    I didn't ease into heavily peated whisky, I started with it, and Laphroaig Quarter Cask was the first whisky that I absolutely fell in love with.

    Its 6-11 years in Bourboncasks with at least 9 months quartercasks.... You can taste there is some maturation there, but still a peaty freshness from a young smoky Islay. In my opinion the best of the Laphroaig range. Where did I get the age? From Laphroaigs master blender in Laphroaig live from Islay 2008 on youtube.

    It's interesting to note but with maturation, the peat begins to suppress itself. You see it with the 18 year old, the peat is less intense but the spirit is more complex and cask driven. By speeding up maturation with the quarter cask we have seen the effects on the peat but more excitingly the spirit. Beautiful whisky.

    This video was really interesting about how different barrels and volume / surface affect the aging of a whiskey. I think I understand part of the process, but there are so many factors that affect the outcome. It is interesting how you can balance time / area / volume in barrels and get such different results on the end product. From what I have heard, two different barrels can be completely different, even if they have been stored under the same conditions. Then it is up to the master blender to combine the contents of the different dishes so that a continuous taste reaches the end user.

    No notes of: A notion of salt ? Ham? I am more of a sherry driven guy lately, however I have been meaning to pick up a Laphroaig, to get a more pure play on peat, but I am still tossed up on which one to go with. I like almost all the Laphroaigs I have tasted so it will be hard to go wrong. Perhaps a flight at my local scotch specialist of 10, 15, QC, and PX finish is in order to make a decision. Great video, as always. Thank you. PS: I know you want us to chat on the forum but I do prefer to discuss here instead as it is more convenient, hopefully you get back to me here.

    I am revisiting this. It seems to change a lot between fresh out of the bottle and halfway down. I shared a lot with my coworkers. (Interesting times). I do remember liking the triple wood, but I have to revisit both that and the 10. Even though there is no age statement, which kind of sucks, transparency, this has a lot of depth.

    This was my introduction to Islay/peated/smokey whisky. It felt like sticking my face in a bonfire while eating the contents of a medicine cabinet. After a year or so, I started tasting the sweetness in it and now I like some peat, like Talisker and Highland Park.

      Francis Ducharme Actually this is my second. First I tried the lagavulin 16 twice at work. It was really a lot for a whisky newbie. Recently I bought this as my first proper own bottle and I have to say it's way more pleasant. I found the smokiness of the lagavulin a bit overpowering, but this is a very nice one

      Bit late but starting with speyside peated malts is a great way to be instruduced to peats, despite being from Islay and starting with Ardbeg I understand why people are quickly turned away, which they can often miss out on. I disliked sherry cask whisky early on, and it has really made me miss out a lot of quality whiskies to this day. Diving in at the deep end doesn't always work folks

    Are you sure about the coloring? I don't think they add coloring to Quarter Cask, and I suspect they don't need to since the samller cask provides a greater surface area for whisky contact.

    My "unofficial" comment is that this is one of the greatest whisky's for both its distinctive and satisfying taste/flavour and value for money.
    It is a true connoisseurs whiskey that you must smell and taste slowly. Do not form a judgment after a single sitting. Come back to it a day to a week later and try it again. It is a brilliant whisky which will lure you and seduce you, if you give it have a chance.

      @redechelon37 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Who's they? Are you talking about traditional quarter casks or specifically what Laphroaig is using? I'd like to see this great research of yours. I've researched a bit myself and can't find a definitive answer. In tasting videos with Laphroaig employees, they mention ex-bourbon casks multiple times for the larger size, and mention nothing of sherry for the quarters. Horst and his son have personally toured these distilleries themselves, so I think I'll take their word over yours unless you can support your claim.
