💡Okay idea time! This might be a cool idea for the retail side of your zoo. Consider putting QR code’s next to items or pets, the QR code’s can link to your care videos on TH-cam. So if someone is considering purchasing a new pet, they can just scan the code right there and see your care video for accurate information. It may help!
Yeah! This is a really good idea, especially for people who impulse buy, which sucks that people impulse buy reptiles but a QR code is a really good idea
One of the things I really like about you guys, is how much effort you put into giving even your feeders and substrate creatures the best living arrangements possible.

It’s not a matter of how many springtails you have. If you buy a starter culture and tip some into your enclosure they will multiply in there within weeks if the conditions are good.
Thank you! As a relatively new person to the naturalistic side of the reptile hobby (~2 ish years in to natural setups, but have had reptiles my whole life) I really appreciate the detailed explanation on how to keep these guys. I have had a lot of trouble previously with my colonies disappearing because I was given some bad advice in the beginning. I am currently trying again following the advice in this vid and hope to have better results 🤞🏼

Have you considered adding crushed eggshell to your substrate mix? It's a great source of calcium and some trace proteins that isopods go nuts for (I also add some fish food on the odd occasion as a supplemental feed since they do benefit from protein based foodstuffs and do seek it out naturally)
Very cool! I'm setting up new isopod colonies this very morning. Have 6 new types on the way. A few tips: It's better not to mist the tanks, but instead por water against the side in the moist area only (the one side that is padded heavily with sphagnum moss), this gives them a humidity gradient. The cork bark lasts longer, but that's because they don't enjoy eating it as much, punky oak wood and things like that will feed them better. If you don't have good wood to add (like I don't since I'm in the desert) you can buy bags of wood pellets used for bbqs. Get them wet and they'll turn to mush that you can mix in and it gives them lots to eat. You can also ferment the wood pellets to turn into rotting wood (which is their preference), but it takes about a month and yeast, look for recipes online. Never give your isopods pine, cedar, yew, or other wood or leaves from resinous and potent-smelling woods. You can set isopods up in aquariums if you want to watch them better. I did it for my Dairy Cows, Calicos, and Zebras, while my P. laevis Orange and Giant Canyons went into Exo-Terras, and my Scaber Lottery Mix went into my ball python's bioactive enclosure. They are all doing great (I need to do update videos to add to my colony-building videos), but the aquariums are heavy to move regularly (mine are on a rack where I have to lift them out to water) and I had some Orange escapees from their Exo-Terra. Today I'm doing storage bins just because I have so many different types. If someone is interested in isopods, they can easily start with just finding them outside under planters and putting them in a spare container inside with some dirt and leaves. No need to buy anything if you can't afford them. Use some clean, dry, and crushed eggshells for calcium, add some fish pellets regularly and they're very easy to keep. Check out Aquarimax for so much good information on raising isopods.

This is probably the perfect channel then. Emily is great at showing how scary pets are really not so bad. It's better to watch them through a video too, so youre not in actual danger and can just focus on how cool the animal is, and not how scared you are.
@@geckogingie probably just popped up, I'm terrified of spiders but one day a popular tarantula keeper popped up on my reccomened because they were growing as a channel and TH-cam most likely just pushed his channel out randomly so I started watching him, watching people care for things you find creepy is a great way to get over fears, I'm a little less scared of spiders now, even if I'm still very skittish around them. Just a speculation tho, obvi I'm not the person lolol
This was very helpful. I felt bad for some of the wild common louses on my cement front steps and I wanted to give them shelter until the winter is over cause they got rained on yesterday and today and weren't really moving. So I wanted to give them a winter home basically. Normally id leave wild animals be but I have a soft spot for these and I felt bad just leaving them there- I had a set up from another thing before hand and its ready for them. I just wanted to know what they can eat, what they need and the like I'll release them once the winter ends and then look into getting one of the species featured here!
@@jamiecrucefix4078 I love those too. I plan on getting some isopods this spring or in the summer (whenever I can find some lol) and lavas are on my list.
I have a large houseplant next to my desk at my office, with a nice colony of decomposers, including two varieties of isopod. (Rolly ones, and non-rolly ones.) I didn't have to buy anything, these are just wild ones that wandered into the office from outside, and I drop them in the plant when I find them. The colony also has millipedes, rove beetles, and I'm sure some springtails. There are occasional gnats, but I keep a cup of soapy sugar water sitting next to the plant, and the gnats will pretty quickly drown themselves, so I never have too big of a problem. The colony has been going for years, and they breed at least once a year, so all appears well with them. Half of the pot has a thick layer of assorted leaf litter and bark, and the other half of the pot is open soil, where I drop bits of my lunch leftovers, to see what they prefer. They ignore onions entirely, don't really care for walnuts, and one of their favorite things appears to be cheese shreds. Unless I can get them Kousa Dogwood fruit, they will ignore everything else if I am able to get that for them. They've been great fun to watch over the years.
i seriously love isopods. i set up my second glass terrarium and i find myself sitting there on a stool watching the little critters! there fascinating btw i got 10 powder oranges and they are awesome i cant wait for them to breed. 😊😛🤟
I would love to see a video on springtails. I'm actually looking to swap to bioactive enclosures for my reptiles but my husband is concerned that springtails would escape.
An escaped springtail is a dead springtail - they can't survive in a house, they need moisture. And even if they somehow managed to survive, they wouldn't cause any harm, they'd only eat dirt and mold.
I just got a new pet isopod from my garden and i loved this vid cause it taught me stuff to take care of it. If you keep them as pets then just remember their very fragile and somehow dont take fall damage 🤔
8:06 reptiles have such beautiful eyes! When they stare at you like that you just melt a little bit inside! Also thanks for the video i've been waiting for that one for a while! ❤
What timing! I just upgraded my corn snakes habitat with The Bio Dude's kit. The isopods arrived on Saturday. Of course I watched all of your videos on bio active and cleaner bugs before I ordered the bugs. I got spring tails first, added plants, then the isopods and finally a humidifier yesterday. Nagini loves his new setup and so do I. Thank you so much for all the information you supply. By the way I've had Nagini for 8 years.
This gave me the best idea for my 4 year old who absolutely loves digging in the dirt and finding these bugs. He was just playing with them until they passed (I wasn't fond of the thought either) so I was trying to come up with another solution. Now he can keep his little creatures in a plastic bin I made up for him and they won't die!
I live in Indiana so we have a small variety too! I didn't know there were different species and I got to show Xander that some of them were silver gray, some had yellow spots and some were milky with brown. He absolutely loved it

I have been transcribing and digitalising labels from museum pieces. Between mising labels, faded labels, terrible handwriting, Chinese, Arabic and Russian letters, and outdated species names, wrong capitalisation is one of your last problems.
@@sharkbitesback2749 That's weird, I didn't. I wrote a reply, wanted to clarify something so I clicked edit, corrected it send it. Believe me I would not go through the effort of typing that twice XD Let me see if I can fix it.
@@laartje24 I suspect the horrible handwriting in other languages is probably just writing. In our own languages we can write insanely sloppily and the word is still implied because we have a natural understanding of the writing(motions of the hand and shape of the word, not just letters). When working with other people's languages, the same isn't true, and a series of vaguely precise squiggles and a dash doesn't get automatically processed as the word it represents.
I will repeat what I said in the last isopod vid You guys should really make a isopod t-shirt that says “there’s no use crying over spilled milk-back” with a carton of milk that has milk back isopods pouring out of it
When I was a kid, I figured out how to keep isopods by trial and error outdoors in an unused planter box. This care guide is very close to how I kept mine. They lived in organic potting soil, they got fed fresh-picked tree leaves every other day, and got misted every other day in the summer. (This was in the San Francisco Bay area, so it was cool and wet the rest of the year.) I had a culture that was probably a good 50-80 mature adults with 2 generations born in it. Unfortunately the ants found it and massacred all my isopods. I never had the heart to start it back up again after that. I'm glad to see these underrated dislplay pets gaining awareness. It's really cool to watch their social behavior and see the babies grow up.
I'd not really thought of isopods before. I have springtails for my tarantulas. Well I got new tank for my crested gecko & set it up bio active. I got dwarf speckled isopods to be a clean up crew with the springtails. Well have I not fell in love with the pods, they are so adorable. I now watch substrate for ages to see the little guys appear from under leaf litter. They are fascinating. I put left over pangea feeding cup on ground & they come eat it. Now I want some different species for pets, maybe dairy cows. I'd love rubber duckies but they cost a lot here in the UK xx
You inspired me to do research about snakes and made me want to get one. Now I have a Montley Corn snake thanks to you helping me learn! Thank you for teaching me so much and showing something a became passionate about! Edit: Her name is Eden
Before I found this channel, I used to be pretty scared of snakes and everything like that, but now that I’ve watched you play with the snakes and feed them, I’ve started to really like them. Thank you
My favourite bug!! I go outside in my yard every year and catch about 15-20 of them. I just take the dirt and surrounding area they are living in as well and they do great!! As soon as they have bred and we have lots we let the go right where we found them.
Another thing you can do, if you're like me and live somewhere where you either don't have closets or don't have closets with doors. Get one of those big blue (or grey, they also come in grey) storage tubs. House them as in this video but store the tubs inside the big storage tub. Or just cover the tub(s) with a towel(s) or blanket
Very informative video, thank you! I just started with a few powder mix isopods, but eventually I’d like to keep more expensive ones. I’d even like to make a setup with just some wild isopods that show up in the summer, and see how they do.
Yeah I’ve been seeing The springtails in my crescent geckos enclosure but I’ve never knew what they were and they didn’t seem to be harming the gecko so I left them and whenever I flip over a magnolia leaf there’s like hundreds
Thankyou for a wonderfully informative video. I found your video very comprehensive and well delivered in every sense. Im researching to keep them in my hermit crab tank as well as a host colony as pets 😀 Also looking into springtails, epsecially after you mentioned they eat knat eggs, will happily be seeding them into all my inside plants for summer heat. Knats are such a persistant pest destorying my fruit within days and i very much appreciate a natural control.
When I was a kid I used to put a few of these in a container. They had moist dirt, leaf litter, and I even gave them cucumber a few times. Where I live they are mostly called potato bugs, some people call them rollie pollies.
Thank you so much! I've been taking care of Powder orange for my Leopard Gecko & Bearded dragin bioactive enclosures. They seem to do well. But the carrot shavings I was feeding them seemed to attract a lot of fungas gnats. I added some springtails & that seemed to work out great. I'll try repashy for sure! But it seems like the idopods gave exhausted all of the leaf litter, I added some southern palm leaves, that they really seem to enjoy & mix up the substrate once it starts to seperate.
This was very helpful I wanted to start my own culture of isopods because I’m obsessed with things like millipedes and isopods (and I have a ivory millipede) so thank very much for making this and I will check out your leaf video.
Yes plz do a vid for springtails! I garden and keep houseplants in humid Austin, TX, and I’m constantly fighting mold and fungus gnats, even when I have the moisture level perfect for my plants. Cinnamon helps with the gnats, but I’d love an organic option for the mold!
I have found both the rolling and flat isopods where I live a lot under leaf litter, so it may be interesting to get a container for them and use that to help recycle some leftover stuff

@@lemonshark4961 Exactly
@@geckogingie probably just popped up, I'm terrified of spiders but one day a popular tarantula keeper popped up on my reccomened because they were growing as a channel and TH-cam most likely just pushed his channel out randomly so I started watching him, watching people care for things you find creepy is a great way to get over fears, I'm a little less scared of spiders now, even if I'm still very skittish around them. Just a speculation tho, obvi I'm not the person lolol
@@geckogingie CHEYENNE!?!?!?!??!! :O
This was very helpful. I felt bad for some of the wild common louses on my cement front steps and I wanted to give them shelter until the winter is over cause they got rained on yesterday and today and weren't really moving. So I wanted to give them a winter home basically.
Normally id leave wild animals be but I have a soft spot for these and I felt bad just leaving them there-
I had a set up from another thing before hand and its ready for them. I just wanted to know what they can eat, what they need and the like
I'll release them once the winter ends and then look into getting one of the species featured here!
Thak you for making this! i have roughly 16 of these guys, all of them a nice grey colour. all leaves i use come from a huge oak tree in my backyard.
Emily: Isopod

God, I love those orange and white ones.
lava one´s are my favourite
@@jamiecrucefix4078 I love those too. I plan on getting some isopods this spring or in the summer (whenever I can find some lol) and lavas are on my list.
I do to!
It's a land isopod

I really love ur channel even though I don’t have a reptile so I decided if I do I will name one Emily and the other Ed
The year is 2022 and the channel has just been rebranded to Isopod Discovery
Can't believe I'm so early omg! I have a bunch of isopods and adore them, hopefully this'll help me better their care!
Please do springtails! I keep them for my mourning geckos and I'd love to learn more tips!
A spring tail video would be AMAZING!! This really helped a lot! Thank u!
I LOVE woodlice!! I’ve never seen orange ones before, and I had no idea they could be kept as pets!!
I just got a new pet isopod from my garden and i loved this vid cause it taught me stuff to take care of it. If you keep them as pets then just remember their very fragile and somehow dont take fall damage 🤔
@@DarkShadow_2013I used to collect these as a toddler, putting them into my pockets- much to my Mothers horror.! I’ve always loved the little cuties.
Me: "Whats it called??"
Emily: "SNAKE DISCOVERY AWESOME MIX!!!!"
I saw someone wearing a snake discovery shirt yesterday and it just made me so happy like,
Me: sneke?
Shirt: I love the noodles
Gecko: oooooOoOoo
Isopod:skert
YES Springtails video!!!
Also, literally the "what, where, when" BLEW MY MIND!
You guys are the Martha Stewart of the reptile world. I mean that with the utmost respect. You don’t miss a beat , so impressed
8:06 reptiles have such beautiful eyes! When they stare at you like that you just melt a little bit inside! Also thanks for the video i've been waiting for that one for a while! ❤
He was a cutie. Haha
Hey Emily! I am donating a water bowl that my ball python outgrew to y'all for either zoo or personal use!
Me: *Is not planning to ever get isopods whatsoever*
Also me: *Hmmm... interesting*
He absolutely loved it
Emily and Ed : “ Ico “
Me: “Ico”
Emily and ed: “pods”
Me: “pods “
Emily and Ed: “now say it altogether! , isopods! “
Me : “ rollY PoLlieS :D !”
Thanks for the likes!
Hope your friend is recovering ( the one whom you had to pick his reptiles)
Emily teaching kids what a Isopod is: “ It’s called an Isopod “
Kids” Isopod! “
5 year -old Me: “ ROLLIE POLLIE! “ 😂
Yes! Please do Springtails! I am wanting to start culturing them myself for my mantis enclosures especially since I am adding a new enclosure hopefully soon.
Thank you guys for such an awesome video on isopod care! This is just what I needed as I am starting to keep these for cleanup crew 🙌🏽 I for one would LOVE to see a care video for springtails ♥️
Emily shares the pet peeve of every science major: Species are never capitalized. That gets engraved in your brain forever
I have been transcribing and digitalising labels from museum pieces. Between mising labels, faded labels, terrible handwriting, Chinese, Arabic and Russian letters, and outdated species names, wrong capitalisation is one of your last problems.
@@laartje24 why did you type the same reply twice but with another word in the second one
@@sharkbitesback2749 That's weird, I didn't. I wrote a reply, wanted to clarify something so I clicked edit, corrected it send it. Believe me I would not go through the effort of typing that twice XD Let me see if I can fix it.
@@laartje24 huh, thats weird
@@laartje24 I suspect the horrible handwriting in other languages is probably just writing.
In our own languages we can write insanely sloppily and the word is still implied because we have a natural understanding of the writing(motions of the hand and shape of the word, not just letters). When working with other people's languages, the same isn't true, and a series of vaguely precise squiggles and a dash doesn't get automatically processed as the word it represents.
You should make a video where you set up the big isopod enclosure :0
Would you ever consider selling isopods online. Id love to get some of your "Lava" Isopods.
Thanks for the help ive had a colony of woodlice for almost 2 years
Isopods are just really great animals, lovely to take care of.
Isopods are great when you have 50 until one day you realize it's now about 500 🤣
I will repeat what I said in the last isopod vid
You guys should really make a isopod t-shirt that says “there’s no use crying over spilled milk-back” with a carton of milk that has milk back isopods pouring out of it
Has anyone noticed that on the background when you see Emily talking there is a ditto in the background xD
There is littoral tons of isopods in my back garden there really easy to find this video helped my terrarium thanks 👍
Emily: upset about a capitol letter
Me: upset that Dalmatian is spelt wrong 😭
Jesus, I thought I was the only one who saw it!
a springtail care video would be amazing!
Absolutely amazing video! I need this for a school terrarium project
I really appreciated the taxonomy segment there in the middle.
Emile let's get 1 thing straight
how do you not have like 10 million subs i LOVE u!!!!!!!!
THANKS FOR THE CARE GUIDE IT WOULD HELP ME TAKE OF MY ISOPODS
Yeah I’ve been seeing The springtails in my crescent geckos enclosure but I’ve never knew what they were and they didn’t seem to be harming the gecko so I left them and whenever I flip over a magnolia leaf there’s like hundreds
Drove by the new zoo and it's looking amazing I can't wait till it's open.
But it seems like the idopods gave exhausted all of the leaf litter, I added some southern palm leaves, that they really seem to enjoy & mix up the substrate once it starts to seperate.
i gave my isopods dried meal worms that you can buy for garden birds and they LOVE it. and its super cheap at least where i live
Liked this video as soon as you talked about ‘Genus species’ Uppercase lowercase 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Isopods are my favorite lil critters, they're so cute, I'd always let them crawl on my hands. Seeing different species is awesome.
I have a gateroade bottle full of isopods I gathered about a years ago and they’re still good.
I have found both the rolling and flat isopods where I live a lot under leaf litter, so it may be interesting to get a container for them and use that to help recycle some leftover stuff
If I ever have too many I could release them if I get them from around my home as well
They also love rotting wood. I put wood pellets used for smoking meats in with mine and its helped alot!
