I watched Kai from Raditz to Cell on Nicktoons, and never once saw blue Popo until I saw it running on Toonzai.

i simply don't like Bulma's new voice actor. Tiffany was a little more closer to her japanese voice. no hate to va, but simply believe that Bulma's mannerisms and personalities matches Monica's voice.
Because the Buu arc wasn't out at the time nick was running it. But you can watch it in cartoon network's toonami block saturdays night along with dragon ball super.

@@nandernugget His voice is much better and fits his personality more hes 6 thru 11 hes a kid and he sounds like one. The orginal voice was god afwul, and it sounded like a chain smoker and the acting was so bad that it was cringy.

+102 Declan Kai only removes the majority of the filler. All the dialogue was also rerecorded for Kai. It of course does not have the same soundtrack of the original dub.

Im an original fan, but there are things that Kai does that are far more superior.
For one the dialog is better written. During DBZ you could tell of lot of the dialog was not thought out and just written in to fill the lip syncing, take when Goku was about to blast Cell with the instant transmission kamaehamaeha, Piccollo in the original says "Everyone get down, get moving, take cover" but in Kai he says "A kamaehamaeha? No Goku what are you thinking?"
The voice recording is so much better, especially the echo effects. I love the deep echo sounds you hear when someone screams, it really adds to the tension and emotion especially when they power up or use a finisher. Check out DBZ Kai when Goku does the Kaioken times 20 vs Freiza, far, far superior than the original.
Finally, when Kai cuts of the music and you can only hear the struggles of the characters fighting to the death, or the anger in a characters voice, or the absolute agony in a characters suffering. That really ads to a scene. Now I love Bruce Faulcolner, and if I had to choose either Bruce Faulcolners music or Kais music I would pick Bruce any day..... But the original over does it with the Faulcolner music, it never ends. In a perfect world we would have Faulcolners music but also there would be no music at times to amplify the moment. Take when Freiza is beating and torturing Vegeta, there is no sound but Vegetas sreams of pain and the blows Freiza is dishing him, its rather chilling. But at the same time I could NOT imagine Vegeta arriving without his hells bells. So a combination would be perfect.

i like some of the tracks, but Falconer Production's music is too Generic, for the lack of a better word, Bruce and his team never really understood anything about Dragon Ball, even if you like it, declaring it superior is a lie, if it was really superior, we would see people outside of america replacing the japanese score with the Falconer score, and we see the exact opposite, in all the DBZ files i download the audio tracks are: Original- English Dub+Falconer-English Dub+Original Score and in all multilanguage dragon ball dub comparinsons, people prefer when the original score is used , let's use Castlevania 3 as an example, that game came out in Japan as Akumajou Densetsu, it had an extra sound chip build in called the VRC6 , everyone outside of Japan grew up with a version that just used the NES sound chip, and now a lot of people buy the Famicom (Japanese Version of the NES) and Akumajou Densetsu, they import that just for the sake of the extra sound chip build-in,even though they are used to the other version, wanna know why? because if something truly is superior, then people will want it, you know who likes the Falconer Score in an non-English speaking country?i don't know, it would be easier to count people who don't hate it though,it's a shame Kikuchi will never get a fair judgement from most americans,"But it is a matter of preference" no, opinion is wich one you prefer/like the most, not the superior one, the superior one is based on facts, and Bruce and his team not understanding the Dragon Ball universe and the characters is a fact, Falconer's music would only add good tracks to Dragon Ball, but it gave us more than that, it gave us a Neophobic fan base, that is not their fault but when aras said "In a perfect world Bruce Falconers soundtrack wouldn't exist" he was totally right, those Neophobic fans would not exist in a Perfect World, in a perfect world the best track would be reconized though a fair jugement,and by the way, Credit it to Falconer Productions, falconer doesn't deserve credit for most of the tracks, i like listening to the score, but it is DEFINITELY not Dragon Ball

Funny thing, I was actually “introduced” to Dragon Ball by GT.
One thing that I love about Kai is the dubbing, it's much better than the original series, much more emotion is put into the voice acting and it sounds more natural, also, there is less filler, like Geekdom said, there is still blood and strong language, it's the way the english speaking audience always wanted it but they're being too stuck up to give it a chance, an argument could be made it's better than the original, I personally won't go that far, but it is better in some aspects, although I do miss some of the filler.
That was one long sentence.

No actually, the blue Popo was only in the CW Toonzai edit of Dragon Ball Z Kai for public syndication. Dragon Ball Z Kai on Nicktoons still had Mr. Popo as being black. Everyone stated this in an earlier video in your comment section, but you still seemed to disreguard it. :/

I know this comment is 2 years old, but thought I should try to clear up any confusion for those that don't know. I believe Toei changed the name only for the English dub. So if we're talking about the English dub, then yes, its call Dragon Ball Z Kai while in Japan it's still just called Dragon Ball Kai.
The reason that I'm even in the fandom in the first place is because of kai on nicktoons.

Kai was the reason I got into DBZ. It was so beautiful looking, but epic at the same time. Whoever doesn't give Kai a chance is honestly just close-minded.

Alright, I'm just making sure - a lot of people don't know of it, and it just personally irks me when people don't.
People bash on Yamamoto (the composer of Kai's tracks) for similar reasons as well, yet often selectively seem to give Bruce a free pass.

Oh, I mostly feel the same way - while filler isn't bad, there are times where I don't feel quite as strongly. So, filler in general can be good, but it doesn't make it or break it for me. (I'm not the BIGGEST fan of Ocean dub I'll admit though.)
I still think that a perfect DBZ would be Kai's animation and voice acting, with a combination of Yamamoto's and Team Faulconer's tracks.

By "mathy", what do you mean? Funi is a little corny yes, but it was a 90's show, so understandably, it will be a bit cheesy from a modern perspective.
And yes, Chris Aryes is an excellent voice actor, especially for Frieza (no offense to Frieza's first voice actor, but she was much more suited to Yu Yu Hakusho's Genkai).
And Kai's Cell Saga felt stale because that was when they got rid of Yamamoto's tracks and started using the original Japanese Kikuchi tracks (which I and others don't like much).
If they kept Yamamoto's, then Kai's Cell Games Saga would have been MUCH better IMO.
I'm 27. Grew up with the Funimation dub. Like Kai better.
I'm 20. Grew up with Budokai &occasional reruns of DBZ. Showing it in Japanese to my little brother, as I am for Digimon & YGO. That's not because I'm a sub purist, I'm not - we watch Naruto in English, Metal Gear Solid in Japanese, & YuYu Hakusho in Spanish. Multicultural ftw.

This got a little weird.
You might have grown up with some dub and think that it's already the best show ever, but you have no idea. A lot of Americans dislike Masako Nozawa's Goku because they didn't see Dragon Ball and they grew up with the more Superman-esque version of Goku that Funimation created. His origin certainly parodies Superman, but Goku's meant to be a much more whimsical, childlike character. You'd appreciate Nozawa's subtleties a lot more had you followed her Goku since he was a child. In fact, when Toriyama first heard her Goku, he imagined her voice when continuing his manga. Similarly, if you need a wake-up call for how cringy the English voices for Vegeta are, listen to Ryō Horikawa's awesome performance. Funimation's attempts at localizing the brand are pointless because the cultures in Dragon Ball are fictionalized, to begin with. As with most Funimation dubs, almost none of the humour can survive translation without them explaining the joke to you. The dialogue is wooden, the characters are misrepresented, the scripts create a tonne of inconsistencies, and the performances are exaggerated. That's not a jab at the voice talent. They gave great performances for Funimation's dub of Dragon Ball Super: Broly. It's just that the standard for American TV dubs back then was much lower than many other forms of voice work, and I feel like people only find it acceptable because they grew up with it. Funimation's Kai dub is much more faithful to the source material, but even that is just playing catch-up to the Japanese cast. In their defence, dubs of anything never fit as well as the intended language. American audiences will rationalize that any number of awful changes in dubs are actually good just to avoid foreign languages and subtitles. So many layers are lost in translation, so do yourself a favour and get used to subtitles.
I think that people hate on Kai because they've only seen parts of the nickelodean version that was rediculously censored. The uncut is better and the best version of Kai.

I've always preferred Kai.
My reasoning is "it's basically the same show, but with less filler. Plus it sticks closer to the manga."
And since that is objectively true, that makes Kai the objectively best and definitive version of DBZ.
My issue with Kai is the music, I grew up with DBZ music done by Faulconer

Easy, easy, I'm not saying that. I have tried it, and it helped give me the push to get the blueray of DBZ(Frieza Saga to Cell Saga) from Funimation's site as well as a couple of the movies.
I don't hate Kai, on the contrary it is good, I just prefer funimations version, and the fact that the music clashes for me in Kai, imho.
It's watchable for me, but just made me want to go and get the series portion I mainly grew up with and cemented my love for DBZ.
However this was only a part of a pair of contributors to my childhood, Yu Yu Hakusho being the other.
I did give Kai a chance, it just didn't mesh well for me on a musical level. It is good it exists, just it isn't for me, I like it, but I don't love it on the same level of DBZ. Just how I feel on it.

8:13 The decision to make Popo blue was done during it's broadcast on Toonzai. It was one of the many edits done by 4Kids.
Kai on Nicktoons didn't have Blue Popo, that was a thing on CW 4Kids, as well as halos being replaced with a big dot, and the spirit bomb being called the "spirit blast"
Watched Z when it was on TV somewhat and I watched Kai when it came out and in all honesty even though I watched Z I have more of a nostalgic love for Kai and also a lot of Kai is just better in quality.
Nicktoons version was a great version. Only thing they edited out was language and extra violence. It was 4kids that added the stupid censorship. We should be grateful to Nicktoons because they helped make DBZ huge again for a new generation.
+NexGenStriker Yeah, I think the Nicktoons broadcast gets shit on too much. I mean, yeah it's clearly inferior to the uncut version, but it's what helped Dragon Ball reach new audiences (including myself) in the first place.

+bluevoid That's like saying the original DBZ dub is superior to the Kai dub. The Kai TV version is identical to the uncut, minus the swearing and excessive violence. Same with the Toonami version. It simply comes down to dub, music, and filler, and Kai wins out in everything but music.

I watched the Cell Saga on DBZ Kai recently because I didn't want to spend a whole week sitting in front of my computer.
Im sorry but the only true dub for me is the DBZ Abridged dub. That is hands down the best version of the series.
***** Its funny, it explains things really well, and yes, it can be bad ass. Plus, i love how they changed the ending of The World's Strongest and made the guy that was a brain in a jar in a robot into a nice guy who didn't want to steal anyone's bodies but he wanted a real body so instead of killing him Gohan talks to him after the battle and finds out he just wants to live again and see the beauty of the world so they wish on the dragon balls for him to have a new body.
I partially agree... TFS does the best english dub, but in my heart, the original run of the DBZ latin american dub was more faithful to the original than the Ocean or Funimation dub, and to this day, most of it still sounds glorious... but then again, I grew up with it, so I might be biased... but I agree with you in that they explain things better in abridged XD

I Started With Kai, But Prefer The Funimation Dub/Music
If I remember correctly, the Nicktoons version only censored the blood, the cursing and the frames when a punch or kick connected. The Nicktoons version still has the halos, still has references to death and doesn't call the Spirit Bomb, the Spirit Blast.

I love Kai, I like it better than the original DBZ anime in fact. It's pretty much the same as Z just with much less filler. And if you watch it dubbed the dialogue is much more faithful to the OG Japanese version than the dub of Z was. And the voice actors have improved too.

But the thing is, there is blood when goku and raditz are seen falling in the Manga. Not a huge amount, but it's there. Even when the beam is seen going through goku's back.
You can say whatever you want, but the Bruce Faulconer music truly made DBZ what it is for me. Vegeta turning Super Saiyan, The Ginyu Force theme. SS3 transformation and many more tracks. The voice changes to young Gohan is also hard to take. I wish they would have released Kai with Faulconer music. That would have been amazing.

Best thing about Kai is the music and if combined with the bruce falconer music then even better. Frieza's voice is...alright. I don't like how Chris Sabbat has done Vegeta in Kai but that is mainly because hes getting old. New Gohan is meh.

The voice acting in DBZ Kai was really good, but it's OST is no where near the level of epicness of Bruce Falconer's soundtrack.

Growing up in europe, all I heard with our dub is the original music, when I first heard Falconers I thought well its good but sounds outdated where the original isnt.
I prefer Kai's OST more than Falconer

Although Kai was superior most of the time and had a much superior opening intro, I think Adult Gohan sounded better in DBZ. DBZ also had better music but played it too often whereas Kai knew when music was not needed.
I appreciate Kai for what it is, but there's something about that original "gritty", kind of dirty look that just sets DBZ apart from almost all the other anime I've seen (which isn't much). That unique look just feels right. In Super, I can't be alone in thinking that sometimes it looks TOO cleaned up. I suppose that's the difference between digital animation and old school hand animation?
my problem with kai is I prefer some certain dialouges from the funimation dub. Though it strayed quite a bit from the manga version Goku's speech to freiza when he asked what are you had more impact for me in the original funimation dub. I also miss the BF soundtrack
How his orginal speech was trash. " Ally to good". "Nightmare to you" thats something a generic superhero would say. Goku isnt suppose to be like that he suppose to accept his Saiyan heritage. The OG dub changed it.

The only voice actor change that really bothered me was Android 18. It's too bad her va was busy while they were dubbing the episodes in kai. Glad to know she isn't permanently changed.

my biggest complaint about kai is the music, growing up and watching it on toonami the music just made it all the more amazing! like the trunks theme when he first appears and Vegeta's theme when he first goes super saiyan

Kai did some things right, and others wrong. Frieza, right. Gohan... Christ, Gohan, why.
If you pay attention to where the animation in Kai has digital coloring, you'll notice that it's mostly in shots that had bright screen flashes. This is probably because the infamous Pokemon incident caused a change in broadcast standards with regard to screen flashes.

+Josue Leyva i mean overall yes, but the original dub i think did some things better. i feel the anime should be used to improve upon the manga. for me some dialogue differences between kai and z made a big impact. for me 16s speech in z was far better then kai's version. same with goku going 20x kamahameha against frieza saying "the future of gohan, of chi-chi, not to mention the future of the entire universe. it all depends on me. and i don't care if you're a million times stronger then me, mark my words, i'm not going to let them down." is far better then the IMO shit goku said in kai. i think both dubs were amazing, but i feel both did some things better then the other. overall i think dialogue z did better then kai. kai was improved upon overall for the series.
+Nicholas Caruso to continue on this i feel gohan's scream to go ssj2 was overall better in z. his dialogue was better saying "stop it! that's enough! tell them to stop it!" this shows Gohan's rage boiling over, not him saying whatever he exactly said in kai. i think kai did a better scream right after 16 dies then z, but after gohan yells at cell an finishes his scream to transform i think z did it better as it actually lasted like 15 seconds.

8:33 I grew up with Kai on Nickelodeon and it still had Black Popo. In fact, I never heard of Blue Popo until years after Kai finished.
any true dbz fan will love kai if you give it a chance. it took me so fucking long before i finally realized just how great kai is. dialogue is FAR better in kai, which makes you realize how bad the dialogue was in dbz. besides the nostalgia factor, dbz music is the only advantage over kai. with that being said, i liked gokus "ally to good" speech way more than the kais version.

I finally got around to watching Kai, I always thought it was a lame kid friendly remake but i'm surprised how great it is and how much it follows DBZ story line. Definitely gunna watch it to the end

I watched Kai episode last night where Vegeta blew up 19 on toonami, It just didn't have the same feel to it as the original did to me, I didn't even feel nostalgic about it tbh. Then I watch the original version on youtube with Vegeta vs 19, his super saiyan transformation, the music, it was just pure awesomeness. Even the narrator was more epic back in the day. Just watch Vegetas super saiyan transformation in both versions... It ain't even close
Kai is way better than the original. I love both but Kai is more organized and original to the manga. The only set back kai has is the new music for it. When it had to Yamamoto score on the older Kai episodes it waa better but it has a different score now and the music kinda sucks.

Kai is way better.
Here in Mexico it was really a problem. First, we had the 4:3 version (and there wasn't any widescreen version). Second, almost every important voice actor (Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo, Trunks, Frieza, Cell, Kaiosama, Kamisama, Mr. Satan, Mr. Popo, Yajirobe, Roshi) left the staff, so the voices were really far away from the original and beloved characters. Third, we got Blue Popo and a lot of the english expressions that just don't feel right on a spanish translation for an anime like DBZ. And finally, the ending was cut out, and it was an amazing song...

The original in house FUNimation dub is very much a product of it's time. It was made in the days back when anime series from Japan were viewed as needing to be heavily edited and reversioned to be palatable to us Americans, and it along with other series like Sailor Moon and Pokemon were subject to those often detrimental practices. Kai on the other hand was made when the in house cast had about a decade or more of practice under their belts, we are long removed from those days.
The DBZ Kai dub is certainly far more faithful to the original Japanese version in terms of dialogue and translations, especially more so than the previous dubs from 1999-2003 and the Ultimate Uncut re dub of the first 67 episodes from 2005.
I think it's funny how LittleKuriboh was cast a Freeza FOUR MONTHS before they cast his VA for Kai and it sounds like he took inspiration from the Abridged version of the voice.
