I’m a dude, a trans dude, and the things that Matt Rife said made me feel gross. Both as a man, for him assuming that men would find domestic violence “jokes” (I don’t.) and as a trans man specifically because I still have to deal with people saying stuff like his jokes about me, since I don’t pass at all. Quite a few trans men end up being misogynistic, and it boggles my mind, because at the end of the day, transphobes will never see us as men, and if they treat women that poorly, they’ll treat us that poorly too, and they’ll treat trans women even worse. It’s just bad vibes all around.

As a trans woman, I saw a bit of both sides of this situation, cuz I grew up with the expectations of masculinity even though I'm a woman, and tbh one of the main expectations I was raised on is, literally treat women with respect and step up to defend them if they need it, and tbh, while that should be extended to everyone. It's like idk did some people just not learn that? Plus from the perspective of a woman it helps on occasion to have people stick up for you, cuz yeah you can probably handle yourself, but like, idk support is nice, it can give you the confidence required to stick up for yourself at times when it's scary, cuz you can have faith in them when it's tough to have faith in yourself.

Jokes about sensitive topics can work if the butt of the joke is the person or thing committing the offense act, not the victim. With Eddie Murphy, the butt of the joke was abusive husbands getting what they deserved. The punchline being these men who used to think they were tough hot shots in charge are running with their tails tucked. You can laugh at that image. With Rife, the butt of his “joke” was the victimized woman with the punchline expecting the audience to find abuse and misogyny funny, and he expects them to laugh at the idea of a beaten woman forced to hide in the kitchen. There’s nothing funny or absurd to laugh at in that scenario.
He went after a child, an innocent child, and innocent child who did nothing that’s actually sick.

Even just delivery can make a dark joke funny, but Rife couldn't even do that in an original way. I'm currently watching The Last Man on Earth and it can get pretty dark, but Kristen Schaal always has amazingly executed delivery.
