Remember: life is too short and money is too precious to spend it impressing a bunch of people you don't know or even like. I've owned a 2011 and a 2020 WRX and haven't blown up either one. Get some tires, wheels, suspension and a catback (if it really needs it or you really want it) and enjoy the car for what it is. Don't be throwing random bolt-ons around without tunes! That's how you have a bad time.
Stock 2018 no issues and I live in snowey place, had to go with an auto transmission though due to weather so there’s that. Looking at getting a 2022 manual one love these cars!
I'm a owner of 4 subarus and a tech, yes I fix a lot of this problems at my shop but most of the time is the owners fault. you have to take care of your car. I don't run my engine until is warm up, allowing the piston rings to completely expand. Don't turn off my car until the turbo cool down a little bit ( a hot turbo can cook the oil on the hot side and damage the filter inside the turbo feeding line ) Always use synthetic oil and change it at 5,500 miles not 7,500 plus every 3 oil changes I replace my banjo bolts. they have filters inside, if one of them fail is bye bye turbo and engine. If your moods hold up to 500hp, don't max the tune. keep it at 400hp or 450hp. I own 4 subies and 3 of them are over 130k making the highest one 184k problem free.

I just bought an 18 WRX two weeks ago and I must say, I have no regrets, it's a beautiful car and a great daily. In my opinion it is well worth the price, which to most other sports and sport compacts, it's a bang for your buck. And modding it is easy and I think most exterior mods make the car look amazing.

Im definitely one of the poor unfortunate souls that fell in love with Subies at an early age. I am on my 2nd WRX, i dont vape, i mod lightly and drive it daily. Its a great car in terms of reliable when not modded to all hell. Once I can afford another daily, I will be happily buying an older STI, and all the heartache that comes with the build. But hey, I’m addicted and there will always be a Subie in my garage🤷🏾♂️
Changed my motor and turbo before I had a chance to blow them. 471whp still on the stock transmission with no issues. 2017 WRX. Think a lot of hate comes from previous generations. IMO the fa20 was a good step in the right direction.
Bought a 2020 STI this year brand new and would never go back on it. Most fun car I've ever owned and the community is awesome. They hate us cuz they ain' us.
The rep that WRX/STI get for being unreliable usually come from dumbasses who throw tons of power mods at it without proper tune/supporting mods or maintenance. It’s not a Civic that you can clap out, if your gonna do it, do it right. I’m glad those people won’t come back to Subaru, leave them to those who know what they are doing.
51 in April, it doesn't get easier, no, but you do get used to it. I also own an '18 WRX. It's an ideal, for me, Winter commuter and dog hauler. It's cheap enough to not hate throwing I-75 at it, fun out of the box, more so with a little light modding, and leaves a lot of room in the budget for the other car(s). If I had to have one car, something very similar would be likely, and there's not a lot of manual and AWD to choose from.

Also they are not usually the "fastest" they are usually the slowest with the most exterior mods. Sure you might see a fast one once or twice in your lifetime but don't kid yourself by saying people hate them because they are better.
I used to hate on Civics and now I just don't care. They can be good looking, they can be fast, and they can be reliable. It's just a pain in the ass to find one that hasn't been treated like shit.

Your definitely right about being hard to find one that wasn't beat (which goes the same with wrx's and any other tuner desired cars). Fast, reliable, and good looking: when you say those words I think everyone can agree that the car that comes to mind is definitely not a civic, hell, even when saying those words on their own a civic isn't the car that comes to mind (unless your talking stock then a civic is the first car that comes to mind for lasting a nuclear blast).

@@udc_monster5846 I had a friend that had a 2011 WRX STI. He had it stock for a while then he tuned it and put a custom exhaust on it. It started to turn into an absolute POS.
Honestly the wrx's biggest flaw is the owners. Hard to tell how reliable a car actually is when 80+% of the market is full of 16-21 year olds that redline and clutch dump at every stoplight, slap on mods with no tune or just trust their cobb "stage 2" is going to hold up on a 160k beat to death original engine 😂
@@jameswilson8907 Yeah ive got a 99 WRX from the motherland with 212k kms, timing belt and headgasket done at 150k for peace of mind. No mods on it besides bigger intercooler from a bugeye just to help on the summer days. Doesn't get beat on and it runs like a champ, and doesnt burn any oil at all or anything. Probably most reliable vehicle I have owned.
I have a 2005 Legacy 2.5 GT wagon, limited: black on black. Awesome car. Never abused. Has only seen one winter. Finally hit 100,000 miles a few weeks ago. Yes, a 2005.
Honestly the bad wrap is like 80% from terrible owners and 20% on Subaru themselves. The cars are great if you treat them right, like any brand there's always exceptions and ones that blow stock DD status too. But Subaru definitely could also innovate/improve more, hopefully we see this in the next STI as a good sign of things to come, unlike the BRZ and 2015+ WRXs. I personally love my 19 WRX and it is SO fun to drive, but I also think about it and care for it without going overboard. Here's to a long, healthy life!
My mum just got a new WRX and despite having a perfect no accident history and not a single speeding ticket to her name, the first insurance company we called straight up said "we don't insure that car"
There are way better cars that cost less money that are way more worth building and reliable too. Important to mention they look way better too. Subarus are so overrated.

You're right about everything, except I suspect the reliability is either mostly, or exacerbated by the demographic buying these cars- if you go to a FB group for WRXs, you'll see what cesspool festers around these cars, treating them like ass during their least responsible driving years...
As the proud owner of a 1992 wrx. My car will be 29 years old as of november. The funniest part of the impreza wrx in the states is that the engine got worse. My car hasnt blown 1 headgasket yet. That is thanks to the closed deck block features in the early years of the wrx first 2. This engine is by far the most beefy engine subaru has made up to date. And can take 600+ hp stock block.
Bought myself an sti not long ago and i like it, havent run into issues yet but personally on the 15+ wrx/sti i think the interiors do look pretty decent for a sports sedan
I’ve been able to drive a couple wrxs and a sti over the last few years. I love how they handle and the transmission feels really good to me.. I’m currently saving up to buy one but this video is kinda discouraging lol
Bought one of the first WRX in Atlanta in '02. Owned it for 17 years , 10 years no issues. Last seven had some but I thought it's just the price of admission (208K miles). Some spirited driving but never hammered. Not modified, stock remap, and had a log with every light bulb, wiper blade and oil change. Bought a '05, so there. A shout out to All Pro Subaru here in Alhparetta did the work for the cars in Baby Driver, solid shop.
My daily is a 2001 Subaru Impreza 2.5rs and I have no idea what you're talking about bro.. My babies reliable, still has the stock engine with 180k, gears don't grind, I've literally never had any issues with her, shes still running strong and looking beautiful!!
@@deej628 TGVD, EGRD, Cobb intake, GrimmSpeed TMIC, GS Charge pipe, GS catted J pipe, stock exhaust, GS 3 port Boost controller, IAG AOS, AEM water Methanol kit and a few DYNO Protunes from Simple Performance. I may have missed something, but that should be everything power/reliability related. The water methanol helps to clean the valves and prevent KNOCK.
I live in Spokane and WRXs are everywhere. Mine blew it's engine 5 days after I bought it. I suspect the person before me was changing the oil and saw metal flakes and immediately went and traded it in before the engine went. The car is really good now that the engine is good to go. I have a ton of fun with it, and I'm bone stock because I don't trust mods on subarus. Only thing I'll do is a muffler delete for the subie rumble

Before anyone goes and calls the WRX 'unreliable', there's a 2015 WRX out there that's at 217,000+ miles, with the throwout bearing being the only replacement. (Besides consumables of course) The fa20 is happy with 275-300whp and a perfect tune by someone like Ron Watson.
I get jokes a lot from people, but in the 2 years since I’ve had my WRX Hatch I’ve not had any actual “hate”, and generally everyone is super nice, the Subaru community is the best I’ve been a part of too!
Bought my one and only WRX in 2012, and I've owned it ever since... On my second engine with no modifications. When the motor blew, Subaru paid for a new one! I've been a believer since-- I think the culture Subaru has created through good service is responsible for a lot of the fanboys. I agree we deserve a nice interior and some power upgrades... ffs-- It hurts knowing you'll get dragged by any modern car with a V6.
Yeah, a bigger motor to replace when it breaks, and it will. At least those extra. 4 liters will give the mechanics a mild increase in work load, to offset calories.
i have a 2015 WRX pushing 410whp stock block stock trans and it's been at that level since 40k miles and now I'm at 130k miles still no issues, regular maintenance and it runs like a top :)
I have a 14 year old stock STI Limited, bought new, now with 130K miles, and had no issues with it, just doing the standard recommend maintenance. Insurance is cheap, not sure where all this is coming from. Live in Wisconsin, pushing it frequently in the snow and off road, love this car and one of the best cars I’ve ever owned
My first car was a 2.2ts impreza 2000 back in 2009 and i worked for subaru as a tech for 5 years in eastern Canada, i liked them so much, i've owned around 10 subarus so far. They are really good cars for winter and will start up every morning BUT you will always have problems popping up one after the other, if you don't fix it right away, they will stack up, the mpgs for the fuel is horrible, like to understeer and brake lines/u frame/shock towers likes to rust and next thing you know, there's holes everywhere. Somehow they still manage to keep the resell value so high as a used car no i don't vape/smoke and i dont own any subaru for now :P
I'm a Honda Civic guy for 30yrs and just bought my first Subaru 2021 WRX premium. I love it as it reminds me of a Civic Si with more power control and feel. Yes I had to update the icon wipers, led lights throughout and ceramic paint protection. Running standard 87 gas. It seems great very close to a 2022 29k Civic si. It's very comparable with more horses, heated windshield. It runs great better than any Honda I've owned.
The r32 is the one with the racing pedigree. The r34 is basically the kim kardashian of JDM cars, and the r33 is the one that's hated on the most, but isn't getting any cheaper
R34 isn't an economy car, what's under the skin is what people don't see, don't be blinded by the interior. That is why people love them and they command high value
I'm an old fart who bought a 2019 WRX new. Haven't given it a single mod, and am doing oil changes more frequently than recommended. I suspect much of the reputation for unreliability of these cars is the culture of sticking ill-thought out mods onto them and then blaming the car when they blow up. It should come as no shock that a small displacement, turbo charged, high output engine is already highly stressed, and if you add to that you are just going to break things unless you do it smart AND spend top dollar on high quality parts AND more frequent maintenance.
I’m lovin mine. 04’ Forester XT, 165k miles, normal 100k maintenance, but original head gaskets and no knock. I have done some things to it but the trick is to not red line these engines lol. Or wide open throttle under 3k rpm. And it’s a car meant for carving, not launching.
A lot of people see them as like a type of “you couldn’t afford the higher tier car”. This is super common now though, like people with the Honda Civic si, people say they couldn’t afford the type r, the railliart, they couldn’t afford the evo, Veloster turbo, they couldn’t afford the Veloster N, and so much more

Had a 17 wrx limitted. Loved it - so got a 2019 STI to get more track/hardcore. Leaving it stock as they dyno stock at the wheels 285...so they make more than stated...... Great car. Drives like a 911 (the older, smaller, lighter ones...the better ones...). Never had any hate...only compliments. From BMW and Porsche guys... Mine is low profile (no wing)....that makes a little bit of difference I think as it is less "in your face" race car..... No vaping on my end. Wonderful car. 285 at the wheels is plenty for legal fun......on back roads.
If you're taking anything twisty, and BRZ will smoke your ass. Swap out the shitty stock Michelins for something decent and holy shit they take corners hard and fast.

The brz is a nice car and all, but so is the Ralliart with its AWD, it's like a fly on shit in terms of traction, and once you come out of the corner, the Ralliart bolts thanks to the turbo. I have a Scion FR-S with fa20 boxer engine and I think the drama that the boxer engine gives no other engines give sounds sick and and the subie rumble OMGG I love it
Had a WRX and STi both new . They are sooooo nice . Zero problems and the service department is legit. I currently have a brand new STI (2 months old ) on Advan tc4 / federal tires , carbon hood and tomei exhaust. The car is world rally blue . No regrets
My insurance on my '06 Sti is actually really reasonable I dunno what you're talking about. My insurance went from $99/month with 2 cars full coverage to $120/month for 3 cars when I bought my Subaru.
to be honest, I'm on my 4th, two had over 100k miles.. I've never blown an engine. I've had an 05, 2010, 2012, and 2019.. currently drive the 2019 and my girlfriend drives the 2012. I don't overdo mods, usually just exhaust and some aesthetics and typically don't gun it. I can't stop buying them though lol
I own a 2004 blobeye impreza 1.6 ts. Yes it only has 95 hp, but it is economic as f, prefers high rpm's(2.5 k eco 5 k=all valves open, like a knock off vtec) In greece they even made a turbo'd alternative with 180 hp to compensate the insane emmisions tax on the wrx This is a proper first car, where it feels great to drive, Goes from silent econobox to screaming sportiness on the high rpm and rocks the blobeye look excluding the hoodscoop. Oh, and it does not eat headgaskets for breakfast, lunch and dinner Base models ain't always wack
I have an Impreza, love it. I agree the transmission is probably my least favorite thing on the car. The interior is something I’d like to see touched up a bit too. For the price range and stock performance, a Stinger GT might beat it out a little?
I own a 2019 Impreza touring and I love everything about it. fun to drive, the subie grumble, the ride/handling, the styling, the interior, and of course the symmetrical AWD just plows through snow
@@bassboostedhiphop7657 the head gasket issues are pretty much sorted out on the FA20. One thing that could still become an issue, though, is ringland failure. This is more likely to happen on poorly modified, tuned and maintained FA20s, though.
Our hood scoops are actually for quick reloading headgaskets.

Word, I had 3rd Gen that was burning 1 Qt per 500 miles. Luckily someone hit me and totaled it out before I had to get the engine rebuilt.

@@phillyguerrilla I don't think people give 1/2 a shit how fast a civic is. No one likes seeing a civic with cut springs and cheap camber looking like a mario kart anti gravity kart... Also they are not usually the "fastest" they are usually the slowest with the most exterior mods. Sure you might see a fast one once or twice in your lifetime but don't kid yourself by saying people hate them because they are better.

Your definitely right about being hard to find one that wasn't beat (which goes the same with wrx's and any other tuner desired cars). Fast, reliable, and good looking: when you say those words I think everyone can agree that the car that comes to mind is definitely not a civic, hell, even when saying those words on their own a civic isn't the car that comes to mind (unless your talking stock then a civic is the first car that comes to mind for lasting a nuclear blast).

Honestly the wrx's biggest flaw is the owners. Hard to tell how reliable a car actually is when 80+% of the market is full of 16-21 year olds that redline and clutch dump at every stoplight, slap on mods with no tune or just trust their cobb "stage 2" is going to hold up on a 160k beat to death original engine 😂

@@jameswilson8907 Yeah ive got a 99 WRX from the motherland with 212k kms, timing belt and headgasket done at 150k for peace of mind. No mods on it besides bigger intercooler from a bugeye just to help on the summer days. Doesn't get beat on and it runs like a champ, and doesnt burn any oil at all or anything. Probably most reliable vehicle I have owned.
I have a 2005 Legacy 2.5 GT wagon, limited: black on black. Awesome car. Never abused. Has only seen one winter. Finally hit 100,000 miles a few weeks ago. Yes, a 2005.
I love my 11 WRX hatch. It’s fun. Eventually I’ll get a few more mods and finally do my wheels and suspension.

Honestly the bad wrap is like 80% from terrible owners and 20% on Subaru themselves. The cars are great if you treat them right, like any brand there's always exceptions and ones that blow stock DD status too. But Subaru definitely could also innovate/improve more, hopefully we see this in the next STI as a good sign of things to come, unlike the BRZ and 2015+ WRXs. I personally love my 19 WRX and it is SO fun to drive, but I also think about it and care for it without going overboard. Here's to a long, healthy life!
My mum just got a new WRX and despite having a perfect no accident history and not a single speeding ticket to her name, the first insurance company we called straight up said "we don't insure that car"

You're right about everything, except I suspect the reliability is either mostly, or exacerbated by the demographic buying these cars- if you go to a FB group for WRXs, you'll see what cesspool festers around these cars, treating them like ass during their least responsible driving years...
As the proud owner of a 1992 wrx. My car will be 29 years old as of november. The funniest part of the impreza wrx in the states is that the engine got worse. My car hasnt blown 1 headgasket yet. That is thanks to the closed deck block features in the early years of the wrx first 2. This engine is by far the most beefy engine subaru has made up to date. And can take 600+ hp stock block.

Bought one of the first WRX in Atlanta in '02. Owned it for 17 years , 10 years no issues. Last seven had some but I thought it's just the price of admission (208K miles). Some spirited driving but never hammered. Not modified, stock remap, and had a log with every light bulb, wiper blade and oil change. Bought a '05, so there. A shout out to All Pro Subaru here in Alhparetta did the work for the cars in Baby Driver, solid shop.
My daily is a 2001 Subaru Impreza 2.5rs and I have no idea what you're talking about bro.. My babies reliable, still has the stock engine with 180k, gears don't grind, I've literally never had any issues with her, shes still running strong and looking beautiful!!

Got an 2019 wrx making 322 to the wheels with 20 psi all bolt on with a conservative tune. Great car with no issues to speak of.

@@deej628 TGVD, EGRD, Cobb intake, GrimmSpeed TMIC, GS Charge pipe, GS catted J pipe, stock exhaust, GS 3 port Boost controller, IAG AOS, AEM water Methanol kit and a few DYNO Protunes from Simple Performance. I may have missed something, but that should be everything power/reliability related. The water methanol helps to clean the valves and prevent KNOCK.
I live in Spokane and WRXs are everywhere. Mine blew it's engine 5 days after I bought it. I suspect the person before me was changing the oil and saw metal flakes and immediately went and traded it in before the engine went. The car is really good now that the engine is good to go. I have a ton of fun with it, and I'm bone stock because I don't trust mods on subarus. Only thing I'll do is a muffler delete for the subie rumble

My insurance didn’t distinguish Impreza, Impreza WRX, and Impreza WRX STI. So my insurance company thought I drove an “Impreza” 😂.

Before anyone goes and calls the WRX 'unreliable', there's a 2015 WRX out there that's at 217,000+ miles, with the throwout bearing being the only replacement. (Besides consumables of course) The fa20 is happy with 275-300whp and a perfect tune by someone like Ron Watson.
I've got nothing but complements with my WRX. It's all stock as well. Hell, I just got it because it's a fun car to drive the kids to school in.
I get jokes a lot from people, but in the 2 years since I’ve had my WRX Hatch I’ve not had any actual “hate”, and generally everyone is super nice, the Subaru community is the best I’ve been a part of too!

Bought my one and only WRX in 2012, and I've owned it ever since... On my second engine with no modifications. When the motor blew, Subaru paid for a new one! I've been a believer since-- I think the culture Subaru has created through good service is responsible for a lot of the fanboys. I agree we deserve a nice interior and some power upgrades... ffs-- It hurts knowing you'll get dragged by any modern car with a V6.

I have a 2017 wrx with a stage 1+ tune, big sf intake and a muffler delete. 52k miles and still going strong. I beat the piss out of it too lol.

i have a 2015 WRX pushing 410whp stock block stock trans and it's been at that level since 40k miles and now I'm at 130k miles still no issues, regular maintenance and it runs like a top :)

I have a 14 year old stock STI Limited, bought new, now with 130K miles, and had no issues with it, just doing the standard recommend maintenance. Insurance is cheap, not sure where all this is coming from. Live in Wisconsin, pushing it frequently in the snow and off road, love this car and one of the best cars I’ve ever owned
I have a 2014 wrx. The reason everyone has such a loud exhaust is to cover up the dash rattle. Speaking from experience.
My first car was a 2.2ts impreza 2000 back in 2009 and i worked for subaru as a tech for 5 years in eastern Canada, i liked them so much, i've owned around 10 subarus so far. They are really good cars for winter and will start up every morning BUT you will always have problems popping up one after the other, if you don't fix it right away, they will stack up, the mpgs for the fuel is horrible, like to understeer and brake lines/u frame/shock towers likes to rust and next thing you know, there's holes everywhere. Somehow they still manage to keep the resell value so high as a used car

I'm a Honda Civic guy for 30yrs and just bought my first Subaru 2021 WRX premium. I love it as it reminds me of a Civic Si with more power control and feel. Yes I had to update the icon wipers, led lights throughout and ceramic paint protection. Running standard 87 gas. It seems great very close to a 2022 29k Civic si. It's very comparable with more horses, heated windshield. It runs great better than any Honda I've owned.

I'm an old fart who bought a 2019 WRX new. Haven't given it a single mod, and am doing oil changes more frequently than recommended. I suspect much of the reputation for unreliability of these cars is the culture of sticking ill-thought out mods onto them and then blaming the car when they blow up. It should come as no shock that a small displacement, turbo charged, high output engine is already highly stressed, and if you add to that you are just going to break things unless you do it smart AND spend top dollar on high quality parts AND more frequent maintenance.

I’m lovin mine. 04’ Forester XT, 165k miles, normal 100k maintenance, but original head gaskets and no knock. I have done some things to it but the trick is to not red line these engines lol. Or wide open throttle under 3k rpm.

A lot of people see them as like a type of “you couldn’t afford the higher tier car”. This is super common now though, like people with the Honda Civic si, people say they couldn’t afford the type r, the railliart, they couldn’t afford the evo, Veloster turbo, they couldn’t afford the Veloster N, and so much more

Had a 17 wrx limitted. Loved it - so got a 2019 STI to get more track/hardcore. Leaving it stock as they dyno stock at the wheels 285...so they make more than stated...... Great car. Drives like a 911 (the older, smaller, lighter ones...the better ones...). Never had any hate...only compliments. From BMW and Porsche guys... Mine is low profile (no wing)....that makes a little bit of difference I think as it is less "in your face" race car.....

The brz is a nice car and all, but so is the Ralliart with its AWD, it's like a fly on shit in terms of traction, and once you come out of the corner, the Ralliart bolts thanks to the turbo. Had a WRX and STi both new . They are sooooo nice . Zero problems and the service department is legit. I currently have a brand new STI (2 months old ) on Advan tc4 / federal tires , carbon hood and tomei exhaust. The car is world rally blue . No regrets

My insurance on my '06 Sti is actually really reasonable I dunno what you're talking about. My insurance went from $99/month with 2 cars full coverage to $120/month for 3 cars when I bought my Subaru.

to be honest, I'm on my 4th, two had over 100k miles.. I've never blown an engine. I've had an 05, 2010, 2012, and 2019.. currently drive the 2019 and my girlfriend drives the 2012.
I don't overdo mods, usually just exhaust and some aesthetics and typically don't gun it.

I own a 2004 blobeye impreza 1.6 ts. Yes it only has 95 hp, but it is economic as f, prefers high rpm's(2.5 k eco 5 k=all valves open, like a knock off vtec)
In greece they even made a turbo'd alternative with 180 hp to compensate the insane emmisions tax on the wrx
This is a proper first car, where it feels great to drive, Goes from silent econobox to screaming sportiness on the high rpm and rocks the blobeye look excluding the hoodscoop.
Oh, and it does not eat headgaskets for breakfast, lunch and dinner

I own a 2019 Impreza touring and I love everything about it. fun to drive, the subie grumble, the ride/handling, the styling, the interior, and of course the symmetrical AWD just plows through snow

@@bassboostedhiphop7657 the head gasket issues are pretty much sorted out on the FA20. One thing that could still become an issue, though, is ringland failure. This is more likely to happen on poorly modified, tuned and maintained FA20s, though.
Subarus are not only cop magnets but also europe car magnets too every time i look back i see one that wanna race.
I get nothing but compliments on mine, honestly don’t see much hate at all, even online. Honda is a different story lol
