How on earth are they gunna shuv an out of scaled 1440p resolution screen in a 14 in laptop you would think if you wanted power for the buck youd get the 14 for 1080 without having to scale it up all awkwardly.
Good thing about the sponsor: It's exactly what I wanted, because another company selling snacks from Japan stopped stocking my favorites. Bad thing about the sponsor: I used the code, copied from here, and didn't get the 1000 points. Boo.
@@typerightseesight laptop manufacturers these days love to shove in 1440p or 4K on these tiny screens, so they can charge more $$$ from consumers who only need 1080p.
A lot of people don't understand that the thin-and-light gaming laptop segment of audience are different than those who are seeking for pure performance. They're well aware that there can only be so much wattage for the GPU in that chassis, and they're well aware that the biggest chunk of what they paid here are portability while still being so capable. Comparing thin and light gaming laptops with pure performance gaming laptop will never be fair & can never be called a scam.
Thanks, yes!! The only thing where I get the remarks for, is that the g14 was always a pure gaming machine, but pretty light for its class . They had the flow x13 for the thinner / lighter class. So this 2024 version makes the g14 a more expensive thin and light (but an awesome one!). For everyone waiting for a refresh of their beloved gaming series, it's a negative. I couldn't be happier with this design though.
Yeah, I have my 7800x3D + 3080ti 64 GB RAM rig at home. This is so when I travel, I can game, but I can also go into the coffee shop to get some writing done without looking like one of those cliched neohackers lugging around a commodore64
Seriously the whole reason I even like the G14 is that it’s a true all rounder I don’t need the most performance, if I want it I’m not going to waste time with a laptop at all. A good mix of speed battery display and size is what matters
4:02 so according to someone with close contacts with the industry, Intel banned OEMs shipping AMD laptops from using Intel WiFi chipsets, so you’re either getting Mediatek or Qualcomm (which is even worse than Mediatek, from personal experience), this having upgradable WiFi is pretty important
This laptop should be compared with Lenovo Legion Slim 5 14" or Razer Blade 14", which are in the same category. Comparing it with an 16" laptop in terms of performance is not fair. Comparing it with a laptop with an old inefficient Intel processor in terms of battery life is also not fair.
@@eladbari In Belgium (I don't know for other countries), you can get the Lenovo Slim 5 with rtx 4070, 230W for 1200-1400 euros (Tax included), This only gives you 16GB RAM and 512GB of SSD, but considering the low prices of storage, you can easily upgrade to a 2TB for like 100 euros, same goes for RAM. Which makes it by far the most affordable laptop with a good GPU. On the downside, it is a heavy beast and the battery-efficiency is nothing compared to a Macbook (4 hours of max usage). But considering the price/performance it stands way above the competition... You also have a free SSD slot so you can keep the original 512GB and just drop in a 2TB without having to think about it; which makes it so nice
@@eladbari pros: screen, thermals, performance, build quality, keyboard, full size SD card, full sized HDMI port. Cons: some plastics, a little chunky, loud fans unless you use quiet profile.
@@jasperdv3270 Lenovo Slim 5 with an rtx 4070? You're probably talking about a 16" model, and not 14". Lenovo didn't make 14" options in 2024. So weird! I don't wanna carry around a 16" laptop with a heavy charger
Laptop + Desktop is pretty popular, also, some have dedicated gaming laptops, as they are usually bigger and heavier. Really depends on your specific needs and wants (and budget ofc).
1 older running as media center 1 spare laptop 1 regular laptop 1 business laptop for self-employed 1 business laptop for regular work 1 business laptop for client A 1 business laptop for client B .... what..? Okay, for real, I only have one old one as a media center, and one beefy as work laptop. 😛
Because of current limitations on USB-C it is very inefficient to run it at 240W. A ton of that power is just wasted as the laptop has to down step the high voltage required to deliver that much power over a limited amount of current.
I believe you guys mentioned in the video that the screen is updating 960 times every second, when it's actually 480, since the refresh rate is 120Hz. It's the Asus Rog Zephyrus G16 with its 240Hz display that technically updates 960 times every second.
Asus' documentation, stream, and Notebookcheck's measurements say 960hz. It was only the one dude in the LTT video that said 480hz. That said, I can't say which is right.
The brightness calibration is 960hz. That's the PWM that's detected by notebookcheck and others. It basically means every oled pixel is 're-pulsing' at 960hz. Note that this is completely unrelated to 'screen refresh '. Dropping brightness also drops the PWM by the way, so this 960hz is only true at 60% brightness or more. You get a popup when lowering it below that. Armoury Crate also has a 'software brightness ' slider, when you can limit the brightness while keeping the panel at full brightness / refresh.
@Exotic-9780 yeah, I think support reputation should definately be a part of reviews. The bestbuy angle is a good idea but honestly I'd hate to reward a company with poor support, even via a 3rd party. There's no shortage of decent laptops out there. Asus needs to see massively reduced sales until they learn their lesson.
I bought through a reputable boutique in the US and I had them repaste it. That way my laptop and screen has been tested for function. I've had zero issues with it (well the Asus keycaps are absolute instant scratch off shit. I took too long calling Asus to get a replacement keyboard.) Considering when I did this it was really impressive that I basically got normal price and service from a small operation, during pandemic pandemonium. Although to my way of thinking, the 1660 Ti probably counted as $300 of the price, but that was still up to $100 less than others were paying for that level of performance whether in or out of a laptop. Are there even 3-5 year warranty laptops instead of 1 year ****?
@@jonc-1989That's putting it mildly. I sent my Zephyrus S17 back for repair in 2022 and it took 5 weeks with four distinct "We've fixed it; oh dear there's another problem" cycles to get it working again and shipped back to me. I totally expect it to go up in flames as soon as the warranty expires :(
Almost 2 months ago, I got a Zephyrus G14 (2023) from Best Buy, when it was on sale for $999.99, and it was definitely worth that price. It's very nice. I got the Ryzen 9 7940HS/RTX 4060/16GB DDR5 4800MHZ RAM/512GB SSD. I upgraded the SSD by putting in a 1TB Samsung 990 Pro that I got from NewEgg sometime on a sale last year for about $65. It is usually worth it to wait until big sales go up to buy electronics.
I work for a tech store here in the UK, asus are good laptops but they do the repairs in Czechia so they take 6 weeks usually which is unreal we end up writing so many off due to terrible warranty management. Be wary when buying in the UK in particular, amazing until they need work
They are out of the box the most prone to failure laptop manufacturer too. Terrible customer service, faulty hardware, ridiculous asking prices. Google search analytics also reveal a big new issue with their screens flickering black, you can search "asus screen" and google will autofill flickering lol
Any that have 3rd party authorized repairers that can fix warranty claims so you don't have to rely on the manufacturer, the store I work for is currys, we repair all laptops in 7 days usually except Asus as they refused to train our engineers
I would sell dell or Lenovo have the least issues overall from my experience and usually have the tools onboard (decent recovery options) and tools to fix it yourself
Have you tried partnering with another repair place who can service them faster or may be able to ship or turn them over better, even if it's paid ala carte? There was a time I was one of two Apple repair people in the whole state I live in (in the 2010s) which is as large as Germany and I used to be expected to beat the genius bar or any shop that mailed stuff to a central hub because a lot of Apple branded repair places would just drive them over to us. We did PCs too obviously. We'd repair them quickly enough and had an official parts supply chain that the other shop could get them back and circumvent their own hubs/mail outs. I used to know so many model specific fixes for Toshibas, Asus and HP because they let us at least try to escalate which led to us being able to always escalate. It might never actually be cheaper than just writing them off honestly cause you'd either being paying out of pocket for this or passing that expense on to the client, but it can be done, it is done every day all over the world even internationally. and it just makes you look really competent and tuned into the consumer electronics beat.
I must be weird in that in a *laptop* the lack of a touchscreen is a *feature* for me rather than a deficiency. If I wanted a touchscreen, I'd use a tablet.
Completely agree. What if the touchscreen slightly cracks? Whoops, can't use the computer at all anymore without the screen pressing itself half the time. Happened to me with another touchscreen laptop, completely unusable now.
I am not sure about the comment on 7:50 about trackpads on previous G14's. Pretty sure since 2022 model G14's had an absolutely gorgeous (also glass-topped) trackpads, only a couple millimiters shorter than the one shown here. I'm pretty sure Alex even complimented it in the review of 2022 model :)
@@Omchiwich Honestly seeing the new models I'm really not sure why anyone would get them. The 2023 model seems to be a better buy overall. Upgradeable RAM is huge, and the price increase for build quality and a slightly faster CPU doesn't make sense to me. Maybe I'm missing something.
3 months later, I just bought it for 1900€ which is around 2000 USD. Ryzen 9, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, 4060, RGB. Prices have surely come down a lot, very fast. It's now actually worth it. And it was not on discount, just casual normal price.
@MojeidaNeMoje421 its a high performance laptop. If you want good temperatures buy a desktop. Mine has the Ryzen 9 and when pushing it the temps go to 90-92 but never above it. Thats the max. While heavy gaming it stays at around 85 at the cpu, 80 at the gpu. I have custom fan curves and changed them to have less noise. I can push the fans more and have better temps. However, 80-90C on a powerful gaming laptop this thin is actually amazing. It never overheats, never thermal throttles. While doing light office tasks in balanced mode the cpu hovers around 50C and its very quiet. On battery the fans almost never turn on.
@@azenyr thanks a lot. I have both desktop and g14 2024 but I was not sure if my g14 is working properly because it is very hot. Especially when I’m working or gaming. But reading your comment I understand these temperatures are normal. Thank you again.
@MojeidaNeMoje421 use windows balanced energy mode, uninstall armoury crate and intall g-helper. In g-helper, go to advanced and click to stop all asus services. Make g-helper start with the pc. It replaces armoury crate perfectly and its extremely better at controlling heat and fans, and much lighter
I wish these laptop manufacturers would stop with the "gamer" typeface on the keys. If you wanted to go stealth, you can always skin the topside of the laptop, but the keyboard font still screams "wHoa i'M a GaMEr" too loudly.
@@unkown34x33 That's fine, but I'm a 34 year old dude. I shouldn't have to make the choice between a laptop that looks nice but is underpowered, and a laptop that's powerful but looks like it was designed by a cyberpunk version of Fischer Price. This ROG design language appeals to 9 year olds who boast how many pixie sticks they can snort every time Optimus Prime says "Autobots, roll out!" Just incredibly tacky and tasteless.
I bought my 2021 model around 800 usd 2 years ago. Paint is chipping, but still a great laptop. 32gb of ram, Ryzen7 5800hs, rtx3060. Still 11 hours battery life. Only dowside is I need to reapply liquid metal every 6 months, it degrades quickly.
Dropping back in to this video that encouraged me to buy this computer before my 2nd year of college and it is great! Can do practically anything that you can throw at it however there are two issues that I have with it so far. First is the WIFI card, going between accesspoints REALLY SUCKS. Sometimes I have needed to reboot for it to connect to wifi around campus. Second is the battery life, It is great and will get you through a days worth of note taking and normal web browsing but if you want to do anything more demanding then that, dont expect it to last a little bit further than a hour. Hope this helps anyone that wants to purchase this laptop in the future!
Get G14 or any oled ONLY if you know you can tolerate glossy screens. Realize that the only condition you can actually see any black on glossy screen is sitting in totally dark room. And even then you will see reflections from the screen itself. For me, glossy screen is a big NO
I'm still using (and absolutely loving) my G15 from 2021. I don't expect to upgrade for at least another 3 years, but hopefully the Zephyrus line continues to improve by then.
I have an older one of these. I really like it, but in extended use sessions, it gets INCREDIBLY hot under the WASD keys. To the extent that my fingers get sore from the heat.
What were you doing to get that hot? My 2022 g14 never get that hot even when I game (Planetside 2, War thunder, World of warship, Starcraft II, etc.).
That model shouldn't get that hot on the keyboard. This newer 2024 model is quite a complete redesign. The aluminium body can heat up, but they kept it away from most keys, specially around wasd. It gets really hot just above the keyboard in the center.
Might want to check your humidity/air circulation in general. I have a newer laptop that has palm warping from overheating the chassis sitting on a wooden desk with no obstruction. Same laptop months later rarely reheats sitting on the cloth sleeve I keep it in. The gains are logarithmic. If your air is mostly fine then improving it is mostly pointless, but 2.5-7.5 degree swings just because of humidifier/dehumidifier is common. Especially to human touch
Do some digging online. I found a youtuber talk about how the AMD chip was designed to ALWAYS run at full speed. There is a trick to prevent it from doing this. I followed his advice and made a few (easy) changes within the software. It instantly dropped my temperatures about 10 to 15 degrees. When I first used my 2023 model - it also ran extremely hot. The other thing to consider - ditch armory crate and use G-Helper.
@@TheOnlyNameThe last mediatek wifi card I had managed to corrupt both Windows and Linux partitions in my dual boot. I did the digging, I found the log files. Replaced with a $20 Intel card and It Just Works
My wife has a lot of problems with her 2022 zephyrus g14. Basically, it comes down to Armory Crate forcing updates and breaking itself. Requires uninstalling and reinstalling it every few weeks to get basic features working again (like power plans). We had a nearly 8 month period where she was stuck in high performance with the fans going full tilt all the time. We've also had issues with certain games straight up refusing to launch.
I had non stop issues with my g15 and hate it despite trying to drink the koolaid. I have constant heat issues, issues with power mgmt, crashing, display issues and the keys are already faded to plastic after 8 months of moderate use at best. Should have got a dell xps 15
Honestly id love for them to omit the GPU entirely and let use the stock 780m on integrated ryzen cpus its plenty powerful for 1080 gaming, and we'd get even more battery optimization and also just give us 64gb options to make it more workstation friendly
I have 2023 model, and liquid metal in it is ... not that good. It degraded after 4 months of usage. I also wish this year model had non-oled display option because of burn-in: changing it 3-4 years later can be a pain.
have the 2021 model, cleaned that shit up and put regular paste on and saw the temps drop by 10 degrees. The liquid metal also has a tendency to slide off of the die.
nice! the Webcam was the only thing stopping me from buying the previous generation. I'm glad they decided on putting one in this one. now students will actually look into buying this too.
Unless they have fixed modern standby I could never use it as a daily driver. I refuse to be awakened in the middle of the night by my computer randomly deciding to turn on
Hmm I've just had that happen on my desktop, but used a tool to identify that it was my ethernet doing it and there was a setting I needed to turn off.
@@TheOnlyName Well I hope that fixes it. As of a couple of years ago most computers no longer allow you to choose the previous version of sleep which actually makes the computer stay asleep. Modern standby basically let's the computer turn on whenever it wants to and whereas you can prevent certain things from turning it on you can't stop it completely.
Asus has a feature in Armory Crate called “Modern Standby Assist” that you can enable that will force sleep mode when closed. Nice to see Asus taking a proactive approach on this issue!
I'll stick with my framework as the replacement for my 3060 powered ROG G15. I'm pretty done with barrel jack chargers and proprietary charge ports, tired of having to replace an entire power brick because the strain relief doesn't protect the wire well at the jack.
I bought this laptop a few weeks ago (it's so much more expensive here in the UK), thanks for vindicating my decision and basically pretty much my whole existence ;-)
Asus doesn't want to step down 48V to 20V because of efficiency concerns. All the lost efficiency returns as heat to you and step down hardware also takes up space
@@Hathos9 Where are you getting the battery life claims. I've gotten good battery life as has Jarrod's Tech. Granted, I set mine to ≈ 200 nits of brightness and set the screen to 60 hz. And I was running Arch.
I got a 2022 G15 for $1000 smechkles. RTX 3060 140W, 16GB GDDR5, 1TBSSD, Ryzen R7 6800H, all wrapped up in a sleek design sporting a 1440p 165Hz display. I do game concept art on it in photoshop like a breeze and I've been able to play just about every game from 2015 and onward at 60+fps, maxed out at 1440p. I got one of those IETS GT500 Cooling pads and my temps never go above 70C on both the CPU and GPU even when gaming for hours. ASUS makes some damn good laptops for the price and they have just enough touches of gamer-ness without being an eyesore to take out in public.
I bought the 2022 6800HS/6700S model around 14 month ago and I still love it. It's not as slim but has the Animatrix and more beautiful insides. But the pretty big trackpad already felt awesome, (7:50) I don't agree with Alex point there... But finally a 1080p webcam...
I've got that one too with 40gb of ram and a 2tb ssd. Literally the perfect laptop for traveling. Crazy good battery life and enough power to game really well plus a beautiful display and slim form factor. I'm keeping it for at least 2 more years lol
they cheap out on the packaging design. I had the 2022 version and that package and unboxing experience was simply amazing. Its on the level of opening a Founder Edition card
As a Asus g14 2022 user.... one of the worst part with asus g14 series is LM that will burn in 1~2 years of use.... mine got burned, I've just checked it last month when I repaste thermal putty and use ptm7950 on cpu and gpu. I hope asus just use ptm7959 like lenovo... because it will give stable temperature on long use(like more than 12hours), and has longer life span. but I agree g14 series are just great~! I might change my system on 2025 version.
Only half way through, but did they notice the light on the back of the screen/lid of the laptop seemingly responds to the sounds of Alex's voice at one point. 7:25 Edit: also when it plays crab rave
That's the replacement of the older matrix led display. It's just some sort of light bar. Most patterns look like crap so I left it off. Yes, there is a mode to respond to sound but I imagine it takes a bit of battery / resources.
That has two SSD slots, but you can only get 32 GB of RAM with the Ryzen 7 model; for reasons beyond my understanding and all logic, the Ryzen 9 model is limited to 16 GB. 🤦♂️
For gaming it's for sure a good competitor. Comparable specs for less. The oled misses gsync but that's about it. I didn't go for one because the size/speakers/weight. I was looking for an Ultrabook which can occasionally game. If you are looking for gaming first , the legion is better. BUT... I'd also say if you are looking for just gaming , looking at 15/15 inch will get you more I guess.
@@jorismak I mean, it's portable enough (1.7kgs isn't that much more weight, vs the g14). As for the speakers, I hear they're average but I'll mostly be using headphones anyway. The 14.5" OLED though seems like a good sweetspot for size, and every reviewer I've seen is singing praises about it
@@HelloBrother22 It's a very good machine, for sure. But the 1.5kg on this g14 was already on the upper limit for weight for me. It depends where you come from. Having used this laptop for a month, i've had zero issues with the Mediatek chip in this unit... so happy with it, it feels, sounds and looks very nice. Perfomance with the RTX 4070 is great. I mainly use it while I'm travelling since it's super portable and compact given the specs in this little thing. Battery life is about the same i've managed to get as well with silent mode and battery saver.
@@drgrube Great! Obviously when doing intensive tasks it gets pretty loud. I don’t consider it much of an issue given i use wireless headphones. But it’s loud. However, i also use it for school. just bought this laptop because of this video. thanks! I almost went with a Zenbook but wanted to game with my kid. other than the fact I wish it came with a 2TB drive I love it so far!
Ill keep my macbook pro but if I was gonna go windows, this one might be tempting. The only downside of the mac is lack of support for a lot of games.. Not even much of a gamer but sometimes something interests me. Oh well.. that's what I have a switch for I guees..
I still use my 2021 G14. I'm happy with the battery life and the performance of it still now. Although i think its time for me to change the liquid metal since it has some heating issues even after cleaning the fans. Other thing I'm facing is the paint peeling issue on the metal panel.
I am glad to see more of Alex’s laptop reviews and I am happy that he reviewed the latest ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 laptop! I owned the 2023 version of this laptop for six months and I barely had any problems with using it daily for university and gaming. I was able to upgrade the 16 GB RAM to 32 GB and 512 GB SSD to 1 TB in Best Buy.
Noise reduction sounds a bit odd, because it's made for podcasts so the bass is a bit boosted. A little EQ to cut some of the mud from the low end would make it much better
I absolutely love my 2022 G14. The size to performance is unlike anything I've found from other brands. Will definitely buy another one when I need to upgrade.
Had the 4060 + Core Ultra 9 G16. I don't know about the G14, but if it has the same tri-fan cooling solution, try to avoid it, or make sure you can return the laptop after testing for yourself. That third fan is loud and high-pitched, and the laptop never stays silent or cool. Perfromance is good, screen and speakers are awesome but as a daily machine, it just didn't do it for me and most likely won't do it for many people. Never forget the price of that laptop - you can get a slightly thicker machine with much better cooling and more power for 3/4 or even 1/2 of the G14.
I'm not getting another laptop until the graphics cards start coming with more RAM. I don't care how compelling they are otherwise. The only thing that would make me change my mind on that is if DDR6 suddenly became available and cheaply. AI is the future, and that means that massive amounts of high-bandwidth memory is also the future. Anything else is a paperweight to the past.
I have a Zephyrus G15 (2022) and had to swap out the Mediatek NIC. Garbage chip but a fresh AX210 chip got it back in shape. I didn't mind no webcam but I'm glad they moved away from that.
The funny thing is, I had a Framework Laptop 16 with the MediaTek 7922, and it was fine. I had a Legion with the 7921, and it was horrible. It seems the Wi-Fi 6E and later cards are much better in that regard. If my Framework had any trouble, that Wi-Fi card would absolutely have been replaced.
i just changed out my Mediatek card in my 2023 model (I also upgraded the ssd and the ram) - and all I can say is: "Who the hell tightened that screw holding the Wifi card in place?" Holy Hell that thing was almost permanent.
I just picked up one as a school laptop that will be used for a side of gaming. For me, it’s perfect! Powerful enough to have some fun and has the specs to get me through my degree.
Yup. I'm a Razer laptop user and their stuff is already high-priced but they went the same route. Huge increases for 2023 and still high for 2024. Insane how even if I buy one used it will still be like $2,600 bc MSRP was $3800 😬
Soldered Ram is kind of a dealbreaker for the lower end moddel.I bough a 3060 g14 for 700.- second hand and upgraded the ram to 24Gb for like 20.-, thats good value!
@@kkon5tiYou can buy the 2022 with the ryzen 9/6800s/16GB and anime matrix for 800 at asus store, and probably you can find it second hand for 700 or even lower. I like the new model but 2022/2023 models are insanely good value nowadays
Since you probably don't have 12gb on board , you are now not running dual channel anymore , are you? You sure performance didn't tank? Of you come from 8gb I might get it, although putting in 8gb of a good match will probably give you more than putting in 16gb. 16gb of ram still (more than) enough these days.
Look, we finally got the gaming laptop that look like an actual laptop and a great sound system, I even can say that the bass on g14 is slightly better than the pro 14
Haven't watched the video yet, used to dream of getting a G14, but have a hard time considering Asus laptops now. Bought a X13 two years ago and problems were non stop - rubber feet started falling off in one week and were all gone within three months, 2 key caps fell off within 6mo, BOSD powerloss & random long posting times, wireless card intermittently stopped working, the screen even started peeling off just after a year. Holy crap I felt like was scrambling to fix that thing every two months
My wife has issues with her 2022 G14. Armory Crate forces updates and breaks features every single time. We were stuck in high performance with fans at 100% for almost 8 months, which was unacceptable for a laptop she uses for school, therapy work meeting clients, and gaming.
6 mos is within the shitty 1 year warranty, did you use it? Asus key caps print is rub off **** these days, but popped off. I wanted the small of the flow, but you're making me glad I got a TUF. You really paid a premium for a bad experience.
@@ThroughFallenEyesthe forced updates, including bios updates without warning that's what happening make me so nervous on Asus TUF, but they've shockingly been without issue :knock on wood:
Thin and light? Sure, nice to have. But not at the expense of soldered RAM (or soldered storage for that matter, as in some Macs for example). Besides, it's not actually true. The room is there for a sodimm slot. It's marketing, getting you to spend more now than you really want, because you can't upgrade later.
Currently the only way to get fast ram speeds though. If it's true that the precious model only had a single slot that doesn't really help much, because you need to match size and speed of the soldered ram to have dual channel.
I really wish ShortCircuit would start giving companies ratings on their products long term. Asus is a shit QA company and I bought into the 2022 model g14 with so many issues, had to RMA it twice and even after all that it only lasted 13months. I don't care how good this looks, it wont last more then a year for a minority of users who purchase it.
most of us on the G14 subreddit have loved our machines, the biggest issue is the wifi card that’s commonly swapped out for intels. if there was ever a place to have a lot of failures, it’s that subreddit, and i just don’t see many bad machines there
Avoid ASUS no matter what right now. They've fallen SUPER hard in quality of components and QA testing process. Motherboards, GPUs, Monitors, all having HIGH rates of return and refunds the past year due to quality issues.
My AQMR seems fine, my g14 2024 is still fine (but quite new). My flow z13 is still going strong. Was sent a new keyboard cover though. My zenfone9 still going strong. I have nothing of Asus _in_ my desktop though. More by accident. EDIT: I do advise (for whatever manufacturer) to get the on site warranty for anything you can. Makes it much more pleasant when things break (and yes, eventually they will for all hardware 😉)
Yeah Asus is great on paper, until you listen to youtube reviewers who use the laptop for 1 week. Then you go buy one yourself and encounter either driver issues in the first months, or a shorted motherboard in the first year. Lets just hold them accountable for their shitty QC and cost cutting. I work in IT service, and the laptops with the most problems that come back, are always Asus and HP. Also the stupidest product from them is a laptop Zephyrus for creators that a client paid about 2.5k dollars and after reinstalling everything, drivers are still not working properly, ex: trackpad sometimes dosent work, other times it does, display issues and wifi issues, and its not a faulty board this time.
I hate it: They've turned it into a MAC, down to the upgradeablity. OLED means burn in, so you'll have to replace it sooner, ram slot is gone, so you'll have to upgrade sooner, and the screws are no longer normal, they don't want you to get inside. 2025 model is gonna be worse. I'm personally gonna be looking out for a 2023 model this summer, last year they had 2022 models for $800 sales, and like the video said, the cpu is the same besides the Ai.

My next laptop choices are the Framework, the new Zenbook Duo, and this, and I am now realizing that two out of the three options are Asus. They are killing it.
Floppy lids? If you meant to say the display wobble, this is true, but not even a problem on this model. Trackpad doesn’t rattle, light bleed is impossible since this is a OLED laptop. Nice try though lol…
I will mention this. I have an older G14 and it has keyboard chatter, where when typing, some of the keys will register two presses a few ms apart. This makes typing an awful experience, and I've heard of people having this issue on other Asus laptops as well, and it's possible they still haven't sorted this issue out. There's also no consistency to the issue. It happens to any key, and it only seems to happen when typing because I can't get it to happen by mashing a key with a key tester open. It almost seems like a bug in the firmware. External keyboards don't have any issues.
It's a completely new redesign , so all bets are off I guess. I've seen 3 flow x13sz my flow z13 (keyboard cover ) and my current quite new g14 2024, and they never had issues with the keyboard. Well , my flow z13 had an issue with the whole keyboard cover not working anymore (which happens A LOT) on those devices. But not with the keys themselves 😉

If the charger isn't USB-C, it's DOA for me. The days of special snowflake chargers is over.
USB-C CAN do 240W, but it is not EFFECTIVE beyond a certain wattage which is why no one uses it at those wattages.
Plus these machines support USB-C charging (or at least the old ones did), just not to power the machine under full load
@@cortesacrawford Why not both?

Can confirm. Asus here in the UK use a 3rd party company for warranty repairs and they're not great
In the US I recommend buying Asus products from Best Buy, Asus support in the US is a joke

They are out of the box the most prone to failure laptop manufacturer too. Terrible customer service, faulty hardware, ridiculous asking prices. Google search analytics also reveal a big new issue with their screens flickering black, you can search "asus screen" and google will autofill flickering lol
What brands would you recommend for good warranty in the UK?

I got an excellent condition open-box one this week for 1.3k, can't wait to unbox it!! It's super promising so far, the charger appears untouched.
Only half way through, but did they notice the light on the back of the screen/lid of the laptop seemingly responds to the sounds of Alex's voice at one point. 7:25
Edit: also when it plays crab rave
The high-end models of the G14 have a led pixelated display on the back of the cover
That's the replacement of the older matrix led display. It's just some sort of light bar. Most patterns look like crap so I left it off. Yes, there is a mode to respond to sound but I imagine it takes a bit of battery / resources.
Can we just admit touchscreens on a laptop are dumb? The last thing I want my laptop screen looking like is my phone’s screen.
The Lenovo Legion Slim 5 14" OLED is a much more compelling option tbh, particularly to those outside the US
That has two SSD slots, but you can only get 32 GB of RAM with the Ryzen 7 model; for reasons beyond my understanding and all logic, the Ryzen 9 model is limited to 16 GB.
The 14.5" OLED though seems like a good sweetspot for size, and every reviewer I've seen is singing praises about it
@@cameronbosch1213 yeah that is dumb. I wouldn't get anything less than 32 with this one. Though Ryzen 7 might be better for battery life
@@HelloBrother22 It's a very good machine, for sure. But the 1.5kg on this g14 was already on the upper limit for weight for me. It depends where you come from. Do you need a gaming machine that is portable, the Legion is very good. Do you want an ultrabook that has a bit of GPU power, this is the one.
I have the ROG Zephyrus G14 (2023) and I am confident to say that ASUS is the most reliable brand of them all.
This is a must!
Have you tried something like Photoshop on it yet? Just asking
@@iamtharunraj I personally haven’t tried it since it’s not a program i use atm :c I wouldn’t doubt this thing could handle it though
@@Cameroncito oh I see
How has fan noise been for you?
@@drgrube Great! Obviously when doing intensive tasks it gets pretty loud. I don’t consider it much of an issue given i use wireless headphones. But it’s loud.
However, i also use it for school. While at school i leave it in silent mode since i only use it for light tasks. While in silent mode it remains cool and quiet.
just bought this laptop because of this video. thanks! I almost went with a Zenbook but wanted to game with my kid. other than the fact I wish it came with a 2TB drive I love it so far!
an engineer reviewing products should be standard
Ill keep my macbook pro but if I was gonna go windows, this one might be tempting. The only downside of the mac is lack of support for a lot of games.. Not even much of a gamer but sometimes something interests me. Oh well.. that's what I have a switch for I guees..
I still use my 2021 G14. I'm happy with the battery life and the performance of it still now. Although i think its time for me to change the liquid metal since it has some heating issues even after cleaning the fans. Other thing I'm facing is the paint peeling issue on the metal panel.
Yeah the paint ;-;
I love the 2022 model; I still have it, and it runs great, but the new one makes me envious.😭
Noise reduction sounds a bit odd, because it's made for podcasts so the bass is a bit boosted. A little EQ to cut some of the mud from the low end would make it much better
The Zephyrus G14 2024 has had the most paid up influencer marketing ever. Presenting as a God when it's worse than last year.
How is it worse?
no asus arguably the biggest company in pc components
Yeah love the metric numbers that we can pound upon!!! Come on where is the consistency!!!??? LTT
Hmm.. nothing on the fan noise? Makes me think there is some influence on what is said from ASUS.
Do you really need to ask? The laws of physics still exists.
@krane15 True, but the fan noise on the models sound like old kettles whisteling from other sound samples.
QC of the Zephyrus line is bad. My 2021 G15 had plenty problems, my 2022 G15 is fine thus far
No one is going to buy a Windows laptop until the launch of Snapdragon X Elite.
I've been rocking the Z13 Flow tablet, with the 4050 in it, for like a year. Best travel computer i've ever owned.
whats up with the bad sound quality and echo in the last few videos?
I keep starting another video and thinking, yeah it's not my headphones, thank god.
same here, it's really weird@@minibeyse
Can confirm
I waited 2 months to see the speakers compared to the MacBook. I love Alex Laptop and Car Reviews
0:27 In what way does higher current mean higher efficiency?
Crab Champions for gaming performance, Crab Rave for audio and video performance? What's next? A crab plushy for camera performance?
That's nearly 50% more expensive than the 2022 version I have. F that.
Yup. I'm a Razer laptop user and their stuff is already high-priced but they went the same route. Huge increases for 2023 and still high for 2024. Insane how even if I buy one used it will still be like $2,600 bc MSRP was $3800 😬
there are no cheap machinned alluminum laptops
@@Kzninja2 it wasn’t cheap in the first place.
Laptop becoming mobile phone size & mobile phone becoming laptop size.
Soldered Ram is kind of a dealbreaker for the lower end moddel.I bough a 3060 g14 for 700.- second hand and upgraded the ram to 24Gb for like 20.-, thats good value!
700??? How even??
Holy crap I felt like was scrambling to fix that thing every two months
if two key caps are falling off in 6mos i would have to question wtf you're doing to your laptop.
My wife has issues with her 2022 G14. Armory Crate forces updates and breaks features every single time. We were stuck in high performance with fans at 100% for almost 8 months, which was unacceptable for a laptop she uses for school, therapy work meeting clients, and gaming.
@@ThroughFallenEyes id recommend ditching (uninstalling) armory crate and using g-helper, way easier to use and very useful features
I just bought this laptop last week! I hope to have it soon. The reviews have all been very positive, including user reviews.
Soldered RAM. That's an immediate no-no.
But everybody wants a thin and light laptop. That's the price you pay since you can't have it both ways.
@@krane15 Nonsense.
Currently the only way to get fast ram speeds though. If it's true that the precious model only had a single slot that doesn't really help much, because you need to match size and speed of the soldered ram to have dual channel.
And it's LPDDR5 6400 which is like bottom of the barrel shit. Probably on par with DDR5 4800
Me too, alao looking for 2023. but not for 800, here they still sell the 3080 version for 3000 😢
@@kkon5ti wait till summer I saw some that were up for $800 so maybe somewhere comparable to that. I hope the 4090 version is somewhere close to base price but I ain’t holding out for it. Would awesome to have the equivalent of a 4070 super in a 14in laptop
My next laptop choices are the Framework, the new Zenbook Duo, and this, and I am now realizing that two out of the three options are Asus. They are killing it.
asus suffers from floppy lids, rattling trackpads, terrible light bleed.
Don't have any of those issues on my og G14
What are you smoking mate 😂
Don't think the last can happen here given that it's an OLED haha.
Floppy lids? If you meant to say the display wobble, this is true, but not even a problem on this model. Trackpad doesn’t rattle, light bleed is impossible since this is a OLED laptop.
Nice try though lol…
Which part of the video did you not watch? Oh wait....all of it.
Would love to see a solid productivity laptop, one designed to work in an office for many years to come.
14 inches feels too small for gaming
I was already planning to get this for college, hopefully in the near future on sale!!
You don't need a 3000$ Laptop for college.
@@ilm91 First of all, I was planning to get it for about half the price. The two configurations here in the US are 1.5k and 2k. Also, perhaps I don't need it for college work, but this is definitely the laptop I want for personal use. It will be so nice finally being able to play the games in my library, many of which I have gotten for free, as this will be the first computer in my family with a discrete graphics card.
@@ilm91it's one of the little machines out there that is small and light and enough battery to get you through 6 hours of work easily, a very nice screen to watch media on, and can still pack a good punch playing games. As the title says, I'd you have one machine and you want it all, this does it all. It's master of none, though.
Great video! How is fan noise?
