  • Tips for your first Winter Wild Camp! I'm no expert, but I have been camping for 24 years now and I know what works and what doesn't - I pass on a few of my tips to help you gain the confidence for your first Winter Wild Camp. The temperatures fall to below zero on Pendle Hill as I put my down gear to the test.
PS - don't drink beer unless you're an adult and you want to 😎
I also touch upon the subject of Men's Mental Health and the benefits that the Great Outdoors can have in combating various issues in this regard. I would encourage anyone who is struggling, to reach out.

Just a great video, you have no doubt helped loads of people decide that they can go and get outdoors, we can all buy the kit, but we can't buy 20+ years of your knowledge. As for your ending sequence on the benefits to mental health gained by going out and getting the space and peace, spot on there, and my god do I know that myself. Thank you once again for sharing your time and yourself 👌

Hi Chris, just a message to say thanks for posting your videos. I took up wild camping this year after watching your videos and those of other wild campers who post their videos on TH-cam. I have wild camped numerous times this year in the Lake District and North Wales. I am not far from you in the North West so the locations you wild camp are not to far away from me. Watching your videos is an eduction to people like me new to the hobby wanting to learn.
I recently followed your footsteps up to the summit of Pendle Hill via the Ogden Reservoirs after watching one of your back catalogue . I didn’t wild camp but recceed the area for when I go back with my tent. If it wasn’t for your video I probably would never of walked that route. Love your reviews of kit and seeing the places you visit. Keep up the good work mate, your work is appreciated and an inspiration to others. Maybe one day I will start my own channel and follow in your footsteps. 👍

So grateful to have found your channel Chris. I`ve been following your channel for a while now and at the age of 48 I`ve just completed my second wild camp up in Scotland along with my nephew and niece who are just 7 and 12 years of age. It really was an eye opener for them and they both absolutely loved it. I am sure we will do many more together in future and hopefully it`s given them the bug to go out and do it themselves later on in life. Good luck with the channel mate and many thanks for giving us the inspiration to get out there and do it.

Great video mate. This is my first of yours. I've recently found myself watching a lot of Joe Robinet and Matt Posa before I go to bed as I find them really relaxing. Really pleased to have discovered your channel as i can relate a bit more (I'm from Devon but now live in New Zealand) I have been considering pushing my long walks into solo overnight camps so there was a lot of really great info here. Discovered your channel the other day and working my way through the back catalogue. Great video. I recently went out for my first wild camp of 2020 to celebrate a year since adopting my dog. It was his first wild camping experience and mine for around 4 years. I also had a fair amount of new kit I had been gradually ordering and building up so it was a trip of a lot of firsts! It was so good to be back in my Ultra Quasar tent in the middle of the (misty) moors. I am trying to get out in the great outdoors more this year for the mental health benefits, and I am very fortunate to have Dartmoor on my doorstep (20min drive from my house). Keep up the good work and content, much appreciated.

Enjoyed this video once again . As always you spoke from the heart about men's mental health issues and I totally agree with every word you said. One comment you made " nothing ever goes to plan " rings so true on these trips but what I will add is that some of my best and most exciting trips into the wild have been when nothing went to plan. I've learnt to just smile and embrace it all. As they say Its all part of the adventure.

Great video as usual, you mention the ‘“what if’s”, I would have to comment on your First Aid kit. If your solo camping and you cut, scald or break something whilst enduring those temperatures, your first aid kit would be useless, first you would have to find it, open it, empty the contents by then you could have a serious problem. Can I recommend you carry a trauma kit as well, easily accessible and designed to rip them open with you teeth and apply single handle. £10 on eBay max, I carry two. Just an idea 💡also add a loop to your first aid kit, helps you to open it with ur teeth.

It looks a very special place Pendle hill, last year I purchased a very cheap tent from Decathlon £20 just to see what you can get for a small budget and I was surprised. The tent was so roomy and in the rain it kept me dry, I guess I am saying you can do an overnight camp for not a big outlay. Might be an idea for the future, camping on a low budget. Love your videos Chris.

I always have an emergence blanket and 2 person bivvy in my pack and never had to use either but there just in case. Agree with you on the audio situation and when I look back at some of one very first videos, with poor sound, I cringe to be honest. I do not know how to manage to do all you do and work full time, I only work 2 days a week and struggle sometimes doing the filming and editing. Always good to finish on a happy note and good on you for doing the tent time but too long for me, I tend to only sleep about 4 to 5 hours a night anyway for 14 hours tent time would drive me mad. Good advice on winter camping for sure. Couple of questions Chris, the emergency blankets, any idea of where to get them? Second question, you pitched up early on this one mate, were you far enough away from the masses or was it lovely and quiet on the top?
It’s gonna be a place I camp and just after tips on pitch up areas there.
The other camera and phone held up very well too for you, as you know I forget stuff and it does your head in doesn’t it but we knuckle down and get through it 👍.

Alright mate! I got my emg blanket from Go Outdoors..... But maybe amazon or ebay are even cheaper. It was 2 quid I recall, defo need to throw one in mate.
As for pitching early, yeah I did a bit. This time of year though you can get away with it. I was quite away from paths, the colour of the tent blends in so well to our hills that it's hard to spot.
I've found most people would simply come up and have a chat to be fair, never get any grief. They're always interested to hear about the wild camp!

Cheers from B.C Canada ; I enjoy your vids ,I’m a experienced backpacker so not a whole lot to learn but I have Scotch Irish ancestry so your locations are epic beauty , and you have a great attitude , no elitism.
1 question , did you use a ground sheet under your tent? I live in a wet area also and I use tyvek building wrap ( free from work ) , Are there any tents that eliminate the need , with true waterproof tub floor?

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Jamie, thanks for the kind words. I do use the intended groundsheet for this one - but only to protect it from wear and abrasion. The Soulo has a full bathtub inner and is fully waterproof as it is without a groundsheet. I have seen videos on YT with this tent sitting in pools of standing water in the Peak District - and the inner remained bone dry. Hope this helps 👍
