Just wanted to say that Gary is a hell of a good guy and helped out a fellow mechanic repairing a 62te that I have no experience with. I had 2 quick very technical inquiries and he answered them almost as soon as i asked. Couldn't thank you enough! Great videos!
Hello I just want to say thank you so much you saved me over 6000 dollars with this video you do a good job and it is very much appreciated thank you again your awesome
Anyone else impressed with how Gary can keep track of all those parts? After approximately 20 small parts, i would start getting nervous about what goes where and its orientation...... Even with tons of practice his parts recall ability seems incredible..
If you have any concept of building a transmission, it's never really a problem. It's just a matter of pay attention just like any puzzle one might do.
Love the video man it was a great help. I’m a GM transmission tech for 15 years but I’ve never been into one of these until my wife’s caravan went down.
We are in the same boat sort of. Right now I’ve got the 62TE out of the better half’s Journey apart. I’ve rebuilt many manual transmissions, but this is my first endeavor in an automatic.
Thanks Gary this is the best video I’ve seen on these and has helped me get my 62TE apart easily. Mine has the classic low drum failure with all teeth broken off. 133k miles and been driving with basically no effective reverse for a couple of years and probably 25 k miles. It was finally time and the weather is nice.
@@LuisFlores-tc6wz You are better off taking it completely apart and replacing all the bearings while you are in there. There are a lot of bearings in this trans and they take a beating when the lower drum goes. Follow Gary's video, he covers all the details.
Great video, I rebuilt many 604 Chrysler transmissions during the time I worked for a dealer. Never got into the 62TE as I was into management by the time they came out. There was a 5 year period that that was all I did.
thank you for your input im 45 year mech but not trans i put the lock up sol in my wifes trans on your advice and it worked .it was dieing at stops ty 30 bucks fixed it
Thanks!! I have this gear in dodge journey 2009. When slow down for traffic or stop sign I feel hard shift when downshifting between 3rd to 2nd . no error codes and working ok. Oil color and level are fine the car is 75k miles. I tried manual shifting from 1-6 up and down without problem.
What i would try first is a quick learn, this is done through a scan tool, it basically resets the shift adapts. There cant be any codes present in trans or engine or it will not adapt.
Yours videos help me again, I teardown a auto Fiat Freemont that come with the same gearbox 62TE, that has a big problem in torque converter. Thanks so much from Brasil.
Gary. Happy new year. I’m working on a 6l50. It was rebuilt by someone else. It slips in and out of 1st gear when I put it in drive. I can drive it manually through all six gears without a problem. If I start off in 1st manually. and shift it to drive it works great. I could use your help Thank u Satch
Good presentation, Gary. Although, for those of us who didn't mark the sprag, it would have been nice if you had demonstrated the sprag rotation when you took things apart.
All of that gives me a panicky feeling! But reading the comments settles me a little. The local mechanic wants $9000 to replace the tranny. The car (2008) only cost $6000. I can get a rebuild kit for $450. My wife and I agree...what have I got to lose but time and $450? I'm retired, so time is not an issue. I am going to attempt it this fall. Thanks for the great video.
Mr. Ferraro, I have a question? On 13.00 flat, you mention about the snap rings. On my 2018 62TE. I had a clutch disc in place instead of the pressure plate, the snap rings where in correct order. But now 75K its slipping and trans pump is grinding. Also are all the clutch packs the same color? My low reverse clutch packs are black in color?
Thank you Gary for this video really well done. I have a 2012 Grand caravan with 120K miles on it. I was on highway and suddenly car felt on neutral, rpm goes high. Tow the car to home and then change filter and oil. Car was running fine, no slipping for 200 miles and same thing happen. I changed oil and filter again and still running well but I don't know for how long. I open the filter and they had not a lot of big metal particles and the magnet was also not too bad. I am wondering If I just change the torque converter or to be sure clutch and slowdrum. Do you have any idea? Thank you.
Your content is great. Every bit as good as Eric O. (South Main Auto) or Ivan's (motoYam82) but your cameras resolution is letting you down...anything less than 480p is hard to watch or that is what my eyesight says! Keep up the good work.
Thanks john, i think i need an eternal hard drive to move some stuff out of my computer, When uploading, it tells me theres not enough room, try a lower resolution. Thanks for watching. Gary

Well, without looking at a scan tool, its hard to say, i hate to have you waste your time, but i personally would not use a doorman product. ive had trouble in the past, i attended a seminar about a month ago, speaking to a rep, i told him the problems i was having(another tech was there too)he was having issues to with GM products for transmissions, long story short, the rep admitted to having problems with the machines that build these transmission parts, again i hate to waste your time but at this point it cant hurt.
Hey Gary! Great video...when are you gonna upload the reassembly video? Most people would just say watch the video backwards but I know that you probably have a few secret tips and tricks to putting these back together. Thanks again.
Hi Gary. I have a problem with Lancia Voyager from 2011, with a 62te transmission , there is a skid between 4-5 and 5-6 gear.Do you know what could be the cause ??The computer does not show the trouble codes
Hello Gary. I have a 2015 Chrysler Town & Country. Codes are P0733 “Gear Ratio Error in 3rd” & P1790 “Fault Immediately after shift”. Symptoms are: No reverse at all, D or Drive engages but “drops” or loses gear/power shortly after driving a few feet (Seems to always happen once it hits 8-10 mph). This forces me to put it o park and re-engage D or turn off he car and start it again to re-engage D. These symptoms can be duplicated every time with no exception or randomness. Any suggestions? I am hoping to repair myself. Is there a specific kit or part you would recommend? Thanks!!
Hey Gary having an issue 2010 62TE having codes p0734 gear ratio error in 4 th p0792 compounder speed ratio error p1790 fault after shift. also noticed 4-5 shift fill volume is max out at 255 . do you think I have a problem in that compounder drum? thanks John
great vid, I'm getting these errors in my Routan: P0733 - Gear 3: Incorrect Ratio P0734 - Gear 4: Incorrect Ratio P0792 - SAE - Intermediate Shaft Sensor A: Range/Performance Could it be a sensor or are we looking at mechanical? Thanks!
Gary Ferraro shifting appears fine until it goes back into limp. Reverse seems under powered though and takes a few seconds longer to engage than normal.
the fluid wasn't low, I changed the filter and refilled with +4 back to the proper level/temp. No burning smell or major metal wear was showing in the pan. Magnet had some fuzz but nothing in excess and pan didn't have much as in sludge.
When you take of the 2" nut on the drive transfer gear do you have to tap the indentations out or will it simply come off with the an Air Impact Gun? Also I am having trouble with the 3 mm manual shaft retainer pin screw. It seems to be stripped out. Any suggestions? Thanks
Nicely done... I'm actually going to put this tear down video to the test soon.. I have a 62TE with 125k on it that is shuttering everyday and it's not getting any better...I don't have $4500 for a shop. Sooo, I've done old school 727s, C4. Etc. This one will be a challenge.. Thankful for your videos... I did like & Subscribe... I'm going to need information where to find that odd looking special tool you pulled out for removal of a particular snap ring way in the back of trans. Any help on that would be fantastic 👌 thank you sir!!
Alrighty appreciate that tool information!! Next month that Tranny coming out... My brother and I are going to follow your videos to a T & Get this thing done... thanks to you! 😁
Garry Ferraro hi I see your still answering questions for people that’s awesome. I have a 2014 town&country with 62TE , wife was driving home on the highway and lost all power from transmission. When we finally got it home there was 8 different codes, p0731,733,729,841,846,868,83B,84B. Is this a electrical issue or mechanical issues. Thanks!
Greetings colleagues, I am trying to measure the oil in a Chrysler 62TE, I have the original dipstick to measure the oil and the graph vs. temperature, but I am somewhat confused because I can perceive that when inserting the dipstick there are 2 stops, I was respecting the last stop and I have already added 9 liters and it lacks one or two liters, and as I remember this has a maximum of 6 liters when performing only oil and filter change service. Will I have to respect the 1st limit?
@@GaryFerraro Hi Gary sorry I never saw your response on this one! As you noticed from my comment on your other video it wasn't the TCC SOLENOID. Thanks for your amazing videos. They have helped me a lot when speaking with transmission shops!
What is the difference between a p05169720ac and p05169720ad 62TE? I have my 2014 Grand Caravan's p05169720ad disassembled based on your awesome videos. While I was at the local U-pull junkyard there was a p05169720ac sitting next to a Chrysler that someone had pulled the engine from. I can get that trans for about the same as the rebuild kit not to mention saving myself hours of reassembly. Can I use the AC in the Caravan?
yes the pack band new resis is checking out to be right and went back thruogh it to check 4 and 6 check ball and all lip seal in the output drum and check accm seal and accm for cracks found nothing ,now when i frist build it i pull too many steel in the out put drum and it been hell, check presure at transmission line only getting 25 psi at idea 27 in revers 0 in drive took new pump apart and the gears lookchew up and the pump dose not look meahaine right
I rebuilt the 62 TE something is off I have reverse and 1st but as soon as it would shift to 2nd slips into neutral what in particular what cause this? Help is very much appreciated!!
I greatly appreciate the professionalism of your 62TE video. I too, in addition to most of the commentators have a P0740 on the same Trans. from a 2016 Chrysler T&C with only 72,000 miles. The stealership want $4,600 to replace the Trans. At first I had some shifting issues, replaced fluid and filter. I did note more extremely fine shavings than usual on the pan magnet. Slapped it all back together and the transmission works exceptional. However, the P0740 code comes back. I have 2 questions for you. The 1st, what are your thoughts? 2nd, do you have an accurate part number for the TCC solenoid? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Gary.
I should be able to get a part number for you, i would there are a few things that will cause this code, very possible you have a bad torque converter. Other things that would caus this code are, the TCC solenoid(also may cause engine to stall) worn pump bushing or stuck bypass valve which is located in the case right behind the pump
@@GaryFerraro Thanks for your reply. I took out the TCC solenoid and tested the resistance and came up with 5.6 ohms. The manual say it should be 4.8 4.9 ohms. So I changed it out thinking I was in safe water. However, when I drove the van around for about 15 miles the check engine light came back on for P0740. I was really hoping to not have to shell out for a new trans. Crazy thing is that it shifts and drives just fine with no issues. Thanks for your help Gary.
@@GaryFerraro Hey Gary, Thanks for all your replies. It's much appreciated. It looks like I'm going to change out the Torque converter. This will be a new learning experience for me, but I feel confident enough to tackle to job. Anyway I was hoping you have a part number for the pump bushing you mentioned to me earlier? I cant seem it get an accurate one. The way I see it is that I should change that while I have the trans pulled out of the van. Thanks Gary.
Ya f that 3 tab snap ring on the compounder. Mac has a small snap ring pliers with a 90 on the end I found helps. I noticed yours didn’t have the lower plastic cage bearing on the shaft I have considered putting one on my current build in addition to the updated wit drum Any thoughts?
dint do anything to the trans i buy it like that but looks like somebody opened before ,i apreciate any any info gary before i buy the master rebuild kit i got trans out already tank you gary
Thanks for such a fast reply. I believe axils are OK because it holds in park but that's it. Could it be the pump? If I loosen the fitting on the cooling line would that tell me if pump is working? I saw that your shop isn't that far from my work, I may be in after I get it out. Thanks again
I bought New a 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan - 3.6L v6 Pentastar & 6spd -62TE - auto trans and have had nothing but problems with the transmission has 23,000 kilometers and the Torque Converter was replaced before 20,000km and it still bangs into D or Reverse. Transmission is a total POS. Been sent TSB for re-flashes that don't do much. Even the mechanic from chrysler told me don't use the eco-mode on these , because it makes the shift points sorta screwy. Wish i'd never bough it. Last Chrysler ever. And we've been buying them for a long time. Almost every chrysler has had transmission problems under warranty dating back to the 80's.
No they replaced it because at 18-22 km/hr going dowhill it would bang /clunk shift. And they mechanic took the tranny pan off and found clutch material all inside the pan. So they replaced the torque converter & and compounder etc. It's actually back in their as we speak. Still bangs reverse to drive. Just dropped it off today.
Let me know how it goes, the common clutch for reverse and drive is the Low/Reverse clutch, did they look at axles or maybe mounts, how does it drive otherwise, upshifts and downshifts?
Hello Gary, You said let you know how it went at Chrysler/Dodge after i got my car back. -I just got my 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan back from my local Dodge Dealer this week May 16th 2017 after i told them the car when warmed up a bit will clunk/bang in Reverse and even drive. More reverse. When the car is cool or just started up & the temperature is not off the peg you will get relatively smooth/normal engagement of the gears. -They told me they could not replicate the problem. But did a re-learn on the software , which made no difference. - So i went back to talk to the service manager because the transmission specialist mechanic was either busy or didn't want to look at it. I showed the service manager while sitting in the van in the parking lot, and it didn't do it as much as it sometimes will but he saw what i meant. You either get a hard-bang/clunk semi-rough-bang/clunk or smooth engagement. Also noticed when the drivers window is down when engaging the transmission it is really noisy. -We tried a few other vans on the lot, 2013 and some of them were a little rough....but nothing like ours is when placed in reverse when it decides to shudder/clunk/bang. Car presentley has 23,000km on it as of May 18th , 2017 back in September , 2016 @ 19,000km the Dodge Dealer after a test drive with me & the transmission mechanic & telling them the car is clunking /banging at 18-22km/hr randomly. They pulled the pan found clutch material in the fluid of the pan (this is 4 years after me insisting there was a problem) They Replaced at that time: -the Torque Converter -UnderDrive Compounder -Internal Transmission Seals -Replaced Transmissio Filter -Complete Replacement of All Fluid -New Axle Seals -Re-Learn again on the transmission Any ideas or suggestions would be great. I have till june 30th 2017 until my warranty is up. Here is my post on Car Complaints.com Long one at the Bottom (anonymous autobeef ) www.carcomplaints.com/Dodge/Grand_Caravan/2012/transmission/shifting_loud_roughly.shtml www.carcomplaints.com/Dodge/Grand_Caravan/2012/transmission/transmission_makes_clunking_noise_when_put_into_drive_d.shtml
Well since it ok sometimes, there is a pressure port by the side cover, im wondering if theres something going on with the pressure when its smooth compared when it bangs, but another suggestion would be the valvebody and solenoid pack to see if that helps.
Gary, where are you located, i started having some kind of wobble in front end on 2012 caravan 91k on it, thought it was a bearing or an axle but it almost sounds like its coming from the transmission, i jacked the vehicle looked underneath and with every rotation everything moves tranny and engine, now im clueless and thinking finding a good specialist.
@@GaryFerraro On board abrites. Box inside the clean, no degradation products. Oil is not burned. Mileage 80,000 miles. First, third and fourth - all is well. The second and fifth turn on for two seconds and the box falls in an accident.
Have a 2011 Journey AWD with 62TE transmission. When transmission is cold, it will be “lazy” to get going after initial start. After a first full stop it’s almost as if it goes into neutral but after revving up slightly it’s as if it kicks into the gear and gets moving. After that it shifts OK and gets smoother as it warms up. One other thing I’ve been noticing when cold is that it won’t creep forward as it does when warm. Had a torque converter replaced about 50k miles ago under warranty. Wondering if fluid is low. I purchased a dipstick and will be checking it next day or so but I would love to hear what you think is causing this. I have an all systems scanner and have no codes what so ever. Thanks in advance.
Nothing that I have noticed in particular. When it's really cold out and I don't give it a minute to warm up, only odd thing I noticed is a whistle sound once I start driving. Like I said, this is only on the coldest of the cold days but I can't say for sure this is transmission related. I will look into fluid situation next day or so.
May I ask? What was the failure of this transmission? I want to save my 2011 dodge caravan. It was rebuilt at 99000 km by Chrysler under warranty(maybe just tourque converer). It's at 197000 km now and I get a code that put it in limp mode. I changed the fluid and filter and now I get a code for a problem with reverse and the van stalls sometimes when I shift to reverse. Possible problem, maybe the cooler is plugged? Or just go for a rebuild on the whole thing. I can't afford a pro rebuild. Can a novice diy weekend warrior take this on himself. Thanks for the great video.
@@GaryFerraro I measured with my oil dipstick at cold temp and operating temp to get a ball park and it seems in range. It only stalls when in reverse from park.
thank you for the video. question. I am getting the p0740 error on my 2011 town and country. I changed the tcc solenoid. still getting the error. it is shifting hard every now and again at low speeds. I know you would recommend a complete tear down but I don't make a lot. would a new torque converter to resolve the issue? thank you for your assistance on this matter.
I remember R&R-ing and rebulding a thousand Chrysler 413's and 604E Transmissions. Total junk, the cluthes were way to small and burnt up. I heard these are much better. Definitely looks entirely different. How are these in general Gary??
Thanks for the great video. Quick question. the detente arm jumped off before I really understood it. It has a bent end. Does the bent end go toward the front or the rear of the car? (I think the rear) And, does the bent end slide up next to the valve body or does the screw kind of press against it creating a spring loaded adjustment? How far does the screw go in, how much tension? Thanks for your help!
That bolt i believe has a shoulder on it, the bolt goes all the way in, just put the detent in place and tighten the bolt down. Did you see how the roller(other side of the detent) went in with the internal mode switch?
Really interesting teardown, but, honestly, I still don't understand what exactly caused the P0740 code in the first place, can you please explain? Thank you in advance.
Rebuilt one with a reverse shudder caused by a low clutch housing failure and now getting a p0740 code. Drives good and scanner seems to read tcc engaging in 4th. But the code comes back on after a few days of driving. Relearned trans as well as the converter. Any tips or ideas what the issue is?
Hi Gary , great video. I have a 08 caravan with a 62te trans. It was warming up when I heard a pop . I have no codes and no gears at all, all shift positions are like neutral . Any ideas?
I am attempting to rebuild. my question is do I need to remove the differential before taking the input shaft out. I have removed the pump according to the manual but it doesn't have the differential removed to much later in the manual. the shaft appears stuck when pulling on it
The input shaft is attached to the drum, you do not have to remove the diff first, it should pull right out, if there is some damage it may not come out so easy
Gary, great video!! Thanks!! I have a question! How does the transmission fluid get to the torque converter to operate the lock up clutch? There is no obvious path that I can see that is dedicated to operate the clutch.
Hi, where is the serial number located and does it match any numbers on the VIN or other ID plate on the vehicle? Mine is a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan and I suspect the people who say they rebuilt and re-installed my original transmission instead installed a used transmission that has been painted gray for some reason which the rebuilder said he always paints them so people can't swap them out and try to get a refund or some stupid thing like that...Thanks!
Hey Gary I have an important question do you see the bearing under the first plate you removed is that supposed to have any up and down and side to side me movement. I have a 2008 town and country with a 62te and I've been chasing a weird noise that's been coming from the center of the vehicle and I took it all apart looking for what's wrong and found huge amounts of play is it normal?
@@GaryFerraro at 3min 30-40 secs you don't point it out but it's the bearing behind the plate that you pry off. It doesn't really feel rough but you can't spin the entire thing you can only spin the cage of the bearing it has almost a half inch of upwards movement and a quarter inch of side to side movement
Hi! Great information on this trans. I’m curious. If I do a trans swap in my wife’s van, will it need some sort of programming? I’ve seen some places saying that it will. The swap itself is well with my abilities, but this is the newest (most electronics) vehicle I’ve needed to do any major work to.
Do these transmissions come with a pan gasket from the factory. Alot of people use sealant on the cover after a fluid change. Do you recommend using a gasket or sealant? Thanks!!!!
On this trans, there is no "raised" area for the pan gasket to seal, the 2 surfaces are flat, when you use a pan gasket on the flat surface, it usually leaks, for this i would use silicon

@@GaryFerraro Ok thats good thinking I work for Chrysler and our trans tech retired and I have some experience with our 62TE transmissions but not enough and you videos help more then our service library does 👍🏼
Gary, I have a 2016 Ram Promaster 1500 that has this transmission supposedly. There is a harsh banging sensation as I shift from neutral into drive while the van is moving. It happens in about 70% of the time at any speed since bought it used a year ago with 11K miles on it. Any ideal what could be wrong? Harsh going into drive feels as if someone hit the floor under my foot with a baseball bat. Other times its less harsh. And sometimes it's completely smooth like all the other automatic cars I have been shifting in the past 40 years.
Happens on all promasters I have one to it is the trans hiting the control arm. Design flaw, nothing in the tyranny makes the sound. They should upgraded to a stiffer transmission mount to avoid it. I get it if I hit the throttle to hard in reverse. Sounds crazy buts its not a problem. I'm sure if you look around underneath the car you will see were its been hitting. Would suck though if it cracked the bell housing. These transmissions really suck though. So dumb they used the tyranny from jeeps and caravans in a huge van like that.
Gary, 2011 VW Routan going into fail safe mode, but 3rd gear clutch seems burned up as transmission just slips once it's in 3rd gear. Reverse, first and second are fine, and I've gotten it manually into 5th and that is fine. Just pulled the transmission yesterday. Is there a rebuild kit you be recommend? Also, any additional work I should do since I have it out (hope to not need to do that again). Van has 125k miles. Thank you for this great video!!
Hey gerry great teardown as usual. I just did an overhaul on the same trans test drove it has p0740 . Reman conv , new solenoid block and tcc? Do you think it can be faulty conv?
xtremegearheads I would change that line pressure sensor if you have not. They do fail. Doing the solenoid pack and TCM solenoid. When you have the pump out make sure that bypass valve in the case is free. There is a ball and spring in there you can blow air in the small hole make sure it moves
Thanks, Gary. Hey, when installing the UD spring retainer (AKA "balance piston" in the input drum on the 62TE and the 41TE, do you use the special seal protector, Miller P/N 5067, or is it possible to go without it? Also, in your experience, are the reported rough shifts and thuds on the 62TE usually resolved by software updates? If so, can most tranny shops do this, or would it have to go to the dealer? Thanks.
@@GaryFerraro I thought that the software was the problem.Sometimes i shoud be able to understand a bit of the subject but it's hard to understand about automatic transmission so i leave it to a professional specialized in automatic transmission.I wouldn't never try to fix my automatic transmission without knowledge.
Gary could you tell me what would be involved to replace the parking sprag components on a 2014 Caravan 62TE trans? Can it be done without removing the transmission from the vehicle? The unit runs fine except it won't go into park at all. I suspect my staff try putting it in gear before stopping.
@@GaryFerraro Yes it goes to the position but nothing locks in. Otherwise the transmission works normal its just that there is no park. have to use the handbrake. Help from you will allow me to have the mechanic test things first. Thank you.
Steve Marshall well. I never had one that did not go into park. The side cover has to come down but it's not easy to do this Did you watch my tear down video? Can they at least check the cable? I'm out but will be home in a few

What would the issue be if when on an uphill drive the transmission won’t down shift to get me up the hill. I have to press the gas pedal more to get me in overdrive. 2011 grand caravan. Shifting through gears feels good. Not faults.
@@GaryFerraro it kicks down fine as long as I am producing the kick down. But I constantly have to produce the kick down through out the drive. It’s almost like it has a dead spot like it get stuck in costing. I’m not sure if that make sense.
I checked the fluid level just in case and that checks out. The speed that it levels out at is 45 mph then if you press the gas pedal it doesn’t feel like it’s move with the amount pressing and it requires me to get it to kick down. I was watching the output speed sensor readings and they seemed jumpy like it would go from 1 to 30 not a smooth transition. One other thing I am not sure if it’s normal is in drive or in park at idle I here a solenoid sound like it’s turning on and off? Double checked on the faults and nothing. @@donmalay5345 Could be tricky, side cover would have to come down, pan dropped and filter removed, there are 3 pipes that go from the valvebody to the trans, to make it easier i remove the linkage but it can be done without removing the linkage, if you do the job, change the TCC solenoid too, they go bad all the time.
@@GaryFerraro hey Gary I have a 2013 Dodge caravan.... Mine is leaking from the solenoid... Cover.???... You think it can just be a gasket... Or does it Evan have a gasket when you take off that cover we're the solenoids at?
Hi Gary I have a question for you. My wife’s 2016 grand caravan with 66000 miles kicked up a P083B also it is slipping really bad and the trans fluid is high on the dipstick. Would the pressure sensor cause all of that? Thanks
When the code set, the trans probably went into failsafe that may be the slipping, possible the solenoid pack is no good. Can you clear the code? Not sure why the fluid level shows overfull unless someone added the code will not cause that. This trans has a dipstick or do you have the "tool" to measure fluid level?
Gary Ferraro, thanks for you quick response. I reset the code and it comes right back. To add it drives and sounds great for about a minute or two. I bought the van 4 months ago from carmax so it could have been a little overfilled since I got it. I used the oil dipstick trick to measure the level. Thanks so much in advance I appreciate all your help I don’t know anyone personally knowledgeable to ask. Great video too by the way I learned a ton of knowledge
Your videos still only come up as 360P max resolution. How are you exporting those? What are you using to edit these? BTW, i rebuilt my 722.6 valve body without issues thanks to your other videos!
+Ivan WNY When i do a higher resolution its telling theres not enough room, and it stops the process and tells me to choose a lower resolution. Any ideas? Good job on that valvebody!
This video answered my question. About how to get the selanoid out . leave it to a professional. The transmission is still in the pacifica. Can that be done in car?
Gary Ferraro I've got the valve body loose but have not pulled the shift rod . I'll have to watch that part of the video to see if I want to go that far.
Hey Gary, I have a 62TE in a '11 Town and Country that has started slipping when going into 2nd, and shuddering when going into 3rd some times. It also jumps around some times when downshifting under wide open throttle like it doesn't know what to do. Pulled codes and have a P1790 Fault Immediately after shift, P0732 Gear Ratio Error in 2nd, and P0792 Compounder Speed Ratio Error. Fluid looks good on level and color/odor, any ideas? think this is mechanical? Nice video btw, will use it if I have to rebuild! Thanks in advance!
Had a feeling that would be the case. Reverse is okay, has always had a shudder some times when in it and backing up, everything I have read on it said that was a normal occurrence. Thanks for the quick reply, I'll let you know what I find!
This code will not clear unless you reset the V.L.P Counter and then clear the code. This code usually comes with another code. The 1745 is informational only code. Do you know anyone with a snap-on scan tool?
Thanks for the 62te videos! I'm going to study them while I rebuild mine on a 2011 Grand Caravan. Do you have any recommendations on where to buy parts? Also are there any beefed up parts that I should put in there to make it last a million+ miles? The engine's great, everything besides the computer seems to be normal wear and tear items, so I plan on driving this van for a long time, since I just paid it off and don't want another car payment. Thanks again!
@@peterhogan12141 i use TransTec kit and borg warner frictions, if you have trouble finding them, i could help you with parts, You will have to change the low drum, that will need to be updated to the non rotational rings
@@GaryFerraro Thank you so much! I was waiting for my backup Caravan to become available and in the meantime, I've started reconsidering doing the whole job right now. I have a P0740 code which tells me the torque converter is probably bad since I've already replaced the solenoid pack which didn't clear the code. I think if I replace just that and hope for the best, it'll save a lot of time. I could drive it until it breaks again, OR...if you think the whole project can be done by a transmission novice in a reasonable amount of weekend work, I really enjoy new auto repair experiences. What do you recommend? Thanks for your time!
I have 2010 Chrysler town and country with this trans it shifts and drives fine but when hot if I reverse up a incline without throttle it will shake unless i give it more gas which isnt very safe when backing up also doesn't seem to hold itself from rolling forward like it should but will not do it when cold? Reverse seems to work fine anywhere flat. do you have any idea what the issue might be?
@@GaryFerraro yes only does it when hot both reverse and forward but only on hills and no throttle. And yes sometimes while I driving I can hear a slight whine coming from the transmission mainly when speeding up I just bought this van so I have no idea if the fluid or filter have ever been changed it has 145k miles fluid level looks good and doesn't smell burnt or anything weird. Drives great no issues on flat surfaces just not sure if trying to change the fluid and filter could make it worse.
@@odrix691 With a new filter and fluid really shouldn't get worse, if you do decide to change the filter, i would go with one from the dealer, i only use OE on these units
I’m a GM transmission tech for 15 years but I’ve never been into one of these until my wife’s caravan went down.
your rebuilding the trans yourself?
We are in the same boat sort of. Right now I’ve got the 62TE out of the better half’s Journey apart. I’ve rebuilt many manual transmissions, but this is my first endeavor in an automatic.
Yes I’m a GM transmission tech working for my wife on this one.
whats the problem, Any codes?@@rbbbah
Thanks Gary this is the best video I’ve seen on these and has helped me get my 62TE apart easily. Mine has the classic low drum failure with all teeth broken off. 133k miles and been driving with basically no effective reverse for a couple of years and probably 25 k miles. It was finally time and the weather is nice.
Ok, glad it was a help, get the updated drum, non-rotational rings
Yes sir, already bought the drum with the updates and non rotational rings.
Hello can i dissasembly the low drum without dissasembly all the 62te? I will repare my journey by myself
Yes, i agree, that was the highest selling overhaul kit.
thank you for your input im 45 year mech but not trans i put the lock up sol in my wifes trans on your advice and it worked .it was dieing at stops ty 30 bucks fixed it
Smo Calhoun Great glad you got it fixed and you did it yourself
Just the fact he stays clean doing this is amazing. I change a light bulb and I look like I fell in an oil tank.
LOL, thanks for watching
Like the Heading to the Video say's. TEARDOWN. Amazing how many parts involved and the order they are in.
Excellent video. He had. 6 part series on the rebuild, which I always follow. So far every one has worked
i forgot to mention that i fix my 750I BMW with your video that show to installing the valve body to case seals . Easy job .
Beautifull and clear disassembly procedure
Thank you sir. Gary
Hard to see a tech nowadays, fantastic job
Thankyou so much Gary!!!! You’ve saved my ass so many times! I really appreciate what you do!

thanks, We are in Houston. We watch your excellent videos.
Ok, well greetings from new york. What problem are you having with your trans
Thanks!! I have this gear in dodge journey 2009. When slow down for traffic or stop sign I feel hard shift when downshifting between 3rd to 2nd . no error codes and working ok. Oil color and level are fine the car is 75k miles. I tried manual shifting from 1-6 up and down without problem.
How long is it doing this? Anything done to the car or trans before this started
Regular maintenance and after market serpentine belt change. It started doing this in last 1000 miles or so.
What i would try first is a quick learn, this is done through a scan tool, it basically resets the shift adapts. There cant be any codes present in trans or engine or it will not adapt.
Thank you very much. Will do and will keep you updated.
Ok sounds good
Yours videos help me again, I teardown a auto Fiat Freemont that come with the same gearbox 62TE, that has a big problem in torque converter. Thanks so much from Brasil.
Anytime my friend, greetings from New York
Gary. Happy new year. I’m working on a 6l50. It was rebuilt by someone else. It slips in and out of 1st gear when I put it in drive. I can drive it manually through all six gears without a problem. If I start off in 1st manually. and shift it to drive it works great. I could use your help
Thank u

any codes present?
Mechanical sorcery man. This is awesome.
Thanks
A new video with HD camera would be nice. Thanks for sharing good work!
Where can a guy learn this trade apprentice? Transmission rebuild guys seem very smart.
A lot of times you just go to a dealer or a shop and ask if they need any help maybe tearing transmissions down
naturally a teacher
Thank you my friend
Good presentation, Gary. Although, for those of us who didn't mark the sprag, it would have been nice if you had demonstrated the sprag rotation when you took things apart.
will keep that in mind, thanks for watching
Thanks Gary for the detailed video! What is the thread size on the pump housing used for the slider hammer? Thanks in advance!
How did that work out?
Love how you upload so frequently, Keep up the good work!!

Symptoms are:
No reverse at all, D or Drive engages but “drops” or loses gear/power shortly after driving a few feet (Seems to always happen once it hits 8-10 mph). This forces me to put it o park and re-engage D or turn off he car and start it again to re-engage D.
These symptoms can be duplicated every time with no exception or randomness.
Any suggestions? I am hoping to repair myself. Is there a specific kit or part you would recommend? Thanks!!

You probably have a problem with the Overdrive clutch pack, this pack gets applied in 4th gear
nice video and you are very profesional
Thank you and thanks for watching
great vid, I'm getting these errors in my Routan:
P0733 - Gear 3: Incorrect Ratio
P0734 - Gear 4: Incorrect Ratio
P0792 - SAE - Intermediate Shaft Sensor A: Range/Performance
Could it be a sensor or are we looking at mechanical?
Thanks!
What happens when it shifts to 3rd? does it shift or does it seem like it goes to neutral?
Gary Ferraro shifting appears fine until it goes back into limp. Reverse seems under powered though and takes a few seconds longer to engage than normal.
That 792 code usually points to the compounder assembly inside the trans. Have you checked the fluid level in the trans?
the fluid wasn't low, I changed the filter and refilled with +4 back to the proper level/temp. No burning smell or major metal wear was showing in the pan. Magnet had some fuzz but nothing in excess and pan didn't have much as in sludge.
Gary Ferraro Gary i have the same three code you believe compounder is issue
When you take of the 2" nut on the drive transfer gear do you have to tap the indentations out or will it simply come off with the an Air Impact Gun? Also I am having trouble with the 3 mm manual shaft retainer pin screw. It seems to be stripped out. Any suggestions? Thanks
Nicely done... I'm actually going to put this tear down video to the test soon.. I have a 62TE with 125k on it that is shuttering everyday and it's not getting any better...I don't have $4500 for a shop. Sooo, I've done old school 727s, C4. Etc. This one will be a challenge..

Hello Gary P0740 TCC SOLENOID CIRCUIT OPEN Why do you think replacing the solenoid pack wouldn't fix this error code?
The TCC solenoid is the one just above the solenoid pack.
@@GaryFerraro Hi Gary sorry I never saw your response on this one! As you noticed from my comment on your other video it wasn't the TCC SOLENOID. Thanks for your amazing videos. They have helped me a lot when speaking with transmission shops!

Do you need to adjust any clearances if you change the diff cover? The one on mine is cracked and I need the replace it.

Do you have the special tool to check fluid level? If it holds in park axles should be ok. where are you located
If the fluid is way up on the stick(special tool) that would mean the pump is bad
I bought New a 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan - 3.6L v6 Pentastar & 6spd -62TE - auto trans
and have had nothing but problems with the transmission
has 23,000 kilometers and the Torque Converter was replaced before 20,000km
and it still bangs into D or Reverse.
They replaced the converter because of the bangs into D & R?
No they replaced it because at 18-22 km/hr going dowhill it would bang /clunk shift.
And they mechanic took the tranny pan off and found clutch material all inside the pan.
So they replaced the torque converter & and compounder etc.
It's actually back in their as we speak. Still bangs reverse to drive. Just dropped it off today.
Let me know how it goes, the common clutch for reverse and drive is the Low/Reverse clutch, did they look at axles or maybe mounts, how does it drive otherwise, upshifts and downshifts?
Hello Gary,
You said let you know how it went at Chrysler/Dodge after i got my car back.
-I just got my 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan back from my local Dodge Dealer this week May 16th 2017
after i told them the car when warmed up a bit will clunk/bang in Reverse and even drive. More reverse.
When the car is cool or just started up & the temperature is not off the peg you will get relatively smooth/normal engagement of the gears.
-They told me they could not replicate the problem. But did a re-learn on the software , which made no difference.
- So i went back to talk to the service manager because the transmission specialist mechanic was either
busy or didn't want to look at it.
-We tried a few other vans on the lot, 2013 and some of them were a little rough....but nothing like ours is
when placed in reverse when it decides to shudder/clunk/bang.
Car presentley has 23,000km on it as of May 18th , 2017
back in September , 2016 @ 19,000km the Dodge Dealer after a test drive with me & the transmission mechanic & telling them the car is clunking /banging at 18-22km/hr randomly.
They pulled the pan found clutch material in the fluid of the pan
(this is 4 years after me insisting there was a problem)
They Replaced at that time:
-the Torque Converter
-UnderDrive Compounder
-Internal Transmission Seals
-Replaced Transmissio Filter
-Complete Replacement of All Fluid
-New Axle Seals
-Re-Learn again on the transmission
Any ideas or suggestions would be great. I have till june 30th 2017 until my warranty is up.

Im in New York on Long Island. Have you changed anything yet?
Hi Gary. Chrysler Grand Voyager 2008 2.8 diesel. Box 62TE. It has 1790, 0732, 0735, 0795. Replaced valve block - errors remained. What ideas? Thank .
Something inside the transmission, what type of scan tool do you have?. Solenoid pack will not fix this problem.
@@GaryFerraro On board abrites. Box inside the clean, no degradation products. Oil is not burned. Mileage 80,000 miles. First, third and fourth - all is well. The second and fifth turn on for two seconds and the box falls in an accident.
Смотри и Делай Can you see data on the scan tool
so what caused the transmission lockout related to P0740? i must have missed somewhere during the video. Anyone?
There are a few things that can cause this , valvebody, converter, solenoid, worn bushing in the pump
I would check the fluid first for sure. When you start this up and its cold out do you hear any hydraulic noise coming from the trans?
Do you have the measuring tool to make sure it's full? When you drive the car it stalls when coming to a stop?
@@GaryFerraro I measured with my oil dipstick at cold temp and operating temp to get a ball park and it seems in range. It only stalls when in reverse from park.
thank you for the video. question. I am getting the p0740 error on my 2011 town and country. I changed the tcc solenoid. still getting the error. it is shifting hard every now and again at low speeds. I know you would recommend a complete tear down but I don't make a lot. would a new torque converter to resolve the issue? thank you for your assistance on this matter.
could be a converter problem, also could be a problem in the pump area such as a worn bushing
I remember R&R-ing and rebulding a thousand Chrysler 413's and 604E Transmissions. Total junk, the cluthes were way to small and burnt up. I heard these are much better. Definitely looks entirely different. How are these in general Gary??
Gary, looks like you're located on Long Island? Know anyone closer to central NY that's reputable?

Things that can cause this code are, the lock-up solenoid, converter itself or even a worn pump bushing. I think the converter was the problem
Any ideas?
First thing to do is check your axles, if there ok than something inside the trans snapped
Hello, Any plans on making a rebuild video for the 62TE ?
Mike,
I will keep that in mind, currenty i do not have any to rebuild.
The oil pressure comes from inside the input shaft
@@AndreGesztiMonteiro The oil is released through the input shaft, the clutch inside the torque converter is self activating.
What time in the video? Does the bearing feel rough when you turn it?
@@GaryFerraro at 3min 30-40 secs you don't point it out but it's the bearing behind the plate that you pry off. It doesn't really feel rough but you can't spin the entire thing you can only spin the cage of the bearing it has almost a half inch of upwards movement and a quarter inch of side to side movement
I just went and check the amount of play in it like about half of what I said in the first reply
@@GaryFerraro i was thinking maybe the plate Is supposed to push the inside of the bearing in to tighten it up but I'm not 100 percent sure

Hi! Great information on this trans. I’m curious. If I do a trans swap in my wife’s van, will it need some sort of programming? I’ve seen some places saying that it will. The swap itself is well with my abilities, but this is the newest (most electronics) vehicle I’ve needed to do any major work to.
No reprogramming required
Do these transmissions come with a pan gasket from the factory. Alot of people use sealant on the cover after a fluid change. Do you recommend using a gasket or sealant? Thanks!!!!
On this trans, there is no "raised" area for the pan gasket to seal, the 2 surfaces are flat, when you use a pan gasket on the flat surface, it usually leaks, for this i would use silicon
Thank you
when i took the valve body of while in the car.. as i pulled it away from the case , a round cylinder about 13/32 x 3/8 with two grooves on the o.d. fell on the ground.. don't know where it goes.. please help. thanks
Can you send a picture to my e-mail, gsferraro@yahoo.com Im thinking its an accumulator but i want to make sure, is it aluminum?
FOUND THE problme with the 62te over drive check ball missing in new valve body but now it go good until 4 gear getting code po734 this one kicking my butt
So now you have P0734?
What actually happens for the code to set? flared shift?
took the direct drum out and air check it ,took it apart to air check the pistions boltom drum working good my question is on the underdrives the drum with the pistion and pistion houseing , does it go up stright when air is applied because the one i am working with is going up sideways looks like only one side is pushing on the clutches
I would say it shouldnt go sideways, no. That drum pretty much the same as a 604
Any reason to why you take out the final drive first? Or just habbit?
Once the final drive is out i stand the case on the bench for acess to valvebody and internals, rebuilding the unit i install final drive last

I have a 2011 Grand Caravan that needs a parking pawl is this something I could do myself and do you have any videos showing how to do this?
did you disconnect the cable at the transmission to confirm no park, also does the linkage go into park?
Hey, anyone deal with a snapped snap ring abd loss of 4th and 5th gears in a 62te AWD from a 2014 Journey?
Gary, 2011 VW Routan going into fail safe mode, but 3rd gear clutch seems burned up as transmission just slips once it's in 3rd gear. Reverse, first and second are fine, and I've gotten it manually into 5th and that is fine. Just pulled the transmission yesterday. Is there a rebuild kit you be recommend? Also, any additional work I should do since I have it out (hope to not need to do that again). Van has 125k miles. Thank you for this great video!!
What codes are you getting?

Hey gerry great teardown as usual. I just did an overhaul on the same trans test drove it has p0740 . Reman conv , new solenoid block and tcc? Do you think it can be faulty conv?
xtremegearheads very well could be. How was the pump bushing?
It looked ok. I didnt change it. It had p0734 and p0841. If i need to pull out again should we change bush and another conv ?
xtremegearheads yes change our converter and install new pump bushing
@@GaryFerraro thanks gary..... looks like its coming back just got the call. Pump bush and conv . Do you think anything else??
xtremegearheads I would change that line pressure sensor if you have not. They do fail. Doing the solenoid pack and TCM solenoid. When you have the pump out make sure that bypass valve in the case is free. There is a ball and spring in there you can blow air in the small hole make sure it moves
i put the one piece bushings in the 62te haven't had ant repercussions at all

Thanks, Gary. Hey, when installing the UD spring retainer (AKA "balance piston" in the input drum on the 62TE and the 41TE, do you use the special seal protector, Miller P/N 5067, or is it possible to go without it? Also, in your experience, are the reported rough shifts and thuds on the 62TE usually resolved by software updates? If so, can most tranny shops do this, or would it have to go to the dealer? Thanks.
I use a feeler gauge when needed to install the piston. Usually a "quick learn" may resolve any rough shifting, never had to do a software update
@@GaryFerraro Why not?

Gary could you tell me what would be involved to replace the parking sprag components on a 2014 Caravan 62TE trans? Can it be done without removing the transmission from the vehicle? The unit runs fine except it won't go into park at all. I suspect my staff try putting it in gear before stopping.
So the shifter will not go into park?
@@GaryFerraro Yes it goes to the position but nothing locks in. Otherwise the transmission works normal its just that there is no park. have to use the handbrake. Bangs casings with ballpeen hammer...then proceeds to pry against mating surfaces. Amazing tutorial for acceptable methods and practices. Lol.
What would the issue be if when on an uphill drive the transmission won’t down shift to get me up the hill. I have to press the gas pedal more to get me in overdrive. 2011 grand caravan. Shifting through gears feels good. Not faults.
How far are you stepping down on the gas pedal, depending how far may or may not kickdown
@@GaryFerraro it kicks down fine as long as I am producing the kick down. But I constantly have to produce the kick down through out the drive. It’s almost like it has a dead spot like it get stuck in costing. I’m not sure if that make sense.
@@robzlrclub93 I ay have asked this, Any codes? engine or trans?
@@GaryFerraro no codes only light on is a tpms, unless it needs some type of software update?
I checked the fluid level just in case and that checks out. The speed that it levels out at is 45 mph then if you press the gas pedal it doesn’t feel like it’s move with the amount pressing and it requires me to get it to kick down. I was watching the output speed sensor readings and they seemed jumpy like it would go from 1 to 30 not a smooth transition. One other thing I am not sure if it’s normal is in drive or in park at idle I here a solenoid sound like it’s turning on and off? Double checked on the faults and nothing. Motor mount deff have a lot of play. Thanks again for any response
Gary, I have a 2008 Grand Caravan which has a P0755 code shift solenoid malfunction will replacing the solenoid pack fix this issue and can it be done without dropping the transmission.
Yes, it can be done with out dropping the trans, very tricky. Is this something you would do yourself?
Thank you for the quick reply, I was thinking about it I'm overseas and don't trust some of these Korean shops. I'm told that I need a rebuild.
