It should be pointed out that Snape revealing himself to be the Half-Blood Prince is much bigger bombshell in the book. Harry spends the entire year learning from the Prince, defending him from Hermione and even feeling a bit of a kinship to him.
Ironically, Harry probably learns more about potions in his 1 year learning from the Prince than he does in 5 full years with Snape 😂

to be fair, the most Harry learned about potions was in fact in his very first potions lesson when Snape first told him about draught of the living dead (for which using Snape's book here he got Felix Felicis), bezoar (the very thing that saved Ron's life in this year), and aconite (a hint Lupin himself gave in PoA foreshadowing his lycanthropy, which Harry of course misinterprets by concluding Snape is poisoning Lupin... lol book Harry)...

book harry ginny kiss: “we won!!” yelled ron, bounding into sight and brandishing the silver cup at harry. “we won! four hundred and fifty to a hundred and fourty! we won!”
harry looked around; there was ginny running towards him; she had a hard blazing look on her face as she threw her arms around him. and without thinking, without planning, without worrying about the fact that fifty people were watching, harry kissed her.
after several long moments - or it might have been half an hour - or possibly several sunlit days - they broke apart. the room had gone very quiet. then several people wolf whistled and there was an outbreak of nervous giggling. harry looked over the top of ginnys head to see dean thomas holding a shattered glass in his hand and romilda vane looking as though she might throw something. hermione was beaming, but harrys eyes sought ron. at last he found him, still clutching the cup and wearing an expression appropriate to having been clubbed over the head. for a fraction of a second they looked at each other, then ron gave a tiny jerk of the head that harry understood to mean, ‘well - if you must.’

In the book Tonks is super depressed because Remus doesn't think he deserves her because of his werewolf status and she loves him. And him her, but he is keeping away from her. I love the two of them. This book is where they get together. Also, the movie leaves out the whole thing that Fleur Delacour from Goblet of Fire is engaged to Bill Weasley, the oldest Weasley and they met when Harry was in the tournament. A TON of the story of Harry and Ginny is left out of the movies making their relationship come out of left field. The movie tries to make up for that by showing Ginny run after Harry at the Burrow when he goes after Bellatrix. In that way, they show how strong her feelings are that she's willing to risk her life. Also, Ginny is POWERFUL. Because she is the 7th child and 7 is a hugely significant number in magic. Which is also why Tom Riddle wanted to split his soul into 7 parts. The movies are the exposed portion of the iceberg. The books are the 80% below the surface that you don't see. I have NO judgement at all for people that don't read the books. Some people just don't and that's fine, but I definitely recommend. Even on audiobooks. The books hold the true magic.

Imagine how Harry’s feeling right now. He absolutely disliked Snape since he entered Hogwarts, but when he asked about his loyalty, Dumbledore always said that Snape was on their side, so he couldn’t create theories that he was loyal to Voldemort and could only dislike him because of the way he treated him. And then this happens, Snape betrays the man Harry admired the most and kills him off, proving to be a bad guy. The “HE TRUSTED YOU!” represents it so perfectly because now Harry doesn’t dislike Snape, he HATES Snape, because he’s proven being not a man who mistreats a student, but a despicable human being.

    • @goldenstatewarriors9418
      @goldenstatewarriors9418 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

He's hated Snape since the end of the Order of the Phoenix because he felt Snape got Sirius killed. Theres a passage at the end when Snape confronts him when he faces Malfoy saying "He felt a surge of anger and loathing, far more than anything he had for Malfoy. No matter what Dumbledore said, he would never, ever forgive Snape."
That being said, I do find what you said intriguing because funnily enough, Snape felt the same way at that point which makes that sequence all the more powerful.
Snape disliked Harry from the day he entered Hogwarts when seeing so much of James Potter, the man who tormented him throughout his childhood in him. But then as time went on, Harry sought more glory and fame (from Snape's POV we know this isn't true). Yet, under Dumbledore's orders, he spent his entire life protecting Harry who wouldn't never give him credit for it and likely still hate him. He was forced to teach Harry Occlumency, who never listened or learned, and ultimately, took advantage of Snape while he was gone and saw the worst moments of his life in the Pensieve. Snape risked everything, living a life nobody would want to live and being a triple agent, lying directly to the most powerful dark wizard ever, only to find out all his work to protect Harry was all for nothing as Dumbledore was planning Harry's death anyway. He promised Dumbledore he'd do anything if Dumbledore protected Lily. Dumbledore failed his end of the bargain because of Wormtail, and Snape lived the rest of his life with his end. Snape watched Harry claim brilliance in Potions using his old work and used Snape's own magic to harm Malfoy, who he had sworn an Unbreakable Vow to protect. Snape saved Dumbledore's life from the ring yet would then have to kill him under Dumbledore's own orders, and take the blame for the murder of the man he saved and play a dangerous part, in which he nearly sacrificed everything he ever fought for. Which is why he was so enraged when Harry called him a coward. Snape was not a coward. He risked everything to protect Harry who he never expected to acknowledge or forgive as part of the plan but calling him a coward particularly enraged Snape.

Harry and Ginny's relationship is one of the things that most people agree was done a disservice from the books. Book Ginny is feisty, a spit fire, doesn't take shit from anyone. She had character beyond a few lines spoken to Harry.
One particular moment that is the best example I can think of is in the Half Blood Prince after Harry and Ginny become an item.
Ginny sitting in the common room with Harry, Ron, and Hermione reading a book "All these attacks by Death Eaters and all (insert girl's name here) is interested in is whether Harry has a tattoo of a Hippogriff on his chest."
Harry: "What did you tell her?"
"I told her it was a Hungarian Horntail. More manly."
Ron irritated says something about how he doesn't want to hear about this.
Ginny: "Don't worry Ron, I told her you had one of a Pygmy Puff, but I didn't tell her where."

I don't know how it is across the board, but among people I know I've noticed a trend where Half Blood Prince is often in the top two favourite movies of people who haven't read the books, but one of the least favourites among people who have on account of how much they cut.
All the movies drop things from the books due to time constraints, such as Hermione's campaign for Elf rights in book 4-5, Dobby joining the Hogwarts staff in book 4 or minor teachers, such as the centaur teacher, Firenze in book 5 - but the Half Blood Prince movie feels at times like its adapting the Wiki summary page of the book rather than the book itself given how much they cut. The book explored the story of Voldemort's origin and rise to power ahead of the first war and Snape's background, which feel rather important to the overarching story of the series - but barring the scene at the orphanage and the flashback of Snape being bullied by James, they cut out so much to make way for teenage romantic hijinks, including the awkward, made for movie only scene, about shoelace tying. When I saw this in the cinema back in the day, I had to explain to my friends in the lobby afterwards why Snape was the Half-Blood Prince, which, given the movie is named after him, seems a big failing on the movie's part.
That said, I do find Ron and Lavander's interactions pretty funny, but I just wish if they were going to focus on the romance at the expense of Voldemort's origin, they'd have put more effort into it than having Ginny tie Harry's shoelaces.

    • @giulyuni
      @giulyuni 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I agree! Book 6 is my absolute favourite as it unveils a lot of the background events that lead to the things happening during Harry’s time at Hogwarts and where we see all the characters being way more grown up in the way they act and in their decisions. I don’t know why they cut almost all of it out of the movie, it was the worst choice they could make! And as you said I despise the movie for this reason, ever since I’ve seen it the first time in theatre. No wonder all the people that have never read the books are so confused at the end of it 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @goldenstatewarriors9418
      @goldenstatewarriors9418 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I agree. They cut the wrong stuff and added unnecessary scenes. First of all, redo the entire Christmas sequence as that 15 minutes was completely different and most of it was unnecessary wether it be the shoelace stuff or the Burrow burning down. Add in the Gaunt memory and a few of the others like job request and Hepzibah Smith and spend more time focusing on the Half-Blood Prince's book and who figuring out who he is.
The reveal in the book was brutal because the Prince was someone Harry connected with, defended, and that helped him throughout the entire year wether it was to save Ron or impress Slughorn. And then it turns out he was not only the man who sold out his parents, but also that killed his greatest guardian/mentor. In the movie its like: "wait what?" What's the Half-Blood Prince again? Is that just supposed to be the title of this movie.

Idk why everyone forgets about this but also that shoe tie shouldn’t have been a thing as well as the attack on the weasleys home??? Why tf would they attack their house????? And they chose to do that instead of the huge battle at the end of the movie??? The priorities in this movie were just so confusing to me because literally they make the half blood prince thing not very important and they take out so much of Tom riddles past which is literally crucial for the horcruxes and changed the entire horcrux thing in later movies. And then they focused MAINLY on awkward romances ?? Like I get them focusing on harry and Ginny bc this is the book they get together. But they made it sooooo fuckin awkward and it came out of nowhere 😭. They ended up focusing more on lavender in what felt like a weird misogynistic thing idk I just didn’t like the direction they went w that. I also kinda wish they’d have done the battle at the end of the book bc it includes stuff like fawkes singing the lament and it really drives home the supposed betrayal on snapes part. Bc everyone feels like it was their fault. I don’t know. I still like this movie a lot but I can’t help but mourn everything that was left out that sooo many ppl will never experience bc they refuse to read the books 😭😭

Initially, I thought it was too slow for me, and visually dark (especially if you watch it during the day, with a lot of light) but now, I love what it does here, and the look of it (It really shows how hazy and foggy the UK area can be lol)
Unfortunately, the movies cut a bit, and especially these later ones hurt the most from it, like minor story lines that become important for context, and minor character beats that were removed, by are treated as actually happening. The biggest change from book to movie is in the book, they explore a lot more of Tom Riddle's back story. For example, they already know in Half Blood Prince the the cup of Hufflepuff was also turned into a horcrux, but have no idea where it was hidden. Looking at memories related to younger Tom Riddle, they are able to deduce the following horcruxes: Diary (Destroyed in Chamber of Secrets), The Gaunt family ring (Discovered and destroyed by Dumbledore immediately before beginning of book 6), The locket of Slytherin (Originally hidden in the cave, current whereabouts unknown), the cup of Hufflepuff (location unkown), and two others with a strong likelihood of one of them having a connection to Ravenclaw. Voldemort had also been trying to recover the sword of Gryffindor to turn into one, but had been unable to retrieve it. That is the most important thing from book 6 that did not make it into the movie.

Horace Slughorn was played by James Broadbent. According to imdb, he's amassed 166 movie roles to his credit from 1971 to the present. He's appeared in the two Paddington movies, Hot Fuzz, Brazil, Gangs of New York and Moulin Rouge.
For those who read the books, the movie put in a different Harry introduction scene. The novel's was great where Dumbledore visits the Dursley's to take Harry with him. Before he chastises the Aunt and Uncle, he offers them drinks of mead and when they don't take them, they start to annoyingly knock against their heads. I regret they didn't use that and instead had Harry reading the Daily Prophet in public to where the counter girl remarks on thinking she saw the images in the photographs moving.
Also missing from the movie was the first battle at Hogwarts; the battle that disfigured Bill Weasley's face after an attack by the main bad werewolf who had not transformed during the attack. This werewolf was also the one that bit Remus Lupin when he was a boy -- Fenrir Greyback.
Because of the compression of time for a movie running time, a few other flashbacks regarding Tom Riddle was omitted; my favorite showed his Grandfather, mother and uncle. I truly hope someone decides to mount a miniseries in the future (and my lifetime) that is faithful to the novels. Those who grew up on the movies would be very surprised to see scenes and characters the movies omitted.
Supposedly, Daniel was buzzed on alcohol for a portion of the movie's filming. I don't notice it and in fact I like his performance, especially after taking the liquid luck.
I enjoyed this reaction video a lot. The look of suppressed mischief and glee on your face, Holden, was priceless as you had to keep up the subterfuge so as not to spoil her enjoyment of discovery during the final two movies.

I agree with you 100%. My hope is that hbomax, which is owned by Warner Bros. and in turn has the film rights, will do a series more closely true to the books, with the shorter books like “Stone” being 3 or 4 episodes and OotP having a full 10 or 12 episodes. We’re closely approaching the 20th anniversary of the release of the “Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone” movie and a reboot announcement would really hit the spot, like a warm, frothy butterbeer on a chilly Hogsmeade weekend.

Fun little differences I remember from the books off the top of my head:
    1. The whole death eater attack at the Burrow(Weasly's house) was not in the books they put that in to have a little more action in the middle of the movie.
    2. In the book there are a lot more memories that Harry sees through the Pensieve, a lot of backstory on Voldemort's family and how he was conceived under a love potion which is the reason why he is devoid of it.
    3. At the end of the book after dumbledore is murdered, there is quite a battle/skirmish that breaks out between the death eaters who infiltrated Hogwarts and lots of students and teacher which was also cut from this movie to I think make this movie end on pretty much a sad note.
    4. Dumbledore had an entire funeral in the books where there were a few bits of exposition given about what Harry's plan was etc, also cut.
    5. In the books they also reveal that Snape overheard Trelawny's prophecy about the one who can vanquish the Dark lord being born at the end of July, at that time 2 people were born: Neville Longbottom and Harry Potter. This leading into the part where Voldemort went after the Potter's whose location was revealed by Peter Pettigrew because he believed Harry to be the chosen one. Edit: Bellatrix went after the Longbottoms after Voldemort's defeat.

Bellatrix doesn't go after Neville at the same time as Voldemort goes after Harry. Voldemort decided that Harry was the one so the Potters were in hiding for about a year until Sirius and Peter switched the Secret Keeper role. Voldemort went straight after Harry (well, he waited for Halloween) and the events we all know so well played out. It was only when Voldemort fell that the LeStranges and Barty Jr went after Alice and Frank. They seemed to think that they would know what had happened on that fateful night and where Voldemort had gone. Neville wasn't even a concern of the Death Eaters, they just wanted their leader back.

My biggest problem with this movie is that they only showed 2 of the memories that dumbledore and Harry watched together. In the book there were like 6 of them and they were all really interesting.

I agree. They should have focused in all these memories and Voldemorts past instead of giving us so many romantic moments and that

I used to like Holden’s smirks at the camera but not anymore. He might as well be telling her the truth at this point 🤦🏻‍♂️

Nah it never gets old , plus it's better for Jen to find out herself instead of Holden spoiling it.

@@Drugstorecowboy8 Yeah that was my point… The smirks basically alluded to the fact that things aren’t as they seem on screen (e.g. red herrings). A few times during the series Jen knew something was off because of Holden and not because she figured it out herself.

Because... Rowling said that right after the 7th book was released back in 2007. Its never confirmed in the book, but its definitely possible, in his relationship with Grindelwald. He said he was "blinded by love," and that stopped him from seeing Grindelwald's true colors, which could definitely mean he was in love with Grindelwald.

This book was my favorite for a very long time. And, to be honest, the first time I saw this movie, it enraged me!
    Big changes scene:
    Book:
Dumbeldore petrified Harry during his death scene. He was also hidden in a corner, under his invisibility cloak.
Snape didn’t interact with Harry in this moment. He walked in, Dumbeldore says his, “Severus, please” line, and Snape just kills him.
The book makes it so much more painful for Harry, because he could literally do nothing.
Note: This isn’t the only reason I disliked the movie at first. Just one of the biggest.
I’ve since grown to accept the movieverse is it’s own thing, and the books are always there to revisit as well.
