On "My Car Story" we're in the Western Suburbs of Chicago IL on 10-3-22.
We're looking at a 1973 American Motors Corporation Javelin in Pewter Silver Paint. The car comes with the factory 401 CI V8 engine, and a 4 Speed manual transmission.
The car's Owner is Dale Wright. Dale’s had this car since 1988. He shares he saw a Javelin on the road driving by as a boy and told his Dad that was the car for him. In 1988 he convinced his Grandmother to loan his $1500.00 and purchased the car. He sold his other Javelin for $1500.00 and repaid his Grandmother, and this is that car. Dale’s added some AMX pieces to his AMC Javelin, factory 401 CI engine 4 Speed manual transmission car.

I just picked up a 73 401 four barrel four speed one of 1,420 made from what I understand, unfortunately it's missing the motor and transmission and I want to find a numbers matching block I don't know where to start my buddy has a 74 AMX javelin with a ton of extra parts but unfortunately no engines! I don't know what the car is worth it's in rough shape but I had to get it cuz it's worth saving! Please correct me if I'm wrong but it is 1 of 1,420 right? The VIN starts with A3M7982

That's a great car you rarely see. I like the AMC touches he did, keep it that way. That 401 sounds healthy and it's cool that it has a 4 speed too. It's nice that no animals were harmed in the making of the video on the nature channel, 😂

I get that the car as factory equipped was/is a rare bird, but IMO the owner has done such a complete job with the correct AMX stuff, I like it as is. I think (for me) I'd add power steering and brakes. It already has 'the correct number of pedals' ;) Also neat hood! I've never seen a functional cowl induction hood on an AMC. Thx for featuring that Lou!

Thank you Lou for your AMC support, you are one of a few that brings these AMC cars to light. I am an original owner of a 1973 Javelin AMX. Ordered it new in March of 1973. The color is Cordoba Brown (gold metal flake) with gold fade to black T stripe. The interior is all black vinyl. The options I ordered on the AMX are: 401 Go Pack, 4-speed manual transmission, 3.91 rear gears, all tint windows, AM FM Stereo Motorola radio, in dash map light, inside under dash hood release, front under bumper spoiler, body side scuff molding, light group, between front seat console and power steering. The only changes to the car I have made are, 1970 Rebel Machine intake manifold, a 1 in. larger front sway bar with the addition of a 1/2 in rear sway bar. The AMX now has 95,000 plus miles, the engine has not been rebuilt. The AMX stickered at $4371.90 while the go pac option cost $476.25. That makes this AMX with the go pac, only 1027 of a total 5707 AMX's built in 1973, that were ordered with the cowl induction, or roughly only 25% had it. This AMX is a great handling car with awesome accelerating. One that will stay in my family. Thank you again Lou for keeping the AMC name alive.

Two thumbs up to Dale for an excellent authentic restoration. I am the original owner of a 1972 Javelin AMX w/401, so many times these cars are restored have several wrong items, not the way they left the factory. On Dale's the radiator coolant decal is also in the correct location. Two things I notice, though minor, the wiper motor should be gold-tone, and at the bottom of the rear window there should be the AMC logo emblem. The car even has the correct Goodyear raised white letters E-60 x 15 polyglas tires which is what AMC put on the AMX from '71 to '74, today those aren't cheap to buy, everyone else goes for the cheaper Bridgestone radials.

I have watched several videos of the Alabama police car Javelins, they say they could hit 200 mph in persuit, this one is stunning, I always loved the look of the raised front wheel wells, they looked fast standing still, the attention to detail on this one is fantastic. My neighbor down the street had a short body AMX with side pipes. It was a Hunter Green if I remember correctly. That was 1972 and I was 12 then. AMC always had great muscle but everyone was either GM Ford or Chrysler. For me actually The Machine in Navy Blue was probably my favorite because it was different, and that’s the premise of owning a muscle car in the muscle car era. Great Videos, Thank You Lou!!!!

@@loucostabile No it’s the short body version with the big AMX badge on the c-pillar. It had the ram air hood instead of cowl induction. The fun was out the back door of my house and down the street was a Dodge Chrysler Plymouth and AMC dealer and across the street was a Chevy dealer. So as a little kid I could play in probably the best muscle cars that were produced. My dad knew the owners of both dealerships.

Great car. AMC did an awesome job with exterior and interior styling, and the build quality looks very good. This was my favorite paint color as well. I oftentimes wondered where AMC would have been had they continued? Don't judge me, but 18 year old me fell in love with AMC Pacer and was prepared to buy a new '75 model ...until I took it for a test drive. No sooner did I leave the dealer's lot and discovered how gutless it was, and how bad the brakes were. I ended up buying a new '75 Chevy Nova instead. This gentleman has a special car, of which must pretty rare by now. As always, thanks Lou!

Those are rather good looking cars, but one thing which always drove me crazy was the positioning of the rear wheels - I would've moved them forward a few inches to produce some more rear overhang. I love that 'satin silver' paint! Those front fender bumps are very C3 Vette-like.
And I never knew that those could be had with a cowl induction hood, let alone an active induction system!
I'd probably keep the AMX bits on the car, and just keep the Javelin pieces safe in the house/with the car. I'll bet Grandma is/would be proud to see that car today.
Can't believe those valve cover tags - I'm sure that at least some of them leaked. The "6" might've meant the sixth year of Javelin production.
Those early '70s tachometer/clock combos! I know GM had them in cars like that '73 TA you passed, and if I'm not mistaken, Chrysler put them in Barracudas and Challengers.
That buzzard didn't take his carrion luggage when he flew away from the approaching car!

Lou great job on this car. As always your video is stellar. Every part of this car is so clean. The engine bay is spotless. I was in basic training in 1970 and the Captain of our unit had an AMX. At that time the Javelin and AMX were distinct models. The AMX didn't have a back seat and was the hot rod of American Motors. It seems by 73 that there was only a Javelin with an AMX option. Either the owner didn't know that or forgot to mention that detail.
I think it's cool that the owner has the big engine, four speed, and AMX option.

Lou, one thing I left out on the AMX was the build sheet, I have looked extensively for it. The front and back seats have been removed to find it, all the carpet has been removed as well. The clock and tack have been replaced years ago and I could not find it behind the drivers dash. With a mirror and drop light I looked behind the passengers dash, still to no avail. The only two areas left as to some reports, would be above the head liner and between the gas tank and trunk floor. Since the AMX has spent little time out doors, that area above the gas tank has not been looked at without dropping the tank. The head liner was glued in, so not really wanting to disturb it at all. Other than the original window sticker, the Holy Grail of AMC's has still evaded me. Thanks again for your kind words.

Anyone you know have a borescope? Can see on top of the tank or tight spots & no need to remove the tank. Wouldnt bother with the headliner. If its not on top of the tank the sheet was probably found and removed a long time ago.
Some auto parts stores rent tools...maybe one rents those out. The lighted ones are awesome. Checked inside my gas tank, inside cylinders, shows up very clear on the screen.

There's nothing about this Javelin I don't like, even with AMX added badging added (not usually a fan but it fits on this one). He said he had a brown '73 with the smaller engine and automatic, that was the model (with the half vinyl top & rally wheels) I had access to on the used car lot around 1976-77 when I worked at my local Chrysler Plymouth dealer. I really liked it so I took it home for an overnight (I was in charge of the lot, new and used, reconditioned, new car prep, placement of vehicles, and just about everything else like parts runner and stock clerk). So glad I did, it wasn't there long once it got my detail and looked brand new (it almost was being only a few years old). Only one we ever got in the few years I worked there. Love his!
