Huh. . . I never really saw it as a necessity/something the fish would like, I always just used it as another decoration tool. Just like the bedding for my guinea pigs' cage didn't /need/ to be pink, but I liked pink so that's the kind I bought.

It can be a necessity if you keep a planted tank- but then again, you wouldn't be using gravel, you'd be using sand or a special fertilized substrate :)

"Short neck" is probably a direct comparison to the Eastern (and other) Long Necked turtles, a very common species here in Aus :)

Ugh, it feels like just yesterday I was waiting for Snake Discovery to reach one mil and now they're at two. It's been such an honor to watch this channel for a year and grow with them. They are so cute. I have a western painted turtle ( littlefoot ) and a red earred slider ( Petri) that share a 40 gallon currently and both are special needs. Little foot has a bad front foot and Petri was born with only 1 eye. Both surprisingly do great together though they are going to need an upgraded tank soon.

I'm glad you're keeping them in a decently sized enclosure (well, relative to the babies; once they grow they'll *definitely* want the space your friend's turtle pond offers!) for the week you have them!
Edit: personally for fishkeeping I prefer biological filtration, but I also realize that you're not going to have the time to develop a beneficial bacteria culture in a week.
