I agree completely. But I was also thinking: Steve was tempted to change for the worse from the outside (to be complacent in a world where to do so was wrong). And Tony was tempted to change for the good from the outside (to stop being complacent in a world where to do so was wrong). Actually it may seem Steve always makes the "right" decisions simply because he is 'the good guy with no flaws' but people will be lulled into a false sense of security if they think that...
Perfect explanation. I wasn't a fan that he was trying to dog Tony for changing because the world said so and because he is easily swayed. No he changed because he saw that the path he was on was causing nothing but harm and he changed FOR the world. Not because the world changed him
Lol. You know she is gonna love it when that line is delivered. First it was Anakin, now it’s Tony. Poor Holden. You know she is gonna be all about Vegeta down the line too.
Mind = blown! After all these years, now I find out he's not a fish?! Could they not just put a line in the movie explaining that? Colonel Phillips: "That Red Skull guy, you know he's not a fish. Right?"
The storytelling done by the MCU is incredible. Cap’s conversation with Dr. Erskine the night before his transformation has so much depth to it after everything that’s happened. That scene brings me to tears every time I watch it now.
Erskine's deep concern with finding someone who wouldn't be corrupted by their power is a really good message. Steve's big heart in the pre serum portion of the movie really sold me on a character I never thought I'd care for going into it the first time.
Holden, don’t forget you’ve had the advantage of seeing Cap in 7 films. This is the first time Jen has seen him. I didn’t like The First Avenger as much as the other Cap films, but he’s my fave MCU character now.
I liked Steve from day 1, still my fav in the end, right there with Loki . It's a cruel world to live in. And it's easier to be a Tony when you have billions, but far more difficult to be a honorable Steve when the universe feels like it's set on giving you hell. I'm more of a Loki person myself
The first avenger is where you should fall in love with cap. But I’m an OG cap fan so that first film did it complete justice as a fan but I can see if you aren’t a cap fan it might seem like an okay film. To me this was the best origin movie of all the characters including Tony but Iron Man 1 is my second fav
Raghu Sharma yeah i fell in love with him when I watched the first cap movie. I did not like him as much when I watched the early avengers movies before. Now he is also my fave and this movie is the best origin movie for me. Never liked iron man that much
Totally with Holden on his views on Cap. There is just something great about a guy just being a good guy because it’s the right thing to do. No hidden agenda. Team Cap all the way!
You can't say that Steve Rogers didn't change. It was just subtle changes. He became more confident. He realized that sometimes the right thing to do, doesn't always mean following orders. He went from wanting to die for his county, because he had nothing to lose. To having something to live for, but still being willing to sacrifice himself to save others. He's consistently a selfless and duty bound person. But his attitude and motivations change.
He is a flat character he changes the world and people around him this is perfectly shown in civil war where his ideals from WW2 still show in the modern world where things aren't so black and white anymore and he is willing to be known as a war criminal for his friends and beliefs
@@tick1180 they were both wrong in civil war, you can see it from both sides , i was stuck in the middle but when tony found out cap kept that secret from him , i was team tony .
Jen makes a good point here...Cap doesn't really show his character arc until much farther in the MCU...he definitely has one, but it takes a lot longer for it to fully develop
Jen is such a mood 😂 Steve: "Women don't wanna dance with a guy they can step on" Jen: "awww" Peggy: *angrily shoots at Steve* Jen: "I like her!" Jen: "Oh that looks fun, can we do that!" Holden: "You wanna zipline onto a train full of Nazis?" Jen: "Yeah!"
Give her time. I left theaters after Civil War with the sudden realization that Captain America was my favorite Avenger. He is now my favorite superhero across the board.
Same dude. The ending of civil war was so ground breaking, and after Cap gave that speech (from the letter) and showed up to the prison to free the other heroes, he immediately became my favorite.
@@insertnamehere2746 That film was where I saw the value of his virtues. He never backs down from a fight. He always does what is right even if no one thinks it's what's best. I also agreed with him not wanting to be controlled by some political entity with an agenda.
I respect Cap, but I’m still a diehard Ironman fan. I left Civil War a bit peeved at all of the characters betraying Tony, but respecting why Steve did what he did. (Still think Tony is ultimately in the right tho. He would have helped them if they had just listened.) ...This isn’t spoilery right?
@@DarkFoxKirin Tony had good intentions but ultimately the accords did more bad than good. Many enhance people did sign them and registered. The list got out to anti inhuman groups who then got violent and even killed people who had registered. Requiring those with power to wear tracking bracelets. The super could be dead by the time I got there.
@@rickbotic6063 But Tony was advocating to have the accords edited and changed to benefit the enhanced more. It wasn't going to be the final say. I find Cap so inspiring because he is almost an ideal man because of his strength, agility, endurance, physical presence but what truly makes him great is how he uses his abilities for good and never compromises on his values even when he is put in difficult situations.
Cap: *is a good guy because he never compromises* Also Cap: *refuses to take responsibility for his actions, breaks international law, causes a civil war between his friends, and breaks his friend's heart all to help one of his old buddies who is a fugitive*
@@hanburgundy4317 he breaks international law to protect Bucky who was framed for something he didn't do and also he never intentionally started a civil war with his friends, he just wanted to make it to the jet in time to reach Siberia which his friends never let him do, they just simply refused to hear his side of the story and started the fight causing him to fight back. He even admitted his mistake to Tony in the end by stating that he should have told him about his parent's death but didn't to avoid conflict which was clearly wrong and therefore took responsibility for his actions.
He wasn’t trying to “join the army”, he was trying to do something significant to make the world a better place. The army was just the only way to do that at the time.
Nope, that is exactly what he was trying to do. Without any understanding that this would end up causing a number of unnecessary deaths among of his comrades because of his physical condition. He has absolutely no self-preservation instinct and this is the worst possible quality for a soldier. And he would have successfully enlisted by forging the documents, unless the doctor noticed him and took with him for super-soldier program. If he just wanted to be useful he could have applied for a job on a factory- making bullets, trucks, weapons, food, but instead he did everything to get to the front to punish "bullies", bringing death by his own hand. That is nowhere near being a hero, the man has no responsibility, and seems to be not even aware of such thing.
@@АлександрПазгалов you’re focused only on the mechanical reality of actions and consequences and not on the emotional and psychological reasons behind those actions. The part when Peggy reaches for caps chest was genuine reaction from the actress Haley Atwell seeing Chris Evans shirtless for the first time and they kept it in the movie 😆
Id honestly love a video essay or something from Holden explaining Cap's character and why he loves him so much. Even though it was in short bursts, some of the thoughts on him in this vid were so well formulated and insightful.

@@genghisgalahad8465 Disagree. Tony's arc was that he realized he was making the world a more dangerous place, so he eventually sacrifices himself to save it. Steve returns to a damaged, soulless world and makes it a better, more honorable place. One of his most famous quotes (which was said by Sharon Carter in Civil War) is, "When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world - 'No, you move.'" The world doesn't change Cap. He's the anchor everyone else clings to.
@@charmlessman1 the modern world changes and changed Cap. SHIELD being infiltrated by HYDRA changed Cap’s worldview. Tony changed Cap in Civil War. The Winter Soldier and Wanda changed Cap by him siding with them over being a Boy Scout. Then again, he’s an independent thinker since his beginning. He’s not just a “yes, sir, whatever you say, sir” when he went to rescue men in First Avenger against orders. And he changed in The Avengers when Tony and Bruce prompted him about Fury’s secret dealing to procure weapons made from the power of the Tesseract. Stark changes the world for good and bad. He was responsible also for Ultron (although Scarlet Witch had a ton to do with that!) He settled down and had his family but worked out the solution to quantum time travel and therefore changes the post-snap world. SNAP*
I really like the conversation after the movie. It's nice to see two people obviously having the most respect for each other personally engaging in this discussion from totally different perspectives. By the way, I'm almost 100% agreeing with everything Jen said and felt about the Captain and the movie (including the rating) :D But I also agree with Holden in that we can definitely expect him to grow on you during his future adventures and the interactions with other characters/superheros. And Winter Soldier is a GREAT movie indeed!
For me it was from the first Avenger. More that Thor and Iron man, cap is the definition of hero. Not saying that Thor and Tony ain't heroes but Thor is a God and Tony is a billionaire, playboy. But Steve is just a kid from Brooklyn.
Always loved this movie. Never understood the hatred. The 40s flair and music are great. Steve, Peggy, Philipps, Erskine... all likeable and good characters. It's especially great character writing that Steve is so likeable while being such a white meat babyface, always trying to do whats right. Its easy to come off as a douche. And that is in no way happening.
The thing is that I don't think most people were team cap after the first Captain America movie. Captain America only gets really good in the subsequent films.
@@repoedokami941 OK, so maybe 5% of people were huge Captain America fans after the first movie. I'm just saying, I think most people were pretty lukewarm on the first Captain America and Thor movies. They were either low budget or looked very low budget. Both were very rough and I think had most people thinking, "I hope they can pull off this whole avengers thing. Hopefully the studio doesn't completely scrap it."
This movie is top 5 in the MCU for me. First MCU movie I ever saw in theaters when I was 7 years old. Absolutely love the message and themes of the movie. Thank you captain for inspiring me to be the best man I can possibly be.
I love that Peggy also moves towards the grenade as well. Shows in a subtle way while she was also Chosen. And I think it sheds more light on the conversation that she had with Steve in the car Donna about their struggles.
I was rolling when I heard her reasons for liking Ironman more. She makes very good points but I'm not sure she understood why Captain America can be a great character as well. The contrasts between Ironman and Captain America makes both better characters.
It was good to see Jen get excited about the Avengers trailer. It bodes well. Captain American is my very favorite hero, hands down. So I'm with you there, Holden. He has been and always will be the heart and soul of the Avengers. It's okay if he doesn't light Jen up, especially here at the beginning of her MCU journey. Remember, this is the first time she's seen him while you, Holden, have what sounds like a long history knowing Cap. I'm willing to bet that as things progress she'll take more of a liking to him. Thanks for a fun time rewatching Captain America!
Consistency is a very undervalued trait...People tend to be impressed with the changes shown in a short time, e.g body transformations. But I think its far more impressive consistently fit for like 20 years. Just because you're flawed and changed a bit and did the right thing now people tend to be more impressed because you surprised them, compared to if you're always good and have always done the right thing.
People tend to take that consistency for granted! I love Iron Man but everytime Cap comes on the screen you just feel relieved & he gives you the feel that everything will be okay.
*I dont know about that but... there's those purists who believes that Phase 1 is the best MCU Phase and they claim that movies after them have decreased in quality.*
@@johnelmartagbago3764 I can understand that but the other phases have created individual masterpieces who are much better when compared to the movies in phase 1. The reason people like phase 1 more because it was instrumental in the beginning of the mcu and also because of the nostalgia as characters like captain America and hulk are more well known during the comics than characters like Dr strange or falcon.
@@johnelmartagbago3764 Wow! I actually did not know that. Not that I don't like Phase 1 but I think Phase 2 and especially 3 gave us some of the best comic book based movies in history.

You can tell how much Holden loves this movie by the way he edits the reaction and the scenes he includes. (That is, if he is still doing his own editing)
@@tomn6800 The UN simply asked that the Avengers take responsibility for their actions; Steve didn't want any part of that - he wanted to do things his way. We saw that from the moment in The First Avenger when Steve disobeyed a direct command from Tommy Lee Jones: Cap does what Cap wants, what he thinks is best for him. He willingly broke up The Avengers just to help his old buddy; his old buddy that was, and plausibly still is, a programmable weapon directly responsible for dozens (hundreds?) of deaths. IDK how people can be on Team Cap for the MCU Civil War; I really can't.
It doesn't have to be. Winter Soldier I found to be literally one of the best MCU movies and Cap the second most boring hero throughout everything (after Spiderman of course) including the next phases to date. The Winter Soldier is literally carried by Bucky.
If she liked Iron Man for keeping her on the edge of her seat, I have a feeling she'll come around on Cap with The Winter Soldier. Also, RIP Bucky. He shall be remembered fondly.
I feel pretty confident that after the reaction to Nick Fury proclaiming The Avenger Initiative in Iron Man... Disney realized the release of The Avengers was going to be a big money-maker. But, sure... it is very confident of them!
I'm pretty sure that is because Kevin Feige is a big fan of Robert Zemeckis and Just like Back to the Future Part 2 he had the trailer added as a post credit.
Holden hit it right on the nose. Cap doesn’t change who he is, he doesn’t let everything and everyone around him change his beliefs, morals, and outlooks.
The thing they did wonderfully with Captain America, is that he was writed to be not downgrade to our level, but to inspire us to grow ours at his. Something that not much people understand, because they love characters that are funny, charismatic or had a specific personality that makes them entertaining, unlike Captain America who is someone pure hearted, right and serious, with an unbreakable will strenght who doesn't care what people say about him, he will be steady to do what is always right.
so, in short, not to undermine anyone, but it looks to me (not that I agree or disagree) that Jen needs her characters to have clear flaws to overcome. Not what defines them, but things that can be fixed, improved, changed for the better. And Tony has them in spades. Steve was supposed to be the opposite by default, it's what made him Captain America... I'd advise familiarizing yourself with flat character development arc idea (like Steve, Goku, but also Indiana Jones or James Bond) where a flat character, so by definition a fully developed character that does not change nor needs to change, is thrown into a various set of circumstances and events to react to and impact other characters, rather than develop their own. Hence since this movie every Captain America movie had more developing characters, to play off of Steve and use his unwavering character in full. I'm not saying Steve has zero flaws to explore and fix, he has his fair share of issues to deal with, but they do not impact his own character in any way. And you can see that in Winter Soldier, Age of Ultron, Civil War and Endgame a lot... TL;DR - in my opinion Jen likes round characters more than flat ones because she cares more about personal character development than anything else. Hence Steve is not as valuable of a character in her eyes (so far) as for example Tony or Thor, despite the quality of their personal story and overall plot and elements of their movies...
Yeah flat characters can be fun to see them put into situations that would have most other people compromise, change or be knocked down. And you watch them struggle with that situation and it ultimately leads them to have even more conviction in their values and ideals. They come out stronger, but not changed.
Others have mentioned here the personal growth Cap goes through. I would also like to mention that beyond his strength via the serum and being a "good man"... • He is a *great strategist.* This is seen and alluded to a few times: 1. When he first joins the army as a skinny lad, he's taking out all his books (one of which is about war & strategy I believe) while the other soldiers are horsin' around. 2. After he puts together his team. Utilizing each individual's skills, he employs various and clever methods in taking down Hydra. 3. Ofc, when they're planning their attack on Hydra HQ. • Seen with the above and all other scenes, Cap is a natural and great *leader.* • If anything, his superpower is WILL. Always finding a way and never giving up.
11:05 I love how Steve goes to grab the fence as he's jumping over it. It's the subtle details man. This is what makes the MCU so great. It's the small things that you don't really notice, but if they weren't there it would show.
Great reaction, Jen breaking Holden’s heart with the truth about Cap and Iron Man lol. Definitely agree 100 percent with Jen, cannot wait for the Avengers reaction
the after movie conversation makes me laugh so much....kinda reminds me of a superman or batman character type argument. everyone generally thinks superman is boring because hes to strong but the underlying theme is him staying true and good despite being so strong that no one could stop him
In some ways, I guess Captain America (like Spider-Man) is a wish fulfillment character. The underdog with no advantages finally achieving a position of power and using that to lift other people up. It's a very classic story, but a good one.
@@swanpride Yeah. Is it that bad that some people out there are just simply perfect or aspire to be? At least making films about those kinds of people c an make us look up to them. Technically Bruce Wayne was also never that flawed like iron man. He just had to learn to conquer his fear

"Steve doesn't have any character development." It's not his fault that he started out as a good person. If we give credit to flawed people who turn good, why don't we do the same for "good" people who stay good? Characters don't always need development, if their character is already perfect for their story. You'll see in the 2nd and 3rd movies more clearly, that the story is formed around his perfect character; rather than forcing him to change, the story tests his morals instead.
He does develope But in this movie he has a flat arc because the movie is suppose to show that he's a good guy that stands out in this war. I'm a iron man fan myself, first super hero movie I watched and he's so interesting to watch him in action and develop

I normally could care less about reaction videos but for some reason you two Crack me up, and I honestly enjoy hearing your opinions! Looking forward to avengers next.
I love how you 2 break down with the discussion at the end of the movie very engaging TBH. I want to write down my opinion for you 2 that will help with understanding Captain America for better or worse. 1. Captain America was created in 1941, 20 years before most of the the other Avengers like Iron man & Thor. They are worlds apart socially and what also comics stood for from the 40's golden age(perfect hero's) & 60's silver age(troubled characters). 2. Captain America was written in the comics to help save America and the world from the crisis & urgency of WW2 more significant than just a person wanting to join the military. 3.the first Captain America movie does the original concept of the perfect hero and leader like the he was meant to be in the 40's during WW2 irl. I enjoy the movie for staying true to that. 4. A big favorite point keeps being made for years now with fans or character breakdowns is the character arc or character growth. The truth is imo with certain characters I love, like Captain America is it's ok to already be the best person or already set in the right path. People like that do exist and have existed before. Not everyone has waited till there late 30's or need a dramatic crisis to become a good person or have a happier life. If that were the case for every person ever existed the human race will still be in the Iron Age TBH 5. Now to modernize Captain America and the connection with him joining the Avengers in the MCU & comics during the silver age. The 20+ year gap from 45 and 63 was a drastic change in America than any other 20 year gap in USA history TBH today's modern views primarily started in the 60's. Captain America was "A Man Out of Time" a title of his returning comic book btw. Those 20 years have the equivalency of 70 years like the movie actually is too 1945 to 2011. I wrote alot more than I thought I would sorry but I actually have more to say without getting into movie spoilers and more American history. Nonetheless with these ideas I wanted to share the actual concept of Captain America golden age(perfect hero) & how I relate to him and what he represents 70 years ago & how that actually made me learn of him and see how he is relatable in today's world and my hero views.

You can't say that Steve Rogers didn't change. It was just subtle changes. He became more confident. He realized that sometimes the right thing to do, doesn't always mean following orders.
Disagree.

The UN simply asked that the Avengers take responsibility for their actions; Steve didn't want any part of that - he wanted to do things his way.
Jen found ways to bring the fish into this movie as well
NGL i love it
so, in short, not to undermine anyone, but it looks to me (not that I agree or disagree) that Jen needs her characters to have clear flaws to overcome.

It's not his fault that he started out as a good person. If we give credit to flawed people who turn good, why don't we do the same for "good" people who stay good? Characters don't always need development, if their character is already perfect for their story.
If that were the case for every person ever existed the human race will still be in the Iron Age TBH
Agree.
