How much personnal info of the clients does she has access too? Info on the employee as she is a manager (she probably has access to liscence number/social security number, phone number, date of birth, contacts numbers that often include full name of the parents and other stuff like this. >Is surprised when OP works overtime because of heavy workload and someone expects OP to take less time on the same amount of work.
    >Both owners give contradicting instructions to OP because more miscommunication
    >OP is eventually fired, and they fight over unemployment

There should be division of responsibility. For example the place I work right now, the owner is a husband and wife, where the husband takes responsibility for marketing and the wife takes care everything else. And they don't override one another because staffs are the wife domain, while the husband busied himself with meeting big clients. He may asks staffs to do some paperwork from time to time, but never bother us with excessive works.

Managers make such a huge difference. Having a good one - hard-working, knowledgeable, supportive, encouraging, someone you KNOW has your back, will make you want to work harder, keep you happy and motivated, and go the extra mile. THEN you get the one who doesn't know crap, is a total "yes-man," is focused on hierarchy rather than who can do what job well, doesn't ask, doesn't learn, doesn't get to know how things work, doesn't get to know what people's strengths are, moves stuff around constantly, is just incompetent - people become angry, frustrated, stressed out, and spend a lot of time and energy venting, begins to lose their passion and motivation, stops going the extra mile and does the minimum required for their job. This is what we are going through now.
BEFORE the good one, we had NO manager in our facility (we had a manager who was regional for 2 facilities and she visited ours maybe once every week or two weeks) and even then, we were a fantastic team, full of respect towards each other, striving always for excellence, very little drama, and loving our jobs. In other words, we were already a good team and good boss made us even better. Bad boss came in and pretty much wrecked things.

When you're in a situation like that and get fired, you ask for a meeting with a case manager or supervisor at the unemployment office. You give them copies of the stuff that you did, tell them about the staffing, the miscommunication between the bosses, everything. ESPECIALLY the crap about you working too much overtime. And that they didn't help you with the stuff. That way the supervisor can recommend that the city/state revoke their business license. Just in case they try to fight the unemployment.

Some security / antiscam person (I don't recall who) pointed out that these were features, not bugs. Intelligent and street wise people (not the same populations) would realize such an email was a scam attempt and would delete it without opening. People like the woman in Story 2 would not have the appropriate error-detection brainware, open it and have a high probability of responding to and cooperating with the scammer.
      .
I.e., scammer emails are crafted to filter out the more difficult to scam people, creating a self-selecting population of responders who would be easier and more lucrative to scam, lowering their costs of doing business and increasing their payoff per scamee rate. Features, not bugs.

The 1st story reminded me about my aunt. She lived with her parents her entire life, except for 6 months when she was married. My grandmother, *literally,* did everything for her during her entire life. She worked in my grandfather’s dress store, and when he retired, she got a job at a high end department store, and was very successful.
She was around 52 when my grandmother died, and 55 when my grandfather died. She was lost then. She didn’t know how to do anything, except work. Didn’t know how to do anything that had to do with household chores, or really just taking care of herself.
She completed suicide a few years later, being a lonely, sad woman. They did a disservice to her, by not teaching her how to be independent at all. She could have still lived with them, but they needed to teach her some life skills. 😢

Oh hell no !!! Plans change and you forgot to tell me that you put me on the schedule? Yeah no that doesn't work for me and I will not be working for you TODAY!! NOT HAPPENING. Plans may change but in this situation your mistake does not have anything to do with me you made the mistake so you will be working that shift because that's what happens when managers FAIL to ACTUALLY "MANAGE"!
What would you have done if I failed to call the store for directions and just called tomorrow? ( I don't know what state this op is or was working in, but in New York you have to have at least a 24-hour notification for a schedule change, that's just the way it is you can't just write someone's name in on the schedule after the schedule is already been posted and then say well you're on the schedule so you need to come into work! No I'm sorry that's not how this works😂😂
I would have thanked him for the directions and said they will be very useful tomorrow when I come in on my scheduled shift!! However as this is my day off I will be going to sleep now so I can be all perky tomorrow to work my SCHEDULED SHIFT! (keep saying the word SCHEDULED extremely emphasized!)
    THEN END THE CALL WITH
" hopefully it won't be busy tonight and you'll have an easy shift anyway I've got to go I need to get caught up on my sleep I'll talk to you tomorrow good night !!"
and then hang up the phone 🫵🏻🤳 💢CLICK!!💢

In story 1, it seems the newbie thought OP would keep going above and beyond even though newbie would hold title, salary and authority, and the owners thought they had such a devoted employee that made it so they did have to exert any effort in owning and running a business that they would be able to live forever on OP's labor. I wonder how they explained to future employers that they deserve a management position because they know how to hire people who will do their work for them

Overtime Story: When I got Reprimanded for working too much Overtime, I'd have written out a complete list of my Current Tasks, handed it to the Boss and asked him "OK, if I'm not allowed to work Overtime anymore, which of these Tasks are you giving to someone else to reduce my workload to something that can be done in a normal shift, oh and please understand that whichever Employee you shift my work to is going to need Overtime as they are just as swamped with work as I am...If you don't want anyone to do Overtime, you WILL need to hire more people to handle the total workload because ALL of us are severely Overworked and need Overtime to get everything done..."
Yah, that would likely have gotten me yelled at, but if they Fired me, I'd called the Department of Labor to file a Complaint about being overworked, Reprimanded for too much Overtime and then fired when I explained WHY I was doing so much Overtime...I suspect the DoL would have an unpleasant conversation with both Owners about Illegal Retaliation and Wrongful Dismissal...

Story #1: Decades ago, as a woman in her 20's at the time, I worked for an 18-table restaurant/ice cream fountain place. Table and take out service. I was the cook, and we had a very large and varied menu, actually, and ice cream was made on premises twice weekly, and you could watch him making it in the glass walled room. It was cool to watch I guess. Not the point though.
Anyway, the couple that owned the place at the time, he made the ice cream and helped wherever needed at the time, but so-so at all of the jobs. She was the same, just like her husband, seriously slow, and didn't make ice cream...but did kitchen stuff more but not really better. Well, that night we were slammed three times over. Lines literally out the door, and what ended as a 3 1/2 hour freaking rush. I am fast...ADHD overload, really. Plus, if I had my tapes playing...YES I'm old....I could get in a groove and sail for hours if left alone and out of my way. I had orders waiting for picking up and THREE waitresses AND to go orders, but I was belting out the orders. AND they both came into the kitchen giving ME crap because food is sitting under lamps getting 'old'!!! WTF?! I said "I'm fine...but why can't three waitstaff not keep up with one cook and 2 fountain people?" They gave me shit, because they knew I was right but couldn't bitch out waitstaff in front of customers, can they? The only ones in back were me and dish people, and it's not their fault. Both of them at the same time, in the small kitchen.
So I got pissed off and told them..and yes verbatim, "Oh fuck off! I'm the fastest cook you've ever had and you KNOW it! I do the prep, I do the counting for you to order, I do the opening and have done the closings, and YOU say this is MY fault?! YOU Fucking cook then! I never got a break yet and I've been on duty 5 damn hours! That's illegal!"
Oh...btw...my voice has that tone that carries even when I'm not trying for it to do so. I literally went to the little table in the corner by the dish area and office and sat my butt down and crossed my arms. They obviously had to work the kitchen and deal with me later...orders were piling up, food was on the grill, the griddle, the fryers, and the prep board.
After that rush finally ended, he came back and very quietly said that his wife would like to speak to me in the kitchen, please. I went to the kitchen and it was a blazing wreck! OMG I've never seen such a mess. Horrifying, really. OMG...I can't...and the walk-in...oh Lordie. Sauces on door handles, lettuce, grated cheese, chopped egg everywhere. the griddle with burning meat and cheese bits, fryers floating with fall-off pieces...everything empty and not refilled. Spilled salad dressing in the walk-in floor, too. And much more.
EVERYTHING I alone manage to do, they could not manage with BOTH of them working together! I took literally a minute just looking around, opening doors, assessing the 'damage', saying nothing. She said nothing either. Just stood watching me. Finally done looking at the entire mess everywhere, I walked over to her, and she looked at me without a word. I just gave her a look that says 'I see you made 20X the mess I ever did even on the busiest shifts' without a word. Her expression shifted to a spot over my shoulder and I knew her husband was behind me. Her gaze shifted to the ground momentarily and then back to my eyes. She then spoke the quietest I've ever heard her, and said, "I'll clean this up. It's not fair to ask you to do it, since you didn't make it. Please just help the dishwasher if you don't mind, while I do."
I just said, "I'll clean it up, since the stocking and closing still has to be done and I clean then anyway." SHE went and helped the dishwasher catch up. The husband went into the office to do some paperwork. Neither of them EVER complained or yelled at me ever again, no matter what was going on. They KNEW what I said was the truth. And it was. I've always been fast if it was needed. ADHD, remember? Talked fast, too. LOL
Even in high school working Burger King...I was the fastest on the boards whilst also being made correctly and neatly, and a cocky male manager also got schooled unintentionally by me when HE yelled at me years before the above incident. He was blaming ME for food not showing up, when in fact someone took the regular burgers instead of the special order ones they ordered. So everyone said race to see who is actually the better burger maker..and I always won and he always got pissed then stomped off to the office. I just know I'm a fast worker if needed. That's my sort of Karen bosses..who rehabilitated. LOL

    Story 2 -
Wow, how is this woman still alive?
Yes, she should be living safely at home, and yes her parents/family need respite from caring for her etcetera.
But this is NOT the way to do it. Using a family business as a form of adult day care and expecting your employees to “babysit” is wrong on so many levels.
If Meg’s brother was there in the store and he took responsibility for her himself, then that might work.
But to simply drop her off and then leaving, letting her think that she is now the boss….You’re just asking for trouble.
They thought they would save money this way and look how that backed for them 😳
Next time, if they need a break, find an adult respite facility or organisation. That way Meg will be safe, she won’t have her identity stolen AGAIN and your business won’t be affected.
The cost of a respite facility is looking a lot more reasonable right about now I think 😂
Or, if Meg doesn’t qualify for assistance or adult respite support services, then she needs to find a hobby or attend school or some description - preferably one that offers classes in Life Skills.
OP is a phone technician NOT an adult babysitter.
