    Story 2:
I was the dishwasher for a restaurant and I like to stay busy and help whenever I can. I was great at my job, so I could let dishes get backed up a bit and do other non-dishwasher tasks, like prep work for the 200+ item salad bar, or prep work for the appetizer bar. A new manager started and saw that I had left the dishwasher area and was prepping some salad bar items. I had maybe six plates and two racks of bar glasses to wash. I knew the bartender had plenty of glasses, so not an urgent need at that moment.
The new manager screamed at me for not being in my area at all times and lots of other comments. I tried to explain that I am quick at washing the dishes and able to leave early at the end of the night.
He informed me that I am to stay in the dishwasher area at all times and not leave until my scheduled 11:00 pm time. I normally was done with all my work by 9:45 pm.
I told him, if that is what you are mandating, I will obey.
He smirked and told me yes it is a mandate!
The salad bar people ran out of items, and no one had time to prep anymore. At 9:00 pm, I was done and watching everyone scrambling to finish the side tasks that I used to do for them.
11:00 pm, I punched out and went home!
The manager found out from the general manager about how helpful I am and he knows what I have been doing. I refused to help since I was JUST a dishwasher!
I did this for over nine months until I finally quit.

In the US in the late 80’s/early 90’s, we had several incidents of extreme violence at post offices, which earned all extreme workplace violence to be known as “going postal”. Basically, employees were micromanaged to the point that they were only given limited bathroom breaks of limited time and supervisors would time them and employees would receive reprimands if they took more than 2 minutes. This caused extreme stress in certain individuals, who would end up getting fired but returned to the workplace with a gun (yah! 2nd amendment making this possible). The post office had revamped all their policies when the Dept of Labor inspections revealed the terrible way employees were treated and this scandal hit the papers.

While in the US you're required to take bills as payment, you're not legally required to take coins. Most stores will take coins because they're set up to handle large amounts of coins but places like where OP worked aren't.

I have adhd, and for the longest time I had trouble trying to stay calm and concentrate on things ,but one thing i absolutely dislike in some people is that when you have an bad day or whatever ,and you take it out on others !! That says so much about you! If you can't hold your anger and feelings in general ,then you need to practice and try harder, because I'm going to be judging you ! And I'm not alone! I think people who can't control themselves ,are absolutely idiots, and childish ! The excuse that someone is having a bad/hard day, isn't in my opinion a good enough of an excuse and they should be embarrassed by everyone!

Well since being nice to me didn't work, all pretense of niceness was dropped as she proceeded to inform me of all my imagined faults and those of my parents, friends and any other relations I might have or think to have in the future.
    Me: Gee, Project much Amanda?
Amanda: [Finishes blowing a gasket and proceeds directly into Nuclear Meltdown territory]...YOU'RE FIRED!!!
Me: OK [Clocks out and walks out of store to payphone and now that I'm not her employee anymore and thus not under her orders, goes to nearest payphone and calls Ken to inform him that Amanda will shortly be slapped with a Wrongful Dismissal and Workplace Harassment Complaint to the State Department of Labor because of [incident]...

There were so many things that Amanda was fired for: Power Harassment, Verbal Harrassment, slacking off on the job, misuse of position, unwarranted use of phone, OSHA violations, bad attitude towards customers, etc. Honestly. I'm surprised she wasn't fired sooner. I hope OP got recordings of that incident. They could've sued Amanda.

When it comes to lifts, there was an occasion that being the apprentice,my nephew was out helping our electrical engineer at a job. They both entered the building together, but he was sent to get some bolts for safety control covers in the lift. During that time security changed shifts. He left in ahurry, leaving his I.D. in his jacket with Geoff, the engineer. The security guards not recognising him wouldn't let him back into the building. Well Geoff went over the time he was allowed to work, so he gathered up his stuff and my nephew's jacket and went to sign out at the front desk. The guards on the desk said, "Oh, have you finished?" To which he replied, "No i am out of time, if you had let my apprentice back into the building two hours ago, we would have finishef, but now its too late. We will be back sometime tomorrow". They were stunned and embarrassed but there was nothing they could do. They told me this story and we all laughed about the idea of them doing their night time patrols having to go up and down stairs all night, even to the tenth floor because of their own stupidity. This was in London in the 1970s.

I Imagine Amanda never felt so much humiliation as that day. Stuck in an elevator for 5 hours because of her own crappy behavior. She probably never even learned her lesson either. Just assumed that because she was the bosses niece that she would be able to cruise through on life without consequences and thought she actually had more authority than she had. Bet the walk of shame when she was fired really drove it home for her too. When you're an ass, you get treated like one.

Story 2: This is why I love my manager and owner. Albeit my manager is my aunt however the owner is no realtion. Our closing time is 9pm but our manager and owner are very understandable when it comes to closing times. We have a seasonal business so if we have “on days” it can takes us an extra half hour after closing to clock out because of the cleaning required and they’ll pay us for that and it’s also ok if we decided to close early due to heavy rains/lightning storms, because who’s showing up for ice cream when it’s lightning and pouring rain at 9pm?
