      Why didn't you guys touched upon Luna Lovegood. She was amazing, in the books, when nothing couldn't make harry feel better, only after talking with Luna, harry felt somewhat relieved from the shock of sirius's death.
      Personally, I think Luna was there to keep harry from being completely alienated especially when it became the most important this year.

    Harry being angry, detached and alone in this movie wasn't teen angst. It was PTSD from the last movie. He literally saw his friend die, got tortured by Voldemort, watched him come back, and then was all alone for the entire summer without any contact to anyone he loved. He was going through severe trauma.

He was literally poisoned by Voldemort connection, mentally, everyone was just not willing to listen, Dumbledore was turning away from Harry and distancing himself with Harry, The ministry was dragging Harry's reputation through shit and making him seem like an insane and mentally disturbed kid.... repeatedly, nearly on a daily basis, etc.

      I actually hate this line in the movie because it makes Sirius seem psychologically damaged in some way. This is not a quote from the books and I believe is based on a comment made by Mrs. Weasley during the dinner/meeting scene after Harry arrives at Grimmuald Place: “He’s not James, Sirius!” when Sirius is trying to inform Harry on what’s been happening in the Wizarding World after his too long stay at his Aunt and Uncles. Sirius is treating Harry somewhat like an adult while Mrs. Weasley is saying he’s too young. “I’m perfectly clear who he is, thanks Molly” She also comments that Sirius is behaving as though he’s got his best friend back, to which Harry replies, “What’s wrong with that?” I just don’t believe her comments, if taken as a reference to some kind of mental instability on Sirius’ part holds water, especially when it’s never brought up again; and the book is over 800 pages long. Sorry for prattling on but I’m dead serious (pun intended) about these books! ;-)

      @arandomnamegoeshere 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      What I think the "this is just filler" comments miss is that it opens up a significant degree of complexity to the Wizarding World. Umbridge is clearly the storyline foil if not outright villain. Yet this time around, that villain has no direct connection to Voldemort. Umbridge is not a Death Eater. But she is a cruel, petty authoritarian gaining power from the fear and paranoia rising in response to Voldemort's return. Power she wields to cruel effect despite those who would guard against such things. There is more to the evil in this larger story than one single entity That Will Not Be Named.

    Fun fact: well maybe not so fun but still. Here we go. They muted Harry's scream when Sirius died because it was so heartbreaking that Helena Carter (Bellatrix) and Emma Watson (Hermione) cried. It was too sad to watch, so they muted the scream. Daniel Radcliffe screamed too loud. He had lost his grandfather earlier that week, and when he had to scream with anger and grief, he was really feeling it because he had lost his grandfather, so he gave it his all.

    *Movie Harry after Sirius dies:* has a nice CALM discussion about it
    *Book Harry after Sirius dies:* “Harry, suffering like this proves you are still a man! This pain is part of being human-”
    _“THEN-I-DON’T-WANT-TO-BE-HUMAN!”_ Harry roared, and he seized one of the delicate silver instruments from the spindle-legged table beside him and flung it across the room. It shattered into a hundred tiny pieces against the wall. Several of the pictures let out yells of anger and fright, and the portrait of Armando Dippet said, _“Really!”_
    _“I DON’T CARE!”_ Harry yelled at them, snatching up the lunascope and throwing it into the fireplace. “I’VE HAD ENOUGH, I’VE SEEN ENOUGH, I WANT OUT, I WANT IT TO END, I DON’T CARE ANYMORE-”
    He seized the table on which the silver instrument had stood and threw that, too. It broke apart on the floor and the legs rolled in a hundred different directions.
    Yeah the movies do Harry really REALLY dirty in terms of his mental state. People all the time made fun of his "teenage angst" when in reality, if they read the BOOK, they'd understand this CHILD had a full on mental breakdown, WHICH IS UNDERSTANDABLE given he just watched his last tie to his mother and father be murdered before his eyes. Harry saying "I WANT IT TO END" is one of a few A FEW instances in the books where he wishes he were dead. The other being when he and Hermione visit his mother and father "But they were not living, thought Harry: They were gone. The empty words could not disguise the fact that his parents' moldering remains lay beneath snow and stone, indifferent, unknowing. And tears came before he could stop them, boiling hot then instantly freezing on his face, and what was the point in wiping them off or pretending? He let them fall, his lips pressed hard together, looking down at the thick snow hiding from his eyes the place where the last of Lily and James lay, bones now, surely, or dust, not knowing or caring that their living son stood so near, his heart still beating, alive because of their sacrifice and close to wishing, at this moment, that he was sleeping under the snow with them."
    This kid SUFFERS and it's not something to be made light of. The movies do not do a good job of showing this. Not at all. This movie IN PARTICULAR cuts out WAY too much of what harry had to go through in his fifth year.

    The movies are fun and entertaining and tell the general story fairly well. But the books go so heavy into detail and there's all sorts of fun lore bits to pick up when you read them.

    One of the things they really missed the mark on in this film is Harry finally blowing up from all his frustration. Sirius has just been murdered, Dumbledore has been ignoring him the whole year, the prophecy has added even more weight to his shoulders and overall he feels like he’s being kept in the dark about alot of things. We got the one “Look at me line” where Harry screams at Dumbledore but that was about it. In the books during the final conversation between Harry and Dumbledore, Harry finally gets a chance to let out all that bottled up anger. He is screaming at Dumbledore and literally destroying his office demanding answers. And if i remember correctly Dumbledore even cries, finally breaking that always calm and collected state we usually see him in. You get to see a side of both of them that you havn’t seen before and it would of been nice to see that translated on the big screen. It’s one of the most pivitol conversations in the series and they make it have no emotion and stagnant camera shots that doesn’t really sell the scene.

James scoffed at Snape's desire that he and Lily Evans would be Sorted into Slytherin house, while Snape sneered at James's hope that he would follow his father's footsteps and end up in Gryffindor. He and Sirius bestowed the mocking nickname of "Snivellus" on Snape at this first meeting. This enmity would continue for the rest of their school years and (on Snape's part) well after James's death. According to Sirius, Snape envied James's popularity and Quidditch talents, and always tried to get him and his friends in trouble, while James despised Snape's fascination with the Dark Arts. James (and Sirius) also frequently bullied Severus Snape during his fifth year.
      Later, it is revealed that James and Snape would regularly pass snide remarks and taunts towards each other. Although James disliked and bullied Snape, in the end, James never wanted Snape dead despite his distaste of him and risked his life to save Snape's when Sirius played a potentially lethal prank on him by sending him to the Shrieking Shack when Remus Lupin was there transforming. So, I absolutely love this particular book because it felt like I as the reader was being challenged; Harry's father isn't the shining knight he thought he was, but he wasn't evil (James Potter and Snape would curse each other every chance they got; it was a rivalry similar to Harry and Draco). Don't always trust authority and your government. The media in particular is extremely manipulative and may be serving their own agendas. Someone who may be distancing themselves from you may be doing it for legitimate reasons. While Sirius was a good person to Harry, he wasn't the best parental figure (that scene where Sirius tells Harry he's not a bad person didn't go down the same way in the book; Harry left without feeling comforted, just feeling more down) and Sirius also treated that house elf cruelly but it was as a result of depression from being locked up in that house for a year and hating everything associated with his family.
    Harry in particular in this book, while questioning a lot of things about himself, was in a state where he would jump to conclusions. He was convinced that he needed to run away and stay away from human beings in general because he thought he was transforming into a snake when he slept after the Arthur Weasley incident. He eventually was convinced otherwise but it took some persuading from his friends. There were other examples like what happened with Sirius; Hermione had to convince him to try and check if Sirius was actually missing because it could be a false vision Voldemort made him see; Voldemort prepared for this mind you and the house elf lied to Harry saying Sirius was gone, but Harry was convinced it was a waste of time and needed to get to Sirius fast.
    It was a very good example of how a teenage boy acts; convinced they're right and emotional beyond all measure. People hated it, but I found it refreshing that we're going through this with Harry and while we don't agree with what he's doing we want to help him.

The attack on Harry's mind. Now one of my favorite of the movies. Almost as good as Prisoner of Azkaban. Not quite as good as the one coming up....

    Fun fact according to Rowling Harry would NEVER be able to master Occlumency because he's too mentally damaged. So his repelling of the spell makes no sense here. He finds out about his father by SNOOPING AROUND in Snape's memories, which is something I WISH they kept cause it shows that even as a GOOD GUY Harry can still make mistakes and screw up. That was something he did that was WRONG-invading someone's privacy like that. It warrants Snape's unadulterated RAGE there but here his reaction has to be different and cold cause...he just repelled the spell. OOooh. Ugh. This movie.

    • @DrPantsMD
      @DrPantsMD 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be fair, casting Protego isn't Occlumency, Voldemort didn't point his wand and cast a spell at Harry to affect his mind. Casting Protego would never have stopped Voldemort.

    • @ajrochester9364
      @ajrochester9364 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well he never really didn’t master it you see in deathly hallows movies he struggles to stop voldemort reading his mind at certain important moments.. Yes there is a lot missing from the books in the movies but I liked how Harry repelled the spell it was a juicy scene at the time… Also Snape was being harsh because he wanted to teach Harry…. Snape reacted in a way which is normal too. Important to note Snape in this scene I don’t think expected Harry to do that… I liked this scene a lot though because for alot of people who didn’t read the books they would of gone into this going “oh wow that’s crazy “ type of mood.

    • @jethro4453
      @jethro4453 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be fair, in the book Harry did cast a shield charm during one of their lessons. He didn't see the memory that the movie showed, but he did see some flashes, like a young kid Snape hiding while his parents fought/argued.

    • @alharairah2214
      @alharairah2214 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Harry did use the shield charm on Snape and saw flashes of a man (Severus' father) yelling at a woman (Severus' mother) while a child cried in the corner (Severus). But yes, the discovery that James was a bully did occur when Harry checked the Penseive to see what memories Snape was protecting.

    Holden: your feelings on "touched on stuff and done with that" really came from trimming an 800+ page book into a 2 hour movie. All of that stuff actually is way more detailed in the book. This movie had the most cut from it of any book, but it's still like 90% fantastic adaptation, as the majority of stuff cut or trimmed wasn't entirely consequential. Think of it like Age of Ultron... it just becomes more important in retrospect of the rest of the franchise.
    But the prophecy was cut down a bit, really to remove the specifics, which is what also linked Neville and his story to this. Neville's hospital scene with his parents is kinda retold in the Room of Requirement, but it's such a sweet and sad moment in the book that the film version doesn't come close.
    They also cut Snape's Worst Memory. There are two bits to Harry's mind reading backfire, and they told the wrong one, albeit still an important one. They also removed the entire climax fighting in the Department of Mysteries before getting to the Hall of Prophecies,, which is probably the weirdest, trippiest moment of the series.
    But the Voldemort/Dumbledore fight is great. The DA stuff is great. Luna was absolutely perfect (she did meet JK Rowling, who said Evanna Lynch basically popped out of her head, but only after she was cast). The possession scene is fantastic. This actually was my favorite for a while, and I still might say it depending on mood.
    There are also great things added that weren't in the book... my favorite here being Harry telling Umbridge he must not tell lies at the end with the centaurs.

    • @dansharp2860
      @dansharp2860 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They also miss out Harry's interview in the Quibbler. Cut from the Goblet of Fire movie is the fact that Rita Skeeter was an unregistered Animagus and that she was writing about events she was nowhere near (until you realise she was in her beetle form). Hermione worked it out, trapped her and blackmailed her into not writing anymore of her trash. Then in OotP Hermione agrees not to tell anyone if Rita will interview Harry about what really happened in the graveyard with Voldemort's return and Cedric's death.
      There is a clear subtext going on in the OotP book about not blindly believing establishment media or that governments always have the peoples best interests at heart. Rita straight up says that The Daily Prophet wouldn't publish the interview if Rita submitted it because the Ministry were leaning on them to write stories about Harry being a liar and Dumbledore being an old kook past his prime. Luna somewhat balances this out to remind people to also not just believe any and every conspiracy theory but this theme of healthy distrust of establishment follows through the rest of the series from here. I really feel the movies downplayed this aspect of the books.

      Yeah, I understand the restrictions of the movie telling, but I'll always be a bit disappointed that they only showed James bullying Snape, like Snape was all sad and innocent. I think it perpetuates the fact that a lot of fans don't see a fault in Snape. Because if you only watch the movies, Snape is just a emo guy whose heart was broken. But in reality, he's such a grey character. And I think that's what makes it interesting : that you can do good and bad things in your life, but still make the right choice in the end.
