Razer Blade 16 Review - Worth it for 2024?

  • The 2023/2024 Razer Blade 16 gaming laptop is a step in the right direction for Razer. More wattage, slightly thicker, higher performance. Is it worth the tradeoffs though? Is it worth the price? Let's take a look!
    The Blade 16 features either a 4K, 120Hz mini-LED panel with dynamic resolution switch to 1200p/240Hz with 1,000+ nits of brightness OR a 1600p QHD 240Hz OLED panel with around 450 nits of brightness. The model shown here has the RTX 4090 but it is also available with an RTX 4080 or 4070. All have the same CPU which is an Intel i9-13950HX for 2023 or i9-14900HX for 2024. So great specs, but we're going to find out in this video how it handles all of that! And touch on any differences between the 2023 and 2024 models.
    We'll also compare it to other laptops like the Zephyrus G14, Lenovo Legion Pro 7i, Zephyrus M16, and ROG Flow X16.
    I hope you enjoyed the video! If you did, please like and subscribe to help the channel out, so I can continue making videos like these (and hopefully put them out quicker).
    Special thanks to Reddit user u/Devildog2407 for gathering tons of data on the 2024 model (between two different units!) to help me with comparisons.

    In Canada this thing costs $5,799.99 💀 My fav thing about Razer laptops is the aesthetics, the performance, and now the upgradeability. Everything else is subpar in my opinion. Speakers, keyboard, trackpad (I'm not a fan of huge ones), battery life, price, etc. My use case is, I need to bring this thing around to last a full day doing productivity without having to charge. Went with a Asus G14 because their AMD implementation some how nets me 10 hours battery, even though my laptop is 2 years old now. Anyways great in-depth review brother! What's next?

      What an insane price!! They are out of their minds. But yeah I’m the same way, I prefer my G14 all day. Just chilling and browsing on battery I can also hit 8-10 hours and it’s so nice to have that ability, plus the G14’s compact size is just too nice. But yeah next review… I never finished my Legion Pro 7i one because I got too busy but I might still do it. And then of course I’m definitely working on the 2024 G14 and G16 right now

    I bought the 2023 4090 open box from Best Buy for $3500, repasted with Liquid Metal and running it on max fans gaming. I put it on top of a baking rack and thermals are pretty good. One complaint I have is hot surface temperatures where my palm sits, but that's not too bad on max fan mode. I'd never use balanced or silent mode when playing demanding AAA or even esports titles. Surface temperature where your palm sits will be too hot, just run max fans. I can't imagine if this damages the battery long term, I sit at my desk anyway so I may remove the battery in the future just so it doesn't get damaged by hot temperatures.

    Nice, didn't know you had this laptop!
    I had the 2023 4080 version and a huge issue for me was a weird fan noise when the fans would ramp up or down when idle, a weird humming/whistling noise. A bit like the typical whistle you'd imagine of a bomb dropping from the sky lol, but not as high pitch.
    Did you get that noise on yours?

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Huh, that’s very interesting! Maybe some type of coil whine? My fans were pretty good. At idle they would always be going though, even on battery but at extremely low rpm’s and not ramping up or down.

    I have the 4090 2024oled model. I really like it but it does not run at 175w. It's more like 150 max. I've had a couple other laptops and out of all the 4090 units this one performs the worst out of all of them. I still like it the best though because of the screen and fan noise.

    Thank you for the review. I just bought the 2024 Mercury edition with a 4080. So far so good, it gets pretty dang warm on my wrist on turbo mode but other than that I haven’t had any complaints. Still debating if I want to keep it or return it though… it’s my first gaming laptop, I’m used to building PCs and having a desktop, but since I’m in the Air Force now at tech school I don’t want to have to travel with a PC, monitor, etc. Still trying to figure this whole color/brightness settings thing out to make it look crisp in the 1080p mode, it looks a little washed out so if you have any tips or guides let me know. I can also help you out if you need any info on the 2024 version 🤙🏼

    Josh, I want something like a Flow X16 but with the zephyrus 2024 package/weight. Does such a thing exist? 3060 or 3070 mobile performance would be good enough in terms of the gpu. I am waiting to see if the Flow X16 2024 is lighter and hopefully fits the bill. Idk if I'm missing anything but the zephyrus g14 seems perfect to me except no touchscreen. Right now using a flowx16 2022 with a 3060 in it.

I might just go with the 2024 zephyrus g14 because I don't see myself needing touchscreen after I finish college, and if so, I would definetly make the switch if the keyboard feels similar. The no single-zone dimming option is a dealbreaker for me. I got a BoE panel when I ordered the laptop last year, and the mini-LED effects were extremely noticeable for me. I ended up returning it and getting an ASUS M16.

      I’ve heard rumors that the 2024 mini-LED models have a dimming zone switch but I have no idea how to confirm since I can’t find anyone who owns one 🤣 but regardless, if it’s a BOE panel then I might still have those issues you had

    How is the 2023 version with the IPS panel, I cant find any reviews of the version with the IPS display, only with the MiniLED or OLED. How would you compere the QHD OLED 240Hz to the IPS QHD 240Hz?

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The IPS panel is similar to that of other laptops, very standard. I think it’s the same panel as the 2023 IPS Zephyrus M16 and G16, and same as the 2024 Legion Pro 7i. Not super bright, like 400 nits. Good colors, 100% DCI-P3. But if you watch my video comparing the panel types you’ll see just how much more bright the mini-LED and OLED panels are with a ton more contrast in comparison to IPS. Personally if I were buying a new laptop this year and wanted one that I’d keep a while, I would not be looking at IPS.

      Yeah, ik looking at some laptops, I currently already own a razer blade 15 with a RTX2060 and a 144hz IPS display, I may be looking to upgrade. The 15 inch seems to be replaced by the newer 16 inch models. The prices have also gone up I noticed. I'm thinking the RTX4070 is the minimum since the 4060 seems to be the worst in performance per dollar. Now deciding between the IPS and the Oled on the 2024 version. The MiniLED is out of my price range. Seems like I may have to spend a little more on the display!

    I have this in Mercury, because it's actually cheaper to get the Mercury Mini LED one than the black Mini LED one and I don't understand why.
    Just checked the Razer site, it's actually 2200 USD LESS to get it in Mercury with Mini LED than Black with Mini LED. Mercury is 3300 USD and Black is 5500 USD, assuming you get the lowest RAM config which you definitely should because they overcharge to hell and back for the RAM and it'll be WAY cheaper for you to upgrade the RAM yourself.

    I have been deciding between the asus m16 23 and the flow x16, and this year the g16 dropped and i thought i might finally pull the trigger on that but alter found out that the g16 lineup uses an oled panel, which im very hesitant about. My work flow is in between 3-4 hour or some days 7- 9 hours at 60-70% brightness in between, sometimes dialing it down to 20-30% if i work in the dark. My previous laptop (before it was stolen) lasted me 3.4 years, and it had a quite shitty ips display but nevertheless even that had ghosting (after a 3-4 hour session in ableton live, which has a bright gui) that lasted minutes after closing the program.
    So even after 5 months of research and reviews im still very much undecided on what to pick, any suggestions?

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, so multiple hours at high brightness with lots of static elements on the screen will accelerate the risk of burn-in. However, it does seem that the risk of burn-in has gotten lower with newer panels and newer technology. I think the M16 or X16 would still be an excellent choice if you want super bright panels with great contrast. The M16 would give more GPU power (granted you go for the 4080/4090 model), and the X16 would give you a nice glossy touchscreen and quieter fans. All of them will handle Ableton smooth as butter.

    Pick up a renewed Blade from Amazon which has a 3 month warranty. It's practically new and comes with the original packaging, there's enough time to get a return/refund if there are immediate issues propping up, and the savings are pretty great (~30%). The sticker price is far too exorbitant for me to buy it brand new, unless there's a rare discount going on.
    I got a early 2019 2070MQ/8750H Blade 15 Advanced in mid-2019 for $1800 when the 9750H model just replaced it for $2600. It's still with me 5 years later (with no major issues and no swollen batteries), and I can still play games on it (I keep my GPU a little overclocked during gaming, for a ~7400 Time Spy Graphics score). Bear in mind I can clean my laptop fans, repaste and replace my battery, reinstall windows etc. so I'm more than down to fix any issues due to which someone may have returned a laptop or something, and service the laptop myself if need be.

    Hi, back again watching this video! Thinking of going with the blade 16 with the Rtx2070.
    I'm really unsure if I should go with the MiniLED 2023 model, or the Oled 2024 model. I think the Oled will be easier to run on the Rtx4070. I also fear switching resolution is going to become a gimmick as time passes.
    On the other side, MiniLED doesn't suffer from burn-in, where's the OLED could suffer from it when being used for a few years. The Oled is also not as bright.
    What do you think?
    - Going for the 2023 model:
    Rtx4070, 32gb ram, MiniLED 4k 120hz/FHD 240 Hz.

      For the 4070 I would get the OLED just because it’s QHD. A 4070 is nowhere near enough to push a 4K display. You’d have to have it in like 1200p/1440p all the time to run games smoothly anyway. I think the OLED should be fine as long as you take some basic precautions like auto-hide taskbar, use dark backgrounds on shuffle, turn screensaver on, etc.

    For 39/34.6, respectively, the Legion Pro 7i with the 4090 seems like a strong contender for silent/balanced mode performance unless the CPU is super gimped or something. I always wonder if 4090 laptops have a better noise-to-performance ratio than the same laptop with a 4080. I've always only owned 4080 machines since I game exclusively on quiet or balanced. I always thought a laptop with a 4090 would be lost on me since I game exclusively in quiet or balanced mode, but maybe that's not always the case.

    I'm buying this evening or tomorrow one gaming laptop between the HP Omen 16 (2021) and the Acer Predator Helios Neo 16:
    .Hp Omen 16 2021:
    i7 11800h, 3070 maxq, 16gb ddr4, 1Tb, fhd 16:9 1080p
    price: 1000€
    .Acer Predator Helios Neo 16:
    i9 13900hx, 4060, 16gb ddr5, 1Tb, qhd 16:10 1600p
    price: 1600€
    .Is Neo16 far better for gaming?
    .Is Neo16 more powerful cpu really useful for gaming?
    .Are 500 vs 300 nits important for a good visual experience?
    .Does the Neo 16 worth spending 600€/$ more?
    Please and thanks

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That’s a tough one. $600 is a lot more money and the performance will be about the same on the GPU. The CPU is much better on the Helios, but that doesn’t matter too much in games. The display is much better on the Helios too, but FHD isn’t necessarily bad. Your games will run at much higher frame rates at FHD than they would at QHD at least. Are those your only options in that price range?

      @@JoshCravesTech Thank you for the answer.
      Don't want to bother.. I'm just so confused and I don't want to throw away my money.
      They are my options because I strongly want an internal sd card reader because of my previous organization and habit with memory. New gaming pc doesn't tend to have one.
      Thing is.. I read the tgp of the hp is bad.. someone wrote hp does have heat problems.. someone wrote the Acer got stutters problems..
      I don't want to make the wrong choice but I don't have the experience to make a good one.
      Reading things is one thing, experiencing things is all another, because you don't have the measures.
      I want a bright display and the Acer is brighter.. but I really don't know if 300 nits as the hp is low or not because my old pc doesn't have nits in specs.

      Not even close in speaker quality. The G16 2024 and G14 2024 are the best speakers I’ve ever heard on any laptop. They sound like a good Bluetooth speaker, while the Flow X16 would be more like just a good phone speaker in comparison. The Flow’s mini-LED gets MUCH brighter though, and it’s a 2-in-1 touchscreen laptop with much quieter fans. But the performance will be a bit behind compared to the 4080/4080 G16. The G16 is certainly more premium but I’ll always love the Flow. Just depends a bit on your use case and what you prefer.

    Other HUGE negative - after 400 days it started shutting down due to heat. As its just out of warrantee, Razor wants $99 to ship for estimate, $120 to quate the repair.
    Estimate came back as bad MoBo and bad SSD - so they want $3000 to do the repair!! SSD has neve been and issue, so no idea why they say its bad. Going to attempt a repaste myself as I have little to lose at this point.

    Thank you for the comparison. Having tried several flagships including the 2024 Razer Blade 16 OLED, I have mixed feelings about it. The OLED screen is great, except for the grainy effect on dark gray backgrounds, though it did get better with use. The improved thermal system in the 2024 model keeps it quieter and cooler to the touch. That said, the quality control is problematic as ever. I've tried two of them and both have stuttering issues on Advanced Optimus, trackpad randomly stops responding, and even the keyboard and trackpad are slightly misaligned. The average consumer would probably never notice, but for a $4,000 laptop, these are unacceptable issues.
    The best laptop I've ever used is the Asus Zenbook Pro 16X. While the touchscreen matrix has a slight screen door effect on white backgrounds. everything else about that laptop is perfect. The haptic touchpad is awesome, the gorilla glass screen assembly looks and feels premium, battery life is better than any gaming laptop I've tested, and the advanced cooling system is unmatched. Asus has been very innovative with their use of OLED, MiniLED, and CNC aluminum chassis. Once Intel switches to 2nm chips, cooling and battery life hopefully will greatly improve. Razer needs to step up their quality control to compete with Asus.

      Yeah I've heard some horror stories. I had a 2020 Blade 15 with some qc issues, but all the ones I've bought since I've been lucky have been great. I agree with you on the Zenbook. I kinda regret selling it, because it really was the best 16" laptop I think I've ever used. The Zephyrus G16 is also incredible too. To me, Razer is falling behind laptops like these. Asus is innovating faster than Razer can keep up with. But you'd think with the arm and leg that Razer is charging, that they could probably afford a nice little design change every year, lol.

      @@cutthat4643 I’d say the palm rest is a bit cooler on the G16. Both have similar fan noise on their Balanced modes. The Blade 16 is just a tiny bit quieter and both can achieve nearly the same performance in this mode plus you have more control over the G16 using g-helper. So you can let it run a little warmer if you want for more performance. Or raise the fans a bit more. The Blade just really surpasses it in Turbo. Outside of that they’re pretty close

    It is very expensive (4900EUR in Spain for the 4090, 2.5K OLED, 32GB RAM and 2TB SSD version), even more than the MSI Titan 18hx which is considered the most powerful gaming laptop right now and has better specs on paper (4K 120hz display, 64GB RAM, Gen 5 SSD compatibility, mechanical keyboard, better performance etc). However, the aesthetics of the Razer are by far the best of any Windows laptop out there, I actually like it even more than MacBook. I don't like overwhelming gamer aesthetics on laptops. The only gaming laptop with similar specs that competes with it in terms of screen and portability is the Asus G16 that has soldered RAM and inferior performance.

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, the price is absolutely insane. But it is beautiful! I think the G16 is a good contender if you want much better portability and battery life. The G16 closed is thinner than just the body of the Blade without the lid. The bezels, speakers, and webcam/mic are all better on the G16 as well. But the Blade’s performance is definitely a good bit higher so that’s the tradeoff for sure.

    • @barcafan94
      @barcafan94 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@JoshCravesTech My main problem with the G16 is soldered RAM. If the RAM fails you have to throw away the entire laptop, and you have to settle for a certain capacity without being able to upgrade if you need more. Sadly the smaller footprint comes at the expense of a lower powered CPU (Core Ultra 9 vs full powered 14900HX), lower powered GPU (175W vs 115W) and the soldered RAM. The R23 multi core score of the Blade is 90% higher than that of the G16 with the same specs.
      Sadly that's how it is with gaming laptops, you always have to make a compromise. It's either size/battery life or performance. You can't have both
