Dragon Ball Z Kai is the pinnacle of all the dubs. If you're a fan of the funimation actors, then you'll see them AT THEIR BEST in this version. It's also more consistent to the manga, and that's a good thing.

The king Of noting Gohan's kai voice is more accurate, but it's annoying at the same time. He sounds like an XBOX squeaker. I like his Z voice better but the overall the kai dub is miles ahead of Z
The only Kai voices I don't like are Bulma's and Goten's. The rest are good though.

It’s 2021. I love nostalgia but going through 300 episodes is too tedious. I remember watching frieza saga when I was 10 years old in 2000 and even as a child the “pacing” was insanely slow. They dragged on fights like crazy. It frustrated me back than without me knowing better. I’m 20 episodes into Kai and it’s the best “Directors cut” I’ve ever seen

A big reason for the big amount of filler is due to them literally adapting Z when Toriyama was still writing out the Manga, so filler had to happen to give Akira time to release more chapters.

As someone who grew up watching the original dub on Toonami, I can honestly and wholeheartedly say I prefer the Kai version in its entirety. From the improved voice acting (for old and new actors alike), better pacing, better dialogue that’s more accurate to the original manga, and better soundtrack (that doesn’t constantly play in he background) there’s honestly no reason for me to go back to the original, not even for the sake of nostalgia.
I mean, you'd be missing some pretty good filler at points.

Is the music in the original FUNimation dub really better? I mean some tracks are nice like Super Vegeta, but most of it is kind of shitty generic rock or just something totally out of place that doesn't capture the mood of the scene it's used in.

+Ultimate Spoopynator See I'm kinda the opposite with Kai's music. It bores me and seems sorta unfitting for an anime as action heavy. Bruce's music hypes me up. I literally have no desire to watch some of the big scenes of the show in Kai's version because of this.

Kai is what first got me into Dragon Ball (and anime in general). I wouldn’t have watched the original anime, read the manga, or gotten into the fandom without it. Thank you Dbz Kai for introducing me to one of my favorite franchises of all time.

The biggest reason that Kai (particularly the dub) will always win for me, is the accurate dialogue. I don't mind dialogue changes too much as long as everything is at least explained properly, but in Z they would often get some important scenes wrong, such as Yamcha saying that Trunks "might not make it" when he was actually already dead, or Goku saying that he purposely didn't finish off Kid Buu so Vegeta could get a turn, when in fact he had been trying his hardest the whole time. Z definitely had it's moments and it wasn't always that bad, but for this reason and many others, I will always pick Kai when given the choice

The voices are 100x better on Kai. Frieza's, Piccolo's, and Vegeta's are probably my favorite upgrades
Frieza is the only one of those 3 that changed voice actors lol.
The one thing I really dislike is Bulma's voice in Kai. And even that I could probably get over if her dialogue was better, but I swear if she had referred to herself as a delicate flower ONE MORE TIME, then I wouldn't blame anyone for leaving her on Namek till it went boom.

There’s also the fact that the fillers in dbz that aren’t in Kai help develop the characters and arks and make them even better. Although some arks have way too many fillers
Agreed. I do understand the huge nostalgia for the Falconer score. It's good stuff and I like the more edgy, sinister vibe it can lend the show...but that's not enough alone to make me choose the original over Kai.

in the UK in 2004 there was a TV channel (can't remember it's name) that showed DBZ from episode 1 to the end of the Frieza saga and i watched most of that as a kid i think but i can't really remember much from then. Then I think it was either 2011 or 2012 when DBZ Kai started airing on Kix and at the time I was meaning to watch DBZ from start to finish but didn't know about Kai so I watched a couple of episodes on Kix and the rest online, then had to switch to DBZ for the Majin Buu arc as DB Kai wasn't even finished by then but yeah, that's how i got into it.

I like Dragonball Z because of the old script, and the intensity with the music. Everyone says Kai looks better but it looks too crisp and colorful. I like the old school look as if it was drawn on paper, and kai looks like it was retouch by computers if that makes any sense.

Thanks for this - it was a great listen! I’ve never watched all of the original DB stuff and I haven’t watched Super at all yet, so I decided to watch the whole thing all the way through. I was unsure about watching Kai - Z on Toonami is what I grew up watching. This sealed the deal for me, though. 🤘🏾🍻
Yeah seriously, I don't understand why people don't like Kai.
It's 100% in HD, it's redrawn (Certain scenes however), newly animated opening and endings, re-done voice work, to follow more closely to the manga, re-done color and shadings. And the Japanese score (If you're into that.), Plus all those songs like A Chilling Elegy, Yeah Break Care Break! Saiyan Blood, Chaser, etc.
And most importantly, no filler!
I don't watch Kai because of the new kid Gohan voice, its just terrible it ruins my whole Kai experience.

hey Geedom! love your videos and every since i watched Kai i haven't went back to DBZ because of everything you mentioned. but i wanted to ask it might sound stupid, but do you think we will have to wait to own the buu saga of kai when its completely done airing on T.V or will it come out on blu-ray right away?
I grew up watching Kai on Nicktoons in the early 2010s. Objectively, Kai has a much better dialogue, voice acting, and the original Yamamoto score was perfect. The only department that I think Z beats Kai in is with the score in some scenes.

One of my favorite soundtracks from Kai was where Goku used Kaioken x20 Kamehameha on Frieza, if i recal correctly I think the song was called "Yushi no Gaisen". The translation for english is "The Braveheart's Triumphant Return." I really love the soundtrack for some reason. And I have something to add to your reasons, during the cell saga, when Mr Satan was doing his little "show" or add, they got Team Four Star into the dub. (If you dont know them, they make funny dragon ball z redubs, please go check them out)

Started at Episode 28 because of @herms98 (Ginyu Force Arrives) and haven't stopped. The animation quality looks modern (cleaned up environmental backgrounds and fights look basically reanimated). The best part is that it gets straight to the point!

I've been watching Kai for about the last month and this video and your other Myth and Misconceptions video is what made me give it a go, and, honestly, I do not have a problem with it at all and this is coming from someone who grew up watching Dragon Ball Z.

I quite like the pacing of Kai as it keeps you excited for what is going to happen next ( like Z did the same thing but the fillers and the fights dragging on sometimes made it a bit too annoying) also I like flow of the story however the only problems with Kai are that sometimes the pace would get too fast almost like its rushing (i found the majin buu arc of kai much better and more consistent in pacing) also i was a bit upset that they didnt try to show manga type gore like the manga was way more gory than the kai and z but i do realise that Kai's airing time was the result of the cut of the gore which is a shame
Bro... Thank you. This is the type of answer I was looking for. I will watch Kai now. I always felt Z dragged alot of the episodes. It's almost awkward sometimes. Especially in the early episodes like the saiyan saga.
I used Kai as a way to introduce dbz to my niece and nephew. They just dont have the attention span to listen to unimportant drabble or pointless filler. they pretty much know everything from the saiyian saga to perfect cell. Showing them the buu ark in dbz didn't work well because they lost interest most of the time halfway through an episode because it was so drawn out. Although I may love the original, this is better for introducing people to the show and grinding through the whole thing.
The Buu arc will be on Toonami January 7 2017. Show them the Buu arc when it comes out

Thanks so much for this info since I’m a new fan. I’m finishing Dragon Ball and getting ready for Z. I decided I will stream z in its entirety and purchase Kai on Blu-Ray
You guys bring up good points, I respect kai, it has it´s ups and downs but I really enjoy a lot of things that was taken out. The only filler I really dislike is the fake Namek stuff and the garlic junior stuff. I´m sure it´s better paced but for that I´ll just read the manga. And I highly prefer Kikuchi´s music as well even though I like Yamamoto´s stuff too.
My friends got me into Dragon Ball and we watched Kai just because it was super short in comparison. We would switch back over to Z to watch the good filler episodes, and I've since seen a lot of clips of big moments from Z too. All the comments are about nostalgia, so let me give you a newcomers experience.
The Voice Acting and dialogue in Kai are a lot better, and it's paced way better, but the music is terrible and ruins the show. The intro sucks, the titles spoil what happens in every episode, the music is copy and pasted throughout the whole show, and just generic, and some of the big moments in the show had no real impact on me because of how fast it's paced, and how bad the music is. I've since seen Goku go SS, Vegeta go SS, and Gohan go SS2 clips in regular Z, and they really feel like big moments in Z, because they take their time, and Bruce Faulcnor's OST is incredible. In Kai these moments just happen, and my friend had to tell me "Gohan just went SS2" and I was like "what?".
So it's not nostalgia, Z is better in a lot of ways, but there are benefits to both. It sucks that there can't be a show with the faster pacing, and great VA of Kai, and the amazing Faulcnor OST and fun filler episodes of Z.

I watched z as a kid and Kai was a great way to rewatch it about a decade later. It looks better and is shortened, which allows you to rewatch the fun while cutting out the things that could make the original series a bit tedious sometimes. The only thing I missed was that a lot of humour and fun character moments were cut out. Kai focusses mostly on the fighting, while in the original series I loved the bits of characters hanging out together between fights, like the car driving lessons. Though I'm glad Garlic Jr was cut.

Kai was the first time I ever got to see the DBZ story outside of the games. I hated Gohan's new voice at first, but it's grown on me since then (Still miss Stephanie Nadonly). Also, I absolutely loved the soundtrack for Kai, for me it kicks the absolute shit out of Faulconer (Faulconer had some good tracks, but they didn't feel "Dragon Ball", most of it sounded like white noise to me.)
Bruce Falcouners absence is the only gripe I have with Kai, other then that it's a great upgrade.

Dragon Ball Z Kai is actually what introduced me to anime. Because of how much of it I watched, I don't watch much Z due to differences in the voice acting.
While i do think Kai has faster pacing than Z i think at points it's to fast as sometimes they seem to never give a moment of silence or a pause which cuts down a lot of the suspense that the original Z had of course Zs pacing isn't perfect either.

I'm watching Dbz Kai for the first time right now. And I really like it! The dub is definitely much better and some of the annoying fillers are gone. I don't dislike all of the filler in the original DBZ but some are a bit annoying like princess Snake on Snakeway.
The pacing is very nice to watch.Much better.

You kind of said this vaguely, but I'm going to mention these points specifically.
The Dub of Kai, not only was more faithful to the japanese script, it was just better writing than the Z dub's script. The pacing of Kai was much better than Z. In Z, shots were held too long sometimes. Kai cut out not only the bad filler, but a lot of fluff that just made the edit drag on.
The acting and voice directing across the board in Kai's Dub was much better than Z's Dub.
Has Dragon Ball Kai season 5 or even the rest of Buu Saga been released on Blu-Ray yet. I bought season 4 like 2-3 years ago. Amazon still doesn't have all of Kai. I really enjoy Kai though, but original Z will always be my favorite. Have all 9 seasons on Blu-Ray.

I grew up on the Kai version & I was hooked on that version just on the voice acting alone...the dialogue was very believable & when I switched to the funimation dub I was disappointed by the cringy voice acting & dialogue...the soundtrack was phenomenal but I prefer the Kai version

Dragonball Z Kai was my first ever introduction to the Dragonball Z series (actually it was budokai 2 but I was 5 at the time and didn't know about Dragonball at all but I do remember playing it) I still get chills down my back when I listen to the intro song so I personally love Kai however I have gone back and watched the entire series from Dragonball to Z
There's one and ONLY one reason why fans find it so difficult to enjoy the animation, editing, & voice acting improvements of Kai...no Faulconer. Seriously, that's all it would have taken to make it perfect. Dragon Ball Z is just not the same without the iconic Faulconer scores from OG Funimation Dub. For the fans who grew up watching the Funimation Dub like me, the Faulconer scores are just too iconic and nostalgic. For example, scores we all remember like: SSJ Transformation, Vegeta's theme, Vegeta - Super Saiyan, Gohan Fights Frieza, Super Buu, Pikkon's Theme, the Ginyu Force Theme, Ginyu Transformation
Look up Super Satan God's channel. You can use his work to make your ideal Kai.
Music is rather subjective, but I personally disagree, and this is from someone who also grew up watching the original Funimation dub on Toonam back in the day. Besides a handful of character themes, I found Faulconer's OST to be on the forgettable side. Most of it was just generic synthesized rock tunes that either didn't fit at all with the mood of the scenes that they were playing in or just never shuts up. The music just kept playing almost all of the time, never taking any breaks or stopping to give any sort of tension to scenes that called for it. I found the Kai OST to be better, whether it be from Yamamoto or Sumitomo, because it's more structured and fits better with what's going on screen, and each soundtrack was very memorable and rather diverse in melody. Some are purely orchestral, some have modern styles mixed into them, etc.
Sorry man but its subjective to a point. There's no denying that songs like Perfect Cell or Super Buu don't perfectly encapsulate the character. Just listen to the song Super Buu and tell me that its not the absolute perfect theme for that character. Faulconer managed to encapsulate in that song all that was maniacal, chaotic, and evil about Buu.
Aslan you also have to take into account the intended mood of the show, which is a martial arts show at heart. Falconer has some cool tracks (imperfect cell’s is my fave) but overall kikuchi’s music gives the show a classic Bruce lee film feel
I like both dubs Kai and original
I always thought Kai was like DBZ 2.0 and a MAJOR upgrade from the original series. The music, voice acting, and pacing were all a shit ton better and Kai. Sure, Bruce's score had one or two memorable tracks but in Kai ALL the tracks were memorable and I still sometimes listen to em today.
Meredith McCoy is leagues ahead of Collen Clinkenbeard as 18. I'm so glad she's back. Although I do prefer Chris over Linda as Frieza.
I'll just stick with classic DBZ or DBZ Abridged.

@@mrx-od3ji it doesn't have cut content, it only cuts stuff that isnt canon, Kai has a far better dub with more accurate lines, and not dumb shit like "mondo cool vegeta", true 4:3 aspect ratio, some remastered animation and is a better experience to watch if you're trying to learn the story.

Kai is indeed amazing. I grew up with the Latin American dub and Japanese voice over of DBZ and I was in denial with the English dub. However, Kai made me change completely on the matter. Well done, loved it.

+Tanh Van well whatever your watching, I hope it's either Kai or Z in Japanese. Z in English, well kinda ruined it. The lines are inaccurate and u won't get the full and true experience. I recommend u watch Kai in English, Z in Japanese or just read the manga. Those are my recommendations.

Likely by the time I give the full show a re watch I'll look into buying Kai while I am watching Dragon Ball.
Hopefully it will be complete by then I just finished re watching all of Dragon Ball and Z less then a year ago.

It is complete bullshit that DBZ gets some "special treatment" when it comes to dubs. It is objectively a massive butchering of the story, & beyond that, the Texas dub acting is ****ing terrible.

DBZ Kai, back in 2011 on nicktoons, was so cool, but I never knew that some versions were cut in the Nicktoons edits.
