to do with them. And I love that streamer canner and I’m going to check out getting one of them, looks a lot easier of dealing with a heavy water bath canner of boiling water. Thank you and many blessings.
Hello Melissa! Thank you for sharing this tip! You are such an inspiration to us and so many others! Thank you for touching our lives and educating all of us! We are a farm family of all girls and we are learning homesteading, homeschooling, and everything else along the way! Our 14 year old daughter is the voice behind our channel where, like you, hopes to help and educate in any small way she can! THANK YOU for inspiring! Blessings to you from your friends from Kansas!
I live in Arkansas and have an Asian Pear tree. I dry my pears, but sprinkle a bit of cinnamon on them first. I snack on them during the Winter and they're great. (on a side note, I want to encourage everyone to consider growing Sun Chokes as a survival food) Mrs Norris, Ma'am, you do a good job. I pray blessing on you and your loved ones...
I found that a strawberry/tomato corer is also ideal for use in removing seed cores in many other produce items, including pears. Fast and easy, plus there is basically no waste because teh corer is so small.
Wonderful tip and a very helpful video. Only wish I had waited one more day before I did my pears last night. Would have definitely made some changes. Thank you so much for always sharing your knowledge.
I just started on a half bushel of pears from a local farm, I did 7 quarts in a very light honey/water syrup. There's still a bunch left even after starting a small batch of pear butter! Next round will be in pints 😊
Great tip...done that with peaches but not pears. I like to use a melon ball spoon for getting out the core. Love your videos. Thank you and God bless.
I'm watching and thinking a soft no nap towel or paper towel will wipe that skin off without losing flesh, and a melon baller would cut the time down and lose less flesh. I bought 40 lb of beautiful transitional pears, and just had them delivered this week from Azure Standard. Thanks for confirming my idea of blanching!🎉🥰
We’ve used honey for years in canning, yes you do loose some of the nutrients but the trade of is your fruit doesn’t turn brown over time, when we used sugar this was not the case. We also use honey when we freeze fruit such as peaches and strawberries.
Hey Melissa! I've been trying encourage people to earth quake proof there pantries and you living in pacific nw you could give very good advice. It (quake)would ruin alot of hard work. Thanks
Use the funnel to put the pears in the jar they slide right in. No need to risk burning your hands or damaging the fruit fiddling with your hands and scraping against the jar neck. I use standards with the funnel.
Hello Melissa, just found and subscribed to your wonderful informative site. I'm checking out Azure now. I also love that big bin next to your stove for storing looks like flours , bread and such. Where did you get it and what is it called? thank you
I have a question two days ago I canned applesauce and apple butter but today I realized I didn’t start the timer when it started to boil I started the timer as soon as I put the jars in can I re-process them or do I have to take the contents out of the reheat it and re-put them in jars
Oo curious if there will be an answer to this. This seems like a good idea. I'm about to can some and I decided to use organic apple juice that I'll slightly dilute with spring water.
Hello, I'm interested in buying your Everything Worth Preserving book but I'm in New Zealand - when will it be available for those outside the US/Canada please? Thanks
Question. Can you can Asian pears without the added lemon juice if you pressure can? I am new to canning and had different types of pears that I pressure canned all together and some of those were Asian pears. I did not use any lemon and canned at 6-7lbs of pressure. I used the instructions that came with my presto canner, but didn’t know that Asian pears need to be acidified. That was about a month ago. Any idea on if this is safe or how I can go about finding out? Thanks and I look forward to using the tips from this video next time!
I used my steam canner for the first time a few days ago, and my tiny home is very cold (no space for a wood stove sadly). I thought it would be a good idea to add a step when removing the top, I waited about half an hour to remove it, but I propped it up slightly first for 5 minutes. After most of the steam found its way out through the propped cover, I then removed it completely. i was worried that the cold air from my cabin would hit the jars to fast. Is what I did recommended, or am I wasting my time?
When I teach home preservation I always mention don’t set jars in a drafty place. I think it would depend on how severe the temperature difference would be. If your room is 10° colder or less I wouldn’t worry; just keep out of open window draft.
Hi. Can anyone give some advice please? I canned my pears last week. And now my pears start to turn brown in the top of the jar. The seal is still perfectly sealed. Does anyone know what I could have done better?
since I grow and buy organic - I don't peel my fruit - other than consistent texture - is there a reason to peel them? Myth or fact that a lot of nutrients are in the peel ? this is what I thought ?
I tried the this my pears ares a really small and I’m not sure what happened but most of the lids buckled and I do know how to use finger tight but first time using a steam canner I’m so disappointed since I spent 80 on the stupid canner now what
@@daishahr the lids buckled because you tightened the bands too tight, it wasn't the steam canner that did it. Simply don't tighten the bands as tight and test a run of water until you get it down so you're not wasting produce. However you can re-cam the pears with new lids if it's been within 24 hours since processing originally
@@MelissaKNorristhey buckled and then straightened out after they sat a bit I could hear them popping in the steamer is that normal? The second batch I left them loose and they still buckled
This is absolutely the safe way to can pears. You don't can one jar at a time so you have to fill them all. The liquid is still hot and so are the contents going in. It's also safe to raw pack and can pears.

I use a small cookie scoop (that i scored at a thrift shop for 19 cents 😁) to core my pears.. actually i think it's called a melon baller
Yep. Been using one for decades.
We grow 13 organic fruits including pears. We also buy from Azure Standard now they added route near us. Love the vanilla.
I did 15 gallons of pears this year.. oh boy I peaked everyone. Thanks for the tip. Kath
This looks like such a time saver! Thank you for showing us this method!!!
Between the boiling, and hand removal of the peels, it would seem like using a peeler on them would be faster (assuming you are quick with a peeler).
Our pear tree was loaded this year. Gonna preserve some this week! Thanks ❤️
Thank you for this tip. I have a pear tree in my yard and I make pear butter and slice pears. This will help me greatly.
Wonderful tip and a very helpful video. Only wish I had waited one more day before I did my pears last night. Would have definitely made some changes. Thank you so much for always sharing your knowledge.
Good morning Melissa. Those canned pears look absolutely delicious. - the perfect seasonal Autum dessert. 😊
Wow thanks Melissa, what a great tip. I have spent hours peeling pears and its such a pain. I gotta try your blanching method!
Use same blanching process for ones tomatoes in removing skins.👍
Thank you so much for sharing your recipe for canning pears.

Great teaching video! Thanks for explaining the process so well 😊
So many pans and utensils and so many steps. Gotta wonder if there is a much simpler faster way ....

Our pear season is done but I will definitely be trying it. Every year my finger gets it. We have cooking pears so they are like stone.
I love to use a melon baller to scoop out the center.
I'll try this today

I use sugar and my pears are pure white 2 yrs later.
I am not new to azure and the code worked for me.
Cool this is something I can do. All thumbs here. Thanks very much
Wonderful video! Please, where did you get your lovely copper kettle? Thank you for your valuable instruction!
I find our Bartletts are too mushy for canning. Kiefer is larger & don't get mushy. It is a month later than others, early Oct in Northern Indiana.
Have used any leftover syrup for haymaker's punch also.

Hello Melissa! You are amazing. So beautiful and having such great ideas. I live your channel. 🙏❤️
The peels come off easier if you just rub the pear while it's in the cold water
Great information🍐 Thank you Melissa 🙂
Thanks Melissa
This was awesome. Thank you!

Can i make a "simple syrup" with pureed pears ? I dont want to add sugar

🤣😂 yes, it's the first time I've had a gas stove in my life and love it.

Can the instant pot be used for steam canning if one has the canning series of instant brands.
They have not passed third party testing, I personally wouldn't use it for canning
Can the cinnamon sticks be used again or composted after they've been used in canning?
Hi Melissa 👋
What size of stainless bowls do you have there?
Do you wait for the water to reboil to start your time or start the time right after adding?
I start right after adding

Thanks Melissa, Can I use a steam canner on an electric stove top?
Absolutely

Question? I noticed some of your pears had bruises on them. And you canned it. Does it make a difference? From other shows, they cut them out.
@@jaylynnthompson6836 I removed any bruises
Although this is a quick method I didn't find it difficult peeling pears with a potato peeler.
I have Asian pears. Why do I have to remove the skin?
Hi. Can anyone give some advice please? I canned my pears last week. And now my pears start to turn brown in the top of the jar.

Wife and I liked the video especially about the citrus. We both have long hair. Her only comment is that your hair should be up. 😅👍
What kind of pears are you canning?
PLEASE tell what kind of pear this is. This did not work with my sand pears. Thank you!
HINT: A MELON baller scoop works great, less waste to scooping seeds out.
I use a melon baller to take out the core of my pears
Why not use tongs to load the jars? It would give you greater control over stacking the fruit and should be quicker for you to finish.
I heard it was dangerous to can with honey...wonder what the truth is and why...
Where did you get your bubble popper?
since I grow and buy organic - I don't peel my fruit - other than consistent texture - is there a reason to peel them? Myth or fact that a lot of nutrients are in the peel ? this is what I thought ?
With canning peels harbor a higher bacteria load and should be removed

You don't even have to peel them! Much healthier and less work.
I thought this was about stocking shelves, not canning fruit. Oh.
It says super simple canned pear recipe and one does stock their shelves with canned fruit ☺️
How do you know if you have an asian pear.
Wondering the same. We get tons of pears from two trees in our front yard. No idea what variety.
When I buy Asian pears in the grocery store they are shaped differently, more apple-ish. Also, when you bite into them they are crunchy-er, again, more apple-ish.

Canning pears can’t be as tedious as she did 🫤
