I wonder if they are saving some of the 50 yo casks in reserve for a 100 yo bottling in 2065. The grandkids would be most appreciative! Great review, Horst!
@@CeRockTV What controls ABV? Sometimes I'll see 30+ year old cask strength bottles with 70's or 80's distillate that's over 50%, which seems quite high for that age, while other cask strengths come in at low-mid-40%. Is it random how fast the ABV drops or is there some science behind it?
@@southport65 its both. Science part: alcohol evaporates faster than water in cool climates like scotland. Therefore the proof will always be decreasing. Also, as horst mentioned, casks get leaky over time as they dry out due to the liquid level dropping. Random part: every cask is different. Different area of the warehouse means different temperature, different air movement around the cask, different oak staves, different quality of construction in terms of watertightness, and the list goes on and on. Moreover, when casks get this old, sometimes they will be combined together to continue aging so that the level doesn't get too low and completely evaporate. So rule of thumb is 1-2% a year but that could easily be only 0.25% the first year when the barrel if full and 5% in year 50 when its almost empty.
“Second verse, same as the first” - lyric from 1964-5 hit song by British Band Herman’s Hermits; song - “I’m Henry the Eighth”. Peter Noone, singer, tosses this out seemingly ad lib between first & second verse. Great reference, Horst.
This was a great review. I appreciate that I'll likely never get to taste a 50 year old Glenfarclas, and I am really curious about the older highly appreciated Scotch, so this lets me understand what it would be like. Thanks.
And Glenfarcles is certainly one of the cheapest brands of very old Whiskys. A 50 year old Glenfarclas costs €3,000 but a 50 year old Glenfiddich costs 4 to 5 times as much.
My father had a whiskey taste thing at his office. He brought home a bottle from 1961 with enough left for 1 full whiskey glass. I was shocked when I saw the online price of €3500
Appearances Horst, appearances. I have seen you truly enjoy less aged spirits. Thanks Horst, I won't be having any worry about dropping two grand on this once a lifetime bottling.
+wesleytaylorviadomus I wouldnt recommend it for this price (100 dollars, really?). The 17 year old is only about 60 € in germany. The 12 year old is really a entry level bottling. Some say, Glenfarclas starts with the 15 year old (about 50€ here).
I refuse to pay more than $80 for a bottle of whiskey, ever. And even then, I rarely pay more than $40. But I'm not trying to be a hater; If you can afford a bottle of this and still pay the mortgage, then good for you!
Seems to me that if you buy whisky with no intention of opening/drinking it...you're just paying for a glass bottle and a label. $4000 is a lot for a bottle.
does anybody use parafilm to preserve these kind of expensive whiskies for investment/ longer period of time? And..how can you stare at this bottle for 10+ years and resist to uncork the bottle? *plop
I know it's a bit late but you can buy a 50mL bottle of 40 yr for £60 on thewhiskyexchange.com if you really want to try it without killing your bank account.
+paris france I dont know for sure. He has tasted some Glen Grants and Strathislas which were about 50 years as well (from the 1950s, 1960s) for example.
Also, bigger casks give less taste. It is all about how much of the total volume is touching the cask. Increasing the cask size, increases the area increases linearly, whilst the volume is increasing exponentially. So there would be less cm^2 of "touching" per liter
@@timmydecraen7258 yep the whisky could be technically older that way but actually less matured. Isn't there some kind of regulation about max cask size anyway? I'd be surprised if it weren't
Tha big dady's buying alcohol for a 2k eur to feel the taste of chocolate, toffies and dark fruits))) I'll agree with the idea the stuff like that were create for the peolple like this man, because the rest simply can not appreciate it)
why not open a bottle like this bro look i always learnd you cant take youre money whith you afther youre dead look if you love whisky and you are around 65 years old you can pay it why not just do it afther youre dead people are going to make problems about youre money my point of vieuw is make sure there is nothing left vor them enjoi your hard earned money i hope i can buy this one when i am old 🥰 i am going to buy the 40 year old this year lucky that one wil cost only around 1000 euro even up to 1200 euro bud the 50 year old is to expensive vor me now sadly becouse that bottle wil cost me 4800 euro thats to mutch now 😩😩😩😩😩
horst ballin out with his yacht club sweater and glenfarclas 10/10
And he quotes Patrick Swayze at the end. I mean, what more could you want from the guy 🤣
I really appreciate the way the “mini green screen” is leveled perfectly. My OCD thanks you Herr Lüning.

The abv would drop below 40% abv, so by current regulations they wouldnt be able to sell it as a whisky anymore.

That's interesting - I knew it from the Ramones' "Jackie is a Punk" - they must have been quoting Herman's Hermits
just bought a bottle online. cant wait to mix it with my diet coke :-)
Dave Dunne don't forget ice and a lemon wedge
The Beast of No Nation oh now you're talking. Thats how all whisky should be had lol
Add some Baileys
And how much was that?!
Lol! That was hilarious
Thanks for the great review Horst. Would love to get my hands on this Glenfarclas.

Thanks.
2000 EUROS!!!
My god. Even NBA All stars and Rappers dont go as hard as Horst. Lol.
It really is cheap for a 50 year old Whisky, Highland Park's 50 year old cost 18,000 pounds.
Prices have increased since 2016. You will have to pay more than 3000 euros for such a bottle now.

@@MarkusDuesseldorf Glenfarclas is Just Flexing with the low cost for aged scotches. 21 year old costs around 60 bucks. Insane conpared to others
The other day I saw a bottle for 5,600 USD
I envy you getting to try this. Really high end stuff. I am satisfied sitting here with my laphroaig 10 though so it's all good.
My favorite whiskey! Character.
LOL, random 80's movie reference for the win! Thanks Horst, you guys are great.
Very nice review. Obviously it's very expensive and exclusive bottle, but very much cheaper near the other 50 Y bottles.
Really enjoy your channel 🇮🇪

I love how the label makes it look like some bottom shelf rotgut from Wal-Mart.
You dont drink the label 😉 an the label is the same on every bottle
Thank you Horst! Good review!
Horst isnt blown away here, he has much better sentiments for some much cheaper bottles
That's more surprise than anything else, in terms of quality and value. Here, he is expecting a great taste.
Wow how luck is horst to be able to drink fine spirit you gotta love this guy keep them coming
He would never opend this Farclas for 5 thousand but 2 years before he cracked open Black Bowmore for 50 thousand :D
I would personally never buy a bottle, I know I am not going to open because of the price. I buy a bottle to drink it not to let the dust get it.
Bottles like these are investments, it's like buying bonds. Given how much prices have gone up the last few years, seems like a good investment to.
@@hueyp1722 the thing is who is buying the bottle from you? It is a real doubt I have
The comments on these videos are almost better than the videos themselves. 🤣
I did not find the 12 year of Glenfarclas anything special. Is the 17 worth a try? Worth the 100 bucks in America?
+wesleytaylorviadomus

The 15 is pretty good, if your local store has a bottle.
15 is amazing value. 21 good too.

Highland park 12 old bottling
Brilliant. 🙌🏻🥃
Does glenfarclas have unlimited supply? It is sooooo ubiquitous. It's great but, I'm curious.
No they dont. They just saved alot of old cask. So they can do this
And they have absolutely 0 marketing. All word to mouth. So they dont sell alot like other distilleries
Its to expensive to open... Few months before he opened glenfiddich 40 for 7-8k $ 🤣 and now he is broken 🤦🏻♂️😮

So it's an investment. Like buying a piece of art or similar.
I wonder how much he knocks back each day?
Not much. Maybe you should watch his "how to taste whisky seris".
when start the video i said, WHAT HE WILL OPEN THIS BOTTLE????? but he didn't
Lovely really kofee
why not do the nose after the tasting?

Is the 50 chill filtered.
I think they're more like 10k per bottle these days
Lucky bastard,cheers.
A curious bottle, but 50 years in wood sounds too much to me.
Noises are pretty intense
Once in life. 50 Years. Never drink but saw. Whew! Never leave full. Promise.
I found the 15 to be better than the 21
last I seen this bottle is now at £7500
Maybe I'll get a taste some day before I die

Maybe I'll win a lottery one day... And maybe i then can taste a whisky like this 😒😂
food?
I don’t know what is so hard about not using body mics in eating and drinking based videos
gotta enjoy the whisky with all senses right... including hearing
Nosing more like 6:12
is this the oldest you have tasted.?

The sounds of mouthwash.
2000 euros, ok. It retails for 4500 pounds now....!
i think i will have 20 bottles of the 21 / 25 instead please lol
Keep it for another 30 years and you'll get the 50
Thats not how it works
These bottles now go for 7500 euro so the 2k was a steal haha
Why not make bigger casks so more whisky will be saved after 50 yrs
Khan Brook displacement then they’d need more time to get the same results
