Hi there Sandy, it's always a pleasure to take part on your expertice and knowledge, thanks for that! I worked quite a time in CAD design for an engineering bureau and casting is a great method to produce mainly plastic components due to their geometric complexity and the benefit of a rather quick process in injection moulding. Metal casting requires the same design rules as plastic casting, so same wall thickness, ribs to strengthen the part in it self, drafts and so on which leads also to a in comparison higher surface area and material volume instead of sheet metal, if it's about a beam or another structural part. In another point of view and generally speaking casted metal components are rather stiff, stress resistant against pressure (but not in pulling direction) and rigid, which makes them perfect for housings, machine frames and other structural members. So to create a high section modulus which safes you mass to withstand a certain force, you normally go for a hollow part - in short words, that's the key on modern body-in-white design, to assemble (hot or cold) stamped sheet metal parts by welding, gluing or both. Okay, after that explanation, I still wonder why Tesla decided to go for such a large casted part on the rear? Also why they have to use around 70 different parts in sheet metal design to get their rear underfloor section? Normally you can do that even with a deep boot well by a multi-stage press, at least my French car has such a compact design and that seems to be quite cost effective. So with all the difficulties in design and manufacturing, I still wonder if such a part as the "megacast" is really necessary? I mean the car-body itself is quite a flexing structure which gets softer over time but I also wonder about the contact joints between the megacast and the other sheet-metal. Will it be able to hold tightly over time or will the joints be weakened /break off due to the different part properties (cast/sheet)? Long story short: I'd like elegant designed parts and think that espacially the rear part of Model 3 or Y could be much more elegant designed, than it is currently. What would you say?
I own a 2020 Model 3 Performance here in France, I absolutely love it but i had to adjust myself the doors alignment. It took me 20 mins. Why that wasn't done in factory ? The car is absolutely gorgeous, a joy to drive with awesome tech but come on Tesla, these build issues are still there, and it's a valid argument of Tesla bashers. So please Tesla, put together your cars correctly to close the mouth of these bashers !
Thanks Sandy, I’m learning a lot about cars and manufacturers/materials from you channel. The real learning I get is about the mindset behind good practices.

New Zealand supplied Model 3 cars don't have these issues. The only issue I had was paint issues around the doors and rear trunk on my 2019 Tesla. Tesla NZ employed a very good paint shop and had no issue with me having these paint problems fixed to the standard I expect. Panel gaps are good and the interior was good as well. 15 months later and 16,000 kilometres there has been no rattles or any other issues.
Just an idea: this car was possibly rushed to try to meet the 500k sales deadline at year end? Wonder if it's the same on one that's built today for example?
Thank you straight shooter Sandy. You help everyone by calling out the deficiencies as well as the highlights. Not why I come here, the engineering magic, but I do see the utility in your work. Personally I'm more interested in the car utility than the finish but I know I'm an outlier.
Got mine on the 6th of Jan. My gaps between panels are near perfect but some panels are a bit higher than others. The joints at the top are uneven just as the one shown here. Other than that, I'm extremely happy with my purchase. Never imagine driving is this much more fun!
As I recommended years ago, Tesla finally has a req out for a robotic inspection engineer. I think they are serious now. I look forward to seeing what effect those inspections have on future build quality.
Tesla is a large enough company now that the end of quarter pushes (which I suspect lead to this) should not be leading to poor quality control. My hope is that local supply chain and manufacturing will help resolve this.
I'd like to see Tesla give up its 'end of quarter push.' Settle into a nice steady production and delivery routine and quit trying to please Wall Street.
Yeah I hope this was the last time. They probably really wanted that 500k vehicles 2020 goal. Elon assumed back in 2014 they would make 500k cars in 2020.
@Life is better when I do something. Usually one only sees that, when it is pointed out to them. Sorry, this is not something that I knew about before Sandy and others pointed it out. Maybe all my cars were perfect.
I agree with him. 500k vehicles made and the same or different issues. I refused my Model 3 delivery due to some paint issues. The panel gaps were there too. I was surprised that some people signed paperwork, took some selfies, and drove off without inspecting the vehicle. I would like to add that I am picking up our Model Y this weekend. Lol
Thank you for taking the time to address panel gaps it’s 2021, why isn’t this something of the past! This is some thing I believe is easily solved if they put the funding behind it. You can be a true Tesla fan and owner pointing this stuff out without coming off as if you want the company to fail! Definitely would like to see this fixed before my lease is up next year and I buy the next Model 3!
Great review. You might try to readjust the passanger side door during a future episode and see if you can get tolerances to be better. This would imply Tesla could improve Model 3 quality rather easily.
Quite exiting review for next coming weeks !! - One thing interesting to check would be the wheel alignment, so many people complain that the tires didn't lasted but I am sure the alignment was not correct. On my brand new Model 3, I noticed that all toe angles were out of range, which would increase the wear of the tires, however the other angles were in the range.
The definitely need to work on the fit issues. But at the end of the day: panel gaps are in about 5639827th place on the list of important things about a car.
The misaligned doors in my M3 are the reason the seals make so much noise. The service center was able to tweak the doors enough to reduce the creaking and crunching but it’s still there and now the rear doors stick out so much relative to the front doors that dirt builds up on the edge. I’m so thankful this bothers Sandy as much as it does me.
And yet from things I've read American automakers some decades ago put that high on the importance list, and put effort into the external fit and how the door clunked just right, instead of effort into better engineering. It was too much about how the buyer reacted on the showroom floor. But most manufacturers do better now, and Tesla certainly should, when their cars excel in so many other ways.
@@donjones4719 yes I certainly wouldn’t prefer Tesla have better fit and finish if it meant their technology was the same as other manufacturers but this has been going on for too long and I’m concerned it’s creating a culture of tolerance within Tesla for less than ideal quality
Many reviewers have not used to key features of Tesla in cold weather testing. One is to condition the battery prior to departure which can be done by turning on climate control 20-30 minutes before you leave or selecting departure time in the charging menu. Also When approaching a supercharger make sure that it is programmed in navigation so the battery preheats automatically for much faster charging. You probably already know this but...
Sandy, I really enjoy your honesty when reviewing this car. Warts and all. Being genuine and telling it like it REALLY is. I think that the bad panel finish is due to one thing only. Get the cars out, as fast as possible, to make up the numbers. Sacrificing build quality.

I’m glad you’re calling this issues out. Improvements can always be found. I remember going to the Tesla showroom when the 3 first came out and I was kindof shocked at how shaky the quality was for the price they were asking. It was rough around the edges to say the least. It felt like a car that was 20 grand less than their price. Fast forward to today and I am taking delivery of a 22’ model 3 in two weeks. What I have seen regards build quality in the past few years has been a substantial improvement. Thank you Sandy for getting in Elon’s ear.
Today is the New Year’s Day! Sandy Claus just started the year! Pure outspoken Sandy. I hope Tesla is watching.
Got my M3LR a few days ago: perfect gaps. But it is a Shanghai build. I am in Australia.
Thanks Sandy! I’m Engineer in the automotive industry as well and always enjoy your videos and learn from your experience :)
i love his honesty, dude never holds back. thank you sandy.
I think they have made significant improvements since this video was shot - the Model 3 I got in November has uniform panel gaps and paint finish is excellent.
thank you for the great presentation and evaluation - driving it for two months now and keep being stunned of its qualites and how much fun it is.. not to mention how practical, time and money saving
Picked up my 2021 model y late December, car is perfect. No paint or gap issues.
Just love the way you checked out the car. Sandy, you remind me of my best friend's father who was an engineer and a car lover, someone you can both trust and respect. My best friend's father passed away a few month's ago. It's sure nice to know you over the past few years. Thank-you so much.
Come on Tesla, listen to these issues Mr. Munro is pointing out.
As a designer and engineer manufacturing into big auto for 38 years I own a Tesla Model S now for 7 years and rack up high mileage. Pulled a good portion of it apart, It helps me to paint the picture on Tesla, I know the cars are compelling and can go the distance, I like most of what i see on the engineering side and first hand experience gives me confidence to keep my investments in place, the only thing is I cant keep buying Teslas and run big mileage, I need some one to do ruthless tear downs. Thank you Munro and Associates your work and channel allow me to second guess where Tesla is heading now and next.
Sandy, I knew I liked you when your camera panned left to reveal the obelisk with Zero comment on it. You left it alone for interpretation. Brilliant, my friend. Very quickly becoming one of my Favorite channels on TH-cam. My company's data center is right down the road from you on Crooks.
Sandy, Sandy, Sandy!!! Can’t wait to see her taken to pieces. Thank you Munro & Associates for the fantastic content!!!

Thanks Sandy! I love watching you go through this process. I know this is a lot of work for you and the team. I'll be watching every episode as soon as it is released.
No bullshit, I love it! I’m from Norway where the days currently has just 7-8 hours of sunlight, so these videos will light up my days in tve coming days/weeks:)
Ditto. Plus love watching your beautiful Norway on Tesla Bjorn's channels from Canada. PS Saw Oslo in summer of 2019 and loved it!
Ah Norway where Tesla sales have collapsed and VW are doing very well
This is super important Mr Munro. I'm long in Tesla stock, and the brand. But when I look at this as a Swede, I get quite concerned. If I get in to the cheapest Volvo, or let's say something really cheep, a Renault. Basically anything from Europe. The fit and finish is spot on. It's cheep, but spot on. Tesla is expensive, and need to sort this out, both for the believers and the non believers. Tesla is the clear future...
Mr. Munro, so glad to finally be in at the start of an "SSD" (Slow Scheduled Deconstruction) since I missed your previous efforts at their inception. Really looking forward to this...
Looking forward to see you tearing it apart.
I am amazed how much information you can provide just by looking at the parts.
He has already torn down the 3 and Y, he loves Tesla and their cars. Check out the past videos
Thank you for your honest assessment of the Model 3. I do want a Tesla but Elon really needs to talk with Sandy about the panel gaps.
I am extremely excited to see the tear down. 2021 here we come!
Hi Sandy give us some insight on how much it would cost to do retool for Tesla if they wanted to fix the panel gaps
Its not tooling it's the person fitting it which is why I would have chinese or german built One
@@alanrickett2537 I personally have zero exp manufacturing ,although I feel that you need a car plant in every continent to turn a profit reliably ... My main purpose for asking the question was trying to figure out how easily can this be fixed and what are the things one should be looking to get it done right.
@@MrEtronic my veiw is it's the people/culture. The cars off the china production line are not reporting this as an issue.
Some cars are prefect on gaps some are not as the parts are indentical it's a line issue. So either the automation has a problem or the guys/girls on the line do.
Sad the left sad was perfect though.
Yes!! Really looking forward to this series.
Thanks for keeping us up to date on Tesla progress Sandy!
I just checked my early 2018 model 3’s tail lights and it has the same issues as the 2021. Bumped on the passenger side, smoother on the drivers side.
3 years on, and still the shoddy build quality.
For Pete's sake please replace that guy who is doing the fitout on the passenger side of the car.
That struck me as a very fair first impressions video. I look forward to further videos on this model.
Thanks Sandy, I’m learning a lot about cars and manufacturers/materials from you channel. The real learning I get is about the mindset behind good practices.
Im a high schooler and always have been a Tesla fan but just wish they had good QC. I plan on getting a Tesla once I get my first job out of college. Really hoping that Tesla fixes these issues by that time. Great video!
Tesla is overpriced.. German car industry is steping in EV .. it would be interesting on future

Sandy, we appreciate your candid and straight forward opinion. We all love Tesla. Can’t give em a pass for it, though! Still amazing cars!
Great stuff! Appreciate the honesty!
Love Sandy's spontaneous comments. He's a straight shooter which is uncommon today and very much appreciated. I can't wait for Sandy's Rivian R1T vs CyberTruck. I have reservations on both, and pro's & con's for both. Time will tell.

YESSSSS Tesla and Munro is back!!!!!
Thank you. Now, I’m going to be here all day waiting for more episodes. LOL
THANK YOU ! AWESOME VIDEO ! LIKE ALWAYS @ MUNRO !
We did get this at the very end of the year.
Could be but in a largely automated assembly line that really shouldn't happen.
You are truly an American gem! I love watching you talk!
Thank you straight shooter Sandy. You help everyone by calling out the deficiencies as well as the highlights. Not why I come here, the engineering magic, but I do see the utility in your work. Personally I'm more interested in the car utility than the finish but I know I'm an outlier.
I'm glad my 2021 doesn't have gap issues. That was my main concern when I went to pick it up.
Can't wait for a full teardown!
Like to see SANDY teardown iD4 and MUCK-e and compare them to 2021 Model Y.
Finally
The effect will be zero car sales for a couple of months ! It won't let anything through QC
I picked up my M3 LR Aug 24th 21` and all the gaps are near perfect all around. I think they may have listened to Sandy.
The sequel to Al Pacino's "The Scent of a Woman" will be Sandy Munro in "The Scent of a Tesla".
No scent, it doesn't drink gas nor spew smog. But maybe poor paint job can still produce a scent. I guess your comment still holds.

Sandy Keepin it real, love your analysis.
Constructive & insightful criticism.
I'm so excited to see this get taken apart!
So excited for this new series, can't wait to see it taken apart and evaluated.
@@Urgelt likewise
This is perfect timing, we will get ours in 6-8 weeks. I really look forward to the teardown.
“That flushness is not flush”
Better than the other side!
Irrefutable logic is how Munro do. He sees what's what, and consequently what's not.
So what???
@Life is better when I do something. Usually one only sees that, when it is pointed out to them. Sorry, this is not something that I knew about before Sandy and others pointed it out. Maybe all my cars were perfect.
I agree with him. 500k vehicles made and the same or different issues. I refused my Model 3 delivery due to some paint issues. The panel gaps were there too. I was surprised that some people signed paperwork, took some selfies, and drove off without inspecting the vehicle. I would like to add that I am picking up our Model Y this weekend. Lol
1:00 Why is there a tall metal box in the middle of the garage?... Oh😳
Thank you for taking the time to address panel gaps it’s 2021, why isn’t this something of the past! This is some thing I believe is easily solved if they put the funding behind it. You can be a true Tesla fan and owner pointing this stuff out without coming off as if you want the company to fail! Definitely would like to see this fixed before my lease is up next year and I buy the next Model 3!
what would we do without sandy 🥳
thanks homie
Hi from France! Didn't know that a french stitching existed, superb analysis, always a pleasure to watch your videos sir !
Great review. You might try to readjust the passanger side door during a future episode and see if you can get tolerances to be better. This would imply Tesla could improve Model 3 quality rather easily.
It would be fine for me as I live in the UK, driver's side looks good to me😉
Was waiting the whole video for him to say "Hey you kids, get off my lawn!" Great video though! I am placing my order now.

Quality work! Love the honesty. Constructive criticism is very important to me (investor) and a fan of Tesla.
Can't afford it, but I love it. Waiting for the Y in Australia though.
Hoping the MIC models land soon with reduced cost 🇦🇺
Not when i'm paying for a brand new car it's not. They don't advertise uneven panel gaps on their fancy website.
2nd hand cars there less expectation.
Of course it had to be Sandy behind the monolith conspiracy!
Sandy, I really enjoy your honesty when reviewing this car. Warts and all. Being genuine and telling it like it REALLY is.
I think that the bad panel finish is due to one thing only.
Get the cars out, as fast as possible, to make up the numbers. Sacrificing build quality.
Looking forward to see what you find in this teardown, maybe more whiskey!
Fantastic. Thanks Sandy & Team! Looks like you just missed the new LED matrix headlights though
They're illegal in the US so it won't have them.
@@boostav They’re actually shipping now in the US with the matrix feature disabled. People have taken delivery of new cars with them in the past weeks.
At the very least it’s expected they could turn on an adaptive cornering feature when the software’s ready. Matrix functionality could be enabled with a future update if NHTSA finally allows it. In the meantime, it seems new buyers are very pleased with them even though they’re just emulating traditional high/low beams at the moment.
@@cheesetomatoes Interesting, thanks for letting me know. I thought they were still fitting the old lights on US spec models.
Sandy, can you fix or adjust the panel gaps on this car before you tear it down? Would be interesting to see how it should have been done.
Yes, everyone point out panel gaps, but no one try to fix it.
@Strawberry Kiys maybe so, but I would like sandy to point out the root causes for this cars gaps.
@Strawberry Kiys BS i am on my third new Tesla the first two got fixed by simple adjusting. The 2021 model didn't have any issues. It's plain and simple, they are lazy at the freemont factory, if they had a working QC department people responsible would be fired.
Thanks for the review. “New Car Smell” for after shave? Love it! Great message at the end encouraging us to recognize front line employees. Couldn’t agree more.
Does model 3 still have paint peeling off the bottom of the doors and rocker panels? And does dirt still get stuck underneath the back of the car?
Can't wait to see the complete break down to reveal the deeper things. Hopefully, some of the improvement Sandy raved about the model Y gets implemented into the newer 3 version.
For the Love of God - will some one at Tesla just listen to Mr Munro - fix the fricken panel gaps - how hard can it be?
Halfway there at least. My 1988 Audi 5000S was worse...and it was built in Germany. Minor issue compared to the overall car.
@@DouglasJMark you mention it was 1988 and now
😮
Great opening shots and a wink to the mysterious metal monolith appearing all over the USA :D Super exited about this (upcoming) series! In august I had my first experience as a passenger in a Model 3, did a road trip of 500+ miles (805-ish km), including Autobahn speeds in Germany. What a machine! The acceleration from 60mph (100km/h) is just insane! A true kick in the back side feeling when the throttle went all the way down.
So, I am super exited and curious what Sandy and his team will find out :)
