    'According to John Campbell only 6 whiskies make up Lore. They are aged between 7 and 21 years and include some ¼ cask matured (probably the 7 year old), a 9 year refill ex-bourbon, a 9 year double matured (ex-bourbon then virgin European oak), a 1993 distilled 21 year old Laphroaig, some unspecified aged whisky that was matured in reused Laphroaig casks and another unspecified aged sherried Laphroaig as well.' Thanks to LiquorHound for that information.
    Personally I like it but I don't rate it as high as you guys. It's a well made dram but it doesn't have much complexity and this is a criticism I have of Laphroaig Distillery offerings lately. I want some wow factor. If they bottled the 10 year at 46%, instead of the watery 40% here in the U.K, that would do it. Much better stuff coming from the independents right now.

      Good whisky. Yes, there's a five minute video were he tells about the content and what the differents cask's main characteristics are. Yes it is marketing but still interesting. Search for John Campbell + Lore.

    They don't put it on the bottle or tube but John Campbell has said this is a mix of 8, 9, 10, 11, 15, and up to 21yo in those various casks. There's a TH-cam vid of him explaining how each contribute. It's basically the Quarter Cask, Triple Wood, 10yo bourbon cask and some older stock from 1992-93.

    While it's taken me a few years, I've finally moved on from my dislike of NAS expressions. There's just too many delicious NAS bottlings out there for me not to just let it go. I think it was the Kavalan Port Cask that opened my eyes. Good review, guys.

      Yup -that's exactly what came to mind. Seems as though Laphroaig's market positioning for this product is such that it is their answer to Ardbeg's Uigeadail. Significant difference in price though in my area, with the Lore more expensive by about $50.

    Nice - I'll have to pick this up. I have the Ardbeg Dark Cove LR (wish it was CR like my Kelpie), and if Scott's reminded of that one, it's a no-brainer. It's one of my favorite Islays. Glad to hear Bart was far from disappointed. I know people get hung up on the price of the NAS deal, but you have to remember, there is some 18/15 etc.. in the blend from the distillery.

    Thank you again!, I'll have to give scotch a try again. I admit that I was turned off scotch because of a friend who ofered me some of the worst blended scotch whiskyes I had ever tried, I think Johnny Walker red label was involved in that. The only passable one was a Teachers Highland cream.
    Oh, speaking of pointing your way, Sent a Letter to Dehner Distillery in Iowa, I hope they contact you for their new product they are puting out shortly named copper cross Burbon - Rye blend.
    Just got a letter from High West Whiskey club, over in Park City Utah, they sent me a little note book to take field notes on whiskeys and some stikers (nice touch), and sent me an invitation to visit their places (their Saloon in Park City, Nelson Cottage, their Distillery in Wanship and their saloon in Salt Lake city airport. I will have acces to new and limited release products from them. So I think I'll be planing a visit to Utah this year. I will report to you when I'm there ( don't know the date yet, got to convince the Mrs. first). Thanks Dummies, I'm rambling, got to go!!

Just yesterday, a customer says to start off with the Uigeadail, but then I have to, HAVE TO, try the Corryvreckan after that to knock my socks off. What say you?... And regarding the banter? Not sure if I tune in for 51% review & 49% banter, OR 49% review & 51% banter. Regardless, it's all good! Like the sound of "uncut, non-chill-filtered Dummies". I have to keep a bottle of this in my collection. Definitely not an everyday dram, but there is something special about it. I normally have 10, Quarter Cask, Three Wood and Lore in rotation. It just depends on the day which one I want to have. For my everyday drink, quarter cask is my favorite.

    I have to agree with idea you mention from other commentators. I don't just watch for the review. I'm still trying to find the episode where you two wrestle. The interplay between you two is one of the best things that make your reviews unique. Actually, watching Bart expound his deep consuming love for peated whiskies has encouraged me to test those waters. The live-streams are a bit long for me, but, if it's what you guys naturally create, I can't complain.

    I love the Laphroaig Quarter Cask and especially Laphroaig Triple Wood. My all time favorite Peats are Bowmore 18 years, Lagavulin Distiller's Edition (2001 - 2017 bottling version) and Ardbeg Dark Cove. Lagavulin Distiller's Edition is probably my favorite of the three. Is Laphroaig Lore for 180$ worth it and is it comparable to these Scotches?

    • @ScotchTestDummies

    Hey Guys:
    Here is a recipe I created that you may like to try using a LAPHROAIG/SPEYSIDE Blend.
    SLAINTE
    Mike
    MARINATED TROUT IN PEATED SCOTCH with Tarragon and Sage
    This Tastes like I cooked using a PEAT/TURF Fire.
    PEAT/Scotland, TURF/Ireland is decomposed organic plant and animal material close to the ground surface which was traditionally used to burn for heat and cooking, but now is only largely used to dry barley for whisky in the Hebrides Islands of Scotland. The PEAT/TURF Smoke is absorbed by the barley and a smokey flavor is transferred to the Whisky.
    Lay Fish in a Tuberware or other food container.
    Place Sage and tarragon leaves on the fish.
    Cover the Fish with MIST OF ISLAY 8 year old Blended Scotch ($11 and change + tax at a discount liquor store in NYC) You may use another brand if you choose.
    Cover and refrigerate for 24 Hours
    Put a small amount of oil in a baking dish; Cut potatoes place them in baking dish and season with rosemary and Thyme. Bake checking until done.
    Wrap Fish in Tin foil; place fresh Sage and Tarragon on fish and ladle marinade on the fish in the open tin foil. Close and Bake. Checking fish until done.
    Serve Trout layed over bed of potatoes.
    The Peat smoke flavor stays with the fish so that it tastes as if the fish was cooked over a PEAT/TURF Fire
    TRY IT!!!

      I'll let Scott answer...we had the Cairdeas but not sure which year...the bottle is like 40 feet away at the bar...and...well its far away...

      well don't over exert yourselves to check... haha. was just curious how it compared to laphroaig lore. I read one place that said lore is similar to select, better quality but not by much. wondering if i should spend 100 on it or just get more 10 CS!

    You should test the Lore against the Laphroaig 15. See if the Lore stands up to its price.

      But they didn't like the 15.
      Better compare it with Ardbeg Dark Cove, as Bruno said.

    • @ericgilbert8114
      @ericgilbert8114 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking along those lines because Lore and the 15 are similar in price in most areas and of course same distillery. Palates adjust and whiskies change, never sleep on any bottle. Maybe a blind tasting?

    STD, I've only had the Laphroaig 10 yr and I did not like it. They have alot of NAS bottles and its a little hard to pay the price. I have the Ardbeg Ugi and I pay $55 for that and its NAS. I would like to try the Dark Cove Committee release though. Great review.

    • @ScotchTestDummies
      @ScotchTestDummies  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Keith. We both really like the Dark Cove. Do you have a good whisky bar near you? It can be a great way to sample some different bottle prior to buying.

    • @keithpetersen560
      @keithpetersen560 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      STD, the closest whisky bar for me would be in San Francisco, which is about 1 hour. Other than that, I am not aware of one. I'm not much of a bar fly unless I go out with friends. My best bar experience was at the "Whisky Experience" in Scotland this past March. :>))

    If it's a Scotch, then it's never an NAS...it has a 3yo age statement by default. (Of course I'd love the actual age on every bottle but I understand why they don't do it)...Is the taste of the juice worth the money? That's what it boils down to for me. Like some people have said, so many delicious NAS Whiskies out there...A'bunadh, Port Charlotte Scottish Barley, Laphroaig PX cask (Haven't cracked my Lore yet so can't comment), Ardbeg Oogy...the list goes on...Let's face it, there are a lot of NAS Whiskies out there that are better than a lot of 18yo ones.
