On “My Car Story” we're in Rosemont IL at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals on 11-17-22.
We’re looking at a 1972 Buick GS Gran Sport in Flame Orange Paint. The car comes with a 455 CI V8 “Stage 1” engine with an automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Bert Major. Bert’s had this car since 2021. Bert shares he was looking for a 1970 Buick GS, however when at the auto dealer to see the 1970, this 1972 just was delivered so they made a deal and here is the car.

People tend to forget that Buick made some bad ass muscle cars back in the day . Bert's flame orange GS 1 is proof . Thanks Lou

1972 Buick GS Gran Sport Stage 1 455.
The Buick Gran Sport package was available on some Buick models starting in the mid-1960s. The first car to be equipped with the Gran Sport package was the 1965 Buick Riviera Gran Sport "Nailhead" V8 with hide-away headlights and a drastic change in appearance from the 1963-1964 Buick Riviera, which was one of the first cars to introduce the "Coke Bottle" styling (It was first introduced on the 1962 Studebaker Avanti, another iconic and revolutionary car that unfortunately, NEVER saw the light of day) seen on other cars such as the Pontiac GTO, Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac Firebird, Ford Mustang, Oldsmobile 442, Ford Torino, Mercury Cyclone, and more. The Gran Sport package featured Gran Sport badges on the exterior, an updated interior, and more significant engines.
Models that specifically have the Gran Sport package as an option include the Riviera and the Skylark (I don't know any other cars with the "Gran Sport" package according to my limited knowledge). The Gran Sport for the Riviera went from 1965 until 1976, with the most iconic years being 1966-1973. The 1971-1973 would be the second most known (Particularly because of its mixed reaction to its "Boat-Tail" styling and the fact that it had some issues, such as rainwater and smog getting into the car) while the 1966-1970 would be the most known (Most popular model years are 1966 to 1968, least popular are 1969-1970).
The car in this video (1972 Buick GS) made around 190 hp due to the switch from SAE Gross to SAE Net the year this car was produced (1972). The 1970-1972 model years also had the "Gran Sport Xtreme" (GSX) package, which is a more upgraded version of the Gran Sport package with new paint jobs, even bigger engines, a more stylish interior, and was more expensive/produced in low numbers.
The Buick Skylark started in the early 1960s, but the name was first used on the Buick Roadmaster during the early 1950s under the name: "Buick Roadmaster Skylark", which was a failure due to its price and it being a step down from the Roadmaster. It was first released as a standard model in 1961 as the Buick Special Skylark, which had the 215 cubic inch (3.5 Litre) Buick V8 making 200 HP as its most powerful engine. The 1964-1967 Skylark was released with the "Gran Sport" package and had a drastic redesign/newer engines from the previous generation (1961-1963). The 1968-1972 Buick Skylark is the most known Skylark and one of the most known Buicks of all time. The car was available with a 350 Cubic Inch (5.7 Litre) V8 up to Buick's iconic 455 Cubic Inch (7.5 Litre) V8. It also had the Skylark Custom as a new trim, which had the 350 Cubic Inch V8 making 230 HP. It also had a California-exclusive car called the "Buick GS California", which had the 350 V8 as standard.
The car for 1968 was drastically redesigned for the second time from the 1961-1963 and 1964-1967 models, featuring a front end that had two enclosed headlights, an enclosed grille with a vertical-horizontal line pattern that was common on some cars back then, a front bumper which featured two vents and two turn signals, and a metal trim that would go from the windshield to the "B U I C K" badge that was on top of the front fascia of the car. The sides featured a metal trim that would go straight and then descend to the wheels along with three cosmetic vents on both sides of the car. The rear end of the car would feature rectangular three rectangular tail lights enclosed inside a much wider rectangular vent, with the third one on the farthest left/right having a square-shaped reverse light enclosed inside the third light. The Skylark Custom changed the grille to have a silver color, added a vertical line in the middle that "kind of" split it, and the Buick emblem on the right side of the enclosed grille. It changed the metal trim to go toward the rear bumper, added the "Skylark" badge and the Buick emblem next to it, and a "Skylark Custom" badge at the rear above the right taillights. The Skylark GS added the maroon-colored "GS" badge on the grille and either the "BUICK" or "GS" badge at the back.
In 1969, Buick would heavily revise the grille on not only their base models, but also their trim packages as well. The grille on the base 1969 model would feature a "four-corners" pattern with a major one in the middle supporting the Buick logo, while the Custom would only have a horizontal line that split the grille in two. The GS would do the same thing as the Custom, but add the maroon-colored "GS" badge below the horizontal line. Stage 1 and GS 400 packages would add vertical lines above and below the split line. The metal trim and the three cosmetic vents became optional for all packages and the base Skylark in '69. The rear was left unchanged except for the "B U I C K" badge above the middle section of the rear fascia or the "GS" badge above the middle end of the rear fascia.
In 1970, the front end was changed again. The enclosed headlights were located nearer to the grille, which was redesigned to have the "four corners" grille appear everywhere on the grille instead the middle. The turn signals on the right and left of the front fascia were redesigned to be wider and to be amber-colored. The front end was redesigned to remove the vents next to the license plate. The Skylark Custom never had any changes to the front of the car. The GS and GSX package, however, changed the grille to be split in two, was repainted black, and had "GS" and "GSX" badges on the right side of the right grille. The rear end only added "GS"/"GSX" badges on the right side and above the right taillight along with a spoiler. The GSX only had a new exterior paint job.
In 1971 and 1972, the grille was once again redesigned to have horizontal lines on the front bumper in two separate places as well. The front bumper's lights were repositioned to be below the headlights. The optional cosmetic vents and side trims were changed to be smaller/more compact for the 1971 model year. The GS and GSX packages rechanged the grille to have the "four corners" pattern (repainted in silver). The rear end moved the "B U I C K" / "B U I C K Custom" badges to be above the right tail light while the GS and GSX packages.

Lou I like that you not only asked the owner how long he has owned the car but how he acquired it. I wish the light had been better when you showed the interior and also the engine.. You mentioned the car had A/C and a tilt steering wheel. I think it had power windows but I'm not sure. On such a special Buick, a brand that was more upscale, it would have been great if you asked the owner what options and standard features the car had,

I owned a 1970 Buick GS Skylark 455 that I bought for only $700 back in 1979. Better hope you never have to build an engine for the thing like I did back in the early 80's. Those things are a PITA to work on. Non adjustable rocker arms, and a sucking aluminum timing chain, slash water pump, slash oil pump, slash distributor cover. I owned both a 1970 SS Chevelle 454 and my Buick GS 455 at the same time. The Chevy engine was much easier to work on than the Buick so I got rid of the Buick in 1987.

Car looks showroom fresh. These stage 1 Bucks should be equal in value to the Hemi & Boss9 Mustangs. Compression ratios were beginning to drop by 72 but still around 500ft lbs of torque, & without googling I'm guessing 365 hp?

That's one sweet ride. Looks like the poor thing was smogged to death. A quick google shows the old girl only offered 270hp - 390ft lbs. That's down from what a 455 should have had before the smog era w/ 330hp - 455ft lbs. That's very easily fixed these days though and a "mild" build could easily blow away the old numbers with little effort, so. A collectable car like this is doomed to her smog era though I'm afraid if he plans to re-sell it. Not a car to drive around for fun anyway, so I gues it doesn't matter.

The 72 power ratings were tested differently compared to the earlier models. They went with a net rating instead of gross, test procedures required all accessories intact including air cleaner. This combined with a lowered compression ratio made it look a lot worse than it was

I owned a 1972 Buick GS convertible in the seventies, great car. The 455 was a great engine to go with it. Then they replaced these with the fat, bloated '73 body and ruined it.
