People don't realize these diagnoses didn't exist in the 70s and 80s when we were kids. In the 90s there was research and new information about mental illness but we didn't have access to that information. We couldn't Google it. It was such hard work trying to find any information in the libraries with limited supplies of magazines and news articles. People today have no idea. I was in high school in 1990 when my depression kicked in at a level that I could recognize that I was depressed and didn't know why.

I am in the process of planning to tell my parents that I am diagnosed with bipolar. I have to plan this in a way that I also have to make them understand that it’s not their fault, that no one could haven planned this. But I also have to find time so that I can be there for them and show them I don’t even blame them and that nobody is at fault. Sometimes one of the hardest part is knowing that your parents blame themselves. Yes, maybe in the pst when I don’t even understand my symptoms, I would always find someone to blame for my depression and they are the nearest and most comfortable people to blame but now that I know why I am having this symptoms, oddly enough, I became worried that maybe my mother may have had these but because she was born in a different generation, she wasn’t aware. And my heart ache for her for behaving in the past. She may not be a perfect mother but she did her best too and I love her for that. Thanks for this.

I got diagnosed in my early 30s and was treated. I wasn't coping and got help from a social worker to get me back into work. I also got OCD from an early age due to being unfairly treated through out my entire life. It's still a work in process and I'm 54. I'm learning to balance my rest periods with my study and working a casual job. My mother didn't go to work and it was a financial nightmare. My father was the sole income earner. I became a widow at 22 with 2 babies and life was he'll. I did seasonal work to cope and my babies were brought up with my mother and father while I worked. I keep busy during the day and sleep in the afternoon and stay up all night. This has been on and off during my life. I haven't been medicated for a few years which can sometimes be a nightmare. When I'm happy I'm happy when I'm down I'm down. I just cruze through life. I've found it difficult in later life to find my calling in life. I've had so many jobs and couldn't stick with them. I'm still job hunting.

My name is Jaylin. I just turned 18 and recently went through a break up with my long-term girlfriend. Yesterday I decided to do some research into Bipolar Disorder after recognizing my recent mood swings. I figured it would be useful to learn about since my mom has also had a life-long battle with mental health and has been diagnosed with Bipolar disorder herself.
I completely recognize everything that Gabe is saying. I see it in myself daily. The cycles, the impulsiveness, sudden depressive bouts, lack of understanding others frustrations and false memories. I even have the sense of “mundane suicidal urges” in which you actually believe it’s just plain and simple the next appropriate response to how you’re currently feeling, not actually understanding how it would ruin you and everything around you literally.
Now that I understand what’s been going on with me and how my actions are affecting others I’m ready to GENUINELY apologize while actually know what my issues are for the first time in a long time.
    Thank you so much❤ for

I've gone from believing my diagnosis of bipolar to not believing it exists . I'm 68 now. My problems started in my mid teens. First hospitalization at 25. I've never had psychosis so the shrinks using antipsychotics for a mood stabilize made my symptoms worse. Paradoxical effect. Every antidepressant I've tried (at least 15) never helped. I do not tolerate psych meds. Any of them I've tried. I finally gave up on psychiatry. Each time I would try a new Dr., they wouldn't listen. They would try putting me on the same meds I couldn't tolerate. I've been given so many different diagnoses and refuse to believe I'm that flawed. I do have major consistent bone crushing depression along with generalized anxiety disorder. I still struggle with suicidal ideation. That's a symptom of the lying depression. I even tried Ect once in my early 30s with disastrous results. After 2nd ect treatment, I was back in the hospital for a week with total amnesia for 6 days. Swore I'd never put my kids or self through that again. In 2012, out of desperation, I let another Dr. talk me into trying Ect again. Same result. After 5 treatments, I was out to lunch (amnesia) again. Had several conversations with my kids I have no memory of during that time. It was scary to say the least. I had unilateral ECT both times. If I had bilateral, I think my experience would have even been worse. Turns out I was never a candidate for Ect in the first place as I had about three grand Mal seizures in the past. The Dr's. never found a cause for the seizures. When I was at my lowest, I also had more than one abusive psychiatrist. I still need help. Unfortunately, I don't trust shrinks anymore. It's all trial and error. The Dr's. are unable to give me a definitive diagnosis. I have hypothyroid and Hashimotos. The Dr's. don't factor that in. I would love some improvement mainly for the sake of my two adult children and grandchildren. Of course for myself too but mainly so my kids don't have to see their Mom depressed anymore. Obviously, I need to write my own book.

This replay is after my 3rd real life ending attempt.
    Somehow animals saved my life.
Ppl look at you and they have theyr opinnion.
Ppl look at someone who is in a chair becouse he/she can't walk, they are willing to help, but if you look "normal" but you are in a "mental chair" they don't belive and bring you (me) up to the point when i just want to leave this world.
If i want i should write a book about those things, becouse ppl beleve only what they see and you as a person has t o proove ... why? ... why do i have first to proove something that is hidden? (on the first look) but someone who is in a chair and cannot walk they belive.
Is physical health more worth than psy illness?

A good doctor is essential. As a bipolar, it is your duty to find out the right medicine mix. Facilities are only short term, much better is a good doctor, on a monthly basis. Good luck!

This guy has ADHD first and maybe depression second but my goodness, he's all over the place when he talks. He doesn't answer a straight question with a straight answer, he bounces all over the room which is what ADHD people do. As a psychologist I'll tell you. In order to develop coping skills you need to write them down. First, write down things that make you feel sad or depressed. On a completely separate sheet of paper write down the things that either make you happy or at least used to make you happy and that you think you can still do today. That includes food, the amount of rest, favorite TV shows, interesting people to talk with, and which activities. Then mix and match which means to look at the negative things you go through and see if there is something on the positive page that you feel is easy to do when you're in that negative mood. It is just like school. You first listen to the teacher tell you what to do or how to feel. You make notes, you do your homework, and then you discuss how you have evolved the next day with the teacher and then you go on to the next step. Also, if you did not do your homework the teacher will help you understand why and to take necessary steps in order to set different goals. So your homework for tomorrow is to walk up to 10 strangers over the course of an entire day and compliment them by telling them that you like their shoes or their nails or the way they wear their hair or their smile. But never say this person is pretty or handsome. Go deeper than that. Their smile in return will help you feel better.

I was going through a depressive phase coming on and I shut the world out and it can last for months and I end relationships due to it as I feel so worthless and empty and feel they deserve better than me. The isolation and pulling away is a big part of bipolar episodes for many people.

Possibly it's our reward for the psychological suffering we have to endure. I know this is going to sound harsh, but can people pick on the different in between the two. The societally accepted one is only able to say a maximum of three basic words. The other one has a bright mind. One is almost a high school dropped out, the other one I suspect a highly achiever for the current educational standards. I'm glad he found a job that allows him to shine through with his skills and temperament.

Getting diagnosed while behind bars only gets you meds so that you are no trouble for the facility. VA doesnt want you and society ignores you.
