  • This 2014 Dodge Pro-master transmission has 500,000 miles om it, and the problem was really just the converter. I open and teardown the unit. The vehicle was brought to me from upstate NY. All went well with the rebuild

    Hey Gary,
I watched your video on the 62TE rebuild. My 2009 Town and Country was driving down the road cruising. When the engine rpm’s started to climb to near red line. No noise came from the transmission. It has park and neutral and no codes. I’m thinking maybe the splines in the torque converter may have stripped out. Do you think I’m on the right idea with the torque converter? And do you think I should do a rebuild right away? Or do you have any other ideas of what it could be? The vehicle has 220k miles and has a MOPAR rebuilt transmission installed in 2016. There is at least 60k miles that I put on this vehicle.

Hi Gary great vids! i made the mistake and didnt bring my 2016 PM into a local Indy shop and brought it to Dealer for a trans replacement. The factory replacement has been a nightmare. within the first 500 miles I needed a new Trans cooler, and After about 2000 miles it started to have a problem were it shifts from 1st into 2nd very hard, and then gets suck in 2nd gear and will not upshift. Sometime pulling over and turning van on and off seems to reset things but recently on a pretty hot day this technique didnt work. I got it towed back to dealer and 2 hours later i started it up and it shifted and drove normally around the block. I left it with dealer. If I use the tiptronic transmission and keep it high rpms basically shift it for max power and keep it juiced with gas it doesn't have that issue. This makes me feel right about my decision to change trans oil on my 2019 Caravan at 40K instead of OEM published 60K interval (powertrain warranty also expires at 60K ;) I bought a used rental, and reverse slips a little uphill, and gear 2 or 3 occasionally upshifts hard......it's still under warranty, but I'm scared to let a dealer touch it unless it's un-questionably broken. On a clutch application chart, I'm suspicious of trouble in the L/R clutch....what does L/R mean? Supplemental trans oil coolers yay or nay? any suggestions?

just serviced my 2017 dodge grand caravan, with 65,000 miles... there was normal clutch debris on the magnet in the pan, no driveability issues with the vehicle, but in the pan, on the magnet I found 2 pieces of hard metal. not very big pieces abt 3 mm x 3 mm... kind of shiny. wondering where these may have came from, ive heard there is sometimes torque convertor failures on the 62te transmissions,, transmission shifts great, no noises,,, also ive read that the 62TE trans tend to start having failures at around 75,000 miles,, is this what you are seeing? I could see them having issues at 75,000 IF the filter and fluid isnt changed at 60,.000 miles, because the magnet is full and cant hold anymore clutch material, and then then filter would get clogged and starve the pump. if I knew what I know now as far as clutch material on the magnet, I would have serviced my trans at 30,000 miles instead of the chrysler recommended 60,000 miles. I replaced filter with a PROGAURD filter and Mopar type 4 fluid.

Hello Gary, I have a 2012 Chrysler Town and Country with 100k miles. It recently broke down and would drive for a little bit when in drive and then rmps go up and it will not move. I have a hard fault P0470 Torque converter clutch solenoid circuit and I can audibly hear a noise coming from the bell housing. The fluid level was good so I pulled the pan, there was no metal in the pan. Could the solenoid cause it to do that or do you think the torque converter needs to be replaced. Any advise would be appreciated.

    • @GaryFerraro
      @GaryFerraro  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

What it sounds like to me is the main filter is clogging up, probably because the converter clutch had come apart. If the solenoid was bad, then the car would stall on engagement or shutter and stall when coming to a stop

Limit 62TE to 4 when in town traffic, good or bad idea ?
intuitively I assume that the gearbox wears out with every gear change.
is the converter less used if I choose that ?
Manufacturers prefer a computer model where the car shifts 200 times and consumes one thimble less on a test run to show good results on paper.
Not me. I prefer a simple gearbox that holds 250 miles.
is doing 4-> 1 at each stop less violent for the gear box than doing 5-> 1? is there any way to find out which gear is engaged ?
Thank's Gary for sharing your knwoledge :-) !

You the MAN ! Really appreciate your knowledge and willingness to share it. Bless you. Question; I recently got a 2011 Caravan with 335K miles - amazing condition. TCC solenoid was bad, replaced it with filter and fluid. Old fluid look very good and magnet had a light coat of fuzz (looked good). It seemed to me that the pan seals were factory (never serviced?) After solenoid replacement, the TC chatters on engagement. I added friction mods with limited improvement. In the last 2k-3k mile the chatter has increased and now I detect slip w/ chatter at high load in 5 and 6th. I suspect TC clutch. I'm satisfied with not changing the trans but plan on a TC replace. The question is should I change the pump? I hear a light whine even with the new filter in neutral and light rev - sometime I'm not sure I can hear it. I would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions.

Hello! I drive a 2014 Ram Promaster 3.6 gas. I have 567,201 on the original transmission. Everything was fine until my engine had a misfire on cylinder 4. I had to switch my shifter into manual mode so I could keep the gear I needed to go up hills because my engine had loss of power. I put approximately a 100 miles on it with me manually shifting when needed. I had another engine Installed. Now my transmission doesn't shift into 6th gear. It shifts pretty good up to 5th, but then just stays there. It's a 62TE transmission. It didn't shift at all at first but the found a wire not clipped in for the turbine speed. I took off and it was shifting, but stops at 5th gear. It also shutters when I let off the gas in 5th gear. If I let off easy it doesn't. My mechanic did the relearn several times and it didn't do anything. Do you have any idea what could be wrong?? Also, are all 64TE transmissions the same? They want double or triple for a Promaster 64TE. I can get a low mileage 64TE for around $800. We are worried that maybe the gear ratios might be different and maybe the CV axles won't fit in. I do know one thing. I know a guy on our Promaster forum that put a 3.6 Pentastar engine out of a different vehicle in his Promaster and it works just fine. And we were told that it won't work. But it does. Thank you for any information. I have subscribed! Randy.

I believe Dodge says the fluid will last for 100k.
But I'm doing mine now and it has 80k whitch I think is a stretch

Im expediter as well I had to buy 2014 promaster because Mercedes sprinter diesel blue tec almost pushed me in to bankruptcy with all emission related repairs. After all engine sized on hwy with no warnings no oil losses no over heating just smoothly sized up on hwy . Any way my 2014 pm got aprox 200k on it lost torque converter lock up and p740 code just showed up otherwise oil very clean no shifting issues all smooth ..just not locking up ..any good advice ....did check oil level is all normal .I was Honda tech while ago so maintenance is not issues or repairs.thx

That code is usually the converter itself, the clutch inside the converter is probably coming apart

@@GaryFerraro I expected it..I greatly appreciate your time and quick response....I'm thinking about replacing solenoid pack as well but I'm positive it's all well with it..as it fells all normal . Gary Thank you very much keep it safe out there.

@@srhondapro38 Welcome, solenoid pack is a little tricky to do. If you drop the trans for the converter, drop the pan and change fluid and filter as well

@@GaryFerraro I will take your advice... I will drop it then all replaced as u mentioned. I can't afford another failure after merceds as I'm still paying of sprinter, awful situation.. Tons work on mercedes I preformed, manifold s black death prevention number of engine leaks all updated and then best fluids. I'm picky as ex honda tech dpf nox u name its done all ...back to my saviour promaster . Currently fluid has about 40k and still red..level I did adjust little bit. I use all top notch fluids so all should be internally healthy clutches seals and my driving is technically perfect.... Lol.. I know when will shift befor computer does it.. Lol.... Actually I don't like some of shift points and lock up's... Kinda like it now with out lock up... Mpg is still good but I'm Easy on it. THX again
