    Wow, this whisky! I just picked up a miniature set (as I'm new to whisky) and this laphroaig lore was among them. The palette for me is very medicinal, but the aftertaste is smokiness and wet wood, as though I've just finished smoking a cigarette. Surprisingly though the alcohol isn't overpowering even at 48%, as the flavours are so pronounced. A very challenging whisky for the beginner but wow is it worth trying for the experience!

    My first thought was that Laphroaig is using the No Age Statement trend for all the normal reasons and this could be considered more of a marketing concept, but based upon the original taste that as you show is enjoyable and unique, they seem to have created a success, a worthwhile addition to their product line.
    I think it's noteworthy that as you were obviously enjoying this Dram, from my point of view you seemed intent on finishing this Dram on camera, not just with two tastes, but emptying the glass with some gusto. This to me seems like high praise, an indication of a very enjoyable Scotch Whisky.
    Thanks for this review.

      It's 65% 15 year old Laphroaig, and even incudes some 21 year old. The youngest whisky that goes into it is 7 or 8.
      The NAS makes perfect sense for this. Giving it a 7 year age statement wouldn't be doing it justice.

    Non chill filtered. Do they all so state on the label natural color???

    • @foxhound5702
      @foxhound5702 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +koeliejoelie2 Alot of the time it will state on the label if its un-chill filtered as well as being natural color but it depends on the distillery.

    • @koeliejoelie2
      @koeliejoelie2 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +HillaToppa 90'z If they don't state on the label natural color, then it's artificial colored in my opinion. Why bother to say 'non chill filtered ' and don't mention natural color? It's a marketing trick !
      We read 'non chill filtered' And we automatically presume it's also natural color.

    • @foxhound5702
      @foxhound5702 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      koeliejoelie2 For me personally I don't mind if a whisky is artificially colored if it's non-chill filtered because coloring makes no difference taste wise, but whether it is chill filtered or non chill filtered can make a huge difference in taste... plus when a whisky is colored it adds to its visual appeal and makes it look more inviting (i know its a marketing gimmick) but yeah if the whisky is non-chill filtered i dont mind the fact that its colored

    • @koeliejoelie2
      @koeliejoelie2 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +HillaToppa 90'z I think you are absolutely right when it comes to tasting and smelling E150 !
      But I recommend to take a look at a video here on whisky.com were Horst has Taken an experiment on chill filtration. The results were surprising!
      I have more trouble with coloring because I thing whisky should be a natural and artisan product. With no additions . So you can judge if it's sherry , bourbon cask 1st or refill. It tells something what to expect and it's for me a part of understanding and learning how taste and smell develop.
      But then again that's my opinion and I do respect your opinion. There is no wrong or right I guess. All personal preference .

    I think it is partly the fault of the Scotch Whisky assoc that NAS Whiskies are becoming more prevalent. If the companies were allowed to be more transparent (like Compass Box was trying to be), then you might be able to compare Whiskies more readily. Like somebody already said, if they had to put an age statement on this, it would be 7 yrs...but if they could list all the ages and percentages in it ( apparently there is 21yr old in it ), it would be easier for consumers to decide what they want to buy...but, why would you pay more for a 7yr old than a 10? It might only be 5% Whisky which is less than 10 years old...but they still have to call it 7.

    • @Malt454
      @Malt454 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why talk about age at all when you can pretend your hands are tied by regulations you don't want to change anyway, and you can then get away with an NAS label and some bullshit about "flexibility"? The real reason for NAS is that too many people are simply too stupid to know that age mattering to whisky character isn't, and can't be, dependent upon a producer's bottom line or their resulting label choice.

    • @yujiahuo8442
      @yujiahuo8442 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ignore the age of whisky, just try it, you like it or dislike it depends on your taste.

    • @andrewescocia2707
      @andrewescocia2707 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      can be hard to get a taste of some high value bottles, i agree with you sentiment but in practice it's not an option for many of us. we need to gamble a little when we buy a bottle and an age statement gives a feeling of security

  • @naturalfinish
    @naturalfinish 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My sense on NAS is cask availablity at distilleries, I.e. macallan is a prime offender, they are low on 12, so now they put out Amber and Gold, etc.....HOWEVER, note that not all NAS expressions are "cheap", while their Laphroiag Lore may contain

    • @andrewescocia2707

    Lore as in folklore. Horst, it's "reminds me", not "remembers me" :) Sorry for the lecture, I do not mean to be patronizing, simply pointing that one out. Being a teacher in English has warped my psyche a bit. As far as the particular expression, I smell a contemporary marketing going berserk. Basically, the next Triple Wood, no matter what they say. Yet, twice the price...

    • @TheOriginalRaster
      @TheOriginalRaster 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Danevv I give you credit for apologizing to Horst before pointing out the correct English... when I listen to Horst though I always feel an appreciation for what it would be like to make videos and put them on the Internet where one is speaking a second language. Let me exaggerate to make my point... imagine me learning Korean, then making Whisky tasting videos in Korean for a Korean audience... That kind of thing is beyond my ability.
      I wonder... perhaps Horst has been speaking English since a young age. It's hard for me to imagine someone taking English in High School as a second language, or in College and then being able to speak on camera this well.
      Your thoughts?

    • @Danevv
      @Danevv 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am certain Horst didn't have much of an exposure to English at an early age, and I, without a doubt, cherish his dilligence and perseverance when it comes to bringing out his (and his son, too) reviews in English. It is commendable by all means. What is more, I have to admit I was more than pleased to find out that he had gone to such lengths as to start an English version of his original German podcast. And he is quickly improving by all means. Let me reiterate, I dare not think of sounding one bit condescending in pointing out his linguistic shortcomings. Hopefully, you are not offended by my earlier comment, either.

    it is a NAS; therefore, I don't know what I am paying for. It is smoke and mirrors whisky. It is a scam. The only whisky that has the respect of my hard earned money is whisky with age statements, non chill filtered, and natural colour. Take care. bye bye.

    • @CFrederick92
      @CFrederick92 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If you truly believe that every whisky must have an age statement, here is one for you.
      200 years of tradition went into this bottle. 200 years of the same process being taught to the future of the distillery.
      Two hundred years of men and women learning to make and love a spirit that defines their home.
      I'm sorry if because they didn't slap a number on the label you'll be missing out.

    • @user-hb1ve6mc6f
      @user-hb1ve6mc6f 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      they also produced the Laphroaig 15 to honour their 200th anniversary. I understand that NAS is a survival reaction to the current shortage of aged stock.

    • @jeremyh4710
      @jeremyh4710 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      If it had a 7 on the front of the bottle would you buy it then? If it had a 21 on the bottle would you buy it? Cause thats the range of age. Age statements dont matter. Is the whisky good? Is it worth the price? Yes or no.

    • @user-hb1ve6mc6f
      @user-hb1ve6mc6f 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      whisky, transparency, maturation and money ... you don't seem to mind placing your money on a price tag and a name without an age statement. I prefer to spend my money on a whisky with an age statement.

      I think it's foolish to blindly boycott a good whisky just because there isn't an age statement.
