Scientists have put wheels in the wild with cameras, and have found that animals such as rats, hamsters, mice, etc. all use them. The only idea they could think of is they just simply enjoy doing it. These animals have never been captive or have seen a wheel before.
This is amazing, the best hamster video I've ever seen. It really showcases how these animals are equipped by birth with all the skills they need to deal with the world.

This was INCREDIBLE, you have OUTDONE yourself Dr. Plants!!!! This is so RARE to see a domestic animal to become the ULTIMATE HUNTER! Just for a feedback: HAMSTERS LOVE TO RUN, so having a wheel it is a MUST.

Honestly, this video is a great demonstration of hamster habitat needs. Usually a traditionally healthy habitat would look natural like the one you made (especially the foraging and scents part), but would still have key elements for domestic hamsters like large wheels, hidey-homes and sand/dust baths.
I work at petsmart and never recommend those cages. If someone wants to purchase it to get a hamster i won’t sell it to them! Some places do, but usually we get support from management not to! If you want to give your hamsters protein without getting real worms or roaches I always recommend dried mealworms. Giving a couple a day is perfect
@@weylinkrentz8481 Hamsters are known for the numerous ways they've died, like getting thrown at a wall or running into fireplaces... It's basically become a joke that no hamster can have a peaceful death.
That plastic cage from Tiny Tales isn’t suitable for hamsters as you saw. It's best to use a glass or proper wire cage with plenty of space for them to move around comfortably, at least 450 square inches of floor space. For bedding, avoid cedar or pine as they can harm hamsters. Instead, opt for paper-based bedding like Carefresh or aspen shavings. Make sure to provide a wheel that's at least 8 inches in diameter for proper exercise, and a hiding spot for them to feel secure. I use a wooden wheel that’s gentle on their feet. Proper ventilation and regular cleaning are also essential for their health! Tho, using a plastic cage temporarily while you're cleaning a larger cage or like you did Dr Plants, it can be fine for short periods. *Just wanted to write this on here, cya.*
I get the videos intention but hamsters 100% have all of their natural instincts. Pet stores lie about hamster care in order to target children into buying an animal that has a short-life span in a tiny enclosure, they do not care about their quality of life; pet store hamsters are also bred incredibly cruelly. An ideal hamster set-up and quite frankly the bare minimum would consist of 800-1000 sqr inches of uninterrupted floor space, 30cm of paper or aspen bedding, a 10-12 inch wheel and forage, sprays, tons of hide-aways and clutter, including ceramic, cork logs, branches etc... AND a sand bath (NOT a dust bath). Hamsters diets should consist of a variety of seeds and vegetables and fruit but less frequently. They're omnivores so you can also give them plain cooked chicken and dried mealworms. Hamsters should NOT be kept in pairs, they're solitary animals in captivity as they're VERY territorial skittish so they will hurt/kill each other, even by accident, one type of dwarf hamster can live together in the wild as they have enough room to escape and aren't trapped in a cage. Hamsters should NOT use plastic tunnels, they have poor ventilation and their feet can get stuck in the tiny holes, if their cheeks are full of food they can also get stuck in these tunnels, if given appropriate bedding depth they wont need these tunnels anyway. Hamsters should NOT use hamster balls; Hamsters have poor vision and rely on their sense of smell. In a hamster ball, hamsters cannot smell. Similarly to the tunnels the ventilation is poor and the holes can get their feet stuck which in some cases has led to amputation. When a hamster is in a ball it 'looks' like they're enjoying it because they're rolling around but in reality they're just trying to escape and its a ball so of course when they move it'll move. Hamsters are terrible for children as they are skittish, fragile and they're nocturnal so it isn't likely that the children will see the hamster. This may lead to a frustrated child waking up the hamster but this is terrible for the hamster, never wake a hamster up from its sleep. One more important and interesting note: be WARNED, hamsters DO NOT HIBERNATE. This type of 'hibernation' is called Torpor and it is FORCED. Torpor occurs when a hamsters environment is either too cold of they lack resources, the hamsters body is quite literally shutting down and going to sleep to preserve energy. It is IMPORTANT to wake them up, but you have to do it gradually as if they wake up too quickly or their body temperature changes drastically they will go into shock and die, start by warming them up with your own body heat, then a warm towel, give them lukewarm sugar water through a syringe for added electrolytes. If you are confused wether your hamster is in TORPOR or DEAD, take it to the vet OR if you're quite certain its dead but are still a little anxious, after a few hours its body should go STIFF. If the hamsters body is still limp, do not dispose of it, take it to the vet to make sure its dead; its not that expensive to get a hamster confirmed dead/cremated and most vets will do it. (Hamsters need to go to exotic vets usually, but when my hamster passed away recently at a very old age, we took her to our local vet and they were kind enough to cremate her). Be responsible everyone, do your research before getting an animal; if you aren't prepared to give them appropriate care, get a different animal that you can care for. Sincerely, somebody who knows a lot about hamster care.
I used to have rats and there cage was half my bedroom, they loved to ride on my shoulder and i would go the the grocery with them since there was no ban on taking a rat only dogs. Eventually they banned the rat too but everyone loves to see me walk around with a rat on my shoulder. Im a cat owner now but i remember my rat days fondly. 🐀🐀
Considering that hamsters haven't even been domesticated for a 100yrs yet i would say yeah they still have pretty much all their natural instincts. In the wild they run 5-10 miles an night, in captivity they run on average on their wheel 5 miles a night. The wheel that came with the death trap cage is too small for her, she needs her back to be straight not curved. I recommend a 8in wheel for her.
Did you keep her? She's adorable. If you did and you want to make her life better, change the wheel for the bigger one (at least 20cm in diameter). I almost cried when I saw her going into the tank. Thats so sad that that many hamsters have to live like that in those small cages without ability to dig, with too small wheels what is really bad for they backbone, and with chemical food withous any seeds and protein (its like we were eating only fast food the whole life). Tysm for your hard work, you made her life so much better.
So something to note is that pelleted food like that is actually formulated for their health to prevent them from getting too much fat in their diet, seeds are very high in fat so they're great as treats but Timothy hay is a very important source of nutrition for them, along with protein in the form of bugs, and fiber and vitamins in fresh fruits and veg
@@OllieOxyn nah pelleted food is completely unnecessary. Good quality feed (with protein like dead worms), herbs and sometimes alittle bit fresh fruits or veggies are just fine.

That's what has always bothered me with chain pet stores they tend to sell tiny cages hamsters are used to traveling miles every night before coming back to the burrow it really doesn't give them the space they need. Hi
09:15 ... hey, we all love going to the gym, right? She has to keep up her cardio in some manner, after all. Her whole life that wheel has been her means to keep fit. It's all she's known, so of course that's where she burns off stress and loneliness.
Yeah. I wish he would get a friend for her now. Goodness knows there’s enough room for two!
Whos gonna tell them

@@gorgelopez113 If it was a male, they would m8, and then make too many babies. They might even eat the babies lol. Maybe the husband later on too, just for funzies
And need not any animal doc and any syringes he has in his pharma bag!
What a wonderful cage set-up, and the hamster is very intelligent! Excellent presentation!
yeah installed that light in the burrow it dug like a boss.
If you enjoyed this you should check out slivki show a lot of his channel is showcasing hamsters in more natural habitats
Hamsters are the perfect example of a kid we really want to protect without ever realizing they're beyond capable to do things on their own
Overprotecting them only hurts them in their development and life skills
Testing an animals limits while keeping them safe is what everyone should do
I assumed this was gonna be like one of those awful hamster obstacle course videos but he seems to actually care for this hamster! It’s such a cool video
testing their natural insticts is what is gonna make them self dependant , while they have babies with a mate that lived in the same conditions
Why should everyone test an animals limits
@@KORRE760 I don't think op meant literally, but generally all animals need some sort of mental/physical stimulation to be happy
It's why if you get a high energy dog, but give them no place to release that energy they will destroy a couch. It's the same idea with humans, without some kind of physical activity or mental stimulation we get very bored and it can lead to depression!
This is TOO GOOD to be free on youtube. i wish i could turn back time and watch it again for the first time. 10/10 video you are amazing!!!!

Labeling that as "ideal for hamsters" should be illegal. Great video, again I don't know how you are able to film half of these shots.. yeah that doesn't really say much because I'm not the smartest but I do know filming and editing this is very very hard!
indeed!
Love your videos, you make me laugh all the time!
I dunno, ive got a jar that might just fit ;)
Ikr it's so tiny, my cage was sadly too small too but still like 3 times bigger than that thing
Most of the video is staged is how
Honestly, this video is a great demonstration of hamster habitat needs. Usually a traditionally healthy habitat would look natural like the one you made (especially the foraging and scents part), but would still have key elements for domestic hamsters like large wheels, hidey-homes and sand/dust baths.
This might be the best video ive ever seen. What a journey to go on. It didn't feel like 10 minutes!
the plastic pink wheel in the natural habitat is such a funny contrast
I work at petsmart and never recommend those cages. If someone wants to purchase it to get a hamster i won’t sell it to them! Some places do, but usually we get support from management not to! If you want to give your hamsters protein without getting real worms or roaches I always recommend dried mealworms. Giving a couple a day is perfect
Never thought I would be so deeply invested in a hamsters quest but here I am
Preslatko i impresivno! Hamsterovi instinkti za preživljavanje su izvanredni, a ovi testovi su i zabavni i edukativni. 🐹👏
I’m so happy I randomly found this on TH-cam. The laughs, the joy, the discovery. Such a breath of fresh air. Thank you 😂
A suprising moment! The hamster didn't mysteriously die in a brutal way!
yet.
It wont, trust me. They instinct is suprising... Hamsters are much more brutal than they look...
Died from exhuastion from jumping to much
Why would the hamster die?
*Just wanted to write this on here, cya.*
all true
Isn't there also a specific wheel design ? Like, if it has empty spaces between the bars, I remember hearing they could trip and get seriously hurt.
@@laurelynYeah, tho it should also be big enough. They could bend their back if it’s too small
@@birb70 I didn't have that piece of knowledge and it's an important one, thx
the new minimum is actually 800 square inches!
This movie was a masterpiece, worthy of the grand halls of our eternal memories! please make more!
Thank youuu

@JackRobertson-op3ib Do you realize what complex animals rodents are?
I used to have rats and there cage was half my bedroom, they loved to ride on my shoulder and i would go the the grocery with them since there was no ban on taking a rat only dogs.
I absolutely agree-she is already equipped with a much larger wheel, and I could see a difference immediately!
The end made me laugh so hard, I just knew she was headed back to that wheel 😂😂😂 this is such a fantastic video!! Thank you for putting it together 😁
Don’t worry! I absolutely switched out her wheel for a bigger one
@@TheDrPlants Ily
pleaseee show the new set up w the new wheel i love lil karen@@TheDrPlants
So something to note is that pelleted food like that is actually formulated for their health to prevent them from getting too much fat in their diet, seeds are very high in fat so they're great as treats but Timothy hay is a very important source of nutrition for them, along with protein in the form of bugs, and fiber and vitamins in fresh fruits and veg
@@OllieOxyn nah pelleted food is completely unnecessary. Good quality feed (with protein like dead worms), herbs and sometimes alittle bit fresh fruits or veggies are just fine.
I knew hamsters stashed food in their cheeks, but I've never seen that inside out mouth thing that your hamster did before. Incredible specimens

Hello, as a hamster owner, never buy from petsmart since they buy animals from pet mills, and I’m very glad that you noticed her chewing on the bars and made her a bigger home, please make sure the tunnels are not used, she has a big enough wheel, lots of chewable things and toys, sand baths, (and great job on the digging supplies) and much more. Still very good setup!
is it safe to buy pets from petco? i really want a pet there
@ I’d say so your research on the animal to see if it’s good for your home, then see if there are any pet breeders (good ones) or animal shelters that have them. If you can’t find any pets, then go one TH-cam, google etc, and see if petco or petsmart is a safe place to buy that animal.
@@Blood1119No. Please do research before getting an animal! There is no excuse not to these days. We literally carry the entirety of human knowledge in our pockets.

1:22 That is not the ideal pet store setup. don't listen to them, and it is not good for them to chew on the bars.
