    I actually found one of these In my garden once when I was 6. I looked at its belly and I was like oh woah she’s pregnant, I made her a pirate ship out of cardboard to live on and I named her rapunzle. A few days later there were 100s of little babies just crawling all over. They are my fav bugs still now

    May I humbly suggest Armadillo officinalis? They are quite large, look like tiny busses and become spherical and hiss when you disturb them. They take some time to grow up and reproduce, but studies suggest they might get quite a lot older than your average isopod, and that’s pretty cool if you ask me!

    • @victoriameredith629
      @victoriameredith629 3 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Can you actually hear them hiss? Because that would be kind of cool. Except then I’d feel like a jerk for scaring them.

    I got curious and looked into whether giant isopods are difficult to keep and found that the Florida Keys Aquarium has an open air tank where guests are encouraged to put their hand in and interact with giant isopods. All that seems to be required is 50 degree water and one would assume some specific water conditions. They don't seem to have to be kept at any specific pressure.

    I looove isopods. The ones I have currently are zebra, clown, reds and dairy cow Isopods! Ones I recommend (and that I also personally want to get in the future) are Armadillidium magic potions and Porcellio hoffmanseggi. Magic potions are very pretty and breed quite well. The Hoffs can grow to nearly 2 inches or more and they also show some parental instincts, they will guard the babies after they are born and even bring them food. Such fascinating little creatures! On a semi related note, check out Pill Millipedes! Due to Convergent Evolution they evolved the exact same defense as armadillidium species entirely separate from them! They aren't even closely related! Bugs are so neat.

      Also I recommend giving them a source of calcium like cuttle fish bone. It helps them to molt easier so they grow quicker and start breeding sooner. :)

    I’ve got “dairy cow” isopods! I just noticed this week that the very smallest baby podlings can escape their exoterra terrarium and they dry up and die in the barren wasteland that is my dresser top 😢 Idk how to stop it. My culture is still going strong but it’s sad to think of the podlings getting lost and dying of exposure

      @KitteyWolf 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      have you tried to use a very thin mesh[like mosquito netting] or cheesecloth to cover their airholes? it should still let enough air through. but should hopefully be small enough holes to not let the babies out

    Some more stuff about rolly pollies, since I've seen some comments about them (not an expert, just good at using google). What most people know as rolly pollies are also know as pill bugs, or woodlice, part of a family known as Armadillidiidae, and they can roll themselves into wee little balls when threatened. It's called conglobation, and is shared by all critters in that family. And yes, they are isopods, but not all isopods roll themselves up when threatened.
