It's also a Prison song about a guy in stir only having this memory of this woman to keep him going. He has nothing but this memory and a Dear John letter would leave him with nothing. The use of the Cello is brilliant in enveloping us with the feeling of terrible sadness and loneliness. Thanks guys. Stay safe

Original intension is hard to pin down. The earliest recording by the Pine Ridge boys in 1939 seems to me to be pretty standard tempo and feeling with the addition of yodeling at the beginning and end of the song. The next version also from 1939 by the Rice Brothers Gang is listed on the label as a Fox trot. It swings with "happy" embellishments. Since there is a good argument to be made for Paul Rice being the author of the song, the original intent is murky at best. It was clearly out in world at that point with very different versions.

Only just seen this. I said goodbye to my four-legged best friend of 17 years two weeks after this video came out. When we first met I'd sing to her to calm her (and me!) down, and one of the few things I knew (and she liked) was 'You are my Sunshine'. I only knew the cutest verses from the Muppet Show.
This version is raw, and full of grief and rage and sadness, and it absolutely rips into me. It would have been selfish as all hell to wait any longer, I always promised she'd not be in pain and I made damn sure I was there until the end. I'm hurting though.
Goodnight Summer, it was a damn honour and I miss you like crazy.

    • @patrickscalia5088
      @patrickscalia5088 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

Well most people are only really familiar with the refrain of it, which sounds pretty cheerful it you take it out of context. But if you actually pay attention to the lyrics it's a dark, sad, mournful song. It's about a person who is in pain. If I ever hear it sung cheerfully again it's going to sound really weird.
The song has a lot of similarities to Hank Williams's "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," enough that you could almost accuse Davis of plagiarism of the Hank Williams hit. Only problem with that hypothesis is that Davis's song predates Williams's song by nine years. They are similarly mournful and describe a person suffering toxic loneliness.
For people who don't know, the song was written and recorded by Hon. Jimmie Davis, Governor of Louisiana, my home. And if that doesn't tie the knot on Louisiana being the most musically inspired state in the Union, I don't know what does.
You listen to blues? How about jazz? You're welcome.

@@patrickscalia5088 @Patrick Absolutely. I think most people are familiar with the re-written lyrics which were turned into a lullaby. What's interesting about the first few versions of the original song (and it's been covered by hundreds of singers) was that they made it sound so BOUNCY. The very first version has a kind of swing music/country music sound. Even Gene Autry's version is kind of cheerful.
I don't know if Johnny Cash was the first singer to cover it with the melancholy air it deserves, but I like his version, too. If you look up the lyrics to all 6 stanzas, the last one basically runs, "If only you'll come back, I'll say everything was all my fault, just come back." The song is pretty desperate-sounding, with the singer kind of abasing themselves.
What I love about this version is, by tweaking the notes a little bit, you go from desperate to "If you leave me for the other guy, I WILL STAB YOUR EYES OUT." It's very "stabby." That sure beats bouncy and upbeat every time.

In 1938, my grandfather proposed to his first wife by singing this song to her while she was out in a field in rural Arkansas picking peas. Upon hearing about this, all his friends laughed at him & asked him why he'd buy the cow when he could get the milk for free. He married her anyway. They moved to Los Angeles.
    Fast forward 5 years.
When he returned home from fighting in WWII, she answered the door, 8 months pregnant & speechless (what could she say?) A man walked up behind her & asked, "Can I help you?" Without missing a beat, my grandfather said, "I'm her husband & I'm just here to pick up my things." The man opened the door for him, he went inside & gathered his belongings, & before he left he shook the man's hand & told him, "good luck."
    Then he walked away.
True story. Her name was Ruthie.

I'm guessing he was away fighting for longer than 8 months?
Wow. That REALLY sucks. Your grandfather handled it with grace, and she lost a good man.
Still, one woman's unfaithfulness is no reason to swear off marriage, like your grandfather's friends seemed to think (telling him he's stupid to marry?). After all, plenty of husbands have been unfaithful, too.
My granddaddy brought his mistress into my pregnant grandmother's home, "to help her cook for the fieldhands, since she's struggling with her pregnancy and three children ten and under." The mistress couldn't make a sandwich. But she WAS three months further along in HER pregnancy than my grandmother's pregnancy. Grandmother did all the cooking, while the mistress did all the childcare, because "Divorce is a sin." They split up later on, anyway, and people in the town blamed HER. Apparently, a good woman can CONTROL a bad man and keep him from going wild, and if he has a dozen kids running around town without his name, well, that's on HER for not being a good enough wife to satisfy him. UGH!
This song, a tale of love and betrayal and obsession and jealousy and possessiveness, and NOBODY IS RIGHT, HERE, can go both ways. That's why it's so darn good. Everyone who's actually LIVED for 2 or 3 decades, can relate to it, in some way.

When I was a teen, I considered music the most powerful force in the world, stronger than love and despair. Growing up I've lost that feeling.
I'm over 50 now, and I started feeling like this again. Thanks to the Dead South. Thanks to this song, and to their "Broken Cowboy". In my opinion, two of the most powerful songs that ever existed.

My mother used to sing this to me as a child, I learned it on the guitar when I could first play...
Now nearly 22 y/o I can truly say this is brilliant and she agrees greatly

My Godmother always sang this song..she died of Cancer couple years ago. Brings back memories... Great cover guys! Love the Bluegrass style!

I've watched this a bunch of times since it came out...and I only just noticed this time the wicked side-eye glare Nate shoots the camera as it spins around to focus on Scott right after he pops up from behind Nate. That's hysterical...by all accounts Nate is a fun-loving guy who loves his fans and always has time for them!

hey metal head, you aren't alone! these guys actually played metal before this, and had to relearn music to do this. supposedly their techniques are reminiscent of metal too, though I wouldn't know
