  • Today we taste and review Laphroaig Lore and compare it to Laphroaig 10 and Ardbeg Dark Cove.

    ** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
    Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax-deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:

    ** What's with the necklaces?
    Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
    See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
    Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
    **A Whisk(e)y school?
    Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
    ** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
    Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
    Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
    It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
    ** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
    Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
    The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
    ** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
    There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
    Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
    There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
    Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

    I believe I have watched waaaaaay to many of these episodes. The reason behind this is I have recently been sick with a cold. Before taking the shot of Nyquil I recited the toast you end the episode with. My wife replied with the a roll of her eyes and I simply chuckled and coughed. Thanks for brightening up my sick days!

      Not too fond of Burboun due to the sweetness.

      My first was Bush. It was a weird experience of "I love half of this, and hate the rest." Then I tried Tullamore Dew, liked it more but wasn't crazy about it. Was told to try Redbreast and fell in love. Couldn't find it for a while, and drank Powers instead. Found Glenmorangie, and was in love. Tried Laphroaig and hated it. Tried it again three months later and tolerated it. Tried it again a further three months later and liked it. Tried it a year later and loved it. Tried Ardbeg, and have held it as the Godking of Whiskey ever since.

      Don't worry - thats a thing too.. and the variances of flavour can go from citrus, fresh fruit, stewed fruit, berry or winey notes into your caramel, nuts and chocolate. When the coffee starts extracting differently you might get sun-dried tomato, burnt toast or pork sausage.. It wont taste bad unless its over extracted or extracts far far slower than its intended - but nosing black coffee will help with nosing whiskey certainly

      Nosing clothing (like socks and underwear) isn’t as helpful usually, but you do get some interesting earthy/funky odors like those found in some of the more exotic peated whiskies. Lol!

      I found myself commentating a coffee tasting at work with colleagues. They thought I was being honest until I mentioned the toasted almond, new oak, sea spray, cinnamon and a hint of orange bitters. An older distinguished soft spoken man left the room and had replaced his mug with a glencoyne glass stating “ I’ve obviously been tasting in an inappropriate vessel “. I was the only person who caught the comment. I referred him to the tribe. He joined this morning !

    I'm about to drop some knowledge on y'all. The reason that Scotland doesn't care about yeast and Americans care a lot has to do with the water. Scotland has mostly soft water and vast portions of America, especially in central Kentucky (cough bourbon country cough) have hard water. Yeast prefers soft water. Excessively hard water can kill yeast. Hard water generally has a higher alkalinity than soft water and and yeast doesn't do well in that environment. In beer it can add a bitter or astringent note. So, basically, if it's super difficult to get yeast to grow in your distillery, why not get the best yeast possible.

      Today I picked up my first bottle of Laphroaig 10, which is my second Islay. I started exploring Islay with Ardbeg 10 a couple of weeks ago. If I live long enough to be able to afford to retire, I think I'd like to relocate to Islay when I retire. After finishing a couple of drams of Laphroaig I found myself sniffing my empty Glencairn while listening to some music. Doing so I came to the realization that the Scots seem to have an amazing ability to merge things together in magical combinations that to the rest of the world seem like odd combinations. My whisky palate is still in it's early stages of education, so I know I'm not fully appreciating all that the Laphroaig 10 I experienced tonight has to offer. From the many videos I've watched I know the range of flavors and aromas Scotch has to offer are vast, and to those unfamiliar with Scotch those flavors and aromas may seem like they wouldn't work well together. But boy do the Scots combine those flavors and aromas in amazing ways.
      As for music, while sniffing my empty Glencairn I was listening to Celtica's Megawatt and Harbour in the Sky followed by the Red Hot Chilli Pipers Just for Willie. Combining bagpipes and rock and roll might seem strange to some, but these groups do it well. I would have never dreamed of alternating between bagpipes and saxophones, but in Just For Willie the Red Hot Chilli Pipers do just that, and I find it addictive.

    Lore is one of the first bottles of "fancy" whiskey I bought my father who enjoys peated whiskey. Little did I know at the time of this video that I would be fortunate enough to speak with John Campbell and Simon Brooking at your friend Irene's new Liquor store in Conn. last year. Both of them were a delight to be around and happy to share their whiskey with many of the enthusiasts at the tasting, I feel so fortunate that I was able to talk with the gentlemen who created one of the whiskies that got both my father and I interested in the many wonders of the whiskey world! 🖖😎

    Alright, you glorious bastards, I can't seem to thank you enough. A few months back I started watching your channel. And, for a good amount of time, my liver and wallet would scream in unison whenever I noticed a new video uploaded. However, they have both since been beaten into submission by sheer whiskey passion! But, I have to thank you two for giving a poor schmuck like me, a variety of good whiskeys that aren't too expensive-- yet still taste good and have a great experience with. My most recent was based off of one of my your comment responses from a few days ago. You two mentioned Jameson Black Barrel and I had to have it. Being the huge Jameson fan that I am, trying something new seemed absolutely perfect. And the Black Barrel did not let me down. Cheers guys! I never thought I would become 'that guy' when it comes to whiskey. But, it is slowly happeneing.

    My first foray into Islay Scotch was Lore. I had been drinking mostly Highland and Speyside Scotch for many years because I liked the way that they taste, not too overpowering, if you know what I mean. I saw a bottle of Lore in one of my favorite restaurants in Atlantic City and asked the bartender to pour me a dram. Holy cats, it was like getting hit in the head with a brick. All the different flavors were just incredible. It took me a while to acclimate myself to it, but I have been a fan of Laphroaig and all Islay Scotches since. L'Chaim.

    Almost died laughing at the SoB in the beginning before the MB, Laphroaig Lore is great and still widely available here in the UK but sadly the Ardbeg Dark Cove is long gone, I really enjoyed the Dark Cove but they both are great expressions from their ranges. It would be fun to see a highlight from each Islay Distillery which features a unique cask or stand out expression.

    Daniel, you are absolutely correct to judge whisky on your own perception of quality on a case by case basis. However when you talk dismissively about NAS you influence the young whisky drinker as well. Many people base their opinions on what you say. Daniel thinks it's ok so it's ok.
    The issue is where does this lead? It leads, at best, to more and more secrecy as to what your drinking and at worst to just outright lying about what you're drinking. (Which is already happening.) You like Compass Box, you admire the Glaser. Keep these things in mind. You know that it's the good fight, be part of it.

    I recently tried Laphroaig 10 and I really enjoyed it! It was my first time venturing into smoky whiskys. Isn’t there a German yeast strain that gives banana flavors to it’s beer, maybe it can work for whisky to if this flavor gets distilled along.

    about those music and whiskey pairings. I would love to know what kind of whiskey is the best for listening to Karnivool, I do think an Islay is appropriate, but that's probably just my bias 'cus I LOVE Islay, especially Laphroaig. I would just love how you guys would go about pairing the two. Keep up the good work guys!

    yeast will add a flavour to the wort they will ferment on certain sugars, so pick your enzymes (yeast) wisely,small batch brewing will help you round out your flavours and make better product. differeent yeast ferment at different temps, pick your season, yeast,and grains,or malts to make a perfect product.

    I would really like to hear a review of the "Ileach - Man from Islay" Single Malt Scotch cask strengh (58%). It's one of my personal favorites and is one of the main reasons I got into whisky in the first place.
    Also - Beeing from Denmark - There's been a increasingly popular brand from us that I think you should try. The Stauning Whisky.

    Today you discussed yeast and the potential or lack thereof to affect the flavor profile of whiskey. In that same light, brewers use a wide range of roast levels on the grains used to make beer. There is a drastic effect on color, flavor and body of beer from roast to roast. Would there be any added characteristics if while stopping the sprouting during the malting, continuing with the heat, smoke, etc to the point of roasting the malted grain? Could this introduce new flavors, however minuscule they might be? Colors? Thoughts?

      THE WHISKY COUCH I got three bottles of LORE last night and four bottles of Grooves on sale if you can believe it! I cleaned the store out. It was an expensive night and blew my whiskies budget for the next month, but what the Hell. After my wife went to bed, I snuck the whisky in the house and hid the bottles in a wine box in our basement next to my wife’s extensive wine racks. I haven’t told my wife yet what I bought. I might be in serious trouble with her now, but if enough time passes I can legitimately say I’ve had those bottle for “quite a while” and I’m surprised she’s just noticed them because I’ve almost forgotten about them......I’m hoping for at least two weeks before I have to play that card. I learned this trick from my dad who used to buy a new set of golf clubs periodically and then didn’t tell my mother. He was a master at marital camouflage as he called it, Lol! 😜😏

    It seems to me, based on the tasting, that the Lore is like one of those really interesting people that tells really interesting stories and is so charismatic that anyone else, no matter how good they are at storytelling, just seems to come off as sounding young and naive if they try to follow. I dunno. That's just what came to mind when Rex said it made the 10 seem like candy.

    I think the pub near by has a bottle of Lore. First time I ordered laphroaig 10 there I had to wait 20 minutes for them to find a bottle cause it rarely gets ordered. They have another laphroaig on the shelf I've noticed. I think it was the quarter cask. Haven't tried them yet though. Kind of nervous to find out how much a glass costs.

      If you hunt through the comments there are a lot of people that will say the price of the whisk(e)y from their region. Rex and Daniel don't usually mention the prices because there is so much variation that it isn't too helpful for most. Although some of us MBs want to know they just don't do it.
      I'm from Ontario where Lore is $199.90 and Ardbeg Dark Cove isn't available anymore, but when it was I'm pretty sure it was just over 200 bucks. What do they cost where you're from my friend?

    I love this whisky too. It really shows how great a NAS bottlings can be. I pull out for good friends every time they ask to try a really good Islay. I actually met John Campbell at an event a while back as well. Didn't get a chance to talk to him much but he seemed like a pretty awesome guy. Quiet, but surprisingly funny.

    • @UnboundOdysseus
      @UnboundOdysseus 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      charlie.g.hague A whisky is not good BECAUSE it’s NAS (or has an age statement for that matter). NAS labeling just muddies the waters, as far as I’m concerned. I agree with Daniel’s assessment that you have to go on a case by case basis, but most NAS on the market is overpriced crap. Especially if it says “Founder’s Reserve” or just has a colour as a name. Laphroaig Quarter Cask: good. Ardbeg Uigeadail: good. Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve: meh. Macallan Gold/Amber/Sienna: overpriced meh.

    • @charlieghague
      @charlieghague 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      UnboundOdysseus Of course not. That's not what I meant. I was just saying thay Lore shows what an NAS whisky can achieve and that they're not all bad. I agree there are a lot of bad ones though.

    • @UnboundOdysseus
      @UnboundOdysseus 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      charlie.g.hague But it would be just as good with an 8 Year Age Statement wouldn’t it? Or a 10 Year age statement? Or if they included a code you could use to find out all the information you wanted, if you were so inclined. I’m always looking for an answer to these questions when it comes to NAS:
      If NAS supposedly “removes the shackles of age statements”, who is the target customer? If an “age snob” won’t buy anything under X years old (say 18), why would they buy a whisky WITHOUT any age information altogether? They wouldn’t. So people who won’t rule out “young” whisky are the ones who will give NAS a chance, right? So why hide the minimum age in the first place?

    • @charlieghague
      @charlieghague 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      UnboundOdysseus Ah, I see what you're getting at now. And I do agree with you that they should put more ages on the bottles, even if it's a low one. I was really happy to see Lagavulin 8 for that reason. Instead of going with an NAS they decided to let it all hang out and put an 8 on the bottle. I thought that was awesome.

    • @UnboundOdysseus
      @UnboundOdysseus 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      charlie.g.hague For sure. Taste is, by far, THE most important consideration. I love what Bruichladdich and Compass Box are doing. No, they don’t put the age on the label, but you can easily “nerd out” to your heart’s content with an email or a look at their website. And I’m a man who loves to nerd out.

    Ran out a bought a bottle of Lore because of you two. Thank you. For me this and Lagavulin D.E are my two favorite scotch whiskys. Can you guys give any suggestions on more affordable options in this vein? I have and like Ardbeg AN OA, Talkisker Storm, Glennfiddich 12, Rock Oyster. Because this Lore is seriously good. Also, what would be closest to Weller 12 for burbon? Around my area you can only find Weller 12 once a year if you are lucky and it is by far my favorite bourbon, so far the closest I have found to Weller 12 is Eagle Rare.
