  • A how-to guide on replacing the front stock factory 14T sprocket with the 15T sprocket from Rebel Sprockets on a 2009 Honda Rebel 250 motorcycle. Please note that although this is a 2009 model, this particular engine remains relatively unchanged from its inception in 1985

    This is probably the single most informative tutorial I've seen in at least a year. Very useful, thanks.

    Yes, I tried the new sprocket, I wasn't all that impressed with it. It made 1st gear a little taller but I saw no increase in top end speed. You should give it a try regardless of my results; many folks have been pleased. YMMV.

    Great video, very helpful. I have a 1983 CM250c belt drive that I converted to chain drive. I was concerned about how loose the front sprocket was until I saw your video and realized that's the way it's supposed to be. The looseness must have something to do with vibration harmonics that chains produce.

    I've been reading a lot of reviews on different ratio and all the math seems to point to a good avg of 15t:30t or 2:1, your thoughts? the stock is 2.357:1 and the 15t:28t gives you a 1.87:1 but that seems like it will loose too much torque. I'm new personally to this sort of mechanics, but i do understnad math fairly well. and everything seems to point to the 2:1. thoughts?

    this was a great vid! super helpful! how did it end up going for ya? was the loss in acceleration noticable and/or worth it for better control at top speed?

    If the transmission cover was over-cast a bit or misaligned, the lip will stick out too far and keep you from sliding it on.
    You can either drain the oil and pop the transmission cover, or shave down the lip to be closer to flush with the two surfaces. Then you can get it on.

    If the sprocket is very limited in space, is there no risk of it hitting the motor with the chain or causing any damage?

    What does changing the front sprocket from a 14 to a 15 do as far as performance? Less power with higher speed?

      A little more top end while sacrificing the bottom (slower take-off). Thanks for watching!

    The play in the front sprocket really threw me when I replaced it, there was significant back and forth play, but after talking to some Honda techs all of them said it was normal.

    I tried this mod on my Rebel 250 and found that I didn't like it. Sure I had a higher top end, but the bike was accelerating noticeably slower, which meant I couldn't pass other vehicles quite as well because it took longer to build up the momentum to do it in time.

    Hi, i did the 15t front sprocket on the nighthawk 250. It did make a pos difference. I may do the 30t rear and put back the 14t front and see how it is.

    8:38 YMMV. A JT sprocket has to go the other way on my bike. (raised surface facing the camera) The way you did it caused never before seen wear on the tops of my chain.

    • @zeprider
      @zeprider  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, their instructions were specific on the install. Sorry you had trouble.

    • @BigDogCountry

      Zep Rider There's always been a little wobble in the front, by design, from what I've read. That may be what the rubber dampers on the stock are for.
      Course, next oil change on my 07 is at 45,000 so, YMMV. Still can't figure what it was actually rubbing against.

    Some people claim with the 15t front you need a different chain, is it necessary?

    Dunno how ya did it. My "fixing plate" in front of the front gear WILL NOT come off, I'm damned if I know why. Tried everything. Looks like I'll have to take a cutter to it, and mar the gear.

    just waiting for my 15 t to put it on my rebel how much speed can y get with 15/30 combination .ahh by the way the rubber on the sproker is for vibration bufferring

  • @tyrssen1
    @tyrssen1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, the play in there would bother me, too; any way to take the rubber bit off the original, so it could be glued to the new one? Also: anyone know if there are larger/smaller sprocket sets (more or fewer teeth, I honestly forget just how this works) to give the Rebel a touch more speed? TY!

    • @geraldscott4302
      @geraldscott4302 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that is too much play, and would wear down the splines on the countershaft. I also found out that going one tooth larger on the sprocket actually slowed the bike down. It requires downshifting to climb slight grades without lugging the engine while the stock sprocket didn't. I think Honda got the gearing right to begin with. The Rebel engine can be run at full throttle with stock gearing for around 80,000 miles before it begins to show signs of wear. The valves begin to wear first. But at full throttle on a fairly flat level road it's doing a GPS 82 mph. And IMO if you can get 80,000 miles out of a Rebel on the highway, you got your moneys worth.
