  • 1970 Chevrolet Camaro RS Z28 LT1 vs 1972 Buick GS 455 Stage 1
    Two very cool cars featured today. The first car, a 1970 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 RS. Arguably, the best looking Camaro ever made. What do you think about that? Is there a year that you think looks better? It's up for debate. Any way, this one of course features the LT1 350 making a very impressive 360 horsepower. With the TH400 and 4.10 gears, it's definitely no slouch. I really like the white color. Unfortunately, the day I was filming the staging was overcast, so you can't quite see how brilliant it is. And in the other lane, a 1972 Buick GS455 Stage 1. Yes, the mandate of unleaded gas and the lower compression ratio has robbed quite a bit of power. But the 455 can still bring it! 270 horsepower, but don't forget that in 1972 "net" horsepower ratings were mandated, so the actual horsepower rating between these two cars isn't terribly different. And it's a Buick, so of course it's making some great torque... 390 lb ft, pretty impressive. I day to say that the 1972 GS455 is my favorite for the GS, but maybe I'm the minority?

    For 1955 to 1979 musclecars built in United States and Canadian assembly plants with a minimum warranty of 12 months and 12,000 miles.
    Any car running faster than 11.50 will be disqualified and will not have a qualifying time recorded.
    Any convertible running faster then 13.50 will be disqualified and will not have a qualifying time recorded.
    Casting numbers must be correct for the year and horsepower claimed including intake manifold, heads, and exhaust manifolds. Blocks do not have to be "numbers matching," but they must be the correct displacement. Overbores up to .070" are allowed. Stock cranks only.
    All Engines - 1.5 extra points allowed over advertised.
    The camshaft must be correct for the year, model, and horsepower claimed for the type of lifter (hydraulic or solid). Roller cams NOT allowed.
    The valve train must be factory stock for the year, make, and horsepower claimed.
    The ignition system must be stock, including the distributor, cap, coil, and wires. Points may be replaced with any electronic conversion that fits under the stock distributor cap.
    The carburetor must be correct for the year, make, and horsepower claimed. Jetting and metering changes are permitted. THE CHOKE ASSEMBLY MUST BE IN PLACE AND FUNCTIONAL!
    Cast-iron exhaust manifolds are mandatory and must be correct for the year, model, and horsepower claimed. Internal modifications to the exhaust manifolds are NOT allowed. Under no circumstances will headers be allowed, including those cars that came with headers delivered in the trunk. Pipes must be routed as they were originally for the year, make, model, and engine combination. Mufflers must be stock looking in design, that is, oval in shape. No glasspacks or straight pipes allowed unless installed as original equipment. Maximum muffler inlet and outlet size is 2.5 inches. X & H pipes allowed.
    The radiator must be correct for the year, make, model, and horsepower claimed. No lightweight, aluminum radiators allowed.
    Maximum stall limited to 2200 rpm.
    The transmission must be correct for year, make, model and engine of the car. 3-speed manuals may be upgraded to the correct 4-speed if originally available.
    The rear axle must be of the same manufacturer as the car. Any gear ratio is allowed.
    Reproduction tires or radial tires only.You are allowed to run tires one size over stock.
    Factory wheels only.

    For me the 69 was the nicest but all of the 60’s models were nice. I liked the 70 model but not as much as the first era of Camaro.

      Me too. I adored my 69 Camaro. I dreamed about a 69 for months after a buddy took me for a ride in his. The stirrup shifter in the console is the best ever in my opinion. I noticed the Grand Sport had a version of the shifter too. It looked pretty good, but still not as good as the Camaro version.

      67-68 was a little shorter,,
      70-81 I like to,,

      The 78 to 81 was builtfor high speed though. Remember the nascar Iroc races. back in the day. Those bodies went 200 mph and handled well too. As far as first gens go it have to be the 67. It was clean on the front and them round rear wheel wells looked sweeter with tall fat tires. Them 69 and the flat wells had to be jacked up too much imo.

      The 1969 Camaro is the best looking of all. I still have my 1969 Camaro with a 454 in it. The 1967 and 1968 Camaro's look to much alike but are still great looking muscle cars.

      jim dandy way shiny compared to the ones of the truck in 1970 the originals were acrylic lacquer no clear coat ,I worked for a gm dealer from later 1967 to 1976 in Parkhill Ontario Canada doing auto body , detailing, helping mechanics redoing engines and transmissions prepping new cars . Later i rebuilt carbs , painted cars ,undercoated did some sales . Worked there from age 13 to 21 30 to 50 hours per week while going to school and college ,it was a great addition to shop class , allowed me to drive all the gm hi Po cars of the time and the trade in Fords and Chrysler and Plymouth dodges . My boss trusted me allowed me to use his winter home in Florida every year at March break , let me drive his demo corvette and pick my girl friend up and take his boat boat out for the day and evening several times . During my employment there I bought my first car a 1968 Chevelle Malibu ss , bought new nova , and a new Monte Carlo ,owner would sell them to me at cost . My last year there i ordered a 1975 vette the price cost $5798.00 but my boss died as a result of a car accident and the new owners cancelled my order and then I quit and went to a truck shop for approx 2 years while I finished electronics at college

      @@nickking1510 Sounds like a fun time as well as some good learning opportunities, always nice to have a boss like so he must have been a nice guy and saw potential in you. I just turned 64 so I know where you're coming from, old enough to remember the 1st gas 'shortage' around 75 in the US. I feel your Buick is TRULY stock due to the REAL mph, highly modded engines and old war stories have inflated old cars performance but mid to hi 90's was average for a showroom vehicle unless something like a 427/435 Corvette. I worked at a gas station at about age 19 and seemed like everyone had a GTO, high 14's mid 90 was typical for something like that.
      I bought a 67 RS Camaro body that was formerly a BB and it had 456 12 bolt, lakewood comp. traction bars with the J hooks, guy even gave me headers so I got a good boneyard 4 speed, my buddy worked at a basic machine shop and a 427/425 from an Impala came in with a spun rod bearing, owner didn't want to repair so all I had to do was pay the disassembly bill and I owned it, that engine has 11 to 1 TRW, rect. heads. 520 solid cam, 4 bolt, 8 quart pan, after a quick hone of stock bore and valve job with a JUNK Holley 780 it ran 12.7 at 109 with some borrowed 25 inch slicks, I had a borg and beck clutch so depressing was like squatting 400 pounds but it grabbed off the line, the fastest car I ever owned and had the most street fun in, driving with those 456 gears meant stay away from the highway
      Unfortunately 1975 wasn't the best year for a Corvette especially with a auto. though the L-82 did have a bit of performance and a Vette did handle, most serious people took that engine out and built something decent 350-400 hp. I have a friend who had around a 76-78 auto and he told me a few new vehicles like Camry humbled him, its AMAZING the performance new vehicles give including gas mileage, handling and top speed but if I had the $$$$$ I sure would have a 1st Gen. Camaro with a 502 or even a 572, 5 speed, etc..

      Yeah! I love that black paint job! Funny thing, people think sunny days make for better photos. That's not true. Bright sun washes out colors and overcast gives more density to colors

      OMG I LOVE THE GS , had a friend in high school who had a PRISTINE 71 GS , had a four on the floor and man that car would move . His pops worked at the local DuPont paint jobber , so let's just say that his car got a beautiful Emron paint job for very little cash 😁 Some guys just had all the lunch I tell ya!!!

    Exactly what I would’ve expected. That crazy torquey Buick with a bunch of weight over the rear jumped out early, but got reeled in by the lighter, higher-revving LT1 Camaro. Good race. I LOVE those ‘70 split-bumper Camaros.

    I'm a Mopar guy but my favorite Camaro's are both 69's...the ZL-1 and the Z28. The 70 1/2 Z28 is a bad machine too but I like the first gen Camaro's the best and I love that high revving solid lifter 302 Chevy small block. That Buick is a really sweet ride too but the low compression 455 Stage 1 in the 71-72 sure didn't perform like the 70 Stage 1 455 did. GM first started de-tuning their engines in 71...a year before Chrysler, Ford, and AMC did. But you still gotta remember that the Buick's 270 horsepower was rated by net ratings in 1972. In reality it was the exact same engine as the 1971 455 Stage 1...just rated by a different formula. So in gross horsepower ratings it would be the same as the 71 455 Stage 1

      In 1972, all cars had to be able to run on 87 octane lead free gas. So compression ratios were dropped to 8.5 to 1 across the board. In 1973, EGR ports were cast into the cyl heads. 1974 was the last 'good' 455 ever built, the Pontiac SD455 rated at 310 net hp, but opened up exhaust, reworked ign and carb pushed that number easily above 450. These engines are as highly regarded as a late 60's HEMI 426, and just as scarce.
      By 1977, a Firebird H.O. 305/4bbl motor was rated at 155 hp, and a Corvette 350 cranked out 170 hp. A few thousand lucky Corvette buyers could get an L82 engine code 350 that churned out a dutiful 185 hp at a screaming 4200 rpm, but it was an auto only option.
      In 1978, Car and Driver staged "The Fastest new car in America" contest. The winner was a Dodge Pickup 'The Little Red Wagon'. It's 6100 lb GVWR bypassed some emission laws and it's 225 hp 360 cu in engine produced a blistering 15.7/89 mph run that left the Corvette in the dust. The Firebird "Smokey and the Bandit" and it's 4 speed 305 produced a sad 17.1/83 run that ended Burt's association with GM forever. However it's EPA rated 11/14 mpg easily beat the Dodge.
      With 6 cyl engines making 85-95 net hp, and Ford's 351 Windsor V-8 now rated at 147 (down from 266 in 1973) millions of people quit buying American cars, and Detroit's 'Glory Days' were gone forever.
      Then...one grim day, the Fuel Injected Fairy came to town. Impotent at first, she soon produced miracles. Today's American V-8's are rated from 460 to 840 hp, they all get over 20 highway mpg. They can all run on 87 Oct. (if necessary) They all are warrantied for 5 years, even 1/4 mile machines like the Demon, which I must say, is amazingly 'trick' for a Detroit stocker. :))

      @@crankychris2 ; I owned a 1970 Torino Cobra with the drag pack. My good friends and I would meet at Capitol Plaza in Prince Georges County Maryland on Wednesday nights. Before heading home, we would stop at Sunoco located in Tacoma Park. This is 1979-80 and Sunoco was still selling 101octane leaded for about a $1.40? When that was phased out, we would go to local speed shops like Malcolm Durhams in Hyattsville, Md. and buy 105oct leaded. But that was expensive @ $4.00+gal. Still good memories and good times.

      @@cobracharmer6178 1980, I was driving a modded 1970 Dodge Challenger. I had the original 383 rebuilt with 9:1 forged pistons, and W-40 heads so it could run ok on 87. I modded the suspension too, but good handling never was these car's forte. I'm a super fan of 1965-1971 Detroit muscle cars. Good times, open roads, and Fuzzbusters!

      @@crankychris2 ; Yep. They handled well enough. Some came with a heavy duty suspension including rear sway bars. But "Drag Pack" wasn't about road course racing. Today, I own a 69 Cobra fastback and a 69 Roadrunner. I'm still 17yrs old. Wait. Make that 62. :0)

    I was surprised when the Buick took the early lead against the Camaro !! I like the tach placed on the driver side hood, helps to keep yout eyes on the road !

    My teenage sons can't fathom why an orange example of a 70 RS Z28 is probably out of all the cars I've owned the one that I lament the sale of the most. They all lean toward either one of the 69-70 Corvettes or one I think may be a closet Pontiac lover because he's all about the Super Duty Trans Am.
    It's probably because I owned this particular 70 Camaro just after High School (mid eighties) and was I believe my first solid lift cam car and it's hard to forget the music that it made so probably the one I would choose with a magic time machine with a one car capacity, even though some others might be more valuable.
    Greatest car ever! I would've liked to have had the small spoiler though...

    the z28 just like the 302 boss mustang was really not designed to be a drag race engine, they were designed for trans am racing and didn't have a lot of ability to launch off the line.

      @Moon Pie Many folks actually preferred the high torque low rpm big engines. But the HO302's and 340's were much lighter and better handling than the 440/454 big blocks.

      Mike Burks the 70 should be a 360 hp solid lifter forged crank big valve heads pink gm rods forged 11 to 1 compression ratio pistons Holley 780 .Same engine as LT1in the 70 vette was rated higher 375 hp

      Never got to drive a gen 2 Camaro but I did drive a gen 2 Formula 455 Firebird back in the day. They were pretty similar chassis and while I have always preferred the appearance of the ‘68-‘69 Camaros, the gen 2 chassis cars definitely rode and handled better.

      Yeah I like the 67-69 model years best and dig the hideaway headlights on the 69 as well. But not a fan after the 1st gens, and don't care for the look much. Hideaways are cool and we're also on my first car, which was a 68 Charger

    I had a 72 full loaded stage 1 Buick sold it to a gent who gave it a full nut and bolt no expense Spared Restoration. And got to admit I was really surprised the Buick barely lost. As someone else said a 70 stage 1 VS the z28 would have been a level playing field. Or a 1972 Z28 VS the 72 GS stage 1.

    It's a shame Buick doesn't get back in the muscle car wars going on today aka.....Challenger, Mustang, Camaros, Vettes etc that would make the complete circle back from early muscle cars....js

      They don't have an engine, today they use the turbo 4 and the 3.6 V-6 from Chevy. They need something they can call a Wildcat. The GM 6.2 won't fit into any Buick. I doubt GM will let them build a V-8, because the bean counters axed the CT6's. Maybe they could use the Caddy's 400 hp V-6?

    Man I'm surprised that big block didn't walk away at the top end like it should've. It's got to be in the gearing, or the horses in the Chevy are just uber more. Love seeing these old doggies out running and romping around out there! Thanks again guys, great stuff! ▪☆☆☆▪

    Man what a difference compression ratio can make , because there was a guy in our town and his 71 GS was the fastest car in the area , which included tulare , kern ,kings and fresno counties back in I believe 1982 and 83 , nobody could beat the guy , and believe me plenty of guys came from all over and there were some that gave him some close runs , but that guy always won , I still remember his name because my friend who had a 1968 Chevelle SS with a few goodies in it couldn't ever beat ol Gerry Gerdes in his 71 GS , use to get my friend all worked up!!😁

      Out of the 5- 67-69 Camaros I have owned my first car 67 SS Camaro was my favorite of all..the rear wheel arches as you say just make them look so mean..mine did not have the original engine in it but I fixed up a nice 327 for it and it was an amazing fast car.

      The 70 Z28 with auto trans and 4.10 gear, if left in 1st would shift at 7000 rpm automatically. They had no traction problems out of the hole with the F60 15 tires. brake rev it with foot to the floor, and it would leave 5ft of rubber and just take off. The big block cars had serious traction problems and would lose every time on the street to the Z because of that. I won street races with the Z28 against 70 455 stage 1 Buicks and LS6 Chevell's and the Z was bone stock.

    Had a 67 Z-28 when I was young. The rarest of all Z-28s. Only 602 were built. The 302s we're rated at 290 h.p. but actually made close to 500 h.p. with headers!

    I like the plum crazy 70 Challenger at the first of the vid better than any of them, but would easily choose the Buick over the Camaro. Mainly because I don't care for the 70+ styling, and really like the 67-69 model years allot more then the macho look of the later design 🤮

    The 70..half is my dream ride with a 302z ..they are so lush. There was one in my neighborhood when I was very young. Nothing could touch it. It ate big block chargers up anything it would line up with. Good video. 2thumbs up

      Kyle Mortensen The LT1 was a high reviving engine. The top end is where it really shined. This GS was hamstrung by it’s mandated lower compression. It was over a full second slower than the high compression ‘70. No excuse, just fact. The LT1 was my favorite engine in the ‘70 Camaro. The best balance of high revving power and better handling.

    We had a 70 Rally Sport Camero. My dad painted it white and lowers it and put wide baby moons on it. It had the full front bumper unlike the 70 1/2 with the split front bumper. It was a cool cursing car and plenty fast.

    So I bought my 69 Z28 in early 70, of course they are actually 69 1/2's, I am cruising Harbor Boulevard one night and pull into Carl's Jr. and to my surprise there is a 70 1/2 Z28 RS, Duel Carb, Cross Ram, with the Bubble Hood, sitting there with it's hood open. It kind a took my breath away, so long and sleek, with almost no bumper hanging off the front. I fell in love for the second time! I pulled in quickly, went over and had my own little drool fest. Of course I could not speak, but I recall the owners words, "You don't want to race me". He was right, I just wanted to get closer to the car.

    We had a 70 RS Camero White lowered with the widest baby moons and tires that would fit. It was slightly lowered and looked slick. My dad painted it white, and it used to be green. It was almost my 1st car and I learned to drive in it. It drove nice, handled good, had a 350 with plenty of pep and and was just an all around good car. I like the 1969 Camero best, I just love those body lines and 69 had good power still and sweet looks. One of my all time favorite cars and I own 2 Corvettes and had a sweet 72 Challenger R/T and lots of cool cars. My dad built custom cars for years and even worked for George Barris Custom Rods and helped make the Munsters Mobile and Pink Panther Car and some others. He was a very good fiberglass guy and custom painter, my dad and George lol.

      Richard Jones - I was at a nostalgia drag race at Famoso (Bakersfield) CA about 10 years ago and noticed a plain Jane ‘69 Camaro with dog dish hubcaps in the show area. When I went to look at the car closer I was stunned to discover that it was a real 1969 ZL1 camaro. I think it was like #61 of the 69 that were made. What shocked me even more was that the owner actually drove the car there from the Bakersfield area and left it unattended in the show area.

      COPO cars could have been ordered any way, but the people buying them wanted them as light as possible. Usually, that meant manual steering, tranny, drum brakes, and no a/c. Not much fun in the real world with a 700 lb big block! Oh yeah, add the cheapest interior, radio delete, and no instrumentation except an add on tach. We all want to sell one, but few would want to drive one for long. They handled worse than they rode. They were designed only to go in a straight line for a short distance, some weren't even street legal!

    I'd love to see a heads up match with the 1970 & 1/2 Z28 350 LT1 against the 1971 Boss 351. Both have roughly the same HP figures and both are have more or less the same CiD engines.

      @@aschuppe The race would be awesome but racing such rare cars is somewhat risky. Back in the late 70s and early 80s parts for these muscle cars were everywhere in the Bargain Finder and AutoTrader. I remember seeing a 427 COPO Nova in the Saskatchewan AutoTrrader back in the late 70s but I didn't know what it was back then. Same as with a 69 and a half experimental RA V 302 Pontiac T/A down East in the Canadian Old Car AutoTrader. Didn't know what that was either as I was only in grade 9 back then. A Boss 429 as well was also selling for $5000 Canadian as well. The late 70s and early 80s was a great time to grow up since hot rodding and street racing was most teenagers weekend past time.

    Reality check: New, neither one of these cars could break 14 seconds, although Hot Rod reworked a 4 speed 360 hp Camaro's ignition and carb, swapped in a 4.10 rear end and in the May 1971 Issue recorded a 13.6@104 mph in Michigan on a 40 deg day. HR's driver was a well known retired Drag Racer. The hottest Buick in 1972 was the GS455 Stage 1. Though rated at a snarling 270 NET HP, it's 2 bolt mains and thin wall cylinder castings meant that the first WOT pull to 5800 would be it's last one. (The same was true with Chevy's 2 bolt 454) The sad reality is that a stock 8 cyl Camaro or Mustang will eat these cars for lunch. These cars are worth a fortune now, it's dumb to tear them up trying to drag race them. I owned a 1968 360 hp Stage 2 Skylark Gran Sport, even with dual sway bars, Koni Shocks and Goodyear rubber it understeered like a runaway coal barge in a 30 kt crosswind.
    Bottom line of this long winded rant? Today's cars are much faster, better handling, and more reliable than anything from yesteryear.
    Don't race them...RESTORE THEM! Imagine what these 2 cars will be worth when you guys are my age!
    The best looking muscle car ever made? Whoooo-eeey! My pick is a Screaming Yellow 1970 'Cuda AAR 340-6. Let's hear about some of yours!

    Fisher Body was the king for styling in those days. I prefer my 1968 Camaro convertible due to its smoothest lines of all first gen Camaros. No wind wing window like 1967, no box shaped wheel wells like 1969, the 1968 had a pure sexy coke bottle body style and contoured wheel wells. Much like the mid 50s Bel Airs, 55 was to plain, 57 was over the top, yet 56 was perfect. Mid years of both were the best.

    I bought mine used for 2600 dollars. Green and black z28 solid bumper but mine had the taller spoiler and 4 speed. My best time at thunder valley south dakota was 13.1. Sold it to buy a new 77 Blazer. Big mistake . Miss that car to this day.

    1970-1973 Camaro with the RS package is by far the best looking camaro. I like the 67-69, but the 1970-73 were much better looking. the second gen Camaro was also far better handling than the first gen cars. also that 350HP engine was way under rated. if i remember right Hot Rod Mag did a dyno pull on an all original LT1 and it made 425HP.

    Had to order my '73 LT Z28 RS, none were available off the lot, although plenty of base models were that year, my car had the L82 350 turbo fire V8 close ratio 4 speed and 373 rear it was a great car, fast and it handled well, I sold it to buy the '79 Corvette with L82 also but it couldn't rate with the Camaro, and there were no outward indications of my LT being Z28 equiped, still a beautiful car in gun metal silver, stripe delete

      Consider what a 'fast' car circa 1950 was. A 1951 Hudson Hornet with "Twin H Power" [2 carbs and 2 shift levers] was the first 100 mph car. A big Ford or Chevy could do about 90.

    me and my buddy both had 1970 Z/28's around 1980. mine was an automatic, his was a 4 speed with 3.73's, he ran a best of 13.99@101. I never took mine to the track.

    My favorite Camaro of all is the 69 ZL-1 of course. But the ZL-1 is really more of a race car than a streetable muscle car. If I can't have a ZL-1 I'll settle for a 69 Z28. Those Chevy 302's were screamers for small displacement V8's and I love the sound of those engines with the factory chambered exhaust. One of the best sounding cars of the muscle car era in my opinion. Plus they handled much better than big block Camaro's did though they weren't as quick off the line because they didn't have the low end torque that the big blocks did. But those first gen Z28's are probably the best all around Camaro's ever made

    Strangely enough I've owned both cars in this video except my Camaro had a 402 big block.
    Right now I still have my 1970 Trans Am.

    I loved racing the GS's with my 70 W30...our cars looked similar and both had 455's, BUT...I always won [no matter the yr GS I raced]. It was close twice, but typically I won by 3 + car lengths.

    1970 Camaro if done right is one of the best looking cars ever. Most like the 1st gen but I love the 2nd gen personally

    I love the entire 1st generation Camaro but if I had to pick the one I love the best is the 69 Z28. I have owned a few of the 1st generation and I love them all.

    Out of all the Camaro's ever built the 1969 Chevy Camaro is to this very day hands down the best looking Camaro's ever built. The 1967,1968 looked to much alike. The 1969 stands alone with it's body style.

    Nice. My favorite Camaro has always been the '70. I like the first generation cars, but the '70 was entirely new, nothing looks like it. I think its what Chevrolet wanted the Fbody to be from the start..they handle nicely, are comfortable, and available with the LT1 or 396...could be anything you wanted . Wish i saw more of them, they are a rare sight in the sea of '69 Camaros

    69 Camaro RS/SS is the sexiest car ever made. Those early second gens are nice, but they don't hold a candle to the 69 IMO.

    In high school I bought a ‘72 GS455 from the original owner. Who used to put jet fuel in it. And it had the least horsepower of the GS’s.
    The car was so bad it scratched in every gear and had so much power no one really raced me.
