❤I thought this the dead South was the greatest love song ever written no matter what happened they were going to be together forever then someone told me he shot his wife but 3 rounds of hell sounded like a boxing ring so they were going to be together forever or at least until he shot his wife. As an old Progressive Rocker, how on earth did I stumble onto this? Purely enjoyable, unique, talented. It's like these boys created their own genre. Bluegrass, Folk and Country, all fused into one.
Gotta agree! As an old 75 year-old Vietnam vet, The Beatles, Pink Floyd and the Doors are my three heavies. But I recognize great music regardless of style or mode. These guys sound great! I'll keep listening....
I haven't heard a bad song from them yet. Been listening for a few years now. The day they put out a bad song I will keep listening. Nobody is perfect, but their sound is the closest to it.
I only discovered them myself today... and I have been listening to their stuff all evening (and I'll probably be up late tonight as well!). They are great!
My favorite band, the harmony, is amazing. I just saw them in the front row live in Tucson, Arizona. I will forever be in awe of them. Listening to them makes me happy.
Wow! I had no idea. Thank you for telling me that. Reminds me of that scene in the Holy Grail- "She turned me into a Canadian!"... "Well, I got better..." LOL just kidding@@jacklabonte6839
This is why I really like this group: the musicianship, the singing, the impeccable timing, clever lyrics, cool clothes, and the occasional goofy behavior that indicates a bit of cheekiness but always professional.
Not only am I totally obsessed with this song ,I am totally obsessed by The Dead South. So looking forward to seeing them in the UK.They are superb artists and I am truely knocked out by their talent.
Where did you see them? We went to see them in Roundhouse in London .. absolutely phenomenal! Loved every minute of it!! They are the nuts @@anglohero6295
This incredible song grabs you by the balls (or whatever you have down there) and takes root and implants itself in your brain. I cannot get it out of my head and I find myself humming it while I'm working. The mix of instrumentation along with those wonderful gruff vocals give me goose bumps and calls forth the wildest images from my imagination when I'm listening to it. Absolutely spectacular song. It's been a long dark dirty road And pocket full of gold I've been out here now All on my own It's real quiet here Just the way I like it here There's no one to bother me Except In 1955, born into Wadena's pride I laid my head on that Milligan creek bed When I was a young man I helped build this land Oh, I put down these rails as a CPR man Thought I'd live forever With my heart in my pocket Oh, my gun by my side And my feelings in a locket Well, that was a cold year in '77 But I married my wife We had two kids I gave her a daughter She gave me a son And we rode those damn horses 'til we had none Fist still like flyin' Doing things for dyin' Oh, I should have put that old gun away Well I, I am a broken Cowboy And I don't feel right no more 'Cause I am a broken Cowboy Livin' life in the fast lane Racing cars and robbing trains I thought I had it all Then one day, I got the call A father's worst dream My son went down and I The colours deceive me As I see grey Oh, you're cutting me down with those Cold words you're saying Then you called me, brother But this can't be so, 'cause you Slander my name, anywhere the wind will blow Well, I am a broken cowboy And I don't feel right no more 'Cause I am a broken cowboy Yes, I am a broken cowboy It's been a long dark dirty road But a pocket full of gold And I've been out here now All on my own Well, it's real quiet here Just the way I like it here There's no one to bother me Except that old taunting tree
Why haven't they done an official music video for this song? It is absolutely incredible. It cuts right through to your heart and just lays you out on the ground.
Listening with headphones on tonight… this recording seems to have picked up details from Scott that I’ve missed before. Like you said, they just keep getting better.
Wow.. I can't believe this masterpiece was not supposed to be on the album.. such an incredible beautiful song.. loving every second of this even after dozens and dozens of listenings from the album and live clips.. wishing I would some day see this amazing band live here in Finland.. far far away from Canada but... I keep hoping 😊
This is an awesome song & an awesome rendition of it!!!!!! I will spend my last years attempting to perform it, hopefully giving it a measure of justice…
I understand this song too well. I lost my son six years ago. the pain is always but I survive. After five years of mental therapy I am now able to go outside and be around small groups of people. Isolation seems like comfort but it is really a defense. Anyone going through this please get therapy, you can start to live again.
Maybe. My experience was different but it shattered me. I couldn't imagine a future a year ago but it's better and still improving. That said, I'm taking steps to ensure a lot of privacy. Peace.
I could only imagine what you have been through. Last week my ten year old and I tipped a canoe in 35 degree weather. I was watching him go hypothermic before we were rescued. That memory haunts me and forever will. If I had lost him? I couldn’t imagine. Or I can and it’s terrible. I wish you both peace.
@@chrissuess2795 Thank you. I am very glad that at the end of the day you can still kiss your son. May you both live a long and lovingly happy time. Hug him a bit extra in memory of my son. Life goes so fast.
That song has a lot of meaning for me too as my son killed himself with his grandfathers gun I feel the pain in the song as it draws it out from my soul… a beautiful pain based on the love of my boy…😢

Blues Grass!
My wife says she survived Covid years on Dead South and a good IPA. this band has a deep spot in her heart.
Lol, there is no such thing as good IPA, it's an English army ration.
Lucky witnesses of covid. IPA and bluegrass forever!
That is the way I got through in my 1 bed flat. God bless you and your wife.

I truly love this band. In your words - I just saw them (with my 6-year-old daughter) in the front row live in Prague, Czechia. Amazing experience ❤
Omg! They were in Tucson last year and I missed them????😢
A hundred listens and I still love this song.
There ain't no American music without Southern music.
Fair statement. Southern American music has been a massive influence. These fellas are Canadian, though.
Be well brother.

They should be Americans the way they sing. Come on down boys, get away from that socialized government up north.

It's been a long dark dirty road
And pocket full of gold
I've been out here now
All on my own
It's real quiet here
Just the way I like it here
There's no one to bother me
Except
In 1955, born into Wadena's pride
I laid my head on that
Milligan creek bed
When I was a young man
I helped build this land
Oh, I put down these rails as a
CPR man
Thought I'd live forever
With my heart in my pocket
Oh, my gun by my side
And my feelings in a locket
Well, that was a cold year in '77
But I married my wife
We had two kids
I gave her a daughter
She gave me a son
And we rode those damn horses 'til we had none
Fist still like flyin'
Doing things for dyin'
Oh, I should have put that old gun away
Well I, I am a broken Cowboy
And I don't feel right no more
'Cause I am a broken Cowboy
Livin' life in the fast lane
Racing cars and robbing trains
I thought I had it all
Then one day, I got the call
A father's worst dream
My son went down and I
The colours deceive me
As I see grey
Oh, you're cutting me down with those
Cold words you're saying
Then you called me, brother
But this can't be so, 'cause you
Slander my name, anywhere the wind will blow
Well, I am a broken cowboy
And I don't feel right no more
'Cause I am a broken cowboy
Yes, I am a broken cowboy
It's been a long dark dirty road
But a pocket full of gold
And I've been out here now
All on my own
Well, it's real quiet here
Just the way I like it here
There's no one to bother me
Except that old taunting tree
Thanks a lots!
I have been under many rocks in my life; how did I miss these this marvelous band!

What passionate vocals, terrific orchestration, simply excellent taste - and so well executed! Guys should be big stars!
