  • Ken Ham and his team have a bi-weekly "news" show, reacting to the news stories of the day from a Christian young-earth creation perspective from the Answers in Genesis staff at his Creation Museum.
    We joined Ken Ham and Bodie Hodge as they discussed Bill Nye's new book, human genome editing, taking back the rainbow, and more discussed on the August 3 episode of Answers News.

    “Imagine a puddle waking up one morning and thinking, “This is an interesting world I find myself in, an interesting hole I find myself in, fits me rather neatly, doesn’t it? In fact it fits me staggeringly well, must have been made to have me in it!” This is such a powerful idea that as the sun rises in the sky and the air heats up and as, gradually, the puddle gets smaller and smaller, it’s still frantically hanging on to the notion that everything’s going to be alright, because this world was meant to have him in it, was built to have him in it; so the moment he disappears catches him rather by surprise. I think this may be something we need to be on the watch out for.”
    - Douglas Adams.

    In fact, the Christian proscription against suicide was enacted by the Church because clerics were killing themselves to skip life and cut ahead in the queue to Heaven... So much for Ken and Bodie's point.

    I have heard and spoken with many Christinans and their pastors about "going right now". They all say, belly's wagging and cheeks turning bright, that they are ready RIGHT NOW for his glorious return. The dying part seems less stimulating, but they all, without exception, continue to save for the future, eye the stock market warily and plan on sending their children to college (Christina of course). I feel the battle rage rising even as I type this.

    It seems like while Raymond came up with the _concept_ of the MRI scanner, it was the two others who received the prize who actually figured out how to make it practical and useful as opposed to tediously slow. One thing's for certain though, *no one* used *any* creationist ideas in the making of this thing.

    I absolutely hate it when Ken & Co ramble about atheists wouldn't need to take care of the world because it's their only life.
    Are they so self-centered? Do they even think a minute about the fact that there are children, grand-children, future generations to come which have to live in the very same world?
    If you think you're going into a better next life, good for you. Does this justify to make this "god given" world a mess where your children can't live in any more?
    It's not only their own live atheists care about but also the lives of their children.
    This arrogance of Ken Ham makes me sick.

    Fantastic episode Paul. Your description of your struggle with the abortion issue was particularly poignant. As a male I pretty much concluded a long time ago that it's a female issue and left it at that, but I always felt that I had not thought it through very well. Your thought process made sense to me. Thanks for doing this.

    • @Nocturnalux
      @Nocturnalux 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'm female, raised Catholic, and abortion was the one issue that I had a hard time coming to terms with long after I'd kick all faith aside.
      My problem was, I thought it was wrong but I am absolutely sure it's what I'd do if I became pregnant. I find the idea of my having children to be too disturbing for words but even before I was sexually active, I knew for a fact that if I ever became pregnant I'd have an abortion...even though I thought it was wrong.
      This caused quite some conflict that bordered on cognitive dissonance. I attended Catholic school and was the token atheist who had no issues slamming the church on its stance on lgbt rights, on suicide and euthanasia, etc. But when it came to abortion, I couldn't bring myself to criticize the church as it made me feel like something of a hypocrite.
      This bothered me a lot for a quite a while. Strangely enough, or not, once I did become sexually active- and highly conscious about contraception- I stopped caring. You'd think it'd be the other way around but now that it wasn't an abstract hypothetical but something that could actually happen, I realized it was entirely my decision.

    Raymond Damadian did not invent the MRI Scanner, most of his work ended up being too flawed for practical purposes but he did play a role in its development but clearly the man most responsible was Paul Lauterbur as most of Damadian's work ended up being proven not reliable in detecting cancer. There has been quite a few reviews over this although Damadian has his supporters.

    From Wikipedia:
    Raymond Vahan Damadian (born March 16, 1936) is an American physician, medical practitioner, and inventor of the first MR (Magnetic Resonance) Scanning Machine. Damadian's research into sodium and potassium in living cells led him to his first experiments with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) which caused him to first propose the MR body scanner in 1969. Damadian discovered that tumors and normal tissue can be distinguished in vivo by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) because of their prolonged relaxation times, both T1 (spin-lattice relaxation) or T2 (spin-spin relaxation). Damadian was the first to perform a full body scan of a human being in 1977 to diagnose cancer. Damadian invented an apparatus and method to use NMR safely and accurately to scan the human body, a method now well known as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

    Raymond never invented the MRI but had an experiment and an patent pending for creating datapoints using nucular magnetic frequencies (for cancer treatment)
    He never had any idea how to make it a imigeing technique usable by your run of the mill doctor. All this was work in 1977 - keep that in mind when looking up the work of the two noted sientists.
    Paul Lauterbur had the theory figured out behind the MRI(1973) (even before Damadian made his experiments 1977) and shortly after Mansfield worked out the method how to use the datapoints the MRI figures out and interprete them as imiages.
    Raymond Damadian won a court ruling because of a patent he had made earlier whichs fundamental ideas then were also used in the MRI. But his Nuclear magnetic resonance scanner was set out to detect cancer but never used due to the high failure rate.
    This court ruleing often is used by Damadian and the creationists to claim the whole idea of the MRI on him and nobody else.
    If an error is found please let me know.

    When they mention the expected value to be $150 million, I don't think they mean that to be the value of the land at the time of purchase. If so, those 800-acres would have been astronomically more expensive than what unimproved land typically goes for in Grant county.
    I think by 'expected value' they mean what it is expected to be worth *after* improvements (ie. after they build the Ark Encounter. ). They even stated earlier in the article you quoted that it was a $150 million project, which I assume is where they got the 'expected value' from.
    Here's a listing I found for unimproved property in Grant county. It's the first listing for such land that I came across and it comes out to $3500/acre, which is less than half the price/acre Ham is claiming to have paid for the 800 acres (or 700 if take out the 100 acres that was given to him).
    www.landwatch.com/Grant-County-Kentucky-Land-for-sale/pid/25057649
    If we extrapolate that out to 800 acres, it comes to $2.8 million.
    If all those numbers are right, then it would seem the question is, why'd they pay so much? Do they benefit in some way by inflating the value? Or, maybe it's just more expensive to try to put together 800 acres. Or, maybe the property was already improved in someway. Or, .... I don't know.

    You don't know a lot about Damadian, but it is absolutely right to point out that he didn't invent MRI. He developed and patented a method of nuclear magnetic resonance imaging in the mid-70s, but that method was never commercially viable, because (basically) it was the worse of the available technologies on the market, which were built based on the work of Mansfield and Lauterbur (the guys you note won the Nobel). Basically, Damadian can say, "I built the first MRI that was used to fully scan a human," but that's sort of a cheap caveat because (a) M&L didn't scan a full body until they had done a bunch of testing on animals and (b) it turned out that the technology wasn't nearly as effective as what M&L would eventually develop, and as a result was never competitive with their project. Instead, Damadian has maintained a decent business developing patents for MRI related technology largely off a ~$130m ruling against GE for patent violations. He's a smart guy, and a good and important medical engineer and intellectual property figure... but to say he "invented the MRI" is (at best) misleading. The answer to that question is either Carr (who developed two dimensional images in the 50s) or M&L (who created the technology foundational to conventional mapping techniques). Damadian has a place in telling the story, but that's a pretty significant exaggeration.

  • @birdjo6234
    @birdjo6234 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Only issue I have is, Damadian did develope the MRI, though saying he "invented" is tricky bc the science behind the MRI took a lot of research. It wasn't like someone just thought it up one night. But also, the fact that he didn't receive the Nobel isn't a matter of the Nobel people doing their homework. There was a major controversy over whether he should get the prize, and many believe the indecisiveness of the Nobel folks was why it took so long for anyone to get the prize regarding MRI science. Damadian received many other awards and honors for his work developing MRI science

    At 16 minutes and 40 seconds or so, when you said that about Christians, why would they want to spend anymore time here?
    As having been raised as a believer, and admittedly struggling with it even up to now, i will admit that is a question that has gone through my mind. You Paul you know thank you for your channel. I will not say I'm an atheist, I'm still rather uncomfortable with the idea but otherwise i will admit you think more like me than do other believers I've spoken with who don't seem to get it.

    I've had my own dealings with AiG over the years, including an impromptu debate with Ken Ham on a set of escalators in Brisbane, Australia (the ancestral home of AiG). Anyway, here is my video about how AiG pushed me over the edge.

    It doesn't say that the land at the time of purchase was 150 million dollars, but that was the "expected value" presumably after development. Since we don't know the value of the land at purchase it would be difficult to call 6 million dollars almost free.

    • @MSflyer2005
      @MSflyer2005 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, you can't sell land at a projected value. Before it was developed it was not worth 150 million dollars, it was by putting time and money into it that increased the value of the land. How much money did Hamm spend developing that land? You have to take that into account.

    • @fred_derf
      @fred_derf 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Biggie B, _"No, you can't sell land at a projected value."_
      Actually you can and it's done all the time. If I had a piece of land worth $10M that if I invested $20M in improvements to would be worth $50M, I would be able to factor that potential net increase in value into the value of the property ($20M) at sale. So I would be able to charge say $20M for the land based on it's future worth. That's standard business practice when valuing land (among other things).
      Let's say you had a computer that was broken, so it has a value of $0. But the part to fix it only costs $10, so I could take your non-functional computer, fix it and have a functional computer for $10 that's worth say $200. So are you just going to give away your computer? Or sell it for $5? Or are you going to try to get $150 for it hoping someone will buy it on the speculation that a $10 part will fix it. (assuming there is some reason why you don't buy the $10 part and fix it yourself)

    Raymond Vahan Damadian (Armenian: Ռեյմոնդ Վահան Դամադյան, born March 16, 1936) is an Armenian-American physician, medical practitioner, and inventor of the first MR (Magnetic Resonance) Scanning Machine.[1]
Damadian invented an apparatus and method to use NMR safely and accurately to scan the human body, a method now well known as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).[2]

    When I was a believer there was no right, wrong, bad or good because all I had to do was confess, pray and repent. The answer was in his fucking comment when we die it's over so we want to live as long as possible. I want to know why believers want to extend their life.

    In a secular world why would I care about slowing aging? Seriously? This is the only life I've got, if I can extend it (healthily) a few decades then that's great. In a theocratic world with everlasting perfection in heaven, why would you care about life on earth? Make your piece with god then just stop eating until you die and go to heaven.
    This darkmatter2525 video ( _If Heaven Really Existed_ ) is very apropos here: th-cam.com/video/dMaK6k4oZ20/w-d-xo.html
