About The Dead South & their new album Sugar & Joy:
A rock band without a drummer, a bluegrass band without a fiddle. To the gentleman of The Dead South, a self-styled 4-piece string band from Regina, Saskatchewan, it's about how, not what, you play. The Dead South's combination of cello, mandolin, guitar and banjo has all the hallmarks of a group tuned to bygone times, but The Dead South find distinctly modern bathos in this old time rigging.
On their third album, Sugar & Joy, The Dead South tell stories of desperation and bad decisions in fast-paced, brightly laced bursts. The title, Sugar & Joy, was selected in the band's style of pulling a lyric from their self-identified "weirdest song on the record" (in this case the Gashlycrumb goth of "Fat Little Killer Boy").
Sugar & Joy is the band's first album written and recorded outside Regina. Produced by FAME Studio-trained Jimmy Nutt, a longtime member of the Muscle Shoals music scene who recent credits include a Grammy for his work on The Steeldrivers, Sugar & Joy is The Dead South's tightest, weirdest and most exciting studio work yet.
The Dead South's original and current lineup includes the gnarled baritone of Nate Hilts, Scott Pringle on mandolin, whistling cellist Danny Kenyon and virtuosic banjo player Colton Crawford. The four-piece, string-driven approach puts the interplay of unique and versatile voices front and centre, with Hilts, Pringle and Kenyon all sharing lead vocal duties.

Lyrics:
Basically we are all alone in the centre of a pickaxe mine
Black lung stings as the pickaxe swings
As the void of the mine closes in
The Devil Came and the Angels sang
A Song of the Holy Ghost
Tempted the soul from the pennies to the gold
Like the dust I spit from my mouth
Chorus: Wooo oooo ooo o o o o o o o o o o o o o o
Remember the night with the barroom fight
Where I killed all of my best friends
We gambled it away with the whiskey open keg
And we never saw it again
Well I had a wife that I met back in high school
Her name was LylaJean
We saved away to escape some place
On a local miner’s minor pay
Chorus
We saved so long the fall came and gone
At Least 27 times
It fell through the floorboards into deep dark darkness
And we never saw it again
West Virginia’s home and that’s where we’re staying
To the blade of the Bible hymn
Jesus says we’re wicked so we just keep on pickin’
At the scab of the open mine

The dead south is one of those bands that has taken over my music life. They dont have a bad song.
definitely
Yeah I've pretty much been obsessed ever since I heard them.
Well there is one song about pooping haha.
@@strangewayfaringstranger its a good song though..lol
I feel the same way. Can you imagine if they were around in the MTV days??? They would have KILLED IT!!!
These guys are criminally underrated and underappreciated.
Agreed! They're awesome 😎
in the U.S.
There are more than 25,000 people from all over the world in the "Good Company" Facebook fan group.
That's not that many...@@retriever19golden55
Oh no they're not, anyone who actually likes music becomes an instant fan when they hear them. They are criminally ignored by mainstream media who promote X Factor shite instead
As a metal head, never been a fan of country music, but these guys kick ass
Love to hear it! Few things make us happier than leading people to discover new artists outside of what they might normally be drawn to. Thanks for watching, man!
Exactly, talent is talent.
Colton and Nate are also metal fans and had several bands of those. It doesn't surprise me that you like them... and I do too, cause I am a metal head and musician as well. \m/
Metal, country and classical all have one thing in common; they use actual music to make their music. Case in point, check out Thunder Struck as done by 3 cellos:) so good. If q song is good any genre can handle it ☆☆☆♡♡♡
This is some good ass blue grass
Being an ex underground coal miner I can totally relate to this song. My great grandfather died of “black lung”. RIP John..
So sorry to hear about your loss, glad to hear that this track resonated with you❤
1.2K dislikes? uhm... 1.2k viewers don't appreciate art.. this is gold. haters can kick rocks.
I'm a full on metalhead and I absolutely love this band. I don't believe that they have a bad song in their entire catalog.
They're one of our favorites for sure! Thanks for checking us out!
Bro, I'm the same. Crazy good music.
Any four man band: We are just 4 guys that can play well together
The Dead South: Hold our whiskey
It's rye!
OMG did you know that they originated in Canada
i'M GOIN TO HEAVEN IN A WHEELBARROW
Why am I just hearing these guys, Can't stop listening to their songs and its just layers of amazing playing and the voices to top it off. Love it.
Thanks tor watching and commenting!
If you ever get the chance to see them live by all means do so
@@davidcarpenter1304 it seems like they only play 21+ shows so it's gonna be a few years
You should see them live.
Go watch "in hell I'll be good company" if you haven't yet.
Their breakout video for sure.
Wish I could upvote these guys every time is listen to them.
So glad you like it!
So do I
They just get better! Can't wait to see them in concert!
I might be a black guy, but i can say it's a damn shame that acts like this don't make it to mainstream radio, but talentless hacks flood the airwaves. Big labels only look for acts that look and sound like other artists and it's ridiculous. This is real and true talent, yet most people find them by accident on youtube, while mumble rap and "finger-snap" country music is forced down our throats every time we turn on a radio. shameful.
Well said, bud.
They call it "racist" and dismiss it, then go talk angry lyrics and push computer buttons make millions and call themselves "musicians". I'm going to Sly and the Family Stone next.. great memories. Thank God we have this venue to travel to whatever culture, country we want-what a great world we live on! Also on my play list is Simply Red -holding back the years live in Rocco Italy w/full orchestra ,Dire Straits-tunnel of love,skateaway-ext version,Yuridia-Nos amigos for favor, Allman Bros,Marvin-classic lightyears ahead of his time.Found these guys when listening to White Liar -great banjo buildup.
There’s nothing you gotta explain about you being black. Country, true country, is stories told through the heart and soul, and you can’t put a skin tone on that. You and the rest of the black community have as much claim to cowboy/country heritage as us farmer tanned boys. Anybody who says different, tell them to go look up Bass Reeves. That dude rivaled Wyatt Earp in badassery ✌️
@@salempoor834 i can strongly appreciate that entire reply. thank you. love the user name, btw. Mothman Prophecies is one of my fave films and overall mythos.
DiMaggia Yen You’re very welcome, my friend. And I think you’re only the second person to get where my username came from lol
The Mothman is a cool legend. 😉
So glad that i found the song "in hell, ill be in good company" this song is also a gem
That song is how I found out about these guys
It is for most people. It was used in a trailer for some show and then they started getting a hell of a lotta downloads.
me too!
It even gets a good playing down here in Australia
I also love their song "That bastard son" 😊 Amazing vocals, harmonies and awesome playing!! 😍
That banjo player is killing it
These guys have more talent tucked into their boots, than other musicians and actors from Canada. It's because they don't have to force the music that they feel. They don't force the art that they feel. It's just painfully real ,and Grim, like real life.
There is little doubt the two best bands from Canada are the Dead South and Walk off the Earth, very different, but so very purely talented abs they LIVE to make music, they just LOVE doing what they do...
Sonny Barlow, What you said in your last 2 sentences almost sounds like it could be the lyrics for the next best song !
@@jmartin8568rush.
Sitting in a quiet office on Christmas eve, eve and hearing this for the first time. Damn fine song.
Merry Christmas Cloyd!
It was so good live.
Merry xmas! Great combo!
So glad you enjoyed the video and hope you had a great Christmas!
Seen them live in Phoenix in 2018 and live in San Diego in 2019, they only get better.
Are these guys killing it? Answer: Fuck Yes!
I never was into bluegrass but somehow these guys have captured my ears with a sound that makes me loves them more and more. The more I listen the more I love them and can't stop listening to them.
This is the type of music my soul has been searching for 😂😂
I'm from West Virginia, now living in Southern California. Everytime i get homesick, i listen to The Dead South, this song makes me feel at home even more so.
which is funny because they're actually canadian
@@facnypantsman23 Oh yeah I know. I laughed about the thought too. It's the style of music that makes men feel at home. This one more so because of the topic
From the Ozarks.... in Florida, me too. Makes me wanna go home.
These guys are from Saskatchewan.
Have you heard Tyler Childers work? I am Canadian but I feel for those coal miners when I hear him.
From this song I feel a connection to my great grandfather who was a coal miner in West Virginia
Blessed are the Peace Makers - RIP Arthur Morgan 1899 & John Marston 1911
Hey there black lung
Fantastic recording. Give your audio engineers a bottle of wine for me.
Divert will do! Thank you for leaving the comment and so glad you enjoyed it!
Ya Know Eh... Canada is the savior of old school music....
Deep. Moving. Awe some. The BEST. Hope they understand the moving deprh of their song. I've known so many that fell into the depth of this song. LOVE THEM.
Love when they let Danny sing solo parts! His raspy voice is so gorgeous 💖💞💗
Music that speaks to your soul has no race or creed.
Nevertheless fascinating that the cellist is black!
Reflects
Music has brought humanity together for as long as we've been able to speak
@@heathermcdougall2399 is he? I thought he was hispanic
Grand dad was a coal miner, black lung took him too early. Great song, portrays life in any small coal town
I'm a classical music lover You speak such genetic volumes to me
🕯️
For a band from Canada, they sure know the south!!
Canadians being more american than actual americans. Much like the Band. Amazing music in any genre. Love this stuff so much. Canada, like Australia and New Zealand, produces some of the greatest music in the world.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting!!
@ Peter Adamakakis have you hear anything by Marty Robbins or Johnny Horton?
How did I just discover this band last night? Already hooked! This is pure talent.
Glad you're digging The Dead South! Hope you'll check out the rest of our session with them--> th-cam.com/users/results?search_query=ourvinyl+the+dead+south
REAL music, REAL musicians. Sending out a REAL thank you!!
Screwed
My fathers from this Saskatchewan my wife is from West Virginia my 2 boys live in The South of USA....i should be living in Wheeling with all that moving around.
.
So I'm a programmer, and I have learned, through about a month of trial and error at this point, that I write better code when listening to The Dead South. I'm really pleased about this fact haha!
Please come to the east coast of Canada, we will fill all the seat
I am ashamed that the south has failed at a genre of music they created. But these Canadians have got the spark god bless them. They are country music's only hipe.
You mean the south has created a genre of music that is so good that it even inspired Canadians to hoo on board? Naw, I get your comment. You should try and seek out the none mainstream acts. You'd be surprised at how good alot of indie act's you will find are.
@@robzombie2024 I've tried but I cant find any good country except a few
Be sure to check out our session with Tyler Childers (and his music in general) should you be looking for some good country.
i can't believe how good these guys are
love these guys and im a metal head lol have a great day everybody much love
Glad to hear you're a fan! Thanks for watching!

Couldn't find a lyric video thanks a lot😀
Yeahh!!
Howdy blacklung. How's the tb?
I remember when I listend all kind of music but now I listen only Dead South and I'm fine with it. 👏
Then why can't you even spell it?
@@alan4sure maybe because of autocorrect, have you heard about it? :)
@@julianabaiduza2344 Yes, I turn it off. You?
alan4sure thank you for your kindness, I don’t want to turn it off. :)
You'd be better without autocorrect I think. It doesn't know what you're saying. You do know, not autocorrect. Just a way for technology to make us look bad lol.
A thing like this? In 2019? There's still hope
These lads deserve a big record deal. Such talent.
That would probably ruin their music and their careers.
Stay independent like my favorite rock band the warning. Modern record companies are garbage like radio

This song is especially for men like my Grandpa who had the disease called Black Lung. I think you guys deserve a Grammy.
Greetings from Coal Heritage Highway.
We're so glad you like it and thanks for you comment. Thanks for watching!
as someone whos grandpa died of black lung barely before i was born. this song is very healing much thanks (
It is really hard not to like you guys. You're like the Black Sabbath of Bluegrass. Provoking, yet eerily pleasant.
Black Sabbath of Blue Grass. Excellent
Greatings from the fellow coal miner from Kostolac, Serbia!
Wow! Thanks for checking us out from all the way over there! Hello from Nashville👋
I’m very impressed by the talent of this bluegrass band so I’d love to attend a Dead South concert in France
Theses guys are unbelievable talented. I can’t quit listening to them. I’m 70 yrs old and can’t stand to hear most mainstream music, these guys are awesome.
Thanks for listening!
Well, they're just too good to be true. Great sound, great raspy singing voices, great lyrics, great stage presence......seriously, these guys are the package. Well done lads!
Hi from australia . Love ya 💯👍
What up, Australia?! Thanks for watching!
this was my favourite crhistmas gift
I see Dead South I smash that like button
I have three kids. I'll make sure i'll pass this music to them, and them to their kids in the future aswell
I normally paddle faster when I hear banjos, but that banjo made me turn around! Can't get enough of this song!
They all got such purty moufs
From one dead south to another love your work
I heard these guys last year, bought a couple songs and now my 8 year old can't get enough. Drives her mom crazy! I love it.
My 6 year old and 3 year old love them. Everytime we get in the car "dad can we listen to the dead south" my reply hell yes!!
I wasnt sure I would ever find a group from the country genre that I would like as much as I did the groups from the 80's and 90's. The algorithm brought me one today. Love everything I have heard so far.
I dont know why but every song I hear them play. Kicksass...
Have liked these fellas for a while, finally got to see the in Concert late last year, that made me a fan, you owe it to yourself to see them live, ABSOLUTELY Incredible experience and somehow they managed to sound better Live. Very Rare for a band to do. See you next trip through Boys!
I saw them last summer, absolutely transcendent experience! And they're so friendly to their fans.
So glad you got to catch them live!!
Cracking band. This is a real gem of a song. They played it last weekend in Bilbao and the crowd sang every single note it was really special.
FINALLY! Blue Grass sung the way it's supposed to be sung, without that horrible whine. GOOD MUSIC!!!!
Um that whine started it. This is more country bluegrass and not bluegrass. Learn some history because if it wasn't for the whine and their music, there wouldn't be this. Have respect.
@@KatieCatWalker There is the natural nasal sound of an untrained singer, which the early bluegrass singers were, then there is the fake whine that is so annoying. The fake whine is harsh and dominates the sound. There is no need for it in bluegrass.
Beautiful voices sounds like I'm in heaven
So happy that you like it!
I'm a survivor Black Lung, a survivor.
haha I just woke my wife up jamming this song!
The original crew with Colton, a revelation!!!
Quite possibly the greatest unknown band in the last 20 years. These guys are Fn incredible.
Thanks from Toulouse city. France😊
Thanks so much for watching! Greetings from the US!
Going to see these guys for the first time in a couple weeks! Can’t wait!!!!
GREAT tune !! The Dead South and Colter Wall...givem hell boys ! Do the west proud !!

Oh black lung. You ain’t gonna reach that gun
Every time I see these guys, I am happy. Thanks for the cover song. You did a great job!
This song is addictive
I love their music! I’ve looked at the comments and don’t know why they’re not on the top 40 on radio!
They're too good. To real.
Now *_THIS_* is country I can get behind!
Love these guys . They are so good .
i can confirm they sound better in concert than video. you may ask how is that possible. but sheer talent and good acoustics. seriously . i saw them live. sounded perfect. cant get better
I can't tell you how many times I've watched this and continue to watch this video. Such a great video and song. Hopefully will get to see you next year
I can't stop listening and dancing
We won't stop you! Thanks for listening
That song right there just oozes cool! Love it!
Good sound, I’m loving this. Was listening to The night they drove old Dixie down and someone suggested this! Thanks!

West Virginian, born & raised, and I absolutely love this song. The Dead South are a FANTASTIC band, would love to see them live!
I thoroughly enjoyed that song!
Now I know two great artists from Saskatchewan, Colter Wall and The Dead South. Brilliant song and terrific sound!

This has become one of my favorites.
Yup, Can't stop listening to these Fellers, Top shelf, just loving it. Regina Boys!!!
Okay got here late just got to say love this music to bits.
You are right on time, my friend! Thanks for watching.
I can't stop watching their videos fantastic band
WOW. Heartfelt respect for Dead South. The more I listen, the more I like them.
One of the better live bands ive ever seen. I hope they stay together no more changeups in the band. The energy is so raw at there concerts.
I really think these guys will be together a long time. When Danny Kenyon left and under those circumstances I was thinking something amazing had just died.....him coming back and these guys back together... and their new tunes...cazy... only negative, I am not a big fan of what I think I am seeing w/their newest videos. Looks like you're hitting the big time, but be careful. It just doesn't seem authentic Dead South for some reason... be careful, guys, don't change, keep it simple, please don't lose what makes you so great.
@@richardlambert3364 I'm seeing them again in Las Vegas on December 8th, 2021.
Holy smokes! These guys right here. Awesome.
