I worked at an ice cream place once, and an older woman came in, ordered a banana split, but wanted it with soft serve. She still wanted the hot fudge and marshmallow on it, too. She then complained that it was the "worst banana split she ever had". Not my fault she doesn't understand "hot thing melts cold thing".

I did the same thing once with a pizza, adding shrimp to a pizza that had a very specific type of salami, which ended up making the pizza nearly inedible 'cause the shrimp and salami didn't go together. I had been warned beforehand that that might happen, and it was explained to me again when I talked to the staff about it being gross. I was bummed and a bit annoyed at the time that I still had to pay for it but in hindsight I agree with them. I chose that combination all on my own, so tough sh*t, you know 😅

I've worked for bosses who would absolutely lose their minds if they caught anyone even relaxing a bit in between tasks as if we'd done nothing all day. Even bosses who would come to yell at us for taking a 10 minute break because they felt the law requiring one was a stupid one that they shouldn't have to follow. All around just awful managers and each one taught me more and more just how stupid some people are and how badly they take the power trip. I look at it now compared to my current boss who will come sit with me on breaks and just chat because she understands our job isn't that busy and as long as everything's getting done and getting done the right way what does it matter if we can have a minute to relax. Kind of funny how some are super disconnected from reality and demand the impossible out of people and others are just happy things are getting done right and quickly.

    • @mikoto7693
      @mikoto7693 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I’ve worked under various managers over the years and I’ve discovered that I do best with the type of manager whose entire philosophy can be boiled down to this. “So long as you get your tasks done, don’t break the law, badly violate company policy and don’t look bad in front of the customers/patients, I really don’t care what you do with the rest of the shift.”
And the one I have really embraces that philosophy once she trusts you. Consistently do the assigned tasks well and if you end up finishing everything say, half an hour early and she literally won’t mind if you then find a quiet corner out of sight of the general public and read a book or play on your phone until home time.
BUT it’s a two way street, so to speak. If you do a shoddy job or not finish it all and slack off, she will nail your ass to the wall. She’s fair but ruthless.
By contrast I hate the managers that breathing down your neck and micromanage you.

The closest I ever came to this was when a boss told me to be at work on an approved day off for my wedding anniversary. I'm a line chef at an upscale hotel restaurant, and at one point, I was working the dessert station. One of our servers brought a dessert back to me saying that the guest was complaining that the dessert was frozen and too cold. I explained to the server, that a Baked Alaska is a frozen dessert. People need to know what it is they're ordering before they order it.

One of my favourite things about where I work now is the mentality of
"If you don't have anything to do, don't do it here"
meaning that as long as all the stuff that needs to be done is done, then just go home for the day. Since technically the boss isn't allowed to just let us leave early though, usually that phrase pops out of the manager or supervisor's mouth and suddenly everyone has some kind if "admin" to get done, needing to pick up a parcel and the post office would be closed if they waited until end of day, needing to go to the bank, an appointment they had "just" remembered they had, anything that would allow our boss to let us go for the day. It's beautiful.

  • @kimothy1701

I can understand bosses not liking it when people are not busy. But when there's nothing to actually do because everything has been done that is a clear sign that they have been busy and not slacking off. OK take 5, grab a soft drink on the house but out of sight. Just stay on your toes and keep an eye out ready to go for when customers do come in. Don't keep anyone waiting or wanting. Simple. Treat your staff well and they will go all put for you. Treat em like crap get crap back

This happened years ago~My cousin his wife, his son (18)& his g/f had gone to a mall to see a movie together. They decided to get ice cream before departing the mall. After they found a table the father & son went to get the ice cream. They stood in line & there was a hollering Karen with a very nice 5-6 year old at the front of the line.
When the Dad & son made it to the front they placed their order & asked what gone on before. The young woman at the order window told the tale. Karen came to the window with a BOGO coupon. The young woman looked at the coupon & noticed it was for a different ice cream story. Cue yelling & waving of hands. The Manager came to the front. Karen told him it was obvious that competing stores should honor each other’s coupons. Manager asked to see the infamous coupon & noticed it was over 2 months out of date. Manager refused to accept the coupon. Kate yelled at the injustice & how she would “take action”.
Manager noticed the little boy being brave but he was also quietly crying. Manager asked him what his favorite flavor was. Little boy told him & manager gave him a free 1 scoop cone. The little boy was very very grateful & thanked the manager. Karen then told the manager her favorite flavor. Manager said “next”. Karen left in a fury.
After hearing the story the Dad then gave the Manager a big tip to be split with the young woman who had first dealt with Karen.
Dad & son went back to the two waiting ladies. They both laughed.

I was working as a road sweeper for the local council, and part of the area I had to sweep was a 3-way alley, which was lined by fir trees. This was in late October, and the weather was atrocious! High winds and rain most days. I swept the alleys, bagging up the pine needles, cones and litter, filling 3 large black bin bags. Then I moved onto the next part of my route. I stopped for lunch a while later, and a manager decided to come and inspect the area. This manager was the type of person that would fold a crisp bag in a certain way, and look to see if it had been picked up. He came up to me and said that I hadn't done the job properly, so I had to go back to the alleyway, and resweep. I asked him if he'd seen the bags, and that the weather was bad. Didn't matter, had to go resweep. This was on a Thursday. I went back and, another 3 bags later, finished my route.
Friday, I was on another route, and the same manager came and found me. He told me that I would have to go back to the alleyway on the Saturday to sweep it again. I asked if I'd get overtime for it, and he said no. I told him that it wasn't happening, and that I quit. Saying that, I placed my broom and shovel back on the cart, and went to the pickup area.

My first job as a receptionist, my boss had this weird idea that I controlled how many calls came in. He had me track the calls I made (not what they were or to whom, just the number of calls I made), and track the calls I answered (same thing, just the number). Well, we were a seasonal business, just entering the slow season, and the number of calls went down, so he chided me. "You need to answer more calls! That is YOUR JOB!"
So, I called my mother, my father, my brother, my sister-in-law (only local calls), a few friends. I'd quickly call them, and say, "Yeah, he's on about my numbers. Give me a few calls, please?"
A minute later, one would call. I'd answer professionally, and then, when they said who they were, I'd say, "Oh! Great! Thanks!" Hang up, and log the call. If anyone heard me, they'd hear a professionally answered call, and a professional thank-you, for "services rendered," and it looked great.
    He gave me a raise.

It's easier to get the big boss on this sort of law-breaking than on sexual harassment, because sexual harassment cases are often "He said/she said," unless you have multiple witnesses WHO ARE WILLING TO TESTIFY. Sure, the "friend" will make jokes about how he treats her, and how she does NOT LIKE IT, but will he stand up and say that in court? Unlikely, and she knew it.
She may have gone to HR, and they may have been worthless.
This lawsuit may have been exactly the blessing in disguise she'd been waiting for.
This big boss sucks ALL AROUND. But then again, IMO, people who are willing to sexually harass their own employees usually do suck on at least two other fronts, as well. It's a mark of character that they think so little of a person to treat them that way. "You're not a human being. You're my employee. I pay you, so I own you, and you are my property!"
