This is one of my all-time favorite GM designs of all time especially from the Bill Mitchell era I think this might be my favorite Bill Mitchell design and that’s saying a lot because Bill Mitchell designed some really cool cars.. I absolutely hate it when people put the donk wheels on them as well I don’t mind if they’re lowered a little bit but it depends on the car.. but I’m not an airbag guy I got to drive a car that was on airbags and I wasn’t a fan.. It was actually a truck it still felt like you were moving or swaying rather when the car stopped it was a very unsettling feeling and I was like why does people like this.. I could go on and on and on about things that I don’t like that people spend lots of money doing it doesn’t make it any better for the car
Like aftermarket steering systems such as power steering units they change the whole column sometimes they put like a GM 1980s GM column the most hideous steering column they ever made in these older cars.. The other one is they make a brand new steering wheel column that has power steering and tilt wheel but thing is every single car I’ve probably driven 20 cars that have this power steering system in it every single one has a dead spot towards the top it sucks.. it takes up more space than the regular steering wheel so you’re robbing yourself of space with a power steering rack that doesn’t work that well.. there is nothing wrong with manual steering less to go wrong just my opinion tho

I am with you nothing more I like than seeing a all original 1960s or other era's car in beautiful condition and nothing more I can't stand than seeing a beautiful older car in great condition only to be ruined by people putting crap on the car that doesn't fit the era of the car sure they can do it they own it but in my opinion they just totally ruined the beautiful original looks of the car
I always loved the 1963 64 and 1965 Buick Riviera and still would love to have one now but it's just a dream now beyond my reach

I had a 65 Riviera for several years in the 1970s. Wonderful car to drive. Had it up to 130 mph a few times. 15 to 16 mpg on the road. Drove it from Denver to Chicago in 12.5 hours. A real eye catcher.

This car's styling design was so far ahead of its time! I remember my father's attorney friend had a black one virtually identical to this, and when he gets would come to our house in it when I was a kid, I would go out to the driveway and walk around it and drool in admiration! I thought it looked so futuristic at the time! Especially compared to my dad's Oldsmobile Delta 88!

OK people admit it. How many of you when you saw this beautiful Rivera instantly made the connection to Patrick-Swayze's character James Dalton's 1965 Buick Riviera in the movie Roadhouse? A VERY iconic automobile driven by an iconic actor. Man O man that IS one beautiful Buick.
It was that day was one of the best days me and the owner became friends got to drive two incredible cars that day 67 Gto and the Buick Rivera two totally different cars both great. =)

@@What.its.like. I recall when I bought my first car in 1970. I happened to be at the Chevy dealership when my car was delivered from the factory. It was a 1970 Chevy BelAir. On the same truck was a 1970 Buick LeSabre. The salesman remarked that there wasn’t a dimes worth of difference between the Chevy and the Buick. Except that the Buick was more expensive than the Chevy.

Buicks were cool during this time. I bought a used 70 Buick GS 350 and drove it as a family car for 10 years and absolutely loved it! I sure wish I could have restored that car like I wanted to. Hopefully someone else has.

Always liked the '63,64 &'65 Rivs ever since my kid brother Mike had a 'Corgi Toys' die cast model of one back in the sixties. Legend has it that Bill Mitchell wanted to create a car that combined the styling of a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud with that of a Ferrari. Mission Accomplished!

I always love to include this trivia for the non-Buick people out there. The SR-71 Blackbird, world's fastest plane, used twin Buick Nailhead V8s for its start cart, which fired up the Blackbirds engines. Very nice Riviera BTW.

Trivia became tribal. I remember hearing about some Detroit engines being used to start the SR71, but I had forgotten which ones. Thanks for that trivia, I’ll try to remember it. I wonder how they went about selecting which engines to use…?
I also love this car! I spent a lot of time riding in one when I was a youngster. My dad owned one, a beautiful 1965 Reviera Grand Sport black with tan interior. I remember my dad saying way back in the early seventies that this particular car was going to be a collector item. I wish this car was still in the family!

Great pick to showcase. A truly beautiful, timeless design and 65 was the best of the three years with the clamshell headlights. This and the 66 Lincoln 4 door convertible are true icons.

I first saw the 63 Riviera at the London auto show while I was stationed in England in the US Air Force. When I got home, I made up my mind to buy one. Could not afford a new one, so in 65, the local Buick dealer had a 63 on the lot and I was able to get a loan to buy it. It had the 401 cubic inch engine, 325 hp. It also had a 4 note horn, which was really loud in the tunnels of the highway in Colorado, from Golden to Central City. People who were in front of me would speed up when I used the horn while in the tunnels.

Growing up in Flint, Mi my dad worked at the Fisher Body #1 plant on S. Saginaw St. Dad worked on the large Buick line. La Sabre, Wildcat, Electra 225, and Rivera. He torch soldered the rear deck plate at the bottom of the rear window after it was welded into place. Dad worked there from 1925 to 1967 when he retired.

Have the Elecoclear rear window. I think Pontiac called it that. Defogger. 428 4 barrel. In 72, mom was looking for a car.
We looked at the Buick Skylark, Oldsmobile Cutlass S, Luxury Le Man's. I was pushing for the Pontiac. On the showroom floor. Red, black vinyl top. Bucket seats console, Rally ll wheels. Fender skirts rear. 350 Pontiac motor. It was 400 bucks less than the Cutlass S. Mom didn't like the front end on Pontiacs with the beak. We got the Cutlass. 350 rocket. Oldsmobile didn't offer a 6 in any of their cars. I heard that Oldsmobile had the best 350. I don't know. It was an excellent car! No trouble ever. It would fly. Power drum brakes
Offer Power on discs or drums. Listed for 4116.00. GM had the best A/C in any division, in my opinion. In 76, I got my first job. Neighborhood grocery store. Dad and mom helped me get my car. 1976 Grand Le Man's. A beautiful car. I paid the note 100.00 bucks a month. Console, factory 8 track. AM-FM Stereo. The A/C would blow you out. Sure, I wish I had kept it. I love Pontiacs. I hope to find a Grand Prix someday. That's when they made cars a piece of artwork.
My best to all. I have been so blessed. One last thing, I am a member of the Pontiac club. So I see so beautiful Pontiacs and stories how Pontiac was saved in the mid-50s. They made Semon E. Bunkie Knudson. The general manager of PMD. His dad was president of GM in the 30s. Pontiac was 8th in sales. They gave him 5 years to turn it around. That's when they came up Wide- Track. Bunkie had some great engineering and style people. By the early 60s, Pontiac was 3rd in sales. I know this long. I believe they made the best-looking cars of any division. Sad they went away with Oldsmobile.
LOL, my 12th grade social studies teacher was late to class most days. He’d come skulking into class about 5 minutes late with a cup of coffee. That garnered the lyrics, “Marlo doesn’t mind, if he doesn’t make the scene, he’s got a cup of coffee and he’s doing alright.” Ah, 1979!

My ultimate car. I once owned a 425 with the finned aluminum valve covers and the dual quad intake. I sold the engine and installed a 67 430 in my 65 skylark, topped with an Offenhauser dual quad manifold.
Did you like your 65 skylark? Those are cool cars I like the looks of the wildcats as will especially 66/67 wildcats but the rivera lines as so good felt like a million bucks driving this
Brings back great memories my friend had a 65 Riviera GS with the dual quads it was a beautiful car until his girlfriend threw brake fluid all over the hood but it was still a beautiful car my other friend had a 1970 GSX in. Apollo white my brother had a Buick grand national 87 and my other friend had a 1970 super bird with a 440 love the channel keep up the good work👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Previously, Buick used the "Riviera" name to describe any Buick that was a full-size hardtop...regardless if it was a Special, Century, Super, or Roadmaster.
Bill Mitchell told his designers working at General Motors that the Riviera should be a cross between a Ferrari and a Rolls Royce.
The 1963 Riviera was the first production car without framed glass in the doors.
The 1963 Riviera shared its drivetrain with other full-size Buicks...but the body, chassis, cowl, glass, etc. were all unique. In 1966, the GM E-body was used for both the new Toronado and the redesigned Riviera (with the major difference being the drivetrain...but other fixed costs in engineering could now be spread out over a greater number of vehicles).

I started joy riding in my father's '65 Riviera when I was a teenager. You put your foot in it and you could feel the rear end rise up a little as the tires squealed. That torque was unreal. He gave me the car several years later, but I just couldn't live with 8 mpg, so I gave it back to the old man after a couple of years. Love the way it rode though. Quick, powerful and comfortable.
Awesome story great memories I got to drive this one it was incredible. The owner also owns a 67 GTO and I drove the GTO first the GTO is totally different in the sense that it’s a cable versus the GS is linkage it’s a bit stiff compared to the GTO.
My G.S. got 4 mpg, didn't care, "Smiles per Gallon"😮😂❤❤❤

Had a 73 Riv GS boat tail. Loved that car! My 1967 Sport Wagon has the same aluminum brake drums (in the back... has disc brakes in the front}. Some Buick fun facts - Buick engines were the only GM motors with the oil pump outside the oil pan (they were located on the front of the motor on the passenger side) - Buick is the number one selling car right now in China. Probably is why they're still around today. Happy Thanksgiving Jay!

Yes, the Buick V8’s that succeeded the nailheads had the oil pumps at the front of the engine on the timing cover, but this ‘65 Buick Riviera had a nailhead, which had the oil pump in the oil pan …

I got to drive this fir a while lots I didn’t record owner let me shift manual and I’ll tell you it’s a whole different car when you do it so fast man I wish I would have recorded that the sound was incredible it’s a low rev engine red line is 4-4,500 rpm the engine sound at the end of the rpm range it’s a sound like no other engine
FYI: You could get the dual quad option in '65, on the Riviera - without ordering the Gran Sport package. The engine itself is called the "Super Wildcat," and was also available in '64 and '66. You could even get the "Super Wildcat" on the Electra 225, in '64, and in the "Wildcat" line from '64-'66. Now you know.

You’re right I don’t know why the grand sport didn’t make that like a exclusive thing I just automatically assumed it was exclusive but it turns out they made 454 non gran sport dual quad in the regular riviera According to this hemmings article

Some of my earliest memories of life include my dad's 65 Riviera Gran Sport, infact that car impacted my entire life, as it gave me this burning desire to work in the automotive industry... 6 decades later, now past ASE certified and retired.

Started early, started pumping gas at 15, had highschool auto shop, applied was I was learning in class to on the job, eventually busting tires oil and transmission services, made bank on inspections, I'd inspect on the island and up sell a lot, was a natural, off to UTI, came home and first job offer was selling cars, figured WTH, it's related and it's all customer service, and I'll get a tech job soon, 9.7 years later... Boom long story here, 34 years I guess it would be long... I ran into an old friend that had recently built his shop from the ground up, 3 buildings, (1 rented) on his own property very large place, 9 bays between 2 buildings, alignment rack, California Smog Certified, Tune Up, Steering, Brakes, Suspension, so spent about 20 years as a Service Writer, Service Advisor, and Service Manager. Also very fluent in Napa cataloging, as we were one of many coast to coast Napa Auto Care Center's, man I could write a book or 3 on my experiences in this industry.

Love the exhaust note. The rear door latch handles were a neat feature, but if you had a Bart Simpson in the back seat, they might have thought it would be fun to trip the latch while Mom or Dad was driving down the Interstate at 70mph. 😧 American cars were really hot in the 60's, Rivieras, Lincolns, GTOs, Road Runners, Cadillacs, Chargers, Mustangs, Camaros, Grand Prix, and even those Studebaker GT Hawks you mentioned.
I wish I would have recorded shifting both cars the sound the Buick had when under power was like nothing else.. same owner owned both this and the gto both great cars only two things I didn’t like about the Buick one it’s thirsty two the gas pedal took a bit of getting used to very stiff because of the linkage but was a blast to drive

Styling tour de force, and IMOP probably the best year and best model of Riviera ever - values seem to support that. Interestingly there's a camp that says the 66-67 were even better, but to me this is more pure sport, while the next gen was more swoop. Design language changed. A much better performer than same year T-bird, and I'm a T-bird fan. The bird did have dics, though (weighed 400 pounds more though too).
I want to compare the two one day epic comparison would be t-bird rivera gt hawk would love to do that one day
You really have had some great videos. Most impressive. This is when Riviera was a "Riviera" outside of the 1979-1985 model. This was a legendary personal luxury car that was in production for decades. They tried to recapture this car's essence in the 1995-1999 Riviera. They did not quite get there. very nice Riviera. This owner really has taken care of the car and invested in the car.

The 1965 Riviera was an awesome car. My first one was 13 years old when I got it in 1978. I've owned a total of three in my lifetime. In my opinion the 1965 Buick Riviera is the epitome of luxury musclecars.

THE most be beautiful car of the 60’s. I was at a car auction in the early 70s and a gorgeous 64 came across the block. The bidding stalled at 3,500. I COULD BUY THIS CAR! Never in a million years did I think I could afford anything at this classic car auction. I left my little brother and hurried to register as a bidder. Filling out the form, my brother found me and told me the Riv sold for $4,000. I was crushed. A couple of years later, I bought a 71 Monte Carlo which from a 3/4 view from the rear resembled the first gen Rivieras. Through the years I owned the 71,72 and in the 90s a restored 70. My one regret was missing out on that Gran Sport.

The 63 and 64s come up for sale on Facebook marketplace you can get them for like 15 grand GS that’s a totally different story those are pretty expensive 1965 is the most sought after year because of the clamshell styleheadlights so they command a higher asking price.
But if you didn’t care about the clamshell headlights you could get them between 10 and 15 grand sometimes cheaper depending on condition but I’m talking a decent car not one that needs work.. probably like middle range like a three it would be like a driver it wouldn’t be like a show winning car but you could you be surprised what comes up for sale on marketplace

My Dad and Mom ordered a '65 Riviera GS in black with every available option. It's still my favorite car. I should have bought it from Dad when he offered it to me. fuel mileage was acceptable, if I could keep my foot out of the dual quads. Man would it run!

i deff want this car in my collection. Me and my Brother are in a postion in life where we have a abilitiy to buy a handful of cars. Nothing but V8++, Diesel+ and up tho. We lovingly call it our (Last resort FOREST collection.) Currently in our roaster we Have a 2002 AWD Escalade 6.0, A 2016 Viper GTS And a overland 4x4 van project, but yes this Riviera is on our list mostly would be a "leasure vehicle" for sure until its time to upgrade to end times spec
Buicks 2 and 3-speed automatics were "Super Turbine" 300 or 400. In other brands of GM vehicles, the ST 300 was known as the Turbo HydraMatic 300 or Olds Jetaway. In other GM brands the ST400 was known as the TH400. What makes the Buick automatic transmissions "Super Turbine"? A Buick exclusive "variable pitch" stator in the torque converters. Electrically operated, the transmissions had a 2nd solenoid in the transmission in addition to the kickdown(passing gear) solenoid. There was a 3 position switch located above the gas pedal or in the throttle linkage. At idle, the stator switch was on, at part throttle and cruising, both switches were off. Under full throttle(floored), the stator and kick-down swit5ches were on. The "Super Turbine" transmissions were a Buick exclusive and not available in other GM vehicles. The "Super Turbine" 400 automatics came in Buicks from 1964-1967 and the S.T. 300 in Buicks through 1969 and the TH300 in Pontiac and olds from 1964-1969.
Buick introduced the variable pitch stators with their Dynaflow automatics in the 1950's. The last generation of Dynaflow with a variable stator was the "
Flight Pitch" Dynaflow, which incorporated 3 stators in the torque converters, each staged to operate at certain speeds. Chevrolet had a similar automatic they called the TurboGlide, an aluminum-cased automatic which externally looked the the aluminum-cased PowerGlide. PowerGlides thru 1961 were cast iron cased. Toyota copied the cast-iron PowerGlide, but made their ToyoGide smaller with an aluminum case.
Buick DynaFlows and Chevy pre-1953 PowerGlides and 1957-61 TurboGlides didn't automatically shift gears but did have 2 speeds forward. The "L"(low) or GR(grade retard) were mainly for engine braking but could also be used for a quicker take-off.

Mine wasn't a GS, it had more options, Cruise Control, Automatic Headlight Dimmer, Rear Window Defroster, and Electric Trunk Release.
Tri fives, chevelle, c10, nova, camaro, vette, all populate my favorite cars but a 65 riviera is probably the most gorgeous car ever to roll on the road. Its classy and aggressive in a perfectly balanced way

63 and 64 are very similar 65 is the only year with the clam shell lights
To me, this car is one of the 2 greatest designs of the era 1963- 1970, Jaguar XKE, Buick Riviera.
Beautiful craftsmanship & styling that doesn't exist in the generic plastic vehicles that are built today.
Totally agree 1936 packard twin six is more elegant than a new rolls Royce in my opinion

That’s crazy considering how much these cost back in the day especially when you started adding options Price tag could get up there very easily
@@What.its.like. I think they bought them used. I desperately wish I still had one of them. My dad's rusted out completely. Beautiful cars that didn't last long. The beauty of the Riv is one reason I was inspired to build my own car.
425 duel quad was available from the factory in the 1964 model as well but was not called a GS

Thank you I want to do a 66 toronado really bad I’ve never been in one super sweet body design that’s for sure bill Mitchell did a lot for GM lots of timeless designs
@@What.its.like. I owned a 65 (still do) Olds 98 with the Starfire 425 rated at 365 hp. It was a great car ride great as you had mentioned on your review of the 65 Olds and it had great power for a large semi luxury car. It would smoke the radial Michelin tires into oblivion. Very similar interior as your Starfire. Great car that I hope to get back on the road in the not too distant future. Keep up the great work and if you ever need someone to ride shotgun and talk 60’s and 70 cars let me know.
Regarding the door skin - 63-65 had the removable door skin, held in place with Tbolts and shouldered nuts. Why? Virtually none of the door working parts were servicable from the inside. Great quote from the book "the Dream Machine" "It was a foggy night in London, when the fog cleared Bill Mitchell's Rivera appeared." My father in law, had an early 63, l bought new, kept for over 40 years, all original, untill he passed. His new wife sold it. Have no idea where it ended up.

1st car was a Impala super sport. 327 engine was still a dud.
Looking for a new car i saw a 63. Fell in love & wanted it no matter what. Had more, but still consider that the best car i ever had. Cousin rebuilding & can't wait to see it on the road again.

I am the second owner bought by me 21 yrs ago from the man who special ordered it from Lou Ehlers Cadillac on Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles. I have all service records from the original owner. Always liked the '63,'64 & '65 Rivs ever since my kid brother Mike had a 'Corgi Toys' die cast model of a'63 in gold. Legend has it Bill Mitchell wanted to create a car that combined the looks of a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud with the lies of a Ferrari. Mission Accomplished IMHO!

This is easily one of the prettiest post-war American car, scratch that one the prettiest post war cars in general built. They never did truly surpass it in my opinion the 63-65 was perfection, it's almost sinister, but extremely elegant.
Totally agree top 5 best Buick’s of all time the only thing holding it back the auto transmission, but if you shift manually it will go pretty good
Had to sell mine 9 years ago. Had extra option then this one, auto headlight dimmer on the dash, reverb for the back speaker, stock air cleaner and trumpet horns. Love this car. Tattoed it coming out of my arm.

As far as I can recall Saturn cars had bolt on door skins also have worked on VW Passats with bolt on panels . I would guess there were others who did this also not a bad idea in my book .I also had a 64 and it was hard to leave a stop sign without spinning the tires . Super nice car cheers .

I don’t know of many cars that the door skin bolts on except for some Saturns. I remember growing up in the ‘60s seeing one of these cars parked on my street.
That was the first time I saw it figured it was worth pointing out
The door skin was removable so that the inner door frame could be installed on the car on the assembly line. Then the electric window could be installed in the frame and adjusted... last the door skin was installed on the completed inner

Enzo Ferrari said it was beautiful engineering.
Notice: No viable bumper bolts. Caddies, Buicks and sometimes Olds got bolt free bumpers in the early 1960's. That all ended by 1970.
If i remember correctly this car came equipped with Uniroyal tiger paws. A pre-radial steel and fiberglass tire? Also the Toronado and The El Dorado were first with power front disc brakes in 68

Honestly, there are too many things I like, pro/the clamshell hide-away headlamps may be my favorite, con/ when you take her out, you can’t park just anywhere.
there is an AMT model car kit of this out there. I have one, but i was customizing mine and was 1/2 way though building it, so i have no unboxing video to show. However, i do have a 1966 model kit i unboxed.

The intake manifold on these nailhead V8 was of semi hi rise form. You could stick your arm underneath them!

Totally agree this was and is the bankers/gentleman’s hot rod after that experience I filed that in the sixteen candle light that is a car I’d own 63-65 I dig 66-67 as well boat tails are nice as well and doesn’t have to be a GS the linkage is tight not sure if that’s the right word but gas pedal is hard to press down but when you press the pedal down it takes off because you have a single barrel carb for each cylinder with dual quad so it’s a balance thing and it’s only bad after you stop when your moving it frees up.. the owner will tell you the same thing he is really cool glad to call him a friend =)

If you’re 6 foot tall you don’t fit in it though that’s the only issue there’s more space in a cord 812
My favorite year as well! I had a 68 Riviera. 430 4 barrel. I have to say it. You missed a gizmo on the dash. This Riv, like mine, has Speed Alert. There's an indicator on the speedo that you can set to a speed. If the speedo needle touches it the thing would buz! It's designed to help you keep the speed limit.

That’s awesome I did not see it on here on this one I was in a 65 Riviera today where I saw it I have no idea how one sets it.. there might be a comparison episode coming just saying it’s probably not going to happen until December but I shot it today..
I saw it. Look at the speedo when you first do a closeup of it. It's near 70, I think...
At 20 min/47 sec there's a closeup. The green needle is actually pointing more at 80...(more my speed 😁)
If I'm not mistaken, pushing that trip meter button clears that, but if you turn it you can set the speed alert where you want it.

I drive a 1977 Buick LeSabre Sport Coupe, and it was inspired by the Riv Gran Sport. Even the body looks like a downsized Rivieria coupe from the 60s.. mine has a Rocket 350 which was stock but only offered for the Sport Coupe in 1977, mine is rebuilt with no emissions. It’s also a landau edition which was even rarer for the already rare 77 Sport Coupe. 1977 is also the only year in which they had improved performance suspension/handling and fast ratio steering. It’s also one of Bill Mitchell’s very last cars he designed.

You're wrong about not being able to order a non GS Riviera with dual quad 425. There were 454 made at the factory. I own one. For 1965 a dual quad 425 had the "LX" designation stamped into front of block as well as vin # whiich in my case matches my car. Most beautiful american car ever!
Yeah you’re right I thought the dual quad set up was an exclusive that source was wrong I did find a Hemmings article stating 454 dual quad non gran sport Riviera’s were made I just thought why would you buy the grand sport option if you could order all of that separate probably cheaper..
