  • In this video, I show how to replace a 05 - 09 Mustang blend door actuator. My Mustang was stuck with all air blowing out the defrost. To fix, I had to replace the blend door actuator on the passenger side.

    MANY THANKS for the suggestion to remove the airbag! Did the job start to finish this afternoon. Works like new!
    For anyone who's confused about these actuators, the driver side module behind the instrument cluster is the Main Panel-Floor actuator. The upper module on the passenger side is the Main Defrost actuator. The lower module on the passenger side is the Temperature Blend actuator, and the horizontal module all the way on the right is the Air Inlet actuator.
    In my 2008 V6 base, the part number stamped on the original 2007-dated Defrost actuator was 6R33-19E616-BA. The new MotorCraft part is 6R3Z19E616-B. The package also says YH-1870. This is the same module that's used on the driver side for Panel-Floor. I bought mine today from a Ford dealer because of all the bad reviews on aftermarket units. Cost was about $40. It's installed now, and the clicking is gone. I opened up the old module, and two teeth were broken off one of the gears.
    THANKS AGAIN!

Hot and cold temp, floor air, panel air, defrost air, everything like it should be. Guess that won't last long, huh? I can't even touch the upper actuator screw through the glove box opening. The bottom screw of the actuation is almost impossible to get to, without removing the airbag. I spent hours trying to get the new actuator installed. After removing the airbag, it took less than an hour. Also, when you remove the airbag, you should be able to see the vent arm. I found the easiest way to line everything up was to screw the actuator in half way then move the vent arm, to line up with actuator arm. These are a pain to replace. Only takes about five minutes to pull out the airbag.

    • @chasingmustangs
      @chasingmustangs  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you pull the fuses (with the battery connected) you reset the environmental control system, which puts all the actuator at the same spot. If you don't do this and your new actuator is at the wrong position, you could break one of the vent levers or the actuator will be in the wrong position. After you pull the fuses, and turn on the AC, the system does nothing for about 5 seconds, because it is resetting all the actuators. I hope this helps.

      If you change the temperature control from defrost to AC and the air comes out the correct vents, you know it is not the blend door actuators. That would leave you with the air circulation or defrost actuators. My guess is the defrost actuator is bad. These are the easier actuators to get to and replace. Hope this helps.

    So my problem is that the defrost works, and the little tiny vents above the front vents work. But my front vents don't work at all. It sounds like the clicking is coming from behind the steering wheel. Do you think its the driver door actuator?

    • @chasingmustangs

      Sorry, I did not read this post before answer the second one you sent me. This points to the defrost actuator being broken, which is the top one on the passenger side. Especially if it is stuck on defrost. It is the actuator, I replace in this video. The noise could sound like it is coming from behind the steering wheel. You can always pull the glove both and touch the actuator before replacing. If it is pulsator and not moving, you know it is the defective one. Are you supposed to turn the mode on a specific setting before replacing the actuator? Such as no air, defrost, etc? I used to have cold air and it went out by only blowing through the defrost. I replaced the actuator and it now blows normal again but it’s not as cold nor strong. The reason I feel like it’s not the compressor is because I turn on the heater and it as well doesn’t blow as hot and when I switch it to defrost it blows cold. Help please

    • @chasingmustangs
      @chasingmustangs  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because you disconnect the battery during actuator replacement, the mode doesn't mater. You just need to do the actuator reset instructions when done. I would double check the compressor fuse, that AC compressor is connected to the harness. If they are good, then you need to check the driver side template door actuator behind the cluster.

    Hi thanks for the video. I've installed a new actuator on the driver's side and the top actuator on the passenger's side since they were both clicking. I am getting ready to connect the battery but don't want to mess this up. You mentioned turning off environmental controls and pulling fuses 10 and 12. Do I need to pull any more fuses since I've replaced 2 of 4 actuators? Also just confirming the steps. 1. connect battery 2. pull fuses. 3. turn off controls for 30 seconds. 4. replace fuses. Does that sound right? Thanks again. Also had a trick for replacing the actuator on the drivers side without taking the car apart. I removed the easy bolt then broke out the old actuator made it so much easier to then remove the pain top bolt and replace with new actuator. I just used a screwdriver handle to prop up the air duct. It wasn't easy but easier than removing the dash.

      You need to pull the fuses, so you don't ruin one of your actuators. Resting the actuators makes sure they are all in the same position. if you don't do this, you could break an actuator or one of the door arms. The steps you listed above are correct. Just make sure you pull the fuses for at least 1 minute, before putting them back in. Hope this helps.

    I've looked everywhere to find an install procedure for the defrost actuator on my 2014. I can see it from the glove compartment hole at the very top of the dash, much like this video. I had multiple people tell me that it is behind the guage cluster, but I don't think that is true for the '14. I can see the air inlet (recirc) actuator on the blower motor, the temp blend actuator on the left wall by the blower motor, the floor vent actuator right next to the temp blend on the left wall, and this defrost actuator at the very top of the wall, above the temp blend and floor vent actuators. I have a base model with manual controls. I believe the one they are talking about is for '05-'12, but am not sure because of the mixed answers.
    Does anybody happen to know if this procedure is the same on '14 Mustangs?

    • @chasingmustangs

      Ok, the true actuator for the defrost is on the passenger side. There is an actuator on the drivers side behind the cluster. The drivers side one seldom goes bad and will not cause the vent to be stuck on defrost. Check it this diagram. www.svtperformance.com/threads/a-c-blend-door-motor.916280/. I have never owned a 2010 to 2014 Mustang, so I don't know if the instructions are different. The part number says it works for 05 to 14 Mustangs, so I am assuming the instructions are the same.

      So my manual (not an official Ford manual), says you have to pull the fuses with the battery connected, to it put the new actuators in the correct alignment state. American Muscles web site says the same thing. If your have a Ford manual the states something different, please share it. I own a limited set of Ford shop manuals, because of the cost.

      This points to the defrost actuator, which is the one replaced in this video. Try this, connect the actuator and don't install it. Mark the actuator arm location and then perform the reset instructions. If it is at a different location, then reinstall it. I have seen the need to perform the reset before installing the actuator in the car.
