  • It’s well established that children with histories of abuse demonstrate higher levels of depression, conduct disorder, PTSD, impaired social functioning and other problems. This is deeply entangled with how we discipline them. In this excerpt from Episode 114 of Into the Fold, Dr. Elizabeth Gershoff, professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences at UT Austin and the director of the Population Research Center, who has been studying the effects of physical discipline on children for two decades, makes the case for banning the practice.

Totally disagree with number 2. My parents didn't hit me because I was hitting someone else. They hit me because they were alcoholic and had anger management issues.

Hmmm.. I remember, when I was growing up, getting ready to do something stupid and then stopping because I knew I'd get my ass whooped if my mom or dad found out. I've never been in trouble with the law, I only get depressed around that time of the month , and I thank God that my parents "spanked" me every time I see kids acting a fool while their parents walk behind them asking them to stop- FOR THE 20TH TIME.

@@zach9676 A young human lacks communication skills. Physical discipline is important in that stage of development for that reason. It's also why other primates discipline their young by being physical with them. Your wife is a fully developed human being. Your comparison makes no sense.

I was spanked, it was always a last resort for my parents. They always made me understand why. At max, I got 1 to 3 depending on what I did. Like when I cheated on a test, or stole from my classmate. I deserved it, and I know that. It never harmed me, and I don't have any "mental illness".

I had to pull my pants down and lay over my couch. I was beat with a leather belt. If I flinched or began crying afterward, then the beating would continue until I stopped. I was absolutely terrified of my father. I lived in constant fear when he was around. Most beatings, I didn't even know what I had done wrong. This sort of thing has ever lasting effects on a child's brain development. Don't beat your children.

NOW everything is related to a mental illness, this is too many excuses and allow the bs to continue. life is not easy for anybody and this society is trying to make it so. thats not living. most of these experts, (NOT), dont have kids and dont know what anyone with one or more is going thru but you all allowing them to dictate to you what good? think nation for yourself. i'm not spearing any rodes over here and i'm only and auntie and godmother and they know but. i'm the funniest, and best aunt and yes they can tell me anything. so stop beating up on others in society due to race and raise the children and dont spear the rod..... I'm with you thats why there not mental health impact and bs on your theory of kids who get spanked hit orger because they know impact....,,
