    Hey Zep, Just a quick note to say thanks for a really great video tutorial! I just got the bike a couple months ago, I am mechanical but never did this before. The shop wanted $$$ to do it. I watched this, went to the hardware store, spent $10 on a feeler gauge and metric hex set, and 45 mins later my bike runs 100% better! It had a "ticking" noise ever since I got it that that really bugged me. I figured exhaust leak or valves, Tightened the exhaust and still had it, followed your well detailed instructions and its gone! Again, many thanks Mate!!

    Still a super helpful vid in 2019, just finished checking the valves on my 1996 Rebel with this vid’s tips. Many thanks from Australia!

    We followed the instructions in this video after our Honda Rebel was making a horrible ratling sound from the valves and it worked perfectly! Our Rebel sounds perfect now! Thanks for this brilliant video.

    I'd like to place extra emphasis on the fact that the valve cover bolts are extremely easy to strip. I always go by feel and stripped one on my nighthawk 250 at 25k miles which is the same engine as the rebel.
    Good video man this should help out plenty of new riders.

    I just bought a 2007 Rebel that had slightly under 600 miles on it. Since this is part of the 600-mile checklist, I plan on doing this tonight. (FYI: It was VERY difficult not to ride my Rebel today to allow it to cool for 24-hours)
    I just wanted to say thank you VERY much for this video. You mentioned in a comment that you like your videos to inspire confidence, and this one sure does that for me.
    The only tool I am missing, it seems, is the pizza-cutter looking thing.

    Nice Video Zep, I just bought an 07 Rebel and always been a "do it yourself er" when it comes to anything. Reading how to do it is one thing, but your video was done very well, nice and clear, and you explained it perfectly. I'm sure I could do this now but before, was a bit hesitant. Good to know you dont have to pay bike mechanics a fortune for something relatively simple. Thanks again for the video, keep em coming.

    I loved your video. The image quality is excellent, you go at just the right pace and are really precise. The best part were the bloopers at the end. At first I though you messed up with editing and had it start from the beginning again. Very funny! :) I'm glad the engine doesn't use shim/bucket kinda valves. Even though this type doesn't keep its clearance as well or the clearance is not as precise, it's easier to adjust and seems to take no time at all, especially when you have only 4 valves.

  • @geraldscott4302

    The way you hold the adjusters while tightening the lock nut is to use either use a tiny wrench designed to fit the square on top of the adjuster, or a pair of needle nose vise grips, while tightening the nut with a box end wrench. There is enough play in the threads that when you pull them tight by tightening the locknut, you may find the clearance is a bit loose. It may take 2-3 tries to get it just right.

      Zeprider Just got my bolt one quick question. The arm the bolt goes through moves up and down. Should the arm be raised to the height stopping point before gapping it?

    • @zeprider
      @zeprider  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You only need to make sure that the timing notch shows a vertical bar with a "T", th-cam.com/video/qZxB7sUG_O4/w-d-xo.html and for the second cylinder th-cam.com/video/qZxB7sUG_O4/w-d-xo.html.

    • @starcachehq
      @starcachehq 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Zeprider Yeah, I saw that. I put the notch to the rear and lined up the T for the left side and spun the notch to the front with the T for the right side. The arm the bolts run through have a little bit of play in it. Working on the right side now.

    Hey thanks! The valves on the Rebel are a no-brainer as long as you take care and work prepared. You can always count on bloopers from my vids; no production is complete without them. Thanks for watching!

    There's a funny tool Honda sells, to adjust tappets. It just holds the tappet in place, while you use a normal spanner to tighten the locknut. I wish all bikes were as simple as your 250 Honda.

    That was the Honda Rebel Maintenance/Repair Manual. Back in the early days of computers 70's-80's people were more familiar with toasters than computers. When it came time to mess with computers and pull out the manuals, they were affectionately known as toaster manuals.

    Thank you for the video. This was helpful for me as I do not have an owners manuel, and did not know the clearances. I just have a couple of questions though if ya don't mind. First; When you turn your engine clockwise, do you actually mean counter clockwise? Secondly; When changing from first to second cylinder, do you mean turn it 180 degrees and not 360? Haha, just curious.

  • @smalldog221
    @smalldog221 12 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    the larger the gap the more time the valve has to sit on the seat to transfer heat.
    Too small of a gap (out of spec) causes leaks and doesnt allow time to disipate heat which burns valves
    Too big effects timing . the range given by the factory is fine. anywhere in there is good.
    Also, use two wrenches..not a socket. thats how you hold the adjuster in place while tightening the lock nut.

    what kind of jets are you running in your carbs? I was surprised that your bike came with the single carb with the cast manifold, it's exactly like my '91 nighthawk. also I was just wondering if you were running any different sprocket sizes front and back. I was reading that someone changed to a 15t front and a 31 or 30 back and now at 8500 revs is getting about 85 mph

    Great video... but is there any chance you can put the torque of the items being taken off into your video comments? such as the valve tappet the valve cover and by chance the valve lash/adjustment? If I remember correct the valve tappet is 7 foot pounds along with the valve cover and the valve lash was 0.002 to 0.004 for each one? Sorry just trying to make it faster to see I know the process just forget the torque and last settings.

    I just bought a '90 Rebel 250. At a certain rev window the engine ticks and i think it are the valves. A quick search on the Internet reveals this is quiet normal for this type of engine. At the end of the video you let it run but i don't hear it. Any idea if it's true that it's normal for these engines?

    first of all great video however setting your valves to the high side (0.004" instead of 0.003") reduces your lift / duration instead of making it greater. If you think about it your valve now has to travel 0.004 instead of 0.003 of "slop" before it starts moving your valve. so what you would want to get that tiny bit of extra would be to go to the low side.

    In the video we see you crank the flywheel looking for the vertical bar with the "T." However, before you get to the T you pass up a vertical bar with the letter "F" and two vertical bars before that. Do you know what the two vertical bars and the Vertical bar with the letter F are? I was thinking it was a way to let you know when the other piston was at top dead center?

    Just looked @ a 2009 and considering buying for a cheap quickie ride back & forth to town (15 miles). QUICK QUESTIONS:
    a) At what millage intervals are the valve adjustments required BY THE BOOK?
    b) At what mileage are the valve adjustments ACTUALLY REQUIRED?
    Many know that have owned many bikes that some models can actually go longer without adjustments, I was just wondering what may be the rule with this bike AND for me to ask the current owner before or if I buy, the bike I'm looking at has a little less than 5000 miles on it, thus HOW many adjustments should of already been done if any?

    Absolutely but only a small amount of ticking. The ticking should be mixed in with the rest of the engine sounds. If you're just sitting there idle you should be able to hear it but it's really nothing to be concerned about. If that sounds more like a tapping above all other sounds then you may want to have it looked at.

    I couldn't really see the torque wrench you were using but if it was the typical beam style torque wrench used on cars it's not really designed to measure low torque settings like 7 ft lbs. You would be better off using a smaller torque wrench with inch pound graduations and set your torque to 84" lbs which is equivalent to 7 foot lbs.

As long as you don't see any oil leaks, you should be good to go. One more thing, make very certain your tires are not dry rotted. Hell I'd go as far as to change them anyway. Visit www.hondarebelforum.com for advise on tire selection. Good luck and enjoy your new ride.

    What would have happened if you adjusted the first cylinder but left the second cylinder at .003?

      Hard to say. I've never considered doing that. Logic dictates that you want factory specs at all times. Though if you like to tinker you may be able to improve or worsen any conditions. Good luck.

      I'm buying a Rebel 250 for a trip from California to Tulsa. Not an ideal bike but within my living means. I wanted to make sure it was in good shape for such a long haul.

      As it says in a reply below, there is so much going on during a shoot. You spotted it, checked yourself, and persevered. Awesome! Thanks for watching!

    I put a new video after the adjustment. I read some articles that rebels are known for the "sewing machine" sound. If anyone on here or you could let me know if it's "normal" or if I did something wrong.

      Sorry for the late reply. Yes, sewing machine is exactly what it sounds like.

    You know you can also shut off the petcock and start/run the bike until it dies. That should clean the fuel out of the line, and the bowl if you're doing carb work.
