Yes! Right now ive been using L-ascorbic, Azaleic acid (prescription), and mineral Spf 50 daytime , and Tret 0.1% at night. Still need several months to see if my melasma fades
@@midlifemom5829 Hi 👋🏽, I have melasma as well and my skincare routine has really helped me manage it successfully. I use Timeless Vitamin C, Obagi Clear (prescription), Tretinoin 0.1%, and an avobenzone-free chemical sunscreen from Europe that contains Phenylethyl Resorcinol. I top it all off with a tinted mineral sunscreen that has DNA-repair enzymes. I haven't had any issues with melasma in over a year now! I should mention that I only use the Obagi Clear product once a year, and it lasts for about 3 months with daily use. For the other 9 months, I use Obagi Clear FX (non-prescription). 💛
I’m a guy and for 3 months used the Geek & Gorgeous 0.1% A-Game with their power peptides serum. What a difference in my skin. They now make a 0.2% Retinal at a brilliant price.
I second. Geek&gorgeous A-game is a great retinal, you can start with 0.05 % and work your way up to 0.2 %. And I actually prefer their C-glow over skinceuticals. There, I’ve said it. Their peptide serum is waiting in my drawer, I can’t wait for my current one to run out, though I really really like it. EDIT: can>can’t correction
I knew early on that eye creams are never worth it. I finally bought my first eye serum with the BOJ ginseng eye serum after seeing it mentioned so many times on TH-cam. I have always avoided my eye area because my fave Olay retinol moisturizer stung my eyes. BOJ eye serum changed that for me. In short, if you have issues with retinol around your eyes like me, try an eye serum with retinol.
I would love to see a video about what products to use in what order for morning and nighttime. My skin has been naturally good until this year and now I’m developing wrinkle sand blemishes on my dry skin.
Absolutely worth the spend on Medik8 Crystal Retinal, my sensitive reactive skin can’t tolerate tretinon, my dermatologist recommended Medik8 Crystal Retinal 1, it took me 6months to build from once a week to every night, but it is so worth it, not only can I actually use a retinal which I never thought I could but my skin has shown so much improvement, I use for signs of ageing, my other semi spurge is Naked Sundays 100% Mineral Sunscreen, my skin loves this sunscreen and it does not like many, and it’s so beautiful to use, it actually replaced my tinted moisturiser and foundation as well as being a beautiful sunscreen, it’s like a little tint a little coverage a little blurring and my skin but better. The rest of my skin care is from local pharmacy using products again recommended by my derm, my skin has never looks better, I spend less on skin care even with my 2 spurge and semi spurge products, and get compliments on my skin looking flawless (a big change to a few years ago pre dermatologist referral). Loving your videos Dr Sam and find your advise in line with my own derm Dr Ann.
Timeless vitamin C serum is so good too. 26 $ CAD for 1 oz. It's the maximum I wanna go for a serum. I store it in the fridge to slow down the oxidation since it has almost the same formulation as the skinceuticals one. I got the 10% and I am working my way up for the 20% in few months 😉
Geek & gorgeous c-glow is amazing and so affordable! High strength Vit c + ferulic + vit e - perfect formula such great value! The ordinary is a must mention. Both of them have a fab retinal & glycolic too. As for red light - Stylpro has a new one for £99 in uk and is top level led all the right wavelengths. You don’t need to spend loads.
9:22 I have to share- I burn easily and WHEN I TELL YOU I FOUND THE ONE FOR ME…! I started using Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics SPF50++. Not only does it moisturize my face most of the day-it provides me that SPF I need living in a sunny state! ☀️ ALSO, I traveled to Greece and used this, (although applied it twice a day as I was constantly in the sun) and didn’t even slightly burn ONCE. Which is huge for my skin as I nearly always do if I slip up even once! If you haven’t yet-check out this moisturizer. And it’s so affordable for what it does!!! Moisturizer and sunscreen?? Yes please
I typically only splurge ($50-$60 at most) on moisturizer - I just love the experience of a plush moisturizer. Eadem’s Cloud Cushion is my all-time fave. I also love the Dr. Dennis Gross peels… BUT I stock up on them only when they go on sale (usually Sephora has awesome discounts during Black Friday).
The price per oz/ml is so real. I'm still studying and don't have stable income, so spending 20+ bucks on a skincare product is already a lot for me. I was so hesitant to buy my first K-beauty product because of the price, but then I realized that some of the sizes are so big I would actually spend more buying 'more affordable' smaller products (like stuff from the Ordinary, which I still love) than when buying one big product thus spending more at once
I have been using City Beauty products. Have you heard of them? I heard good and bad about them. I am interested in a good retinol body lotion. Can you recommend some? Thanks so much. Ilene
This might be a controversial opinion, but I never spend money on a first cleanse, i.e. a cleansing balm or formulated cleansing oil. I use a mixture of castor oil and jojoba oil as my first cleanse (and Prequel's Gleanser as my second!) and it works amazingly well, removes all of my makeup and sunscreen and leaves my skin so soft. This mixture is way less expensive than pretty much any pre-packaged cleansing balm or oil out there and works just as well, if not better.
Your viideos are so informative as well as practical. I'm vision-impaired, so I'm reliant upon hearing a clear narrative. My splurge has and will always continue to be, sunscreen. No question. Still, sunscreens have come a long way, and you shouldn't have to pay too much, to be able to still get reliable results. Any sunscreen is only as effective as the consistency and amount with which it's applied. I've been using an SPF daily, since I was in my teens, and I'm about to turn 52. I remember being teased in high school about my fixation with applyng 'sun cream' versus slathering myself in baby oil. I'd far rather continue to strive for prevention, rather than 'perfection'.
I have seven nieces all but one are in their twenties. All will be receiveing Prequel for Xmas this year. I love it and to me there's something for everyone. I'm super appreciative of the quality and affordability of your brand.
That's actually so sweet 😊 my relatives usually stick to giving us money now because they don't want to buy something unnecessary for us, but it's still nice to receive something you can physically hold (although I'm obviously grateful for the money)
@johanaantonova740 Aw, thank you. I usually do give them gift cards, too. Everyone is so busy these day, things aren't easy for anyone but I know younger ppl are dealing with alot right now. I thought maybe making them a little basket of the basics like the gleanser (which I freaking love) would maybe help to remind them to take a little time out for themselves. A little self care. Thank you btw, your comment was so sweet and appreciated.
Tell me more about full body skin care! The lotion I love most is Kheil’s Crème de Corps, but it is so pricey! Often I settle for Nivea’s Skin Firming or Gold Bond’s Ultimate Healing. I’d love guidance on what ingredients to look for and what to avoid in terms of full body skin care.
Dr. Sam, is it possible to get vitamin C in a form of a face cream/moisturizer? Do you have some recommendations? I don't like how serums feel on my skin, they give me this sticky sensation so I am not likely to use them. Thank you for all the work that you do 😊
I fully agree on getting some affordable skincare items. It's so worth it and unnecessary to spend esp on cleansers, moisturizers, sunscreen. You are 100% right. I think certain serums or creams that are focusing on issues are worth it. I love your cleanser and C. I used Maelove for awhile. It's very nice but your line is just WOW and I LOVE that it's affordable. You can have terrific skin with affordable skincare. Ppl don't understand this. You do need to wear sunscreen and a wide brim hat though :))
I have been using the Prequel balm as my eye cream. It has made such a difference in moisturizing my eye area. My eye area is always irritated due to eczema. My eyes have stopped itching. Thank you again for Prequel. Also, the ointment balm was helpful with eczema on the lips, but it was too far to gone, and I needed to actually use medical ointment. But once my lips are back to normal, I will be using the ointment again for my lips. So many of your products are worth it.
Please do athletes skincare, if one has to wash more than once a day...going by bike and working out during the day, when to wash your face and which products to use when?
My skin can't do without acids. Try as I might to not use Sunday Riley's Good Genes, it's the single most effective product in my routine. I also love Benefit's Shrink Wrap. I have found cleaners and serums don't have a large effect, but for me, moisturizer does. Dior Capture Totale is The One.
My cleanser is 20 bucks and I use it for approximately 6-8 months or more on an everyday basis. Here in Germany this is an absolute splurge because people buy cleansers for 3-6 Eur from the drugstore. I always try to buy more elevated but also hypoallergenic formulas and once I find something I will stick for it. It is so freeing! I love skincare but I have rosacea and 99, 9% of products are not great for me.
I love your Prequel sunscreen 🧴 I just purchased the Allies Moisturizer. Thank you Doc for given the best recommendations !! LOVE ALL the PREQUEL products!!
Thank you Dr. Ellis! Over the years, I have bought ingrediencies used in high-end skincare and DIYed my own to save money. Watching your videos, I've started wondering whether it's actually harmful for me to put all of these ingrediencies into either an inexpensive toner or a cream (according to each of their own recommended utilization ratios). Here's a list of these ingrediencies: Allantoin,SY-DP9, PPG-9 DIGLYCERYL ETHER, VC-IP (ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate), Alpha Arbutin, SK-influx® V MB by Evonik, Ceramide 3, SymCalmin, Dragocalm, SymRelief100, 7-Dehydrocholesterol, ACTIValoe Aloe Vera Gel 10X, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (and) Phytosterols (and) Tocopheryl Acetate (and) Bisabolol, D-panthenol USP, Primalhyal 3K(hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid), JUVENESSENCE AD(Algae extract), Vitamin E, Ectoin natural, Retinol 50C, Repair complex CLR-PF.
Hello, how are you? I love having multiple steps in my skincare routine, though I know it’s not really necessary. So, here’s what I’m thinking: I’ll choose a brand I like, that’s accessible where I live, and that won’t make me hesitant to buy products, especially sunscreen, and then I’ll stick to that brand for my routine. I know this approach isn’t exactly dermatologist-approved, but I love fragrances, nice scents, and glass packaging-all that kind of thing. I find all of this in L’Oréal products. I can balance them with tretinoin, and another brand I really like is Nivea. I think they have great products, very moisturizing, very tolerable for sensitive skin, with long-lasting hydration. Their sunscreens are easy to spread, which is especially convenient for me since I have a short beard. I’d rather combine products this way than spend more and feel hesitant to use the moisturizer, serum, or sunscreen, or restrict my routine so much that it feels boring, making me lose motivation to stick to it. Greetings from Brazil 😊!
@ I had it done in lancaster, PA. A nurse withdraws the blood and separates the plasma with a machine. The plasma is put in you skin by a aesthetician while microneedling with a pen. It is great but expensive and worth the money if you can afford it. Never look for deals to do this treatment.
Love your honesty here. Two products I love (both in the save category) are the Lubriderm Advanced Moisture Therapy Unscented with pro-ceramides, and the Garnier Ombrelle Complete SPF 60 sunscreen with mexoryl. Both are drugstore products (Shoppers here in Canada), both are marketed as body but I find they work fine on my face too. They work well under the makeup I use too, which includes the Sephora house brand skin tint.
Thank you for your great content, Dr. Ellis. I heard you mention growth factors but I don’t believe you talked about them. Do you think the good ones, such as Neogenesis are worth the hefty price?
There is a product by Pond's called Rejuveness that is just like the Sunday Riley Good Genes. The first or second ingredient is Lactic Acid. It's just as good and much cheaper.
Really? Because Good Genes is amazing but soon expensive. I have one bottle of Good Genes left. I stacked discounts and coupons to get 2 for the price of one.
Great video ! I ordered the Allies of Skin multi functional product. Always looking for products to do several things at one time! Thanks for your great informative advice. I use some spendy ones from Derm's office and not so spendy ones also.
Can you talk about using Hydroquinone and other actives together? I already use it every other night with my Tretinoin and a layer of vanicream,, but can I use it with Vit C, Peptides, cica? What about skipping then vanicream and using a moisturizing oil like squalan e?
I’ve always been a skeptic about pricy skincare and you’ve confirmed it. A lot of the claims in ads showing young women are a con. I use the basics from the pharmacy or supermarket, and retinol my doctor prescribed. That will have to do. Companies prey on women’s insecurities to sell their expensive overpriced lotions and potions.
If you haven't talked about fungal acne on the face and scalp then please do, it makes skincare so hard for me as a dry skin person. Also what I do with sunscreen to save money is that I use a face sunscreen I love for my face alone and use a comfortable body sunscreen for my neck and chest area.
Great video! Just splurged on the AOS moisturizer a few days ago, excited you think it it’s worth it. Definitely agree Prequel vitamin C is top notch and cannot wait to repurchase 🤞🏻 black Friday sale. I invested in a red light mask and don’t use it nearly enough to make it worth the splurge. Someone help me with consistency tips. Pregnancy flares my rosacea so badly so I know it would actually help. Stratia has some amazing products and not nearly enough hype, their moisturizes are phenomenal.
I’m using your line & absolutely 😊 love it! I too use to expensive products, thought they were the only ones that really worked, we’re still told that! I’m saving money on good products
All her videos are so educational to me! I’ve learned so much about my skin (and others’ actually too) and how to navigate everything skincare 0ver the past year thanks to this lovely brilliant lady. I continue to learn everyday thanks to her educational derm content and I am all here for it. ❤
Dr Ellis, I just purchased the DR Dennis peel pads, extra strength. I am currently using a tretinoin prescription. How can I work these peel pads into my routine? Is it recommended not to use the peel pads the same night I’m using tretinoin?
Thanks for the great video Dr. Sam! I always loved and used drug store SPF, there are so many that work and are reasonably priced. My new love is ISDIN's tinted mineral SPF 50. I never thought I'd spend that kind of money but it's so effective, elegant, lightweight, my skin but better. Total game changer. Speaking of save or splurge, have you heard of TRUology skincare? They have a 20% THD Serum with other skin brightening antioxidants that's fantastic. It's not cheap though, it's $132. They also have a retinAL .2% serum, also pricey... Wanted to know your thoughts!
Sunscreen and moisturizer are very much an individual preference, my daughter hates anything that is a cream, she doesn't like the texture but tolerates lotions. We are a family that loves Avene Trixera nutri-fluid lotion for face and body. We also like their sunscreen, i never use the spray sunscreen as i usually breakout with it 😮. So a cream SPF50 is what I always buy.
New sub. I like your style. It was informative and I like the save/splurge advice. I’m not a professional and do not know the specifics of how skincare works, so having a professional tell me I don’t need to spend $$$$ on all products is comforting. Ty🫶🏼
I do have a question what I try to find an answer for a while now and nobody can answer: what should I use first in the morning , the hialuronic acid or vitamin C , they both have the same consistency!! Please help and thank you !
I have used the Neogenesis Recovery which is an exosome product. I feel like it helps my skin heal faster from barrier issues and helps with minimizing pores. However is is over $300 for an oz and I am concerned about the potential skin cancer issue as my family has a history of skin cancer. So I likely will use it up and not repurchase.
I really appreciate how you mention other options for vit c even though your brand has your own version! I'm just curious, did you bench Prequel's vit c against Skinceuticals in any way? Either way, I love your brand (:
I just started using Murad dark spot treatment with really good results within a couple of weeks. A bit of a splurge but you only need a tiny bit , it really glides on easy. Will definitely keep it in my routine.
I've been using a lot of affordable drug store and k beauty, but I can't seem to be able to give up my Estee Lauder ANR. It's the only product I splurge on
Thanks Dr. Ellis! I'm interested in trying the Neocutis eye cream. Do you like both versions (firm and firm riche) or do you prefer one over the other? I've heard you mention both in past videos, so I'm curious if you've noticed a difference when using one over the other. Thanks! 😊
Do you have an opinion on the Lutronic Ultra laser? And a reminder for folks, a couple of channels have been focusing on reviewing different LED masks and they point out that the tech is constantly changing/evolving so if you already have a mask/panel you like and use regularly, don't feel pressured to go out and buy the next new thing.
I love your recommendations and advice. I got the lumire firm riche eye cream and wasn’t impressed. I personally didn’t see a difference when compared to other eye creams. Have you tried the riche formula? I’m wondering if the original one is better.
Waiting for Prequel’s launch on an affordable hyperpigmentation treatment soon! Counting on you, Dr. Ellis! ❤️

This was a really fantastic video. So important to know what’s worth spending on and what isn’t 😊
What is on our skin in this video?? Tinted moisturizer or a foundation?? Its amaze!
Dior forever skin glow foundation! Thank you!
I was wondering the same thing! Glowy & beautiful
I just did a PRF microneedling treatment, $600! Love it and my face and neck are happy❤️
where did you have it done?
@ I had it done in lancaster, PA. A nurse withdraws the blood and separates the plasma with a machine. The plasma is put in you skin by a aesthetician while microneedling with a pen. It is great but expensive and worth the money if you can afford it. Never look for deals to do this treatment.
thoughts about putting tretinoin around the orbital bone?
your hair looks beautiful!
Do you think the good ones, such as Neogenesis are worth the hefty price?
your content is great. Is Prequel available in the UK?
Still waiting for prequel to be available in the UK! 🤞🏽🤞🏽
I would like to see your overview and recommendations on common brands like Olay, L’Oréal, Mary Kay, Limelife, etc.
Many years ago, Orlane had a mist that I felt was worth every penny it cost. I was so glad that I followed the beauty consultant’s recommendation.
the word you were looking for was "unit price" - when trying to accurately compare product pricing...love your content btw! :)
Can you please explain growth factors
All her videos are so educational to me! I’ve learned so much about my skin (and others’ actually too) and how to navigate everything skincare 0ver the past year thanks to this lovely brilliant lady. I continue to learn everyday thanks to her educational derm content and I am all here for it. ❤
Dr Ellis, I just purchased the DR Dennis peel pads, extra strength. I am currently using a tretinoin prescription. How can I work these peel pads into my routine? Is it recommended not to use the peel pads the same night I’m using tretinoin?
Love these kinds of videos, they're so hopeful 🥰 Dr. Ellis would you do a video on what skin & hair products are worth diy-ing vs buying?
Very helpful. What a voice of sanity!
Dr Sam this is so informative. Thank you so much
New sub. I like your style. It was informative and I like the save/splurge advice. I’m not a professional and do not know the specifics of how skincare works, so having a professional tell me I don’t need to spend $$$$ on all products is comforting. Ty🫶🏼
Thank you! Welcome to the channel!
Have you ever demonstrated the Prequel vitamin C? I feel like too much product is being dispersed. Did I get a bag pump?
Great video, super helpful. I would like to know more about using sunscreen and recommendations for ones that suit under makeup
Dr Ellis I have 2 questions. First, can we use your serum with retina ? Second, do you plan to have a black Friday sale? Thank you
i love that you brought up cost per amount! i track my skincare in notion, and one of the columns is $/ml.
If I’m using Retin-A should I also be using something like the Peel Pads? Or is that too much? My skin is not sensitive. Great video. Thank you.
Are you guys doing a Black Friday sale? 😊 👀
Excellent info. Thank you. Love your honesty and ethics-despite creating your own line, you also recommend other products too. Classy!
Extremely valuable information. Greatly appreciated. Love your channel. You always do such a thorough job. Thank you!
Super useful video. Thank you!
Hi Dr Sam we live in Hawaii and have a 9yo son whom wears sunblock daily, can you recommend a type of facial wash for kids? Mahalo!
Please let me know what lipstick you are wearing? : )
Hi Dr Sam. Is your barrier therapy moisturizer coming back in stock soon? Thank u❤
I’m hoping prequel will be coming to Canada soon 😀🇨🇦
Yes I hope so too! I took a cross border day trip with my daughter especially to go to Target to pick up some Prequel products!
Please please please!!! I would buy it all
I just started a DNA enzyme repair Photozyme. Too soon to say I see results but I do like the formula consistency.
What LED face mask do you recommend?
Chemist confessions did a video on exosomes and yeah theres not much data surrounding exosomes, its crazy how expensive some exosome products are 😅
We need Prequel in Australia!!!
Your sweatshirt looks so nice, can you share where it’s from? Thanks for the video ❤
Love this video so much! Your hair looks amazing in this video!
I've been using a lot of affordable drug store and k beauty, but I can't seem to be able to give up my Estee Lauder ANR. It's the only product I splurge on
Always amazing content thank you
Thanks Dr. Ellis! I'm interested in trying the Neocutis eye cream. Do you like both versions (firm and firm riche) or do you prefer one over the other? I've heard you mention both in past videos, so I'm curious if you've noticed a difference when using one over the other. Thanks! 😊
I enjoy both! I’ve been more into the riche lately as my under eyes have gotten a bit drier.
The Dennis Gross Peel Pads confuse me. I thought we weren't supposed to use exfoliants and retinol on the same night?
@@lindsayoxby3377 unless formulated to be used together!
Thank you Dr. Sam for information we can use😊
Allies of Skin loved that brand
Hello, I love your videos. In your opinion would the Evertone Omniglow Face & Neck + Microcurrent Mask be a good one for red light therapy?
Would love a review of SkinCeuticals P-TIOX Peptide Serum if possible. Thank you!
I’ve enjoyed the prequel line I found on your link
