As long as you take care of a car you won’t have head gasket issues, or many issues for that matter. Subaru’s are the sort of cars that like to be driven semi-hard, as long as you are not flogging them every day it’s fine. My car literally drives like a new car after recently having a service and it had its timing belt replaced. It’s at 160,000miles/200,000km and runs fine.

I drive an 18 WRX. I have a rear sway bar, a front strut bar, a Cobb, Method wheels, a short shifter, shifter gates, a shift knob, and a muffler delete. The FA20DIT is a great platform as long as you're not shooting for more than 400 WHP. After that it makes more sense to go with an STI, if you're dead set on Subaru. I was dyno'd at 257 WHP and 296 WTQ which I'm very happy with. I like how the car handles mostly anyways. It's great going to the backroads and absolutely clapping my buddies who drive higher power RWD cars. Only guy able to keep up with me on the backroads is my buddy who drives a modded SW20.

For me it's the price of admission for owning a car that's '17 years old. I would buy another one today if I could ($24K). Still enjoy the car every time I sit in the seat.

I got into a 2013 WRX Hatch from an S2000 last year. The WRX drives great and has a ton of power. But the shifter is sloppy and interior feels/sounds cheap (common criticism from what I've read). I've driven older (1992 with 300k miles) civics that feel better put together from an interior stand point. Subaru spend their load on the drivetrain/suspension. Since those gripes are minimal I'm happy with the car and recommend it.

Back in '06 I was shopping for a new car. Like many car folks my age who were raised in a different time, I'm 55yo, I looked at German offerings first. Walked away disappointed. Almost everything I drove felt soft and disconnected, the interiors were laden with electronic gizmos that I did not want - in essence that market lacked a sporting focus. Then someone suggested that I look at the STi and the Evolution. Neither car was on my radar at the time. Drove both, liked the STi, but felt like it needed a little suspension work. Drove the Evo IX and walked away mumbling something about never having driven anything this razor-sharp. Literally nothing else. So that's what I bought. Two of them to be specific. I'm going to be buried in my IX; zero interest in buying another (personal) car. Love it to death! This being said, if the Evolution were not available, I would have definitely bought the '06 STi.

I've had two WRXs, no problems with head gaskets. The first was a 97, pissed off V8s all over the place, but 2nd gear became a problem after hitting a kangaroo in two occasions. the first time the gear selector broke in 3rd gear ( not fun when overtaking a semi ), got it fixed. The second time the reverse idler shaft broke, blocking 3rd and no reverse, got it fixed. 6 months later 2nd gear shattered, no idea why, got it fixed, another 6 months 2nd gear shattered, again no idea, a race driver I met checked how i drove said I was babying it. Went for a few years, decided to give the engine a good service ( check bearings, check turbo etc ) got in car, drove onto the main road ( only 150 kms to go the the shop to do this service ) and 2nd gear exploded again, a long way to go to get it fixed. Got a forester gearbox put in, fine but speedo show 100km/h actual speed 84 km/h, engine revving out early. sold it in 2012 ( 15 yo ) bought a 2011 model. The 1997 was a rally machine, the 2011 model is a yuppie city car, ok at the lights ( not as a drag car ) but no legs for the highway. only had it for 7 years so far. ( almost got the sound system just how I want it ).
