    I looove isopods. The ones I have currently are zebra, clown, reds and dairy cow Isopods! Ones I recommend (and that I also personally want to get in the future) are Armadillidium magic potions and Porcellio hoffmanseggi. Magic potions are very pretty and breed quite well. The Hoffs can grow to nearly 2 inches or more and they also show some parental instincts, they will guard the babies after they are born and even bring them food. Such fascinating little creatures! On a semi related note, check out Pill Millipedes! Due to Convergent Evolution they evolved the exact same defense as armadillidium species entirely separate from them! They aren't even closely related! Bugs are so neat.

    • @doogooden3047
      @doogooden3047 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also I recommend giving them a source of calcium like cuttle fish bone. It helps them to molt easier so they grow quicker and start breeding sooner. :)

    I’ve got “dairy cow” isopods! I just noticed this week that the very smallest baby podlings can escape their exoterra terrarium and they dry up and die in the barren wasteland that is my dresser top 😢 Idk how to stop it. My culture is still going strong but it’s sad to think of the podlings getting lost and dying of exposure

      have you tried to use a very thin mesh[like mosquito netting] or cheesecloth to cover their airholes? it should still let enough air through. but should hopefully be small enough holes to not let the babies out

    i just recently started collecting and breeding wild types. i have a lot of calico looking ones now, some that look almost like zebras, some red, some brown, some orange, some shiny black, some dull gray. such a great mix from my own backyard! saved them from the firewood pile haha. also got a couple dwarfs and HUGE ones including something ive never seen before. was a dark gray, about a half inch long, and its head was almost its own separate piece of the isopod. it was like 3 skinnier section of armor and then its head. almost like a centipede head on an isopod body. super cool!

    wow. in Utah, we do call them potato bugs, but since my mom grew up in Virginia, i call them rollie pollies. the ones here are just plain black/grey, but i did find a really cool colony when my parents were gardening there was a huge pile if dirt and i found there was a ton of them. i grabbed a container and put leaf litter and dirt and sticks then a bit of water. i grabbed as many as I could find then took them to the front of my house where a bunch of step able plants were and let them go. i found that the biggest was half black and half grey. it was REALLY cool.

    I got curious and looked into whether giant isopods are difficult to keep and found that the Florida Keys Aquarium has an open air tank where guests are encouraged to put their hand in and interact with giant isopods. All that seems to be required is 50 degree water and one would assume some specific water conditions. They don't seem to have to be kept at any specific pressure.
