After less than a week with my new M3+, I like it even better each time I drive it! My 'Day 1' M3 was the best car I have ever had in many decades of driving and the only one that I kept for over three years. This new one is significantly more refined and even, perhaps sophisticated. There are many small things, like the magnetic catches on the glovebox and center console lid, the smoother and quieter ride, to the pleasing 'thunk' of the doors that contribute to it being a vehicle that is greater than the sum of its parts. I like the precious front end look better myself. I bought a model Y late last year because I saw where they were going with the style.... particularly with the steering wheel. I like stalks. Tesla may have to go back to them as EU safety laws are changing and may require them. We will see.
0:23 Nice to show the Model Y teardown, however it would have been more interesting to comment the new 'body in white' of the new Highland Model 3 that Tesla had published instead. - In fact, the most noticeable changes from the previosus Model 3 are: (1) the removal of the front firewall but also (2) the removal of the rear speaker shelf, so making the Model 3 as a hatchback or a Shooting brake estate would be no so difficult. However, no front or rear casting was introduced for this new Highland Model 3. - I imagine that introducing casting would have require more changes to the production line, adding more cost, and maybe there was not enough capacity for making additional casting from the existing ModelY and Cybertruck Giga press.
I prefer the distinctive "frog" look of the original Model 3. You know it's a Tesla. The refresh could be any car manufacturer. The refresh interior: the light strip is annoying and the new dashboard looks and feels cheap. The refresh door feels too high, inside because the armrest is much lower. Not having stalks isn't too bad but the plastic on the steering wheel feels like cheap plastic. I like the new seats and the suspension and interior sound quality is noticeably improved. Too many buttons on the steering wheel though. I'll be happy keeping my 2023 3. Oh! Almost forgot. The door closes effortlessly and with a confident thump. Sounds firm and solid over the original, which Almost sold me on the refresh.
I drove the Model 3 "Highland". I think what makes Tesla's look so good is the fish tank like bubble which is clean and lets everyone see inside. The White seats and Ambient lightning make it look really upscale - even when it really isn't. The plastic "vegan leather" looks great in White - and equally decent in Black. The center display looks futuristic even though it complicates simplistic controls normally handled by hard buttons. I really like the Model 3 Highland, but it's the Model Y refresh I'm more anxious to see. THE Model Y is more practical and that's why it sells so well worldwide.

There is nothing at a 35k dollar price point or up to 50k that beats the value, tech, and quality in this car. So when someone says they are getting (insert competing EV here) for 10-20k more I often wonder is a cute design and buttons galore really what drives the wallet. And if someone gets an even more expensive ICE car in the same category…bless their hearts
I fkn hate buttons. My model 3 was recently sideswiped and it's in the shop getting fixed. The rentals have more buttons on the steering wheel alone than any video game controller. Then there's more buttons on the door, more buttons on the left side of the dash, more buttons on the right side of the dash, more buttons on the console near the gear shift. More buttons on the ceiling. It's freaking insane how many buttons there are. I miss my Model 3.
Sandy may think the stalk delete is a non-issue but he’s wrong. I’m a User Experience developer and the steering wheel buttons fall far short of the functionality of the stalks from the previous generation. Namely, when turning, the buttons move with the wheel, forcing the user to locate them to engage/disengage signals. In Europe, roundabouts are a thing and require signalling to exit. With this design the driver’s left hand must be in the 7 o’clock position while turning to use the wheel buttons. The gear selection now requires touchscreen interaction and visual confirmation of drive direction. Before, reliable physical feedback provided certainty that the correct direction was selected. Single wipe, washer fluid spray, headlight flash and full beam could all be controlled with the left stalk and a left hand. Now some of these driving actions are on the right side of the wheel, requiring two hands more of the time. This change is more of the “the best part is no part” horseshit Musk subscribes to, it conveys no actual benefits and should be criticised as such.

That $35K Tesla announced in 2016 would be $45K today (29% inflation over the last 8 years). Another way to look at it is the current $39K price would have been $29K in 2016. It is directly competitive with ICE, without the maintenance hassles, expensive gas, noise and pollution issues of ICE.
Why are the pedal levers so close together on the 3? It's not like that on the Y. When I sat in the new 3, I noticed my foot was catching on both pedals.
Tesla offers the best software and batteries for $35.000. Plus FOTA and SOTA over the air updates. Navigation to superchargers is class leading even preconditioning batteries.
Do you think having the turn signals on the steering wheel would be an issue at a roundabout? I see a lot of complaints online especially people in Europe. If the car had steer by wire like the Cybertruck it would be less of issue I think. Wonder if they will do the same on the refreshed Model Y
I've had no problems signaling exits on roundabouts. It's a little odd, but so was using levers when your hands are at 12 and 6 positions on the steering wheel. Not sure why a couple of owners have problems with it. Seems to be easy to get used to. Maybe some hate change - and if so, Tesla is not the right car for them. I can see if you go 70 mph around a tight roundabout it could be difficult, although you're more likely to crash than worry about signals.
It only an issue if you used to putting the turn signal on while making the exit, which is already to late anyway. You put it on once you pass the previous exit before you go off, so you not turning the wheel to much during this process. You also get used to the position quickly, how quickly did you learn to turn the wipers on / turn signal on without looking at it, even tho it blocked by the wheel you still control it blindly. Or change music on the wheel without looking etc. The buttons also have haptic feedback, so you know if you hit it. People are in general afraid of change, but i prefer the turn signal on the wheel, it means you are at all times with 2 hands firmly on the wheel while making maneuvers.
Pricing is surely getting quite sane at Tesla...I would go with the Y for roof height. But, I just can't bring myself to abandon my Cherry 1996 Ford Aerostar XLT 3.0 V6 cruiser...
I'm not sure where Munro get's their pricing but ah... just a reminder that the Model 3 (as of March '24) actually starts at $38,990 and a Chevy Bolt starts at $26,500... so yeah a car that costs nearly 50% more (47% more to be precise) has nicer door panels.
Agree that the Bolt is a smaller car but the comparison to the Bolt was made in the original video. They implied that the two vehicles had similar pricing... which they absolutely do not. At these lower price points even a 10% price difference can be enough to out-price a buyer in that market. Also, plenty of "new" Bolts are still on dealer lots, which means you can probably get them even cheaper than MSRP. @@4literv6
On the Tesla website for rear wheel drive it says $35,990 * Prices above include potential incentives and gas savings of $3,000. Purchase Price $38,990. Carl just glanced at it before filming. honest mistake.
Tesla should incorporate this video into their showrooms. It's a credible 3rd party evaluation of the increased value for Model 3. (Easy to incorporate.)
The Bolt scaled up to $35k with options, and it came with quite a bit in the base trim. It started at $26k before tax credits. And it eclipsed the M3 in terms of cargo space. I love the teardowns, but it always seems like Tesla gets graded on a curve, in this case Carl gave the M3 a $10k curve and a whole segment curve.
I loooooove that it doesn't have stalks. I own a model 3 from 2020 (the first refresh) and the stalks are stiff so it takes a bit of effort to push down every time. Thankfully now Tesla has one push for autopilot because the rapid down press before were quite irritating. Thanks for the review.

Could really use a dark headliner, looks better and doesn't show marks
Would it be possible to swap exterior refresh for the older model 3? Rear windows glass ?
Yep, just trade in your current M3 for the Highland :)
Pricing is surely getting quite sane at Tesla...I would go with the Y for roof height. But, I just can't bring myself to abandon my Cherry 1996 Ford Aerostar XLT 3.0 V6 cruiser...
Carl did well on this one
I'm not sure where Munro get's their pricing but ah... just a reminder that the Model 3 (as of March '24) actually starts at $38,990 and a Chevy Bolt starts at $26,500... so yeah a car that costs nearly 50% more (47% more to be precise) has nicer door panels.
Bolts not in production though anymore now is it? And it's in the sub compact class of evs not mid size as the m3 is. 👍🏻

Some value for money. Great job Tesla ,
Tesla should incorporate this video into their showrooms.
On the German website it is still 43k €. So not that cheap as it sounds here.
VAT tax?
You forget Germany it with 21% tax, they talking pre-tax as it's in the US. So it is less then 35k without tax in Germany.
Carl on point❤
I loooooove that it doesn't have stalks. I own a model 3 from 2020 (the first refresh) and the stalks are stiff so it takes a bit of effort to push down every time. Thankfully now Tesla has one push for autopilot because the rapid down press before were quite irritating. Thanks for the review.
Carl really knows his stuff. No wonder Sandy recruited him.
