I'm tired of people saying this. What really pisses me off is people using only pictures of the first episode to prove it's just the Orange Bricks but in a square. They say the picture is still cut off and whatever. It's not, that is literally THE ONLY EPISODE IN THE SET THAT LOOKS LIKE THAT.
Outside of the Dragon Boxes, this is BY FAR, the best release of the entire series.

It's truly a long-term developed skill which takes at least a few years but it can be done.

The practice of film restoration today is so excellent and widley done that it blows my mind how Toei or Funimation doesn't understand even the most basic elements of it. Color timing, leaving the grain, and having the correct aspect ratio is so basic. Also using an external source such as fan recorded broadcast audio that sounds 10 x better the masters they are working with now shouldn't be hard. If fans at home can sync up the audio it shouldn't be hard for companies like Toei who just had a blockbuster film in Dragonball Super Broly that made 100 million dollars, to do so. Like what the Heck....

After hearing these additional details, I emailed Funimation with a request to cancel my order and politely explained why I was no longer interested, leaving a link to this video. Thank you for making the fans aware of what we could expect from this set! If Funimation had been more forthcoming about the nature of this remaster on their website's store page, I never would have pre-ordered the set in the first place.

Something I think needs to be said is that, while the images shown have really poorly done, overzealous DNR that smears the linework and removes detail, grain removal, even DNR, isn't inherently bad. The problem., contrary to what some have said, isn't that DNR is being used at all, but that funimation is either too lazy, cheap, or incompetent to apply it in such a way that it strikes a better balance between removing grain (which, ideally, would not be there to begin with, and is just something unavoidable with how DB was made) and preserviing detail. Even Animeajay has noted that grain removal can be done well.

@@SSJ491 The blue ray US release has a green tint, probably due to a corrupted master from Toei, I suggest you to look at AnimeAjay's twitter, he extensively talks about it with many comparisons. It's unclear if the Dvd release has the same problem, since even the version they have on american legal streaming sites is tinted green.
LadyKraken This is why they should've wait until Toei Animation released the film first, and then FUNimation will remaster it from Toei to release in a later date.
AnimeAjay is right about how they weaponize their products. Because this is just Blu-ray. We still haven't heard any word on 4K or 8K quality.

If you’re thinking about 4K, and 8K releases then I don’t think you get it. DragonBall Z is an old show, it can look good on DVD, it could look great on blu-ray. But it wasn’t made in HD so you won’t see a big deference between the blu-ray and 4K. The only positive might be more episodes per disc.

Literally the same thing happened with the original Evangelion. Someone imported the Japanese blu-ray and professionally subbed it for high quality download since the US never got a proper release. Its hard to not be down with this when you have no other option besides supporting a poor release or no release at all like with Evangelion.

PLEASE create a history of home releases video. This history is so confusing to me and I want to purchase the series in some version. It would be a great help to have a video like that to explain everything.
Basically the best is the Dragon Box release but it's super expensive and not easy to find. The second best would be the level sets but only two were released and then it was canceled. The easiest to get are the blu ray set that was cropped and doesn't look the best. But it is the easiest to get along with the orange bricks which are even worse.

I think that they're jonesing to not put in the work while still getting the money, and perhaps getting more money later if/when they actually do an ultimate and definitive release later on if they don't do it now.
Speaking of grain removal, I know that Q-Tec did this well with the first 98 episodes DBZ Kai, where they captured the frames with an HD camera zoomed out so it looks as good as it is in standard definition, but there's no grain.

@@xXKillaBGXx Highly doubtful. The Season Set Blu-rays were released in the 2010s, so I'm sure that FUNimation is legally allowed to use that audio track whenever it wants.
the dragon boxes were a contracted thing between Toei and funi..they probably arent allowed to use that footage how they want.
Im scared that if I buy this they will just turn around and come out with a better release immediately, Just like when I bought the orange bricks, and the dragon boxes came out immediately after.

I get that people are talking about how the video quality is the problem, but what about the way the audio sounds? I want a new 4:3 release of DBZ with the ORIGINAL Funimation dubbed audio, since the release of the orange brick sets, the funimation audio has been re-dubbed, one prime example is the entire Garlic Jr Saga, especially the scenes with Vegeta (you can go & compare). I get you guys both said the original dub will be on the blurays but I highly doubt it will be the OG dub, I believe it will be the same dub it has always been. I want the true experience of the show as I saw it when I was a kid, it's a shame that I gotta rely on poor quality DBZ torrents from the dawn of the internet along with my DBZ VHS collection to fulfill my needs.
I think they should’ve just rereleased the Dragon Boxes except on Blu Ray and with the Trunks and Bardock specials imo

I think the best we can hope for at this point would be if someone within the Dragon Ball community makes a fan restoration project (akin to Harmy's Despecialized Editions of the original Star Wars trilogy). Since Funimation won't supply the demand for a definitive release, I say let the fans take a shot at making one. Take the Dragon Box footage, but with the picture quality of the Level sets. If Harmy can remove the CGI from the Special Editions and restore the Star Wars films to their original theatrical presentations, it's possible to do something similar to that for the Dragon Ball series.

There will be two English audio tracks for this release, depending on which version of the show you are watching.
The US Broadcast version features Mark Menza’s music for episodes 1-67 and Bruce Faulconer’s music for episodes 68 through the end of the series.
The Uncut version uses the Japanese music, though the audio is otherwise dubbed.
Kyle Bane Mark Menza didn’t compose the Saiyan-Namek Saga, Nathan Johnson did, this representative doesn’t know anything or was misinformed
So.. Basically the orange bricks again but for blu Ray. Because that's what the orange bricks had and they also had Japanese voices and music.
I'm so on the fence about this. I don't think I've seen the 4:3 aspect since the original air days on Tonami so it would be great to really see what a remastered is capable of doing with it's full work involved. I like many fans here have been in the Funimation boat of re-buying more time then I can count. This feels like just another repurchase that I'm going to end up re-buying the series eventually again..
It’s too bad that they could put out a level set esque release with less effort, especially after seeing the screenshots of their masters. If I have the money, I will probably support the upcoming Toei Blu-rays and sync some English subs myself because I still want to show support for a product that’s representative of how Dragon Ball should be watched. (Even if it doesn’t have broadcast audio but that would be a nice touch) It would be cool to see a lot of other people do that too but I understand that Japanese Blu-Rays get expensive not even taking into account import fees so people will probably end up pirating. It’s just too bad that one of Funimation’s most popular franchise gets such horrible treatment
They did complete the first box set of the Ultimate Uncuts, it was the second box set (Vegeta Saga II) that's they stopped after 2 dvds.
Cancelled my order sadly. I don’t trust Funi after the green tint with Broly. Plus the Broly preorder was supposed to come with a free Goku figure and they didn’t include it in my order. The post credits scene is also missing from the movie.

I don't think it's a matter of what fans want, I think it's a matter of Funimation not knowing or understanding what remaster means and how it's done. It's not hard to take a look at other films that do it correctly...

Idk if I would even bother buying a definitive edition blu-ray release at this point lol. I went pretty far to get every DBZ blu-ray and the cropping doesn't really bother me that much so I think I'd be fine with what I have now. I think the only way I'd be pushed to buy the series again is if this definitive release ends up being a complete full series boxset. Buying series by season can be surprisingly tiresome lol.

DRAGON how come the original Dragon Ball DVD sets (Blue Bricks) have 4:3 aspect ratio, and Dragon Ball GT DVD sets (Green Bricks) have 4:3 aspect ratio. But not Dragon Ball Z?! Dragon Ball Z wasn't 16:9 aspect ratio back then in the '80s, '90s, and the early 2000s. Because we used to have a square television (4:3 screen) back then and DBZ when it was aired at that time during their prime it was 4:3. Now we have high definition (HD) television sets in today's generation, FUNimation is releasing the 16:9 aspect ratio of Dragon Ball Z (Orange Bricks, Kai, and the Blu-ray DBZ season sets). So I was wondering what if FUNimation just listen to us and Toei can give the remasters to FUNimation. That way FUNimation can fix this problem.
timmyboy yeah, I know I love DBZ too, but come on guys, the original Dragon Ball needs spotlight as well. The Dragon Ball franchise as a whole was massively popular around the world (well except GT), not just Z. Everything became so popular thanks to the Dragon Ball manga series, and the anime series in the '80s throughout today. Like Pokémon for example, they became popular in the world, and Sailor Moon too in the '90s. Naruto, One Piece, and Bleach was popular in the 2000s decade. My Hero Academia, and Boruto became popular in today's generation because of merchandise sales. But nothing became much higher than Dragon Ball, because many people really like Dragon Ball due to its content that Toei Animation, Bandai, Toyotaro, and Akira Toriyama gave it to the fans crave for mode great things for the franchise.

@@SSJ491 THIS is what's frustrating about FUNimation. Why does Z in particular get the bad treatment, whereas Dragon Ball and GT are treated relatively well? Z is the show that FUNimation is most well-known for, so it shouldn't be taking over ten years to get a good COMPLETE release.

I'd rather shit orange bricks than get this 30th anniversary collection. The Kai blu-rays are sounding really good to me right now so I might just get those until we finally get a decent DBZ collection using the old masters without taking away the original experience and quality.

I own the blu ray set and think they are amazing quality and am I my getting this because it would look good in my shelf. I don’t think it looks bad and the cropping from what we know is not talking away any important details. And I love the art of the boxes and the the disks.
Its funny you mention buying a TOEI set from Japan. Cause thats what alot Japaness fans do. I got japanese friends that imported the funimation brick sets of BD, DBZ, movies, and GT. Cause they are cheaper then Japanese sets. One of them even thought i had to be really to own all the sets.

300+ dollers is more than my lighting PG gunpla, why would I bother when I have the dvds already? It's 2019 you think they would have the technology to properly remaster the series..... Instead short cut it by cleaning the grain and making it slightly brighter.....
Two words: ColdFusion. The whole world already knows what I'm capable of and what I have access to, if it takes the combination of 2-3 releases to make a single good edition.
No do not buy this set cause Funimation says this is 4:3 but it’s not it’s 16:9 widescreen cropped but in 4:3 but the screen is still like the Orange Bricks sets and the color and grain are messed up still

I almost order the blu ray set, as I haven't found a legal stream with the faulconer music (yeah its bad but its what I grew up with) But after hearing how bad it was going to be I passed on it. I they would just release the faulconer version for digital

Does it take getting used to the vertical black bars? Also if you stretch it to fit the screen does it really distort the image of the characters?
Proto Man to stretch the images the zoom in chopping off the top and bottom of the frame
This lead to shots with the top of people’s heads missing or there mouths missing when talking it’s distracting
Having the full image is best even if in 4:3 which yeah isn’t awesome
Especially when to change it it’s just a matter of option selection on your tv or player
The only way you could get the proper ratio’s is to reframe and reshoot the whole thing from scratch they are never going to do that even more expensive
I bought this back in 2019 and now totally regret it. I wish I had the Manga UK Season sets instead. The packaging on this 30th Anniversary set ruins the discs.
