  • In this video, I replace the drivers’ side blend door actuator on my 2008 Mustang. This actuator is also known as the main blend door actuator. It was making clicking noise. These steps will work on Mustangs from 2005-2009. I show how I determined the actuator was making the noise and complete removal and reinstall process. If you need help replacing the passenger side blend door actuator, see the video below.

    great video I have to replace mine I have already checked the other 3 and there all good so i know its the drive side one most videos i found want you to remove a lot more from your dash and I knew you could do it from behind the speedometer I had the ford dealership look at it they wanted 1600 to fix it said it took 6 hours to take the hole dash apart and 6 to put it back together i was freeking out so I came here on TH-cam and found out how to do it myself and the most time it took anyone on here was 3 hours total , I'm glade I found your video yes it is a pain in the ass to get to but I'm sure I can get this done in under a hour thank you for posting this

      Be aware the driver's side upper actuator is the hardest to do. The flexible duct work is partly in the way and the original factory actuator is molded in a way that makes it impossible to get the 8mm socket on head of one of the screws. It's a daunting task, but not a $1600 daunting task. lol The replacement actuator is easier to install because it is a better design which means you can get a docket on that one troublesome screw.

    I just did this work on the Blend & Defrost actuators.
    Here's my tip. GET A HELPER. This is a two person job. You handle the motor, screw and socket-end. The helper operates the tool. This made this job EASY !
    Get the Harbor Freight LONG 1/4" extension rods, (3) 1/4" universal joints, use a 1/4" screw driver handle. You will assemble about a 2.5 foot long extension with all of these parts. This will make a LONG wiggly flexible socket-screw-driver. Take out glove box. Lay on your back in floorboard, face upwards, and you put motor and screw in place. Don't reach through the glove box hole.
    Here's the key:
    LET YOUR HELPER OPERATE THE TOOL. While you hold everything in place, the helper does the screwing in.
    BTW... there is an alignment pin on these, that helps getting them aligned.
    I also had to let the armature cycle some. to get it in a position, to where it would mate up with the Defrost mechanism.
    This method should work just as well with the driver's side.

    After asking my question on your other video, I found this one. I tried for hours and couldn’t get it out... after seeing you do it, I realized I could had totally moved the ac tube higher than I was... also I broke the bad actuator off the screw so now I just have the top screw there... this video is the best out of all for the driver side.... I haven’t done the reset yet but I only have feet and defrost, could that be because I don’t have this one hooked up. Know this old video but hop for an answer!

      Yes, your problems are because the actuator is missing. Check out this site. It explains what every actuator does. www.svtperformance.com/threads/a-c-blend-door-motor.916280/

    Thanks for the video! I have used it multiple times unfortunately. I have replaced THIS actuator 4 times... soon to be 5 times in the last 5 years and the second time this year. I think I might be doing it wrong: I remove everything, then reconnect the car battery and use the cars power to get the arm in position, install actuator, disconnect battery then re-install the airbag.
    How should one get the arm aligned with the lever? Manuel force or using the car power as I did above?
    Any guess why I keep having to replace my actuator so much? I've posted on some forums with no real response... just wanting pics of my stang!

    • @chasingmustangs
      @chasingmustangs  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have seen issues where you need to connect the actuator to the wire harness but not install it. You then do the reset instructions . You then install the actuator in the car and then do the rest steps again. I also started purchasing motorcraft actuator and have seen fewer issues as well

  • @lt1_jio363
    @lt1_jio363 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    So, what if I already installed the new one? (I opened the new one up and moved the gears in order to align in to get it to fit how the old one was positioned.)
    Would you recommend I reopen it and put it back in the position it came in, reset it, and THEN reinstall it?
    Or can I remove the fuses and it should know where to realign the actuator when I reset it?
    Thank you in advance for the help!

    I had air blowing out of the defrost vents only and it wouldn’t change when I would switch the knob. So I replaced the upper passenger side actuator and it worked got the air blowing the front vents. Was working fine for a couple months until I noticed the other day that when i was turning the temp to hot the air would blow less than when I turned to cold. Then suddenly I was back again with air blowing out of the defrost. Not sure if I replaced the wrong one or what could be the problem.

    • @chasingmustangs
      @chasingmustangs  ปีที่แล้ว

      What I have seen is the vent arm disconnecting from the actuator arm. If the actuator is not screwed down completely, that will happen. I have also seen actuators where the arm peace sticking up is not long enough. Got to love actuator problems.

  • @sethfrady
    @sethfrady 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm having a hard time figuring out which one it is also, if its the passenger side will I hear the clicking on that side? Because mine sounds like its coming from behind the steering wheel also. All my front vents don't work, but my defrost works fine.

    • @chasingmustangs
      @chasingmustangs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the temperature accusatory (drivers side) fails, it can sometimes affect the other actuators from working. If is possible you have two failed actuators, the drivers site and one on the passengers side. I would move forward with replacing the drivers side and see if it also fixes the passenger side issues.

      Is usually defrost actuator, located on the passenger side. Check out my videos as I have one were I replace that actuator. Both the Temperature blend and Defrost actuator can cause this problem. 90% of the team it is the defrost actuator.

    The 2 vents on driver side throw warmer air while passanger side throws normal cold air and It doesn't make any ticking noise. Do you think it could be this driver actuator? Because i know these mustangs dont have dual climate control so its weird that one side is warm

    • @chasingmustangs

    Our '08 Mustang clicks loudly six or seven times when the ignition is first turned on. Like in your video, all the heat and A/C functions are working. This noise sounds like it's coming from the left (driver) side of the dash, just to the right of the instrument cluster. EDIT: It fooled me! I pulled the bezel and cluster, but the clicking doesn't cause any vibration in this actuator. I can feel it in the parts behind the glove box though. Incidentally, the driver's side isn't difficult if you have a helper to get under the dash. The vent tubing can be jammed upward using rags and blocks, and that gives access to the upper screw holding the actuator. The whole job shouldn't take longer than 1-1/2 hours if you do that (and if you have a nimble helper). Here's a page that describes it and includes links to a few photos (reply #55): www.concoursmustang.com/forum/index.php?topic=10140.45

      Check your coolant too. It is normal for these cars to go down on coolant over time without any leaks. If it is low on coolant it can cause a loss of heat.

    I'm dreading this project.
    I live in Florida,,,it's so hot here I'm waiting until the fall to tackle this project.
    I can't imagine doing this install in 100° heat.
    I have to replace the driver's side and at least one more acuator on the left side. It looks like the top bolt is a bitch,,,! Am I right in saying the top bolt gets bolted in from in the direction from the driver's side to the passenger side,,?
    Like if you were holding the bolt in your hand, the bolt head would be towards the left and the threads to the right..?

      Correct, the bolts/screws on the drivers side face to the passenger side. The top/front screw is the hardest one to install. You have to use a flex sock extender to install it, plus push the duck up to make some room.
